Prolific Ely fundraiser Xander Brown may only be eight – but he’s about to embark on his sixth bike ride for Magpas Air Ambulance – and this time, he’s set the bar higher still.
On August 7 the Ely St John’s year three student will endeavour a 50 mile cycle to and around Cambridge over two days to raise money for his favourite charity.
Xander has raised over £1200 for Magpas and has twice been invited to visit the lifesaving team at their base in Huntingdon.
Xander first became interested in fundraising at the age of five when his mum, Michelle, decided to take part in Comic Relief.
“He really liked the idea and said he wanted to do something for charity. Then one day we were shopping and Xander spotted one of the Magpas collection tins at the till and asked me, ‘What is the cool helicopter about?’ I explained and the rest is history!”
That year, Xander completed an impressive eight mile bike ride – something he has repeated and improved on every year since.
Last year, at the age of seven, he cycled 28 miles.
Not to be outdone, he hopes his 50-mile bike challenge will raise even more money for “a charity that saves lives every day with no government funding”.
Set up 45 years ago, Magpas Air Ambulance has over 60 highly trained doctors and paramedics, many of whom are volunteers and support the Ambulance Service.
Magpas attend incidents of life-threatening illness or major trauma across the East of England and beyond. In March alone they were dispatched 130 times.

Lucy Frazer, Member of Parliament for South East Cambridgeshire, brought parents, carers and Ely College management together to discuss the future of the school on Friday 20th May. This meeting, called by Ms Frazer, was primarily to address the change in the school’s sponsor from CfBT Schools Trust to Cambridge Meridian Academies Trust (CMAT) on July 1st, and to facilitate a dialogue between parents and carers of pupils and the new Trust.
Mark Woods, Chief Executive of CMAT, made a clear presentation about CMAT’s plan for Ely College going forward.
Measures suggested included the introduction of a school house system; a drive in teacher recruitment; and remedial work on school buildings. Mr Woods also stressed the importance of positivity and pride in the school.
Ms Frazer says: “The meeting was a great success in prompting an open discussion with parents and carers of pupils at Ely College and the new sponsors, CMAT. It is clear that CMAT has experience in turning schools around, and has positive ideas for the future of the school. I look forward to seeing CMAT put these ideas into practise in the coming months.”

New Service for 2016HARD FLOOR CLEANING
A project to help provide essential items for children and young people who may not have access to basics, such as toothpaste and soap, has been set up in partnership with the Police and East Cambridgeshire District Council.
The packs of basic toiletries, underwear and other essential care items will be made available through schools, GP services, food banks and other community-based organisations with the help of East Cambridgeshire Community Safety Partnership.
The project was set up after Police noted that some young shoplifters were stealing simply to provide themselves with such basics as underwear, deodorant and personal hygiene items that, for a variety of reasons, were not being provided at home.
Keen to ensure that young people did not end up carrying out criminal behaviour because of poverty or neglect, Crime Reduction Officer for East Cambridgeshire, Sue Loaker, decided to launch “Essentials By Sue.” This would give young people access to care packages of essential daily items so they did not suffer embarrassment or, in the worst case, resort to theft.
The project is supported by funding from the East Cambridgeshire Community Safety Project. Children in need of help will be identified by school, healthcare professionals, social services and other partner agencies and will be able to access these packs discreetly.
Sue Loaker said: “Essentials By Sue is a project that is being launched to protect the dignity and comfort of young ladies and men in East Cambridgeshire. Whilst often a necessity that is easy for many of us to take for granted, there are some that are struggling to get regular access to toiletries, sanitary items and underwear.
“Our fear is that lack of access to the most basic items not only causes discomfort for young people, but can also lead to embarrassment and bullying by their peers that can cause low confidence and a lack of self-esteem. In the worst cases, Police have seen young people resorting to crime in order to get hold of these essentials.”
The project, launching on May 26, will put together and distribute feminine and masculine care packages, toiletries and underwear to young people in need and also aim to support advice about healthy living and personal care.

