GROCERY CHANGE FOR CHARITYIn recent months, various hypermarkets and grocery stores in the Kingdom are giving its customers the option to donate their spare change. At the checkout line, expect the cashier to ask if you would rather give your balance halala or even a riyal. With your consent, they’ll automatically send it to the charitable accounts. It’s an easy way to give back to the community and we’re glad to be trading our loose change for a good cause rather than a stick of gum.

After much anticipation, the Riyadh Metro Project is beginning construction this month. The Metro is considered the backbone of the King Abdullah Project for Public Transport and will be completed by 2018, according to the High Commission for the Development of Arriyadh. Simultaneously, booths have been put up in malls to provide information regarding the project. Upon its completion, we’re hopeful that it would alleviate the traffic in Riyadh and provide a certain level of convenience for female commuters with its all-women designated trains.

Saudi alzheimer’S diSeaSe aSSociation (Sada)

Saudi alzheimer’s disease association (Sada) is based in riyadh but is active throughout the entire Kingdom. their aim is to create awareness campaigns in the form of lectures, workshops and all sorts of programs dedicated to people who suffer from alzheimer’s. Sheikh Safwat al Sagga, caregiver (former sponsor) and association member, tells us his story.

how and why did this organization begin?Years ago, it was clear that the level of public awareness about dementia and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) was very limited. People were reluctant to talk about it or about the associated symptoms or stage of the disease. The idea of establishing an association to fill that gap emerged by a group of women whose parents suffered from AD. Their journey began by searching for others who were interested. Subsequently, 45 enthusiastic men and women made an official application to establish the Saudi Alzheimer’s Disease Association (SADA).

do you personally know someone who suffers from this illness? if so, how did you learn to cope and deal with them?I had a personal experience with the disease through my late wife. She was a unique woman in different aspects; honest, faithful, patient, affectionate and compassionate. She lived her life modestly and was bashful, did not like backbiting. She memorized Quran well and was humorous with everyone. When she began to say, “Let’s go home” (despite being in her home) we did not know it was the beginning of AD. She

began looking for her bedroom and her bed. Gradually, what we thought were jokes increased. Initially, we thought it’s normal aging (oh I wish it was), but we turned to specialists who told us it is AD and that it was getting worse.

Stuttering increased and she forgot how to eat so we began to feed her like a small child. She forgot spontaneous movements like chewing and swallowing so we turned to medical devices. She forgot walking and a lot of things, but didn’t forget God. A physiotherapist daily helped her move her muscles. The worst part was the back ulcers she had but was unable to feel its pain, despite reaching deeply into her spine. She forgot how to breathe so we bought her a respirator and oxygen and the specialist was attending daily to clear her lungs from natural secretions.

It is a journey that does not end with words, but hard efforts to define how to care for affected individuals and minimize errors. I pray to God for those carrying the message of the association as they move on with their awareness campaigns and wish them success.

are there any upcoming events people should know about? There is a permanent charitable project (parents’ charity project) to help Alzheimer’s patients. Those who wish to learn more and follow the most important of these programs can communicate with SADA.

help center

the help center in Jeddah is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of individuals who suffer from certain disabilities. patients at the help center are taught how to live, work and play in environments that suit their needs. maha ahmad al Juffali gives us more background.

how and why did this organization begin? The Help Center is a private organization founded by the late Sheikh Ahmad Al Juffali in 1985. The center consists of services and programs dedicated to the welfare of people with intellectual disabilities. Sheikh Ahmad Al Juffali has always had a passion for encouraging the youth and establishing facilities that allow people with all types of mentalities to gain all they can from life. Thanks to his vision and sense of philanthropy, the Help Center continues to grow and contribute to our society’s welfare.

if you could ask society to do one thing to help, what would it be?To include and integrate persons with intellectual disabilities in all social and cultural activities.

are there any upcoming events people should know about?Yes, we have all sorts of events on a monthly basis. In February, for example, we have Art on the Beach, Field Day and Siblings Day. Please check our website or contact us for more details.

Jeddah inStitute for Speech and hearing (JiSh)

Jeddah institute for Speech and hearing (JiSh) is a non-profit organization aimed at delivering speech and hearing services. in order to deliver nothing but the best, JiSh adopted the american Speech-language-hearing association (aSha) standards of clinical practice.

