Shop Local and Keep Local

We have been criticsed by some people in the area of not being receptive to local businesses because we have featured some news articles about a supermarket store in Ely.

Well, we think the opposite! When we see a story about local businesses we feature them the best we can. Just this week we have featured one existing business who has done so well they have had 25,000 customers and another new business about to start up.

We even shared a video from another local business and as a result their own number of followers has increased and the video went from 300 views to several thousand overnight.

None of these businesses advertise with us and yet gladly we have featured them and why? Because keeping local is an important part of what we do.

A lot of local companies advertise with the national chains in Ely and I speak about the newspapers. They are part of a much bigger business, so this is my plea about "Shop Local" which also means "Keep Local".

I have reiterated on many occasions that just because something is printed thousands of times, it does not mean it is seen thousands of times. Being online means we have statistics that prove the validity of an online

presence and the numbers and the power it has to harness new business.

So from next week we launch "SHOP LOCAL, KEEP LOCAL". An initiative that will give local businesses the chance to see how the brand "Spotted in Ely" is more powerful than any printed material and more information will be drip fed to shops and businesses that ARE truly local.

We have also taken measures to remove fake profiles that people have created to use Spotted in Ely and other social media groups. If we suspect any fake profiles, we will pass on their detais to the Police. You may not be aware but creating fake profiles is illegal and we aim to assist the Police in cyber bullying campaigns.

Cathedral Welcomes Visiting American University Choirs

This week saw the first of 5 concerts in the Lady Chapel by visiting Universities from the United States.

Eastern Michigan University choir conducted by Brandon Johnson hosted the 50 minute concert as their final leg of a tour which has seen them perform in many churches and catherals around England, Scotland and Wales.

Brandon who is the Director of Choral Activities at EMU is responsible for ensuring that the mission statement they hold dear is upheld.

"The EasternMichigan University Choir proudly commit to an unwavering pursuit of artistry and excellence in choral

music. We foster an environment of care for each musician and we value commitment, consistency and perserverance,

all of which lead to artisitc achievement."

The 45 voice choir, not all of whom could attend learn a mixture of orchestral and acapella to undertsand cohesive artistry.

The students have done themselves proud during their tour and I think the words of Andrew Matthews who has been guiding them around while in the UK just shows what an inspiration young people can be.

"It has been my absolute pleasure and honour driving for you guys this last week. That concert today was awesome!

Thank you and I wish you all a safe journey back to Michigan"

If you missed their performance we broadcast it live and it can been here: https://www.facebook.com/SpottedInEly/

DRUGS IN EAST CAMBS CLAMPDOWN – Operation Edison a success story

Last Friday saw the completion of a week long secret operation conducted by East Cambs Police which saw several individuals arrested and charged for under Section 23 of the Misuse of Drugs Act.Code name Operation Edison, many local officers spearheaded by Sergeant Phil Priestly and followed by local members of the press. The mission statement read “Operation Edison is a coordinated effort to impact on the illegal supply of controlled drugs in East Cambs”.

Day 1 – Monday – Briefings in ElyEdison started on Monday with the signing off on the warrants by magistrates followed by 2 briefings, an in depth and lengthy Police only meeting then one with those media outlets interested in taking part to which Spotted in Ely had been invited.

The briefing showed detailed information about the individuals in question and the locations to which the raids would take place. It was initially hoped that all 4 raids would take place at the same time but the manpower needed just was not available and so the Police moved in on each of the 4 targets, one day after the other.

Each raid had been carefully planned using local intelligence to decide at what times of day and what day of week to serve the warrants on the properties. 2 of the properties were designated hard targets (ie forced entry) and 2 were soft targets (ie knock on door entry) due to potentially children being on the scene. 1 warrant was in Ely, 2 in Soham and 1 in Littleport.

Day 2 – Tuesday – ElyThe Police had in the morning despatched 2 observation officers to the vicinity of Springhead Lane where the suspects flat is and they were anticipating a visitor and marked vehicles were held on standby at Ely Police Station to await a sighting of the second person. The second person was thought to be the delivery or supplier of the original suspect but after a wait and no show the Police moved in.

The occupant of the flat Lisa Riches was immediately arrested and a kinder egg containing what was thought to be heroin was discovered. A second female in the property was released as she appeared to have no knowledge of the substances. Stolen items have also been recovered from the property and Riches, 45 from Ely was later charged at Kings Lynn Station for possession

of a Class A drug and further investigations into the stolen items continue.

Also while there, a man approached the property and began to walk away which raised suspicion and undercover officers pursued but after a through search and questioning was also released.

