The Asian Institute of Chartered Bankers (AICB) and the Chartered Banker Institute United Kingdom jointly organised the Executive Conversion Programme, which saw 45 industry leaders being conferred the prestige Chartered Banker award. Among them were 15 senior bankers whom were conferred the Fellow, Chartered Banker and 30 senior bankers whom were conferred Chartered Banker. 6 November 2015, Sasana Kijang, Kuala Lumpur This is the committment of AICB in championing the vision of professionalising bankers. It is also in line with the institution’s long term strategy of becoming a professional body of choice for bankers. The professional designation of Chartered Banker brings with it a strong commitment towards highest ethical, professional and technical standards necessary to sustain a growing industry. Membership of the Institute is aimed at ensuring individuals working with the banking and financial services sector achieve the desired and highest standards of professionalism. The Institute also conferred Life Membership to the Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. Zeti Akhtar Aziz, for her contributions to the banking industry, including the modernisation and enactment of ten major pieces of legislation for the financial sector. The Asian Institute of Chartered Bankers (AICB) organised the Global Banking Conference 2015, themed “The New Banking Paradigm – Disruptions, Risks and Opportunities” on 3-4 November 2015 at InterContinental Kuala Lumpur.

The conference was attended by more than 400 professional bankers from around the globe. There were 19 speakers present including Professor Nassim Taleb, author of Black Swan, who is also the Distinguished Professor of Risk Engineering at the New York University.

The conference started with a half day workshop on Stress Testing, comprising a keynote address and a panel session with 4 international speakers who were from India, China and Germany. The 2nd day of the conference started with a special address on Global Volatility and Risks. This was followed by 3 plenary sessions, a

luncheon talk and a keynote address and dialogue session with Nassim Taleb. Topics on the plenary sessions included Balancing Regulations and Innovations, Risk Culture and Conduct, Standards of Professionalism in Banking and the Risk of a ‘Black Swan’ from Cyberspace.

One of the highlights of the conference was also the launch of the Bank Risk Management Qualification, which is the only qualification of its kind in the world. Enrolment opens on February 2016.

AICB BRINGS THOUGHT LEADERSHIP TO EAST MALAYSIAAICB Breakfast Series - Financial Service Act 2013: Should Bankers Lose Sleep Over It ?

The third and fourth installation of the AICB Breakfast Series were held at Kuching, Sarawak on 26 October and Kota Kinabalu, Sabah on 18 November 2015 respectively at the Auditorium, Bank Negara Malaysia’s regional offices. Featuring Mrs Humairah Sukiman, Senior Legal Counsel of Bank Negara Malaysia on the Financial Services Act 2013.

The Chief Executive of AICB, Mr Tay Kay Luan, began the session with his welcome remarks where he welcomed the guests and highlighted the Institute’s progress and achievements throughout the year. He emphasized the need for professionalism amongst bankers and how this vision was becoming a reality with the Chartered Banker Joint Conferment Ceremony and the introduction of new qualifications, namely, Bank Risk Management, the third level of Chartered Banker and the Advance Certification in Regulatory Compliance. Mr Tay also reiterated that the next few years was going to be challenging for the banking industry and there would be an increased need for credibility and transparency amongst bankers. He pledged AICB’s commitment to continuously provide members with valuable knowledge and skills through industry focused qualifications.

Guest speaker Puan Humairah Sukiman, the Senior Legal Counsel of Bank Negara Malaysia’s Legal Department, provided an in-depth overview of the Financial Services Act 2013 (FSA) and Islamic Financial Services Act 2013 (IFSA) which came into force on 30 June 2013. She shared how these Acts continue to be relevant and effective to maintain financial stability and support inclusive growth in the financial system and the economy, as well as to provide adequate protection for consumers.