“In 1983, when our son was diagnosed in the West with a severe to profound hearing loss and needed speech-language therapy, there was none to be had in our hometown of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Two hearing impaired children followed and in the absence of quality services we were forced to travel to the West, in particular to the USA, where our children received the best possible intervention. Today, all our children are educated and lead productive and satisfying lives, having fulfilled their full potential. Sadly, this was not the fate of most of the children in our community with communication disorders; most of them would have very limited opportunities.

As a result, in 1991 the Jeddah Institute for Speech and Hearing (JISH), a non-profit organization, was established to help all those with communication disorders (i.e. articulation, fluency, voice, receptive and expressive language delay, pragmatics, oral/aural rehabilitation, aphasia, etc.) achieve their maximum communication potential.”-Sultana Alireza-Zahid, Founder and Chief Executive Director

alS-Sa

alS Saudi arabia revolves around providing high quality care for people living with alS. through alS-Sa’s website, people can share their experiences with this illness, learn more about it, and learn how to cope with it. Siblings alanoud, noura and lulu Bint faisal Bin migrin Bin abdulaziz give us more insight about alS and how alS-Sa began.

please explain alS:Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also referred to as Motor Neuron Disease, is a serious neurological illness that moves very fast taking away your ability to control your muscles. This terrible disease takes everything from you but your brain, sharp as a tack, and you are unable to do anything about it.

how and why did alS Saudi arabia begin? For us it’s personal; our mother was diagnosed with ALS. We had to read and research it since we had no clue what it is. After two years of learning about it and how to cope with it we decided to launch a website for ALS in Saudi Arabia to help raise awareness of this horrible disease for those who have not experienced it in their family. Since this illness is so expensive too, we would like to help patients with providing equipment they need by donating to the companies on the website and we will be the ones to deliver the equipment to the patients.

do you personally know someone who suffers from this illness? if so, how did you learn to cope and deal with them?Yes, on top of the world and healthy our mother was diagnosed with ALS at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore in 2010 and was told her life was about to change and there was nothing they could do about it. It was very hard watching our mother struggle. Since we knew a little about it, it took us time to learn how to treat an ALS patient – our mother – and we are still learning everyday. Since our mother is fully paralyzed we try to cheer her up by changing the furniture in her room every once in a while, have friends come over, watch comedy movies or series, and etc. For us the best way to cope with it is to talk to other ALS families and share experiences since loved ones become full time caregivers.

if you could ask society to do one thing to help, what would it be?We’d ask them to share this website www.als-sa.org and help us raise awareness. They can also help patients to live their lives easier by buying equipment from companies we provide on the website.

are there any upcoming events people should know about? We just launched the website on Jan. 10. Any future events will be announced on our website. May God help us fight ALS.

What is love? Baby don’t hurt me… Just kidding, I don’t mean the song. I mean, seriously what is love?

Love is a complex emotion you must feel in order to understand. Although common sense, artists and poets use hearts as a symbol of love, it is actually the brain that produces chemical signals to help people understand love. The ancient Greeks came up with the following four terms to describe the different types and styles of love:

Agape: Agape is an unconditional love that accepts someone regardless of his or her imperfections. It revolves around the “giving and expecting nothing in return” type of mentality.

Storge:Storge is the style of love associated with family and in some cases, certain friendships. It is the type of love that family members naturally have for one another. Storge love is unconditional; and forgiveness, comfort and security are words to describe it.

Phileo:This type of love is affectionate, warm and gentle. It makes you want to build a friendship with someone before loving him or her unconditionally. Literally translated, phileo means how you feel about someone.

Eros:Words to describe Eros are intense, passion and new relationships. Eros is when someone in a relationship says “I love you” too soon. It is a romantic type of love that involves risk but is still emotionally beautiful.

love,actually

When it comes to keeping your relationship sweet and meaningful, nothing beats the basics. Yes, a lavish trip for two to a honeymoon destination would be amazing but it’s not something you could do every day. Making a relationship work and staying in love doesn’t take thousands of riyals. Here are some things you could do daily to continuously show your partner that you value them in your life and that is sure to make them feel special and loved.

By Reina Vidad TejanoI am an advocate of hugs and whether it’s the winter season or not, spending an extra five minutes before getting out of bed to cuddle and mumble sweet nothings to your spouse is nothing short of an intimate moment. Never mind that you’re late for work or the kids are causing a commotion in the hall, just give your partner a tight hug and make them feel that nothing stands in between the two of you for that one (or five) seconds of physical togetherness. It can make all the difference in making each other’s day better and brighter.

