Welcome to the International Prospectus of the University of East Anglia

where you will find lots of useful information about our award-winning

institution. For almost 50 years we have been welcoming students from

across the world to our innovative degree and research programmes.

Currently we are home to almost 15,000 students, approximately 15 per cent

of whom are from overseas. Our international students come from more than

100 different countries and study in many different subject areas. The

University of East Anglia has an enviable reputation among British

universities and is consistently ranked in the top five universities in England

for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey. Furthermore, in

recent years we have constantly featured in the top 25 universities according

to the Times Good University Guide. Our balanced lifestyle of a campus

featuring beautiful countryside set on the edge of a vibrant city means that

our students gain a great insight into this area of the United Kingdom.

This prospectus will provide you with an idea of life at the University and

what you can expect if you decide to join us. From Nobel Prize Winners in

environmental and biological sciences to Booker prize winners in literature,

we have illustrious and successful alumni and we would invite you to take

Everything you need to make the most of your time as a student at the University of East Anglia is provided on our beautiful single-site campus set in more than 300 acres ofgreen parkland on the edge of Norwich. The campus is compact with all teaching andresearch facilities located within a few minuteswalk of the accommodation residences. The University has won more than twentyarchitectural awards and boasts iconicbuildings such as the Sainsbury Centre forVisual Arts designed by world-renownedarchitect Lord Norman Foster.

Sporting facilities on campus include theUniversity Sportspark which houses anolympic-sized swimming pool and regularlyhosts international sporting events. There isalso an international standard athletics track, a climbing wall, floodlight football pitches andtennis courts as well as a state of the artfitness gym.

The University is also a great place for culturalenthusiasts. The Sainsbury Centre serves a dual function as both a public art gallery and our School of World Art Studies andMuseology. Lord and Lady Sainsbury donatedtheir personal collection of world art to theUniversity in 1973 and the Sainsbury Centrefirst opened its doors to visitors in 1978.

It features a permanent collection of art workspanning 5,000 years with modern work byartists such as Henry Moore and FrancisBacon sitting alongside art from the ancientMediterranean, Africa and the Americas.

The University also hosts a biannualInternational Literary Festival which hasincluded famous names such as Ian McEwanand Kazuo Ishiguro (both Man Booker Prizewinners and alumni of the MA Creative Writingprogramme.) For music lovers the Students’Union frequently hosts many top internationalacts from the music world on campus as wellas classical concerts performed by studentsthemselves. Artists that have played at theUniversity include Oasis, Robbie Williams and The Killers.

The University Chaplaincy provides a centre for quiet reflection, worship and conversationbetween students and staff of all faiths. Prayerfacilities for Muslim students are also availablein the Islamic Prayer Centre on campus.

A purpose-built campus Medical Centreprovides a full range of medical services forstudents and staff. There is also a pharmacyand a dental service as well as an on-sitenursery for babies and children from six weeksold to school age.

There are many restaurants on campusranging from the beautiful Garden Restaurantin the Sainsbury Centre to DolcHe Vita, ournew espresso bar located at the centre ofcampus. In addition there is the University Pub which serves the most economical drinksin the region and is a great place to meetfriends and socialise. The new INTO centrealso features international cuisine seven days a week.

Recently the library has doubled in size toinclude more than one million books andjournals with more than 1,200 study places.Additionally there is a 24-hour IT area and a free wireless network available both insidethe library and on other areas of campus.

Our Dean of Students’ Office provides a fullrange of student services to all studentsincluding a dedicated team of InternationalStudent Advisers. They arrange a programmeof activities to help you settle into life at the

University and provide services such asadvising on employment and visa regulations,financial advice, childcare provision andEnglish language support.

The Students’ UnionThe Students’ Union (www.ueastudent.com) is extremely active in organising numerousactivities and events for the studentcommunity as well as clubs and societies fordifferent hobbies. Joining a club or society isthe ideal way to make friends with studentsfrom both the UK and other internationalstudents. The Union also exists to represent all students and has an Advice Centre whichhelps with many issues including finding part-time employment.

Some examples of clubs and societies includefootball, mountain biking, ultimate frisbee,international society, art and drama.

The results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) have confirmed theUniversity of East Anglia as one of the leading research institutions in the UK.The University offers around 180 undergraduate courses and 140 postgraduatecourses across 23 Schools of Study grouped into four faculties: Arts andHumanities, Health, Science and Social Sciences.

Leading the waySince its founding in 1963 the University hasbeen internationally recognised for its multi-disciplinary courses and innovative approach.The first department of environmental sciencesin the UK was founded here in 1967 followedin the 1970s by the first Master’s course increative writing and one of the first independentdepartments of international development.More recently, one of the UK’s newest medicinedepartments was created in 2002 followed bythe first new School of Pharmacy in the UK inmore than 30 years in 2003. INTO UniversityPartnerships Ltd and the University of East Angliaworked together to create the first joint ventureInternational Student Centre in the UK in 2006.

