at the expense of sounding morbid, i couldn’t help but

liken the eaglet school publi-cation to a mummy. lest i be misunderstood, allow me to ex-plain where i am coming from.

from time to time i would come across interesting fea-tures in discovery channel and nat geo about mummies in a show called The Mummy road Show. What fascinates me more was how, by study-ing these lifeless remains, we can actually open a window of knowledge about how life

and culture was then and in doing so also begin to under-stand ourselves better as well.

in a way i think your pub-lication, is a culture capsule that may come in handy de-cades from now. Perhaps when you are all grown up, you can unearth this so-called capsule, revisit the eaglet and see how life in the ateneo grade School was then, and i hope that like these arche-ologists, it will give you a bet-ter appreciation of who you have become as ateneans.

Opening Remarks:

Many of us are often excited about new school years. i look

forward to it for i will learn new things, meet new friends, and see my old classmates once again. i joined the eaglet club probably because i like writing stories and see them printed on a magazine. i do not re-gret joining this club. in fact, i like it.

in class, i get to try new things like being a class officer and playing in the intramural games. Three months had passed and so far, i am enjoying because i like my new friends who are kind. They supported me during the elections. i wish they would re-main that way until the school year ends. My teachers are good to me as well. When this school year ends,

as you all know, a new school year means new students, fac-

ulty, staff and possibly new buildings and rules. at the start of the school year, many are somewhat confused, shy but to a certain extent, excited.

during the start of classes the stu-dents are usually enthusiastic about the upcoming elections, contests, class nights and the most-awaited fair. Those who are not new to the school have the responsibility to make the new

teachers and students feel welcome.

for starters, the ateneo has ac-tually implemented a new waste management rule where everybody is advised to have reusable food containers to minimize the amount of garbage within the campus.

enjoy this school year 2007-2008. Make new friends; keep the old. Study hard and hit the gold!

my knowledge will be enhanced with the help of my teachers, classmates and friends. i look for-ward to having a good school year and having more friends.

New SY, Cool New Teachers!

every new school year, new teachers are welcomed in the ateneo grade School (agS) community. This year, there is a grand total of 38 new teachers—27 in the Primary School and 11 in the Middle

School (MS). although two teachers moved out, another two have moved in to complete the 11 new teachers in the MS.

The eaglet members asked a few of them, “What do you look forward to this new school year?” here is what they have to say:

The co-curricular Orientation was held at the covered courts last June 14 with the ateneo grade School (agS)

Middle School students, faculty and staff from 1:40-:00pm. The event introduced students to the many different clubs they can join on June 21, the first day for Co-Curricular Ac-tivities (cOca). it was hosted by three talented grade sev-en students: lance calub, itos ladesma and Bastin adrias.

But you may be wondering where all these activities come from. The cOca started many years ago, since the time of my uncle who studied in agS in the 60’s and the 70’s. Today, in addition to the 4 regular clubs, four new clubs were launched: Model rocket club, Phi epsilon al-pha, drum club, and Palarong Pilipino. during the event, members of clubs like Taekwondo, Karate do and Muay Thai demonstrated their martial arts skills. The students had a blast watching these and the other presentations.

iel Mirasol, an agS graduate, also gave an inspiring talk about his experiences in iSaiaS, a religious and social ac-tion club, and explained what students do in iSaiaS. We learned that members of this club go to public schools and share their time, knowledge and talent with the students in these schools. Truly, they are being young men for others.

and with that, the orientation ended. The students talk-ed amongst themselves about the clubs they were plan-ning to join as they exited the covered courts. here’s look-ing forward to fun and learning in your respective clubs!

ClubOrientation

June 22, 2007 – the grade 7 class night, entitled “ha 7 iTO” (pronounced “hapi-to”) proved to be a truly memorable event in the stay of the grade 7 students.

for those oblivious as to what a class night is, it’s basically an event where students sleep over in their respective classrooms for a day. as for the main event, there’s a three-hour long program with games and various presentations from the members of the grade 7 family.

even a week before the class night, students were already excit-ed and fired-up. Class advisers had to remind their students of the rules and regulations of the event beforehand. Much to the dismay of the stu-dents, electronic devices and such were not allowed. after all, the class night is supposed to be a time for bonding with friends and classmates!

Ha 7 to Class night daze

by cJ araneta | 7-canisius

following a change of plans, the grade 7 class night, sadly, did no longer feature what would be considered the “main part” of the program – the dance presentations. This deci-sion, on the part of the grade 7 faculty (or the whole Middle School administration) was simply to make room for more games and other pre-sentations. There were mixed reactions among the students. Some were happy, and oth-ers - they weren’t exactly thrilled to hear that.

during the main event, Ms. elizabeth B. Bermio, the grade level coordinator (glc) of grade 7 gave a short speech to start off the festivities. after this, there was a quiz regarding the title of the class night. Students were asked to pronounce “ha 7 iTO” and give a reason as to why the class night was named as such. One student pronounced it correctly and his class was awarded a prize.