DESTINATION RIYADH 25DeSTINATION RIYADH 25

In the span of time that you’ve gotten to know your husband or wife, things can get flat – by way of already knowing everything there is to know about each other. But that shouldn’t encourage you to be mediocre, instead get inspired to do something unexpected but significant to your partner. It can be anything simple from a love note posted on the bathroom mirror to a getting a signed memorabilia from his favorite athlete. It’s about paying attention and noticing the little details that usually get filtered out. If done effectively, giving your loved one a surprise will definitely etch you in his or her memory for a long time.

While actions do speak louder than words, I know a lot of people (by people, I mean guys, most of the time) don’t say the actual words “I love you” a lot. Sure, saying it too often may diminish its impact but life is short too. As quoted in one famous movie, “If you love someone, say it, say it right then, out loud. Otherwise, the moment just passes you by.” Sometimes, it’s easy for us to assume that our wives or husbands already know that since we’ve married them already, but letting your loved one hear those words sincerely will always, always warm their hearts.

Nothing brings people together more than food, so why not put on both of your aprons on and get cooking in the kitchen? It doesn’t have to be Food Network-perfect, but cooking together is a simple way to bond. If either one of you doesn’t know how to cook, well it’s a good opportunity for you to teach them something new. If both of you can’t cook, well, let’s just say a food fight can always turn into a romantic activity.

Another opportunity to be creative and show thoughtfulness is by making something with your own hands. It’s easy enough to buy a present at a store, but whether it’s a handwritten card or a scrapbook of your photos and remembrances from your young love days, making each other a homemade present shows you’ve dedicated some real time and effort into making something nice for your partner.

Granted, not a lot of people go around walking in KSA, but there are a lot of spaces where married couples can go for a stroll. Walks can be romantic provided with the right scenery and conversation. Whether you two share that time in silence or walking off a hefty dinner, it’s always good to feel that you’re treading a path side by side the person you love.

“The Leg Lady”He was an outgoing, popular, lovable young man who wanted to get married and settle down. He was walking down the street one day in his neighborhood when he saw a young lady step inside a car. When she lifted her foot to get in the car, he got a glimpse of her lower legs, and decided right then and there that she was the one. He quickly asked his friend who this woman was, and went straight to her father to propose. Unfortunately, he was rejected and because of this rejection, he changed his

mind about getting married. But he never forgot that woman although he only saw her leg. Two years later, the young man heard that someone else had proposed to his “leg lady” and also was rejected, so he went to the woman’s father and tried again. The father said yes this time. The man and his leg lady have been happily married for 55 years, and are now surrounded by their beautiful children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. See what a lady’s leg can do?

KSa’S how i met Your mother Arafah Day

A woman and her daughter had just moved back to Saudi after living years abroad. On Arafah day during Hajj, the mother was wholeheartedly and loudly praying that her daughter would find her happily ever after and be able to settle in and get accustomed to life in KSA. As soon as she finished her sentence, a young man tapped on her shoulders and said, “Can I marry your daughter?” When they got back to Jeddah after Hajj, they met, and the rest is history.

The Boss and the ReporterHe was her boss and she reported to him. On her second day of work, the Reporter introduced herself to the Boss. Shortly after, they started talking and for the following three months, the Reporter continued to wear her niqab so he fell in love with her before he saw her face. They have been happily married ever since.

“La Vie En Rose”The bride and groom’s sisters work together. When the two employees discussed their siblings, they noticed plenty of similarities between the to-be bride and groom. The bride’s sister was telling the groom’s sister that her sister (the bride to-be) is the only one of them who absolutely loves listening to Edith Piaf, otherwise known as the voice of France, and the star who sings “La Vie En Rose.” The groom’s sister shockingly stated that her brother (the groom) loves this singer as well. That’s when those two employees began thinking like cupid. At first, both bride and groom were hesitant. Nine months later, they actually met, instantly clicked, and Shakespeare’s “The first time I saw you I felt in love and you smiled because you know,” was on their wedding cake topper.

The Way it was Done BeforeIn 1961, a teenage girl was in her room, when her father walked in and said “Congratulations sweetie, you just got engaged!” This couple has been happily married for 53 years now, and every year they celebrate their anniversary with more love for each other than the previous year.