Flexible coursesAs a student you will be assigned to one of our academic Schools of study (departments)based in the faculties. Your school will be youracademic base and main point of contact withuniversity staff. Many of our degree coursesallow students to take units in other schools of study to encourage interdisciplinarity – thestudy of a combination of different subjects. In this way our students develop a strongfoundation in their chosen field of study andcan either continue to specialise or diversifyinto related subjects. At postgraduate research

level several research groups also cross overdifferent schools of study and for example our Centre for Competition Policy includesacademic staff from the Schools ofEconomics, Law, Business and Politics.

The University is also part of the NorwichResearch Park (NRP) which includes theNorfolk and Norwich University Hospital, the internationally reputed John Innes Centreand the Institute for Food Research. Due tothe close collaboration of the institutes of the NRP, Norwich has one of the greatestconcentrations of highly-cited researchers inthe UK – bettered only by London, Cambridgeand Oxford. Furthermore, with externallyfunded research projects worth £125 millionthe University is pleased that the results of the2008 Research Assessment Exercise showthat 87% of the university’s research activitywas deemed to be of international standing.

INTO University of East Anglia For international students who do not meetour standard academic or English languageentry requirements it may be possible to followa pathway course at our INTO centre on campus.The new INTO centre opened in September2008 and features state of the art teachingfacilities and residential accommodation.

The following academic programmes are available:

Foundation: preparation course forinternational students planning under-graduate study at the University. Subjectsavailable include business and economics,humanities and law, the sciences,computing sciences and mathematics andactuarial sciences.Diploma: an advanced course to prepareyou for the second year of undergraduatestudy at the University. Available subjects:business management, economics andbusiness information systems.

Graduate Diploma: Prepares students for a postgraduate taught or researchcourse at the University. Available subjects:business; economics; political, social and international studies; internationaldevelopment.Newton A level programme: designed toenable gifted high school students to reachtheir full potential and the highest A levelgrades. Pathways available in medicine orthe sciences, engineering and the physicalsciences, mathematics and economics,accounting or actuarial science.

Pre-sessional English language courses:If you are holding an offer for an undergraduateor postgraduate course at the University youcan take an INTO University of East Anglia Pre-sessional English course to meet theEnglish language requirements of your offer or simply to help you prepare for your course.Pre-sessional courses are available for 4, 6, 8,12 and 16 weeks. In addition, English forUndergraduate Study and English forPostgraduate Study programmes are available.

Living in Halls of Residence is a unique andunmissable experience. All internationalstudents are guaranteed Universityaccommodation as long as they apply by thedeadline. Undergraduate students can stay forthe length of their course (normally 3 years) andpostgraduate students for the first year (Master’scourses last one year). You will be living with adiverse mix of students, from a rich variety ofbackgrounds, studying different subjects.

All University residences are self-catering andprovide fully-furnished centrally-heated studybedrooms grouped around a shared kitchen.All rooms have a single bed, wardrobe, deskwith chair and fitted shelving. Each kitchen is

equipped with a refrigerator, freezer, and oven or microwave oven, and you can buyinexpensive cooking utensils, crockery andcutlery from the pots and pans sale at the start of the semester. All study rooms areconnected to the computer network for free and fast access to the internet.

Rooms are let on a minimum 38 week licencebeginning in September. Prices for the academicyear 2009-10 range from £60.20 per week(£2,287.60 per 38 week contract) for a standardsingle room to £95.55 per week (£3,630.90 per 38 week contract) for our newest en suitesingle rooms. En suite single: on campus Our newest residences, Britten, Browne,Colman, Kett, Paston and Victory Houses,provide rooms, grouped in 8 or 12-person flatswith a central wide corridor and a purpose-built kitchen/diner. Nelson Court andConstable Terrace offer rooms arranged mainlyin ten-person houses, with a large kitchen anddining area on the ground floor.

Standard single on campus:Norfolk / Suffolk Terrace Rooms in the architecturally unique zigguratsof Norfolk and Suffolk Terraces have beenrecently refurbished and are arranged in flats ofup to 12 rooms. Students in standard roomsshare communal showers and toilets with thestudents in their flat, but have their own wash-basin in their room. Each flat has a large kitchen/diner overlooking the broad, our on-campus lake.

En suite single: University VillageThe University Village is located just oppositefrom the main University entrance and offers700 en suite rooms in a group of 10 buildings.All Rooms are en suite with their own shower,toilet and washbasin, and are grouped in 6 or 8-person flats, each with kitchen/diner.

Standard single on campus:Orwell / Wolfson CloseThese are the most economical residences on campus, accommodating just over 100students in a cluster of houses. Rooms arearranged in flats of between 5 and 12 rooms.Each flat has a kitchen and dining room, and communal toilet and shower facilities.Rooms do not have washbasins.