Day 3 – Wednesday – SohamDay 3 was to be a soft target on Kingfisher Drive and not carried out until the early evening. After entering the property a search began to which 10 1/2 oz or 300 grams of cannabis was discovered. A value depending on purity of around £1000 and a small amount of cash also found, thought to be from sale of the product.

While officers were on scene, a second man knocked on the day and when he realised that the Police were inside, well he did a runner and a pursuit followed with him being detained.

Both men were detained on further investigations now continue. Day 4 – Thursday – Soham

A media frenzy surrounded this raid. The Police had hoped to have use of heavy equipment to break down the door as intelligence suggested the door was reinforced. The raid was quick and door was attacked via hinges as the framework was dead bolted in 5 places. The noise from the arrival of Police vehicles and many media vehicles certainly brought out the neighbourhood.

On scene, Ian Clarke from Heron Croft, Soham was arrested and later charged

Page 7: E4Ely - Issue 12

Features

DRUGS IN EAST CAMBS CLAMPDOWN – Operation Edison a success story

with possession of Class A (Heroin) and Class B (Cannabis) drugs following admissions in interview. Police also found a pedal bicycle which was etched and they are hoping to reunite with the owner as soon as possible. Clarke denied knowledge the bike was stolen.

Day 5 – Friday – LittleportThe final day was a soft evening knock on the door but yielded a great result to end the week.

A thorough search of the premises presented evidence of drug dealing and class A drugs (cocaine powder) and class B drugs (herbal cannabis) were seized from the location. In addition there were signs and symptoms of drug preparation on the property. A quantity of cash thought to be slightly less than £2,000 has been seized.

A man and woman have been arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of controlled drugs. They have been detained at the Police Investigation Centre at Kings Lynn overnight and will be interviewed later today.

It is thought that both will be detained for approximately a month on police bail pending analysis of digital media and the controlled substances.

ConclusionIt was a delight to watch the Police doing their duties this week and as we all know drugs are one of the worse issues we could have on the streets of our small city. They lead to various other crimes but on top of breaking down doors and causing the disruption necessary to rid the streets of drugs, it was great to see the Police backed up by PCSO’s who knock on doors of neighbours and explain why they are there and how assistance can be offered.

Sergeant Priestly isn’t done, he plans to take on more issues like these and let the media have all of the details so that exposure can be used as a deterrent against further drug related crime in East Cambs. They certainly helped the media understand every process and gave interviews like the one above after each instance.

The Ely based agency received the Gold award in the Tenant Voting for best Agent in the South East at the prestigious estate and letting agent awards in the UK, the ESTAS, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel on London’s Park Lane on Friday 15th April 2016 attended by 900 of the UK’s top property professionals.

The awards, celebrating their thirteenth year, determine the best estate and letting agents in the UK through research carried out amongst clients who are asked a series of questions about the service they have received from their agent, over 30,000 questionnaires were completed by customers during the competition.

Estate and letting agents were shortlisted in 15 regions around the UK in which Platinum Properties were also shortlisted for the Landlord voted award.

Simon Brown Founder of The ESTAS said “The ESTAS are special because shortlisted and winning firms are selected purely on the service they deliver to their clients. In fact just taking part shows a firm’s commitment to their customers so to be shortlisted is a great achievement in itself and for the winners this is the highest accolade they can receive in the industry.”

Phil Spencer, who has hosted the ESTAS every year since their inception in 2003, said ‘The ESTAS recognises all firms involved in the buying and selling process. Agents, brokers, conveyancers and developers are all judged in exactly the same way, purely on customer feedback. People find moving home to be one of the most stressful experiences of their lives. It is important that agents,

mortgage brokers, conveyancers and developers help make this milestone in their lives as smooth as possible and provide the high quality service the customer expects and deserves, the ESTAS recognize those professionals that are most committed to doing so’Jon Notley, Chief Commercial Officer of headline sponsor Zoopla said, “This is our sixth year sponsoring The ESTAS and we are delighted to be once again supporting this key industry event. Customer feedback is essential to any organisation and it is fantastic to see the best in the industry being recognised for their efforts. Many congratulations to all of this year’s winners.”

Maria Morgan, Managing Director of Platinum Properties, said “We are absolutely thrilled to be recognised at this year’s ESTAS. We were delighted to have been shortlisted in both the landlord and tenant categories initially, which was a huge honor alone given we are a relatively young company, but to win the award voted for by our Tenants means so much to us as we know it’s our customers who have judged our performance. We take our levels of customer service very seriously, which is part of the reason why both myself and Tanya Pearson, despite our many years in the business, are so committed to Platinum Properties becoming a trail blazing company in our approach, because we know clients have a choice. We have always been very proud of the personal service and the personal recommendations we receive for that, but this also proves we are delivering on our promises and we look forward to coming back again next year to fight for a title in both the Landlord and Tenant categories again.”