“When I tapped the side of my wheelchair and told my husband, ‘you’re the only reason I want to be free from this contraption,’ he kissed me on my forehead and said, ‘honey, I don’t even see that thing.’ ”

“Exactly 10 years ago almost to the minute, I stopped at an intersection and a car rear ended me. The driver was a student at UF, just like me. He was cordial and apologetic. As we waited for the cops and the tow truck we chatted and started laughing together about all sorts of stuff. We exchanged numbers and the rest is history. We just celebrated our eighth wedding anniversary.”

“Exactly 20 years ago to the hour, I risked my life to save a woman who was drowning in the rapids of the Colorado River. And that’s how I met my wife – the love of my life.”

“Today, as I watched my 75-year-old grandmother and grandfather being silly with each other and laughing in the kitchen, I felt like I got a short glimpse of what true love feels like. I hope I find it someday.”

“On our 50th wedding anniversary, she smiled at me and said, ‘I only wish I had met you sooner.’ ˮ

The art scene in Saudi Arabia has been really picking up lately, and we’ve never been happier to note a change as we are now. But as fast as it’s growing, there’s still a large number of brilliant art makers that haven’t made it to mainstream media, and we’ve taken it upon ourselves to uncover some of the hidden gems and present them to the world! Or, well, Riyadh and Jeddah to begin with. Then we’re taking over the world. Muwahahahahaha!

It can be pretty disheartening to realize that your loved one already has the gift that you carefully and lovingly picked out, but then again it’s easy to give duplicate gifts when you purchase common items at local retail stores. Fortunately, you can get creative and give your loved ones gifts that they probably don’t already have and will not forget for a long time.

Keep reading if you’re looking for creative gift ideas!

By Mohammed Mirza

01 A PersonAlized Mug

Instead of giving a gift that will simply sit around and collect dust, you can give something useful by investing in a personalized mug. Keep in mind the interests of your loved one and make a mug that depicts those interests. You can have photos printed on the mug, a catchy line typed on it or you may just paint it yourself. Many gifts lose their appeal after a few weeks or wear out after a few months, but this isn’t the case with this personalized mug.

02edible ArrAngeMents

One gift that is becoming quite popular is the edible arrangement. You can send your loved an edible arrangement pack they can enjoy in more ways than one. Not only does it look great, but they can also savor the treats it's made of. There are endless possibilities with what can be placed in your edible arrangement. You can add chocolates, desserts, or even fruits if you’re looking for something a little healthier.

04All About Your bAsKet

Make notes of all the reasons you love your loved one, then buy small gifts to go with each note. For example, reason you love your spouse is for their passion for listening to a particular singer. You can add an audio CD of that singer and attach it to the note. Similarly, put all the notes and attached gifts altogether in a basket, this one is sure to prove your affection.05scrAPbooK

This is probably the best way to show some love. A scrapbook is not only something people can save forever, but also fun to share with others and can capture thoughts and memories that might have been otherwise forgotten. Get hold of all the different memories you have with your loved one such as photos, letters and all other sorts of memorabilia. Buy an empty book, stick them all in, personalize the cover and empty spaces with drawings, paintings and captions. You can be assured that this gift is bound to fill a special place in your loved one’s heart.

03Kit in A JAr

No matter what kind of interests your loved one has, you can arrange a personalized kit that’s in a jar. These can range from a survival kit, spa kit, travel kit, makeup kit, so no matter which kit you opt for just pack all the essentials related to it and place them in a jar. This will show the recipient that you really know them and care about their interests. You may also add a note on why you picked out the particular kit as a gift.

AMOU HAMZA:On an average day of trying to figure out what we would like to eat, Amo Hamza turns up as one of the first options when we want fish that’s affordable and filling. They have several locations around Riyadh, but we would suggest going to the big ones in King Abdullah and Makkah Road to really enjoy their menu. Their seafood arrives daily from the Eastern Province and so freshness is guaranteed. Our personal favorite is the grilled Denis fish paired with their special rice and if you’re really hungry, you can’t go wrong with their SR 90 buffet.

Location: Old Airport Road

NAFOURA:There are a lot of Nafoura branches but there’s two in particular that serve up really good seafood. Singleton Riyadhis should try the one in Malaz while families should dine in the Airport Road branch. The men would definitely enjoy the fish kabsa. It’s savory and a quick fix. Each restaurant has a nautical feel to it and is great for a casual weekend dinner. You have Lebanese, Asian and European cuisines, but what you shouldn’t miss is the Lobster Thermidor and prawns with garlic sauce – we’ve never been disappointed.