Various presentations followed; two bands from the ateneo grade School (agS) performed on stage. One performed a Beatles song titled “Twist and Shout,” the same song performed in last year’s grade 6 elocution and interpretative read-

The Mass of the holy Spirit took place at the covered courts

from 7:0-8:0am last July 15. every-one in the ateneo grade School (agS) family attended includ-ing teachers, students, and staff.

Since this was the first mass of the school year, it was important to the whole agS community. They participated by listening, praying, and singing with the old ateneo Boys choir. They all lis-tened to the priest’s homily and re-joiced, especially during the lord’s Prayer and when they could say, “Peace be with you” to everyone.

The eaglet ß 7

ing contest. The other got the crowd going with a rock song.

The games included a jump rope race (you had to jump rope to a point and back) and hula-hoop races (you had one person in the hula-hoop with two other people. The objective was not to let the person inside touch the hula-hoop. The second one involved three people in the hula-hoop and you had to prevent the hoop from falling without holding on to it) among others.

last, but not least the least – the grade 7 teachers actually danced! Towards the end of the dance, students found them-selves clapping and cheering for their respective class advis-ers. as the program drew to a close, each class was award-ed prizes like board games, a basketball, an electric fan and even a jar of Stick-O for actively participating in the event. Ms. Bermio gave a brief speech and dismissed the students.

after the program was the students’ free time. Most quickly retreated back to their classrooms to grab a flash-light and go ghost hunting with friends and classmates, oth-ers played board games or took a power nap. as if it were a law, everyone stayed up even after lights out time at 1:00 am. Most students seemed restless and excited; they didn’t want to waste precious bonding time sleeping, after all.

Way past lights out, some struggled to get some sleep while others were still up and about, telling stories or jokes, playing board games and strumming a few chords on their guitars. Others even played pranks on those sleeping already – for them, tak-ing a picture of a classmate drooling on his pillow was priceless!

In the morning, people woke up, rubbing their eyes to find the class night already over. The class advisers asked every-one to move in their chairs from outside. Once the classroom was back in its original state, students packed their things and picked up nearby trash. They were dismissed shortly after.

Students went home, still sleepy and grog-gy from sleeping too late. Others seemed disap-pointed, as they felt the day went by too quickly.

as grade 7 students, they are not new to this experience, hav-ing had a father and Son night in grade 4, and two other class nights in grades 5 and 6. This year’s class night was particularly special, because, sadly, it was their last in the grade school. Per-haps, after graduation, they will have another class night but no longer as grade school students, but as high school students.

The Induction of Class Officersby Jose f.a. Santiago | 4-Maranaw

July 0 is the feast of Saint ignatius and the induction of class and Ateneo Grade School Offiers Movement

(AGSCOM) officers.

Officers have a duty to fulfill as officers such as taking care of the class while the teacher is not around. The of-ficers’ schedule is more hec-tic than others’ because of all the meetings they have to at-tend without forgetting to do their home works and study for quizzes. They serve their classmates and their school through these duties and by being good examples.

Play clean,” said our Physical education (Pe) teacher Mr. Bautista. This was just among his re-

minders during the intramurals Opening last July 12. Middle School teachers and students attended the open-ing, which took place at the covered courts. different sports were featured in the said event. They also showed last year’s UaaP basketball game between the ateneo and de la Salle University.

Since it’s a wonderful new school year, everyone in Middle

School knows what that means. Yes, it’s the time for the exhilarating event, the Miting de avance. in case you don’t know what this is, the Miting de avance is the exciting and suspense-ful time when we elect our class officers and the Ateneo Grade School Class Officers Movement (agScOM) council who will partially lead the school.

There are 5 main officers from the AGSCOM coun-cil: the president, the first and Second vice presi-dents, the secretary, and the treasurer. Their job is to make well-thoug0ht-of decisions for the inter-est of the students and the school. They should also be good role models to their fellow students.

Those who are nominated must have good aca-demic and deportment grades. Once chosen, they may form parties with interesting names or just be in-dependent candidates. They should also prepare campaign materials to boost their chances of win-ning and a speech during the Miting de avance. Their speeches must contain their stands or what they plan to do for the entire school. This year’s Miting de avance took place last July 5 in the covered courts. Don’t forget that voting for our officers should not be based on their popularity but on their leadership skills.

