Going to conferences and connecting with other Montessorians in that setting is so important for us in professional growth. When you are together with so many individuals who share your passion for Montessori education and who have had similar successes and challenges, it renews your ability to look at everything fresh. This week I submitted the Eagle Peak Montessori renewal packet to the Mt. Diablo Unified School District. The partnership we have forged over the past 18 years with MDUSD is a truly unique relationship. We have worked hard to be a positive collaborator with the district over the years. We will update you on the process of our renewal as it develops. We will not have a Friday Folder next week prior to Spring Break! Have a great weekend! Notes from CCC (Community Connection Committee) Spring is here, and many fun holidays come with it! For example, Mexica (pronounced Meshica) New Year was Notes from CCC (con’t) (Community Connection Committee) celebrated during the second week of March. It is a celebration based on the Aztec calendar to honor Mother Earth, the gods, relatives, ancestors and the Native way of life. The celebration includes a sunrise ceremony, the powerful drums and the Aztec dancers in full regalia. The Mexica New Year is considered a very sacred celebration. Cultural holidays certainly don't provide a complete understanding of any group of people, but if treated as a learning opportunity they can be a start to that understanding. After last weekend's St. Patrick's Day--a holiday that you may have taken as an opportunity to honor those with Irish ancestry...or maybe just as a reason to party like most of the country ;)--and the Mexica New Year, this week brings Norooz, the Persian New Year. In Iran, the first day of spring signals the biggest celebration of the year for many families. Customs like cooking a special meal of herbed green rice and fish, creating a special altar with symbols of spring, prosperity and fertility, and visiting relatives to give money and sweets is something that is looked forward to every month of the year. Interestingly, when Iran's government became strongly Islamic, Norooz (which is not a Muslim holiday but an ancient Persian nature-based holiday) was disallowed. But the people of Iran were so passionate about this time-honored celebration that many of them defied the government to carry out their customs. Eventually this defiance was so wide-spread that the government gave up on trying to ban the holiday, and today's Norooz celebrations in Iran often incorporate the ancient customs along with religious elements from Islam.

Going to conferences and connecting with other Montessorians in that setting is so important for us in professional growth. Notes from CCC (con’t) (Community Connection Committee) Many of you are aware that the western Muslim community just suffered an extreme tragedy, and while Norooz is not a Muslim tradition, it is celebrated by many followers of the Muslim faith. As the new season of spring begins, perhaps this holiday can be a fresh opportunity for learning and support... for Middle Easterners, for Muslims, and for all members of cultural or religious minority groups who are facing oppression

or assault.