Location: Northern Ring Road

RED LOBSTER:It’s a bit of a drive from the city center but worth it if you’re out with the family or your friends and want something that’s different from your usual Middle-Eastern seafood place. An international franchise, it’s American casual dining all the way. They have upped their dishes since they opened last year and we can’t stop thinking about the chowder, even non-seafood lovers would like it. So far the biggest crustaceans and prawns we’ve had in Riyadh. The lobster lover’s dream is a dream come true, the grilled king prawns are indeed royalty and garlic butter biscuits are spot on as the ones they have elsewhere. Just a tip: The waiters will help you with your shellfish (crabs and lobsters can be hard to open, believe me, no shame in asking) and don’t forget to put on your apron.

Location: Oruba St. and Takhassussi Intersection

AL QALZAM:A sister branch of the famous Qalzam restaurant in Jeddah, they’re known to serve freshly caught fish, cooked to your liking. They offer a wide variety of seafood fried, grilled or baked in the oven. We had the tajeen, which was especially flavorful. The fried hamour was crusted with spicy seasoning although a bit dry. The highlight on their menu for us is the perfectly grilled jumbo shrimp that’s charred but juicy. The sides of tahini and sour humar (tamarind) sauce were great complements. One thing we didn’t enjoy much was the red sayadiya rice, it was unconventional and lacked the traditional fish spices. We would recommend doing a delivery or a takeout and it is quite pricey.

Did you know? Turkish coffee is a local afternoon and after meal drink in KSA. It’s always served with water so you can cleanse your palette first and enjoy its bold taste to the fullest. The sweetness of the Turkish coffee can either be sada (no sugar), orta (medium) or one teaspoon of sugar, or sekerli very sweet or two teaspoons of sugar.

The "winter" season may be drawing to a close in the next couple of weeks but we in Jeddah love our hot drinks all year long. For the sweet issue, we didn’t want to miss letting you in on one of favorite foodie affairs, the perfect marrying of local hot drinks with delectable treats.

Café Lattes and Cappuccino• Classic – Brioche or Croissant• Fruity – Berries and Apricot• Cheese – Soft and light

DR Recommends: The Cheese Plate at Paul is a perfect combination with espresso and cream based hot drinks and we love their croissant. It’s a wannabe Parisian’s one-stop shop.

Espresso Shots • Rich – Chocolate fudge cake, dark chocolate to complement, white to subdue the strong tones of Arabica beans.• Creamy – Cream brulee, New York cheese cake• Fruity – Berries, oranges, don’t go for a fruit that’s too sour, it can overpower your espresso or leave a not so nice after taste.

DR Recommends: Try out the new Cioccolatitaliani on Tahliya Street. They serve up a decadent array of pure espresso blends that simply marries with their authentic Italian dark, milk and white chocolate. It’s the ultimate Choco-coffee lover’s fantasy come true.

Did you know? Gahwa is a traditional sign of generosity and hospitality stemming from the Bedouin culture. As much as possible, you should accept the first cup and some traditional Saudi homes do practice the odd number rule, you either drink one, three, or five cups. Don’t expect your finjan (cup) to be filled to the brim since it’s considered impolite to do so.

• Earl Grey tea with milk and a bite of a raspberry scone• Red tea with mint is warm and refreshing along with super sweet Middle Eastern delights like Baglawa and Kunafa.• Aromatic Jasmine tea is light yet flavorful and enjoyed best with Digestive or Gingersnap cookies.• Chai Karak (karak tea) is spicy, creamy and ohh sooo sweet! DirectionsPreheat oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C).

Butter and lightly flour, four (15 x 5 cm) round cake pans.

In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt.

In the bowl of your electric mixer, beat the butter until soft and creamy (about 1-2 minutes).

Gradually add the sugar and beat until light and fluffy (about 3-5 minutes).

Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.

Add the vanilla extract and beat until combined.

With the mixer on low speed, alternately add the flour mixture (in three additions) and milk (in two additions), beginning and ending with the flour.

3. Place the cakes on a wire rack to cool, in their pans, for about 10 minutes. Then remove them from the pans and leave them to cool completely, another 10 minutes.

4. Now you can start constructing the cake. Start by cutting around the outer edge of each of the baked cakes around (1-2 cm). This

is needed to show the true colors of the cake.