If you think being a class officer is tough, being AG-SCOM officers is an even tougher job because their re-sponsibility involves all students in the Middle School, not just their classmates. This school year’s new agScOM officers are: President Raul Alberto Arellano III, First Vice President Kevin henson, Second Vice President francisco rigor Ventura, Secretary John Maverick cuyugan, and Treasurer Robert Andres Puno. Class officers have already been elected for each class. let’s hope that we voted wisely and that our new officers all become great leaders.

The grade five class night happened last July 20 in the ateneo grade School (agS) campus. it was a

time for the grade five boys to experience bonding with each other at a different and more exciting level.

as one of the boys, i brought my sleeping mat, pillow, and some money. We didn’t bring a lot of things since we will be spending just one night at the school grounds.

The class night was billed as “Transfivers” after the popular cartoon-turned-movie Transformers. The grade five students and faculty were present as the main program happened at the covered courts. all the dance numbers were so cool because the per-formers gladly gave their best while they danced.

Animax… Fun to the max: Grade 6 Class Night

animax fun to the Max is the title of the grade 6 class night, which

took place last July 6. it was named by rod Jacob cortex of 6-agoncillo. The class night is a break from school work and an alternate world of pure fun.

after dismissal, some students swam in the pool while others stayed in the class-room playing board games and cards. Others rushed to the food stalls for bar-beque, pizza, and drinks. When the pro-gram began, our headmaster fr. fermin and assistant headmaster Mrs. amante, together with teachers from other grade levels joined us in the covered courts.

during the program, many of us were really excited to present our dances and cheers. We spent all week practic-ing for this night. There were games for everyone. My favorite was the Balloon Burst. Unfortunately, my classmate burst our balloon too soon. When the program was about to end, Mrs. castañeda, our grade level coordinator (glc), gave us some last minute reminders. after that, we were free to bond, enjoy and have fun with everyone in the grade level.

When the program ended, my classmates and i had an adventure going ghost hunting around agS. i was able to sleep when all the lights were turned off at ex-actly midnight. When we woke up, we went up to the roof deck for some exercises such as jumping jacks, bending, and the like. it was just what we need-ed since it was very cold up there in the morning.

after that, we went back to our homes. it felt like going into another dimension again. The night before had been a venue for me to explore, have fun, and meet new faces. This just might be one of the most memorable nights ever!

Bigay Puso LaunchBy Stef allen S. aranas | 4-Mangyan

each grade level that belongs to the Middle School had their separate Bigay Puso launches around July and august. We had our launch in the grade 4 last July while both grades and

7 had theirs last august 14.

for our launch, the administrators had prepared a slideshow presentation. Our teachers also told us the values of giving and sharing.

now, what do we do? We give and share what we have to our less fortunate brothers and sisters. each peso we spare means a lot to them so, every time you see the Bigan Puso alkansya, ask yourself, “do i have any pesos to spare?”

let us give, share, help, and feel the reward as we see the smiles on the people’s faces.

general assembly (ga) was can-celled last august 17. all the stu-dents of the ateneo grade School (agS) were supposed to celebrate it in the covered courts. To make up for this, class advisers held mini celebrations with their classes.

every year, the students cel-ebrate linggo ng Wika to know, cherish and be proud of our na-tional heritage. during the cel-ebration, some teachers and stu-dents perform some indigenous dances from some parts of the Philippines such as davao. also, each grade level chants some words in different filipino dialects.

last august 1, the Primary School students wore traditional filipino costumes such as barongs and farming clothes to show their pride for our country. Middle School stu-dents, on the other hand, brought filipino foods such as puto, chich-aron and sisig and shared it among their classmates and teachers dur-ing their recess. in 6-Tandang Sora and 6-Jacinto, some students even brought lechon for everybody!

even though there was no proper linggo ng Wika gen-eral assembly, teachers hope that the students still have their filipino Pride and Spirit in them.

Welcome back to school, fellow ateneans! it’s time to face another year of new lessons, teachers, friends,

and guardians. in case you’re wondering what guardians are, they are bodyguards you’ll be needing to have around you due to the number of bullies around campus.

Bullies have been around since the world has been created. even biblical characters like Mary Magdalene were bullied! Bullies have been known to be pests. They distract us in everything that we do, like when we are eating during lunchtime. They suddenly slap our back hard to get our attention. even though bullies are not the type of pests that go away with repellants, people still find ways to make the world a bully-free place. Sure, a lot of us have been bullied and just like the others, we try to find ways to make them go away. We’ve come up with a couple of ideas.

