Proven Technology - Proven Economy

Thirty years experience in U.S. and worldwide applications has proven the performance and economy of using biaxial geogrids to confine aggregates subjected to dynamic loads. Contech Engineered Solutions LLC bring to you an entire suite of high-quality biaxial geogrids that provides project-proven results.

Reduced Aggregate Layer Thickness

Biaxial geogrids confine aggregate subjected to dynamic loads, restraining movement and effectively increasing the aggregate shear strength. In turn, vehicle-induced loads are spread more efficiently, producing reduced pressure on less competent subgrades. As a result, thinner layers of biaxial geogrid confined aggregate result in comparable subgrade loadings to thicker, non-confined layers. With reduced aggregate quantities, along with associated reductions in transportation and placement expenses, immediate cost benefits often result.

Increased Structure Longevity

Wider load spreading and reduced subgrade stresses apply to conventional aggregate thicknesses as well. Using biaxial geogrids in conjunction with standard base depths routinely results in longer structure life and lowered life-cycle costs.

Optimized Performance and Economy

Often, optimization of structure life and economy results via biaxial geogrid use with intermediate aggregate thicknesses. To facilitate optimization, Contech Engineered Solutions provides BI-DESIGN, interactive software developed to assist contractors and engineers in selecting appropriate geogrids and aggregate thicknesses using conventional design practices.

E’GRID® Geogrids

Unbalanced (rectangular) aperture, punched-and-stretched, polypropylene biaxial geogrids have been the standard in theUnited States since their introduction in the early 1980s.With nearly 30 years of in-the-ground performance history and cost-reducing results, unbalanced biaxial geogrids remain the U.S. choice for trafficked structure applications.

E’GRID geogrids provide the option to continue this well-proven practice. The combination of long-established mechanical, geometrical, and durability characteristics enables E’GRID geogrids to significantly reduce aggregate movement. The result…aggregate layers with effective load-distribution capability…and industry-proven benefits:

•thinner aggregate layers with lower in-place cost,•reduced life-cycle costs using conventional aggregate

layer thicknesses, or•optimized structure longevity and economy using•E’GRID BI-DESIGN software analyses

All E’GRID punched-and-stretched geogrids aremanufactured at a single, state-of-the-art facility. BecauseContech Engineered Solutions uses this single source, we can and do track and document product from the raw resin phase, through production, through warehousing, all the way to delivery at our customer’s site. This chain of custody is critical to ensuring that delivered geogrids meet site-specific specifications.

Contech delivers not only performance-proven geogrids, but also customer confidence.

The four-point rib-to-node configuration as well as its associated aggregate interlock capabilities have been field-proven and laboratory validated for nearly 30 years both in the United States and worldwide.

Grid-to-aggregate interlock is optimized via the near-vertical aspect angle of both ribs and nodes to aggregate particles. The lateralbending modului of ribs, and the resulting aggregate confinement benefit, are enhanced by appropriate rib height:width ratios.

Proven Technolgy - Proven Economy

Aperture & Rib Modulus Considerations

Vehicles, whether autos, trucks, or rail cars, impart large, symmetric, dynamic loads into surfacing materials (asphalt, concrete, etc.), aggregates, and subgrades. The load-transfer mechanism, from wheel to subgrade, is three-dimensional, with changing vector orientation and magnitudes at any one point in the structure as the wheels moves. Therefore, to optimize aggregate shear strength and its resulting load-spreading characteristics, a confining geogrid must restrain lateral particle movements with relative uniformity in all directions. Balanced (square) aperture E’GRID geogrids with their high rib-tensile modulus and high resistance to installation and in-situ damage, provide both superior aggregate confinement and performance longevity.

Rib & Junction Considerations

Restraint of lateral aggregate movement requires high lateral bending moduli from a geogrid’s ribs along with superior rib-to-aggregate interlock. Vertical rib sides and appropriate rib cross-sectional shape facilitate lateral aggregate confinement.

E’GRID geogrids are designed and produced to optimize bothcharacteristics (see diagram below). Additional lateral rib-bending resistance results from high node stiffness, another key E’GRID geogrid characteristic. E’GRID geogrids’ design, manufacturing processing, and quality control management system ensure optimization of these synergistic characteristics – and the field performance expected.

E’GRID® Geogrids

Balanced (square) aperture, punched-and-stretched, polypropylene biaxial geogrids have been the worldwide standard for nearly 20 years. Countless thousands of successful projects are in place with each possessing unique soil, contractor, equipment, weather, groundwater, and loading conditions. Given this historical breadth of proven performance, E’GRID biaxial geogrids are far more than “full-scale laboratorytested”or “full-scale field-trialed.” Balanced aperture E’GRID geogrids, distributed by Contech Engineered Solutions, meet the demanding standards of this worldwide market in biaxial geogrids, including ISO manufacturing facility certification and a published MQC program. Further, Contech Engineered Solutions verifies critical product characteristics via third party evaluation at GAI-LAP certified U.S. laboratories.