5. Prepare the plate that you will be serving the cake in and put the white cake layer at the bottom and start frosting the top of the cake.

6. Place the second layer of the lightest shade of red (the one that has 1/8 teaspoon of red food coloring) and

then frost its top and so on until all layers has been constructed.

7. Now frost the entire cake using a rubber spatula from the sides and top and ensure to cover all areas for a clean smooth white frosting finish.

How To Get Your Sugar HighBy Reina Vidad TejanoOh sugar! Why do you make us so happy? Despite not being a healthy choice, sweet cravings are unforgiving and hard to resist. According to the World Health Organization, the recommended intake of sugar should only be within 50 grams per day. BUT, since this article is about getting your sugar high, you have been warned: Consuming the following treats is not advisable for the diabetics and already-hyper-3-year-olds to follow suit.

As for the sugar-hungry population, overdose on these super sweet items and for sure, you’ll be hopping around the clock for more.

KriSpy KrEmE DOuGHnuTSIf you just pop three Original Glazed in your mouth, you are already guaranteed to exceed your sugar intake for the day. But it’s just so good at melting in your mouth that you know you could finish a dozen. If you really want to overdo the sugar love, pair up the treat with one of their Kremey drinks like the Chocolate Chocolate or the Lotta Latte.

THE OrEO COOKiES BLizzArD FrOm DQ GriLL & CHiLLDairy Queen is popular for serving their creamy ice cream delights upside down, but you’re sure to be all over the place once you’ve finished every scoop of this cold treat. There are 113 grams of sugar in one Blizzard! If that doesn’t give you a sugar high, I don’t know what will. Also try their Pecan Mudslide or Peanut Butter Parfait for an even sweeter twist.

It’s after Isha prayer and the blinking lights of the city are bright in Thalateen Street as I stand on the sidewalk admiring the soaring image of the Al Faisaliah tower close by. It’s one of the places in Riyadh where it’s conducive for a stroll and you can somehow appreciate the peace and quiet of the metropolis. Though what especially makes this place a sweet escape is the array of chocolate stores that stand side by side, therefore promping me to dub it the “Chocolate Street of Riyadh.ˮ

The strip is home to the old and new with the most well-known chocolate shops in Saudi Arabia taking root even as early as the ’90s along with other new brands that are up and coming. Read on as I take on some of the standouts from my recent walk along Chocolate Street.

By Reina Vidad Tejano

LenotreEven before the popularity of Café Lenotre in different parts of the city, there stood the first Lenotre shop on Thalateen. Originally a bakery and pastry shop in the ’90s here in Riyadh, it now features more of its special chocolate collections for various occasions. They call their chefs “the chocolate craftsmen” producing only the finest of chocolates following the standards of their Paris house. Let’s face it, the French know how to do their chocolates right: exquisite and expensive. Lenotre is a popular choice for locals and expats alike who have a taste for the luxurious.

BateelYou’d miss it if you don’t know where it was on Thalateen having been sandwiched in between two stores of Saadedin Pastry. But in that nook sits the oldest branch of Bateel ever established in Riyadh. They have the Origin line, which features artisan chocolates made from cocoa beans of Peru and Venezuela; the Blend Chocolates, which are primarily from Belgium; sugar-free selection for those who are avoiding high sugar levels but still wants a piece of chocolate; their famous Date Chocolates, which are made with their premium dates and succulent fillings; and then they also have their individually wrapped chocolates and specialty chocolates as per season. Long-standing customers still frequent this branch for their Bateel fix.

patchiThe name Patchi may very well be the most recognized name in the chocolate industry in the Middle East. Every store is a chocolate heaven and the one in Thalateen Street is no exception. These high-class chocolates are an all-around favorite and are considered perfect gifts for weddings and other celebrations. They boast of almost 50 types of premium chocolates to choose from that can come in ready-to-go gift boxes. They also feature the unique, Dragees, which are chocolate covered treats pretty much like M&Ms, only finer. Their Patchi Baby selection and Patchino & Kids line are also famous among loyal customers.

Chocolate GraphicsNow here is a totally unique venture on chocolates! You can have any image or text you want embossed on a chocolate. How great is that? Whether it’s your company’s logo or a Thank You message, Chocolate Graphics can do it. As of now they have three chocolate flavors that you can choose from: milk chocolate, white chocolate and dark chocolate. They also offer fancy boxes ad wrapping for your chocolates and they make for a great token or personalized giveaway at parties or events.