Violence? no, of course not. Whoever said that violence solved anything? When we think about it, wars bring about more destruction than salvation. Bullies are considered nuisance in school as opposed to being revered as kings. They’re looked down upon because the only thing they can do is throw curse words at you and punch you. not much of the intellectual types, you see. Sure, maybe for guys like us, it’s very normal to brag about our egos and get them large enough. If you got it, flaunt it. But, we say don’t flaunt it too much. You’ll end up too pompous. remember, they’re only insecure, that is why they pick on people.

When faced with a bully, first thing that you do is to gather up a lot of friends. Bullies can’t really stand up for themselves at times when they are on their own. next, don’t get near the place where they usually hang out, as they are pretty territorial. By doing this, you stay away from trouble. Third, if in case you encounter one, ignore him or talk to him about his problem with you. if you talk to him, though, you should know when to stop and restrain yourself from getting angry and pulling a punch or any violent act. remember that too much of something is bad enough. if things get really sticky, well, it’s time to tell a teacher, a counselor or your parents. They’ll do the rest.

remember that there are bullies almost everywhere. They will always be around. Whether we like it or not, we’re all going to have to learn to live with them. Think of them as obstacles that will make you stronger and more prepared to face tougher challenges. Once you get through them, expect yourself to be one step closer to

hellO??? KOKOY??? Wala... binayaran lang naman yan...” These are few of the phrases that my batch mates used to tease me during and after the

a cOMelec chairman means so many things. not only does it mean leading a group of people to count votes after the elections but it also means being an example of responsibility and respect for others. as soon as i learned that i was the one chosen for the position, i was ecstatic. i was so excited to know that i was going to be part of a group of students who were going to lead the elections.

I was entrusted with three main tasks during my term of office and I en-joyed all of those tasks. My first task was to be the Master of Ceremonies for the Miting de avance of the Middle School (MS). When i found out that i was going to lead the ceremonies, I was pretty nervous at first but soon af-ter, i thought of it as an opportunity to introduce myself to the MS commu-nity as this school year’s cOMelec chairman. during the event i did my best to deliver my message as chairman so that each one of them will know what to do during the affair. after the occasion, i thanked god because i was able to get through it without passing out because of nervousness.

My second task was to get the votes of three grade 5 sections, spe-cifically 5-Pasong Tirad, 5-Pinaglabanan, and 5-Pugad Lawin. This was really an enjoyable experience because i was able to see the excite-ment on the faces of the grade 5 students while they were all voting.

The third and most important task i had was to tally the votes of all the MS students and proclaim the names of the winning candidates. after

the cOMelec members and i summed up all the votes and knew who the winners were, I felt a certain amount of gratification in-

side because i knew that my batch mates and i did a great job during the whole election period. When the time came

to announce the names of the winners on July 10, i read the names of each winning candidate with pride and satis-faction because i felt that we, in the cOMelec, worked hard to determine the winners for the agScOM election.

This experience taught me two very important life les-sons that i think each and every person can apply to his or her daily life. These are teamwork and trust. Teamwork – because a person cannot do everything by himself, he will always need a helping hand every once in a while; and

trust – because a person can only help other people and build friendships with them if he trusts them and vice versa.

This experience in my life taught me so many things and that is why i thank god that he gave me this chance to serve my

fellow ateneans as this year’s agScOM cOMelec chairman.

About Bleachauthor/Mangaka: Tite Kuborating: Pg-1genre: action, SupernaturalSome facts: Bleach is a popular animé and manga created in Japan in 2004 and 2001, respectively. it follows the story of Kurosaki ichigo, a 15 year-old high school student who has the ability to see ghosts.

Story: 4.5/5 One day, Kurosaki ichigo (main char-acter), who has the ability to see ghosts, is visited by a shinigami (death god) named Kuchiki rukia. Shinigami are spirits who wield swords of various shapes, sizes, and abilities (zanpakuto or Soul Slayer). Their job is to defeat evil spirits called hollows, who devour the souls of those who have supernatural powers and to send good souls called the Pluses to the afterlife.

Art: 4.25/5 The art of the animé and manga is okay for me. The expression on the character’s face tells exactly how they feel at the moment. The art dur-ing the comedy scenes is typical ani-mé, though. googly eyes – check. Silly facial expressions – check. all there.

The animation is great. Nice and fluid too, especially the fight scenes. This is what makes the action of the animé so excit-ing to watch. They’re a bit graphic, but the animation makes all the difference.

Personally, i like the character designs the best. each character is unique, and all of them have their own distinct fea-tures such as Yasutora “chad” Sado, who is of Mexican descent and has a darker

and taller than his Japanese friends.