While differing in aperture shape and associated mechanical properties, E’GRID biaxial geogrids function by identical processes to those of E’GRID geogrids, confining aggregates and improving aggregate load-support qualities.

As expected, similar benefits result in:•thinner aggregate layers with lower in-place cost,•reduced life-cycle costs using conventional aggregate

layer thicknesses, or•optimized structure longevity and economy using•E’GRID BI-DESIGN software analyses

Biaxial Geogrids Meeting U.S. and Worldwide Performance Needs

Design using biaxial geogrids is empirically based. Therefore, the supplier’s quality system must ensure that products shipped to a project meet or exceed physical properties of the research and testing programs used as a basis for design. The only way to ensure product-quality uniformity is to require a comprehensive quality management system with full traceability.

Critical components of such a system include a documented manufacturing Quality Control (QC) program, third party Quality Comprehensive Quality Management System

Assurance (QA) testing, and a chain-of-custody traceability from raw material to delivered product. The biaxial geogrid quality management program employed by Contech Engineered Solutions encompasses all of these components.

All E’GRID punched-and-stretched geogrids are manufactured at a single, state-of-the-art factory by BOSTD Geosynthetics Qingdao, Ltd. (ISO9001:2008 certified). BOSTD’s QC program is documented and available for review. It covers all aspects of product manufacturing and quality checks. Most importantly, the program provides a clear rationale for acceptance/rejection of product. Due to the unique production capability at BOSTD Geosynthetics rapid feedback (< 6 hrs.) from QC testing to the manufacturing process is normal. Once products are shipped to our warehouses, independent, U.S. testing laboratories receive random samples from stock and test the products for conformance with specifications. This provides an additional, fully independent check on quality and conformance. Because Contech Engineered Solutions uses a single source for these products, we track and document product from the raw resin phase, through warehousing, all the way to delivery at a project site. This chain of custody is critical to ensuring that products being shipped to project sites meet specifications.

The partnership between Contech Engineered Solutions’ distribution network and BOSTD Geosynthetics’ production capabilities brings to the U.S. geosynthetic market a full range of worldwide-proven, biaxial geogrid solutions meeting even the most demanding project requirements.

State-of-the-Practice Design Methodologies

Putting you in control of your projects is our goal. Contech Engineered Solutions provides support of its product offerings by furnishing design tools* that follow state-of-the-practice standards. These tools are focused on optimizing biaxial geogrid performance and project economy for roads and other trafficked structures.

BI-DESIGN is interactive software designed to assist engineers and contractors in selecting the appropriate geogrid product to solve their soft subgrade problems, enhance pavement performance, and save time and/or money. The software incorporates state-of-practice design methodologies validated by nearly 30 years of worldwide performance history to give the user peace of mind. User-friendly modules include:

“QuickCalc”: allows for rapid geogrid/aggregate thickness selection based on field-proven prescriptive methods for reducing cost and time associated with access/temporary road construction, subgrade improvement under pavements, and other non-surfaced roads and working platforms. This module is designed for use where a quick solution is required for poor subgrade conditions. Input data required is minimal and easily gathered by field personnel.

“SubSave”: for use where a more rigorous analytical approach and comparison of various geogrid reinforced and non-reinforced scenarios are needed to reduce the potential for subgrade overstressing. This module uses the design method for geogridreinforced unpaved roads developed by Dr. J.P. Giroud and Dr. Jie Han, published in the August 2004 volume of the ASCE Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Journal. This methodology has been widely used since its publication and adopted by the Federal Highway Administration in their course “Overview of FHWA Geosynthetic Design and Construction Guidelines (FHWA NHI-07-092).”

“BaseRF”: allows for analysis of geogrid reinforced flexible pavements to determine the optimum reinforcement geogrid/base course combination to: reduce initial construction costs, increase pavement life span, or a combination of these benefits. The software applies geogrid-specific traffic benefit ratios (TBRs) developed using 30 years of biaxial geogrid research and field performance data to the AASHTO ’93 flexible pavement design guide methodology.

“Estimator”: results from the other modules feed into this tool to facilitate quick material and cost estimates as well as cost comparison among geogrid/aggregate combinations being considered.

“SpecPlus”: This module includes comprehensive example hand calculations, simple “drop-in” engineering specifications, detailed drawings, and installation guides. All information required by engineers and contractors to support the proper use of geogrid reinforcement technology is in this module.