If you have enough time on your hands, then you can do what I did and take a walk from one end to the other to check out all these establishments. For sure, your pockets will be filled with handed out free chocolates. And what is life, if not a box (or handful) of chocolates?

By Mohammed Mirza

Stunning landscape, incredible weather, utopianvillage up in the mountains, the village of Dhee Aynoffers it all.

Dhee Ayn, also knownas the Marble Village, isa 400-year-old historictownship in the Al Bahaprovince of Saudi Arabia, built on top of a mountaindistinguished for itsnumerous white stones. Atjust over 400 kilometersfrom Jeddah, the charmingvillage of Dhee Ayn is alsofamous for its puremountain water, uniquesettlements, rare bananasand aromatic flowers.

Surprisingly, we didn’tplan to visit the place. Wejust happened to cross it onour way to Abha. We weredriving on one of the mostbeautiful highways I haveever been on. It cuts through

the Sarawat Mountain rangeand connects Taif to Abha. After crossing the city of AlBaha on the highway, wetook a turn towards the KingFahd Road, which took usfrom the unruffled Sarawathighlands to the scalding AlTihama coastal flats.

Far away we saw a groupof old buildings sittingatop a white hill. The placewas visible for severalkilometers as we approachedthe village. Even from adistance the place can easilybe located by the white glowimpending from it.

Initially we thought it wasjust one of the manyvillages that we happenedto cross by. We were soonproven wrong. As wewere going closely past it,the dark somber coloredbuildingsat a distance werebecoming clearer.

I realized that this was notjust any other village butthe historic village of DheeAyn. It was a memorablesight, historic houses amidst beautiful mountains; itlooked like the structures ofDhee Ayn were caressingthe sky. At about 24 kilometerssouthwest of Al Baha, thevillage of Dhee Ayn is nearthe terminus of the mainescarpment road. Severalimpressive historical stoneand slate structures dot thisroad that leads to the village.

The village looks perched, seemingly defying gravityby levitating atop a lucidcloud. The admirable stonesettlement is set on a whitemarble stump in the middleof a palm circumscribedpocket canyon. Thesurroundings of the villageare lush green from theample rainfall the place gets.

DESTINATION RIYADH 61

Page 64: Dr Issue 12

The houses of the village itself are not made of marble, but of flake stones and slate. Instead, the village got the moniker "Marble Village" for the rocky outcrop it is built upon. The outcrop is a luminous rocky hill of white marble, which stands in sharp disparity to the grayish dark slates with which the houses were constructed. The gray mountains that loom behind the outcrop and the green fields in the forefront add to shining marble that the village calmly rests on.

The village was supposedly inhabited over 400 years ago; many structures still survive to this very day. In its heyday the place was a major gold mining site and was renowned for its high quality craft products.

The village also witnessed several battles that occurred between local tribesmen and the invading Ottoman forces. It was eventually abandoned around 30 to 40 years ago, which makes the village even more transfixing.

We were allowed to drive right up and climb its ramparts and explore the mysterious rooms within its numerous houses and buildings. The settlement is abandoned and it was appalling to see that the village is unguarded and tourists are allowed almost everywhere, including those structures that are on the verge of collapse!

We had to be careful when wandering around, as many of

the structures are in a serious state of decay. Some of the weaker structures have already caved in the ground, while others have walls leaning at precarious angles under the weight of natural forces over a long period of time. We were really eager to see the village at sunset because we heard that the marble beneath it tends to glow even more during that time. But we were unable to since we had many more places to explore on our itinerary in a short span of time. Moreover, we were not able to spot any banana plantations nor the mountain springs that village was well known for.During our visit we were spellbound

by the attractive scenery of the village, a great interweaving of the colors of nature and history all in one place. It was a great experience to enter the historic structures and observe their minutiae. We were a bit disappointed by the village’s present condition, but things are bound to ameliorate by the growing attention being amassed by the village.

C h a R i t Y F o u n D a t i o nAL wEDAD It is a well-known fact that “a society’s advancement can be judged by how it treats its weak: the elderly, the disabled and the orphans.” In its care for orphans of unknown parentage, Al-Wedad Charity Foundation is doing its part to advance Saudi society.