Party animal and fitness fanatic Jenni Homent can’t bear to miss out on socialising or exercising.
So when the Ely mum of two discovered a full-on fitness regime that combined both, she was instantly hooked.
Since joining JTS – which prides itself on being “the toughest bootcamp in Ely” – back in January, the dedicated runner has managed to shave off two minutes per mile, improve on her already hectic social life and embrace each day with a smile.
Jenni says: “After working out whilst the sun rises, I feel ready to face the day. I also find the varied exercises fun, like flipping tyres!”
The mum to Maisie, five, and Josie, three, says that after completing an early morning workout (which starts at 6.30am), “I’m an extremely happy mum, ready to face the school run.”
After holidaying with Ashley Gifford and partying with hot pants-wearing Lucy Thorne, who both attend classes, Jenni started to feel that she was missing out on something good.
“I thought this JTS Fitness gets results! I also had
FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) when a few of my friends, all members, attended a JTS Christmas party! I thought that’s it, I’m going to the next party – if it involves exercise then I’ll just have to deal with that.
“I also wanted to see my friends more regularly and with their busy lives this seemed the best course of action.”
As well as Ashley and Lucy, friends Sarah Chatterton, Sarah Salmons, Elise Jones, Dominic Gifford and Tom Jones also attend, so the classes, taught by instructor, Josh Taylor-Smith, have become a very social affair, despite being incredibly physically challenging.

Fit and fun: Ely mum says Ely bootcamp makes her face each day with a smile

Jenni says: “I have run for years always doing the 10k in one hour six and found it difficult to reduce my mile timings to anything less than 11 minutes.
“I have attended JTS sessions since January and although they aren’t purely cardio based within five months I am now running just under nine minute miles and I do less running practice!”
Every week Jenni seems to be running another personal best, she says.
“JTS has enhanced my life, not just through being fitter but also my general well being. Now I’ll put going to a JTS session first over going to a party! The hot pants are work in progress.”
JTS sessions take place at 6.30am and 6.30pm behind the Ely Rugby Club off Downham Road.

Rewarding volunteering
An innovative scheme encouraging groups to give their time to their community in exchange for rewards has recently been launched in Ely – and those behind it hope its popularity will soar.
Cambridgeshire Time Credits project manager Yannick Auckland says many people who have never volunteered before are putting their names forward – and gaining free activities in return.
A handful of local organisations have already signed up to Time Credits, including Arts Development in East Cambridgeshire (ADeC), Ely Young People’s Project, The Countess of Ely Free Church, Littleport Timebank and the Care Network Community Development.
Ms Auckland hopes to expand the scheme, which brings together communities, charities, councils and businesses to encourage volunteering and sustainable community projects and services.
Speaking at a workshop in Ely last Friday, she said: “Time banking is about people giving their time to each other. Time credits are a little bit of extra flow added to that. It’s about groups
giving their time. We have schools, we have children’s centres, we have charities. For every hour that they give of their time they get an hour back.”
Through time credits, people are encouraged to get involved in their communities by volunteering their time to run groups, after school clubs, bingo nights, comedy events, community cafes and other services.People can share their skills and experiences in different ways – such as by teaching cookery courses, IT skills, information and advice. Or they can sit on committees, take part in consultations or contribute to newsletters. Alternatively they can help to maintain or improve the local environment, such as by litter picking or weeding in public areas.
For every hour they bank up through volunteering, they get a credit, which can be exchanged for fun activities, such as swimming or going to the cinema.
Ms Auckland said: “We are getting people who don’t traditionally volunteer to do so.”
More than half of those taking part in Time Credits have never volunteered before, she said.
“They get empowered.”

Selfless Sophia – the Ely schoolgirl featured on the front cover of last weeks E4Ely Magazine – has already raised more than twice her target to help youngsters battling with cancer.
As reported by Spotted in Ely, Sophia Isaacs, 10, is planning to have her luscious locks bobbed at the Pure Ely salon on July 2 to raise money for the The Little Princess Trust, a charity that provides real hair wigs to children who have lost their own hair due to cancer treatment.
The St John’s School year five pupil was initially hoping to raise at least £100 in sponsorship for the charity – but thanks to people’s generosity, including that of Spotted in Ely followers, she has already raised £210 in less than a week.
When you factor in Gift Aid donations, the total is a staggering £252.50.