Music: 4.5/5Every sound or background music fits perfectly with the mood of the scene the characters are. The opening theme for season one, “asterisk” by Orange range, is very catchy. explosions, sword-swinging, supernatural sounds; great stuff and works fine and dandy.

The voice actors (or seiyuu) do a very good job of portraying the characters. There is a lot of emotion and expression on the voice acting. it’s nice to listen to.

Overall: 4.5/5 Bleach is a very original animé apart from your usual upbeat alternatives, such as Pokémon. The story is rather in-triguing, and you’ll be very interested as you watch more episodes. comedy and humor also deserve a place of men-tion in this review because of the hilari-ous scenes. After you finish an episode or chapter, you’ll dread waiting for the next one just to see what happens. it is very exciting and doesn’t get boring at all. all in all, Bleach is very promising.

as a grade school student, it’s normal for all of us to

play video games. right now, i am captivated by the Play Station 2 game Tales of the abyss by Makoto Yoshizumi.

Narrative Tales of the abyss is about luke fon fabre, the son of duke fon fabre, the king of Baticul in the land of aul-drant. While training, a mys-terious intruder attempts to kill Van grants, his master (SPOiler Warning! read On if YOU dOn’T Plan On BUYing The gaMe Or if YOU JUST WanT TO SPOil YOUr-Self!). The intruder lands on the ground and comes into contact with luke, there-fore causing a “hyperreso-nance” with him (abyss nerd! “hyperresonance: a very powerful ability that is used when two fonists of the same type use their abilities in tandem. it allows its user(s) to tear apart the fonons of any matter and then re-construct them. normally, it takes two fonists to cause one, but there are two char-acters within the story, luke and asch, who can cause one on their own. a fonist is a person who can manipu-late fonons, the thing that composes everything in the world). luke then gets stuck with Tear grants (Van’s sis-ter, also a Seventh fonist) in the Tataroo Valley. They find ways to go back to Baticul while meeting some of their friends: guy cecil, colo-nel Jade curtis, natalia l.K. lanvaldear, anise Tatlin, fon Master ion and many more.

Graphics: 3.5/5 i’d say that the graphics aren’t that much of an eye can-dy, but the effects are! Just look at the mystic artes! So far, the Tales series is the only game i know with characters who actually chant while casting artes/magic. The downside is, because of chanting, casting takes some time. The skits are drawn as if they’re manga characters. i get so worked up see-ing all of their mystic artes, especially luke’s “lost fon drive”. Music: 3/5 The genre of music used was mostly rock. The song “Karma” by a Japanese band was used as the theme song for the game. There were times i was not really impressed by the composition.

Gameplay: 4.5/5 now this is what i’m talking about! The gameplay was im-pressive. Tales of the abyss uses the flex range linear Mo-tion Battle style, wherein the character can run in the bat-tle area freely while holding the l2 button of the controller. When the user does not hold the l2 button while running, the character runs straight to the enemy. as i said, this is the only game i know which chants while casting magic. i’m the type of gamer who likes magical types, not the brute types. This is also the game which actually used voices in the PS1.

forgot what was on the news last Wednesday?

can’t do mental math very fast? is your brain lazy? if yes, Brain age helps… a lot. Just like your body, your brain needs to exercise too! and how do you exercise your brain? One is by solv-ing Math equations. anoth-er is by memorizing. Ques-tion: Why do we not do these activities so often? answer: it’s usually boring. But Brain age solves this problem. With Brain age, you exercise your brain and have fun also.

About Brain Age Brain age has a lot of fun activities. You start your training by taking a test. This test, also known as Brain age check, measures your brain age by giving you a short quiz. While tak-ing this test, the console measures your speed and accuracy. afterwards, your training begins.

The goal of the game is to raise your brain age by doing fun and educational activities. Some activi-ties include mental math, drawing from memory, and reading aloud. This enjoyable game even includes a wide collection of Sudoku. But almost every

educational lesson comes with a teacher, and for Brain age, that teacher is dr. Kawashima. he could really get annoying when he explains your brain age and when he tries to make jokes and ends up with bad puns. another irritating fact is that it only appears on the nintendo dS, and not all has this console.

although this game is not everyone’s cup of tea, it is one of the best education-al games ever.

Graphics: 2.5/5 The only thing that looks good and -d here is dr. Kawashima’s head be-cause this game is just for knowledge. The rest is 2-d.

Sound: 3.5/5 The game’s sound is a weird and interesting mix of orchestra and every-day noise which fits to this game.

Gameplay: 4/5 With fun activities and a lot of information, this game is very entertaining.

Overall: 4/5 This game is total must-have for almost everyone.