Their work is fulfilling, in essence,

“THOsE WHO WIsH fOR THEIR HEaRTs TO sOfTEN sHOulD TakE caRE Of ORpHaNs.” -The saying of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

AL wEDAD cARING From infancy to 3 years old, the children at Al Wedad are cared for until they can be taken in by families through breastfeeding by the mother (whose milk can be medically induced, if not natural). From the professional, dedicated care of the Al Wedad staff, they emerge fully prepared for a better life.

THEIR HEALTH To care properly for the children, Al Wedad does not merely depend on common knowledge of its temporary foster mothers, but utilizes the special knowledge of experts. Pediatric doctors volunteered to fill out exact directions that foster mothers must comply to rigidly: schedules for the children’s feeding times, what to be done in cases of illness, and even the correct time to go out in the sun.

THEIR EMOTIONS The staff at Al Wedad understands the importance of caring emotionally for the children, in order to impart to them their own complete emotional development. Every child is monitored carefully to be sure that he or she is reaching all physical, mental and emotional development goals.

Because al wedad only houses children up until 3 years old, their

focus is to be the best place possible for a transition period for the child.

THEIR ENVIRONMENT A time to prepare them to be taken in by a foster family who will bring them up as their own. Nearly all the children have already been assigned families, and are only waiting for the paperwork to be completed. But there are new children coming steadily who must be accommodated.

GROwING uP wITH LOVE AND cARE It is a misconception that unknown parentage necessarily means illegitimate, while oftentimes children have been reluctantly given up by parents who have fallen on hard financial times and can no longer support them. Remembering that any one of us could be in their situation – after all, no one chooses what family they are born into – helps to remind us that these orphans are like our own children, and we have a responsibility and duty towards them. In fact, if we do not – if we ignore the problem, which is a rising phenomenon in Saudi society – they represent a ticking time bomb: children who have not grown up with love or care, and will hit back with pent-up frustration, anger and desperation at the very society that once rejected them.

THEIR FuTuRE These children are being prepared for a bright future with foster parents who will take them in and care for them as their own. They are eager to welcome these innocent, adorable children into their lives, and can’t wait to give them the opportunity at a life they may otherwise never have had.

thanks to al wedad’s sponsors and donors, this foundation

can continue its work.

Posture and Yoga can change your life. how?

It is quite amazing how by just slightly adjusting the way we sit or stand our body is more relaxed and open. The delicate structure of our muscles and bones greatly influence the oxygen flow throughout our body. We unknowingly strain and stiffen

our muscles by sitting in our school and office chairs for long hours. Practicing yoga and repairing our posture reverses some of the damage, and isn’t difficult to

incorporate to our everyday lives.

How can anything sweet be healthy, you’re saying? Well, fitness in itself is sweet, and even sweeter when you do it as a group or with a partner. So let’s highlight the benefits of group exercise and exercising with a partner and some ideas on how you can workout with that loved one…. SWEET!

By Jill Calvert

GETTING FiT TOGETHER

People naturally think: an instructor with a microphone, loud music, masses of people in a studio moving in all directions, some doing it wrong, right, and some, well, not quite sure! You would be right; this is a “group or studio class.” I myself teach them and love doing so. I think they are great, fun, energetic and help get people moving. They can add variety to your workouts, great for cross training and can help eliminate boredom and give you a little extra push.

the sweet benefits of working out with a partner or in groups.

wHAT IS GROuP TRAINING?

This type of exercise has been around for quite a while and there have been some great developments over the years. To name one, the Les Mills Programs. However, over the past few years I have seen another area develop; small group training, which can be anything from two to six people! My observations are based on my own experiences, fellow workers and clientele. I can also happily report that the results were better than traditional exercise classes alone.

i was once told by a group of clients that they felt more committed to small

group training rather than a one-on-one. they felt that if they

canceled due to a lazy spell, they would let the

team down.

Share the cost. normally small group

training costs less than a one on one. So it’s a

win-win situation.

although it is a group session, the instructor

is able to focus on form and technique,

as there are fewer members than in a normal studio class.

there is better communication

between trainer and client.

More communication = More education =

Better results

wHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF SMALL GROuP TRAINING OR TRAINING wITH yOuR BELOVED PARTNER?

Groups are usually made up of like-

minded people and friends who want to exercise and get fit.

You will develop friends adding to the social

side of your total wellbeing.

there is an element of friendly competition

in the group, and you may find that you put

more effort in!

More effort = More results.

So now that you know the benefits, all that’s

left to do is grab some friends, family and loved ones and get moving!it’s fun and social, you really can laugh, enjoy

and get fit.
