Based on the philosophies of Italian physician Maria Montessori (1870-1952), the Montessori classroom creates an important foundation for a lifetime of creative learning. The strength of the Montessori classroom lies in: Belief Maria Montessori believed that children possess a unique sensitivity and intellectual ability, allowing them to absorb and learn the environment. Nurturing Environment A safe, stimulating learning environment encourages children to explore, preparing them to become independent learners, forming positive habits for life-long learning. Staff Calm, caring teachers facilitate classroom activity. They are trained to deal with children individually as they progress from one activity to the next. Children A child-centered approach to learning allows children to work side by side on activities they choose. This helps them develop social skills, self- confidence and a love of learning. Areas of Learning Practical Life Through practical life exercises, children learn to care for themselves, one another and their environment. They help develop concentration, coordination and independence. Sensorial Materials in the sensorial area allow the child to analyze and explore. This helps them broaden and refine sense perceptions. Math Math materials and manipulatives allow for concrete experience with number concepts. The children are introduced to the quantity 1-10 and progressively 1-1000. Language Language exercises nourish the child’s vocabulary, enhance self-expression and develop a foundation for reading, writing and listening skills. Cultural Science, history, geography, art and music introduce the child to the world and opens the child’s mind to the vastness of learning what our world has to offer. Enrichment The curriculum also includes programming in languages and physical education. What is the Montessori method? Montessori School of Regina Established in 1971, the Montessori School of Regina is a non-profit organization managed by a volunteer board of directors and staffed by experienced, certified Montessori teachers. Programs Pre-school/kindergarten Half day – 2.5 to 6 years Full day – 4.5 to 6 years old (based on readiness) Our pre-school/kindergarten classrooms are resourced with Montessori materials, trained Montessori teachers and experienced Teaching Assistants. In this multi- generational environment children are able to explore the Areas of Learning, each year in the program building on the previous year. Elementary Full day – 6 to 9 year olds New in fall 2006, our elementary program offers the opportunity to continue Montessori education into the elementary years.