Children urged to think about plight of refugees
in poster contest
Looking for something creative and thought-provoking to do with the kids this half-term?
Children across East Cambridgeshire are invited to consider the meanings of the words “home” and “refuge” in a poster competition aimed at increasing awareness and compassion for Syrians escaping war and persecution.
The competition, organised by the Ely Refugee Resettlement Campaign, is open to children of all ages, with prizes sponsored by local businesses.
On its website, the ERRC says: “In the fifth year of the Syrian War and with the increased coverage in the media of the plight of the refugees, ERRC is working to raise the awareness of school children in the area of the refugees’ situation, and to show that we are all human beings, deserving of a safe home.”
Those behind the competition hope that it will encourage those taking part to “discuss what the refugees are without, what they are looking for and what would make them happy, for example, safety, security, shelter, love, haven, hideaway, respect, worth, compassion.”
The title and theme for the poster is ‘REFUGE’, or, for younger pupils, ‘HOME’. Entries will be split into Key stages 1, 2, 3 and 4, with the winning entries and posters being displayed at Ely Library and at various events across the city, including Isle of Ely Arts Festival, Aquafest, and during Refugee Week (19th- 26th June).
The competition, which closes on June 7, will be judged by Ian Lindsey, the Mayor Elect of Ely, local artist Barbara Grafton and Dr Dee McCormack, a local GP, who is part of the ERRC.
Prizes have been donated by Burrows Bookshop, City Cycle Centre, Ely Fudge Company, Tindalls, Toppings and Co, WH Smith and Wilkinson’s.

Two Tesco Ely employees are preparing for a fundraising walk to keep “the memory alive” of two long-serving colleagues who tragically died within a day of each other.
On June 26 Shirley Hammond and Mel Starling will lead a scenic walk from Tesco supermarket along the Ely riverside and back to raise cash for Arthur Rank Hospice and the Alzheimer’s Society, together with family members, friends, colleagues and customers.
They hope other people will join them on their walk or sponsor these two worthy causes, the chosen charities of Angie Squires and Marlene Emery.
Back in January, Tesco staff, their families and friends – and over 30 days – took part in a charity walk from Downham Market to the Animal Rescue Centre in Denver to raise money for Arthur Rank Hospice and the animal shelter.
Soham grandmother Angie – a prolific fundraiser, who had raised £1000 for Macmillan Cancer Support – managed to make the start of the event, despite battling terminal cancer.
Angie, who was being cared for by Arthur Rank Hospice, died the following Sunday, on January 24, aged just 54.
The day before March grandmother Marlene had suffered a fatal heart attack at the age of 61. Marlene’s husband Malcolm, who had Alzheimer’s disease, had also recently passed away.
Remembering lost friends – and raising cash for their chosen charities
Tali [email protected]
Shirley said: “All in all it’s been quite a sad time for colleagues at Tesco. Angie was on the till with us and Marlene worked in the garage. Both were long serving colleagues.”
On their fundraising page, Shirley and Mel say: “Marlene and Angie were wonderful ladies, full of life, and taken from us at a young age, and we would like to keep them both in our thoughts as we do the walk and raise money for their two chosen charities, Alzheimer’s and Arthur Rank Hospice.”
The two friends hope to beat the £620 they raised in January.
“If this one is a success too we hope to do this every year for them both to keep their memory alive.”
The memorial walk will take place at 10.30am outside Tesco. A suggested donation for those wishing to take part is £1.50 or £5 per family. The walk will end at Tesco, where there will be a tombola, games and other activities to raise money for Arthur Rank Hospice and the Alzheimer’s Society.

Cambridgeshire’s top cop is so impressed by a local young artist’s creation that he has personally requested to keep it in his office.
Harry Redman, 13, was not shortlisted in the 11 to 13-years category in last month’s ArtReach 2016 – an awards scheme celebrating creative young people across East Cambridgeshire.
But Cambridgeshire Chief Constable Alec Wood was so impressed by Harry’s piece, depicting a couple embracing, that he wrote to him, asking if he could keep it in his office at Police Headquarters in Hinchingbrooke.
Sgt Phil Priestley said: “When the shortlisting was done locally, Mr Wood didn’t get to see Harry’s piece.
“When he saw it on display before the event he immediately pointed it out as his favourite.”
The theme of the contest was “mood or emotion”, and police were hoping to use winning pieces to decorate the “stark white walls” of the newly refurbished Ely Police Station.
Harry has granted the Chief Constable permission to
keep his work on display at Headquarters and promises to follow up with another submission for next year’s Art Reach.
The final event, hosted at Kings School in Ely last month, saw 18 young artists shortlisted and five awarded prizes for their outstanding submissions.