Standard single city centre:Mary Chapman CourtOur city centre residence, Mary ChapmanCourt, offers great value city living in the heartof Norwich approximately 3 miles from theUniversity. Direct bus routes to the universityare in close proximity. Rooms do not havewashbasins, but the small 5-person flats share ample shower and toilet facilities and a large kitchen/diner.

Standard twin rooms oncampus: Norfolk andSuffolk TerraceSharing a twin room with another student is a great way to save money. Twin rooms arearranged to maximise privacy, with one bedsituated in a large study area, and the other in a screened-off area with washbasin andwardrobes. There are twin rooms available in Norfolk and Suffolk Terrace.

Paired unit rooms oncampus: Nelson Court and Constable TerraceIn a paired unit you would have your ownstudy bedroom but you would share a smallkitchen and a shower room with one otherstudent of the same sex. Around 160 pairedunit rooms are available in Nelson Court andConstable Terrace. They are generallyallocated to postgraduate students.

Family accommodationThe University owns and maintains 46 two-bedroom, centrally-heated houses, to let tostudents who have children. Many of thesehouses are on campus, and all properties arewithin easy access of schools, shops, publictransport and other amenities. To be eligible to apply for a family house, you must be a full-time student with dependent children. First year international students are givenpriority, but students from the UK andreturning students may also apply. Due tolimited availability, family housing is notguaranteed, and we are often unable to offeraccommodation to students with families. We strongly advise international students notto arrange travel for your families unless youare certain you have somewhere to live.

Entry Requirements

Undergraduate Students studying for Mexican High School or Secondary School Diplomas (usually

completing study in the 13th

grade) will be considered for entry to undergraduate degree

programmes. Most courses will require an overall score of between 70 and 80%. For some

disciplines, students with a slightly lower average percentage may be considered.

Holders of the Bachillerato, or other suitable foundation qualifications, may be considered

for direct entry to Bachelor degree courses.

Holders of the International Baccalaureate Diploma with 28 - 35 points or with A-levels

obtained in Mexico will be considered for direct admission to first degree programmes.

Details of the required subjects and scores for each course are detailed in the undergraduate

prospectus.

Postgraduate Holders of the Licenciado/Professional title awarded after 4 or more years of study will be

considered for postgraduate diploma courses or Masters degree courses.

Applicants with Masters degree (Maestria) or a very good Promedio (minimum 9+) will be

considered for entry to Ph.D. studies.

Our masters and research courses require at least a score IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL paper-based 585 / TOEFL internet-based 95 / PTE 62, or equivalent.

Note that some courses require a higher score - please check the specific details for the course(s) you are interested in.

Please Note: You do not need an English exam score before submitting your application for admission. An exam score or other evidence proving your competence in English may be submitted at a later date.

The city centre is only a 15-minute bus ridefrom the campus and the University buspasses are among the cheapest in the UK.Between the city centre and the campus is anarea called the ‘Golden Triangle’ where manyof our students live and where you’ll find livelyand cosmopolitan pubs, shops and cafés.

Shopping Frequently referred to as one of Britain’s topten shopping cities, Norwich features a uniqueblend of independent stores, small specialistshops, major high street chains and thecountry’s largest open-air market set amidst a maze of pretty medieval cobble-stoned lanesand alleys. There are shops and restaurantsthat cater to all the world’s tastes, cultures and cuisines, including supermarkets sellingAsian foodstuffs.

BusinessNorwich is known as a city which is home tomany global financial services brands includingAviva, Virgin Money and the Moneyfactsgroup. Manufacturing was once an importantindustry in Norwich and Colman’s of Norwichstill manufactures the famous yellow Colman'sEnglish mustard in the city. A recent survey found that the region of East Angliahas the least crime, best health and amongst thehighest employment rates in the country.

Arts and cultureThe city centre has a wide variety of arts andentertainment venues, many of which offerdiscounts to students. For film lovers there are three multiplex cinema venues and one ofthe finest art house cinemas in the East ofEngland – Cinema City.

Norwich has six theatres including the TheatreRoyal, the most successful regional theatre inthe country, which puts on major musical acts,comedy, opera and ballet. There are a numberof museums and galleries in the city includingthe contemporary Norwich Gallery and theCastle Museum, which has touring exhibitions,as well as a gallery devoted to works by artistsof the Norwich School.

Norwich City Football Club is convenientlylocated in the city centre next to the trainstation, a short bus ride from the University. It is in the top ten of the best supported clubsin the country and currently competes in theChampionship division.

How to get to UEA

The University and the city of Norwich

are well served by road, rail and air

connections from all over the UK.

By air: There are flights from Mexico to

Norwich via Amsterdam and it is also

possible to fly into London Heathrow.

From Norwich airport, it is a 15 minute

taxi ride to the campus or into the city

centre. A taxi rank is situated right

outside the arrivals lounge. From

London Heathrow, there is National

Express bus service which travels