featuresAn Ely primary school is fundraising for a lifesaving defibrillator – and is looking for residents and companies to donate prizes towards its annual summer fair.
Friends of the Lantern School, the Lantern Community School’s fundraising committee, is hosting the Lantern Summer Fete on June 25.
Its members hope proceeds will help raise cash for the emergency device, which sends electric shocks to the heart and can help save lives during cardiac arrest and other critical medical conditions.
The school, which is signed up to the Forest Schools scheme, is also saving for an outdoor classroom that would be used for numerous activities.
FOTLs is looking for prizes aimed at children and adults to go in a raffle and tombola, as well as any financial donations and contributions.
The fundraising committee also has stalls available for craftspeople and businesses to hire on the day, at a cost of £10 per stall.
Activities planned throughout the afternoon include a bouncy castle, zorbing balls, an obstacle course, glitter tattoos, refreshments and a barbecue, games and performances from the Lane Academy dance school.
All proceeds go towards the Lantern Community Primary School.
The fete will take place from 12pm to 3pm on the school grounds in Nene Road, Ely.

We have recently gone to press with a story about how Francesca Galelli and Molly Curtis (aged 13) are helping us to launch a youth consultation panel that is aimed at improving our relationship with young people of school age in East Cambs.
The ages 12 - 16 are incredibly formative - and to be absolutely fair we do struggle to communicate clearly
with this age group, both with young men and young women.
Communication is not just about delivering messages - it's about listening too. It's not just about what young people mean to the future of the district - it's about what the district needs to do for young people right now.
So we are creating a panel of young people who we can regularly consult with, and listen to, to help us improve.
Sgt Phil Priestley offers:
"We've got a genuine appetite to improve the relationship we have with young people and we have a host of plans and initiatives to support that. We need to get it right - we don't want to guess, we want to consult. Young people are as important to us as school leavers and adults.
"We're not looking for a group of fans who want to celebrate the police and think we're brilliant. We want young people with ideas, who are ready to challenge us, and want to participate in a meaningful dialogue that will carry us forward."
The Consultation Panel will sit for the first time at the end of July. East Cambs Police are seeking another eight people to make up a ten person group.
If you are the right person for this group, get in touch with us now by sending a private message, or stop in at Ely police station and ask for Sgt Phil Priestley. If you know the right person - please forward this to them or speak to them about getting involved.
Youth Consultation Panel - We need you!

The Ely Foodbank on Barton Road has made a fresh appeal for donations to help under privilege families in the East Cambridgeshire region.
Food can be donated at the Ely branches of Sainsbury, Tesco, Nisa (Market Street) and Waitrose. Soham donations can be received at Asda and Co-op. Chatteris and March donations can be received at the Co-ops and the March Tesco. Littleport donations can be recieved at Co-op.
Currently they urgently need:
Milk (UHT or powdered)Sugar (500g)Fruit Juice (carton)Pasta SaucesSponge pudding (tinned)Tomatoes (tinned)CerealsRice Pudding (tinned)Instant CoffeeInstant mash potatoTinned meat/fishTinned vegetablesTinned fruitJam andBiscuits or snack bars
How a foodbank worksFood is donated
The main way that food is donated is though ‘Supermarket Collections’. These collections engage the public at supermarkets where they are met by volunteers who give them a ‘foodbank shopping list’ and ask them to buy an extra item with their shop, which is then donated to the foodbank. Schools, churches, businesses and individuals also donate non-perishable, in-date food to the foodbank. All food given out by foodbanks is donated.
Food is sorted and stored
Once collected, the food is sorted by volunteers who check it’s in date and pack it into boxes ready to be given to people in need.
Frontline professionals identify people in need
Care professionals such as doctors, health visitors, social workers, Citizens Advice Bureau staff, welfare officers, the police and proabation officers amongst others identify people in crisis and issue them with a foodbank voucher.
Clients receive food
Foodbank clients bring their voucher to a foodbank centre where it can be exchanged for three days supply of emergency food. Volunteers meet clients over a cup of tea and are able to signpost people to agencies able to solve the longer-term problem.
Fresh calls for Foodbank donations
