Electronic overload relays

E1 Plus comprehensive motor

Allen-Bradley have introduced their new E1 Plus, second generation electronic overload protection relays. The new E1 Plus overloads incorporate a greater use of sophisticated electronic control and monitoring. With recent advances in micro electronic technology and the introduction of the ASIC chip set, it has become possible to improve on and add new features to the popular E1 Plus range. The E1 Plus second generation overload now incorporates greater accuracy and versatility whilst providing increased overall protection.

The new E1 Plus incorporates the following improved features:

• A wider settable current range (5:1)

• Adjustable class trip settings (10, 15, 20 and 30) (EE version)

• Field installable side mount modules (EE version)

• An extremely low power consumption

• Robust mounting to contactor.

Range Overview193-ED1 basic model

The 193-ED1 is the standard or base model version. The ED1 model is available in the current range of 0.1 - 45 A, incorporates a fixed trip class of 10, and is suited to 3 phase operation. A manual reset function, visible trip indicator and test / reset button are also included.

193-EE enhanced model

The enhanced 193-EE variant covers an operating range of 0.1 - 800 A with adjustable trip class settings of 10, 15, 20 and 30 (via dip switch selection). The EE model can be further enhanced by the addition of side mounted plug-in modules.

193-E_P pass through model

For current ranges 1 - 27 A a version is available that mounts separate from the contactor. The motor wires pass through CT openings.

Superior Phase Failure ProtectionOnboard electronics constantly monitors all motor phases. If the ASIC chip set senses that one or more of the phases is missing during a steady state operation of a fully loaded motor, it will trip in 3 seconds. If a single phase condition is present during starting, the E1 Plus will trip within 8 seconds (for a motor loading of > 80 %). These trip times are significantly faster then conventional bimetal overloads. In addition, the E1 Plus relay detects a 50 % phase imbalance in the same way as a phase loss.

Rated Up To 1000 VACComplies to IEC-60997 for nominal operation voltage of 1000 volts.

The pass through version of the E1 Plus permits separate mount of the overload relay.

Motor load side cables simply pass through a window in the overload relay body. The internal current transformers monitor the current flow.

193-E_P pass through electronic overload relays The 193-E_P versions provide additional application flexibility and are designed to be mounted separately from the contactor. The motor wires are simply passed through the CT openings in the device and straight to the contactor which reduces the number of connection points. This makes them ideal in retrofit applications and when used with contactors other than 100-C or where space is restricted. The P version can be fitted directly onto DIN rail to speed up assembly. The EE_P version can also accept any of the side mount accessories including the communication modules; DevicenetTM, Profibus® or Ethernet / IP.

11

Ground fault current is sensed by passing all lines carrying current to and from a motor through the window of a special core balance current transformer often called a toroid / ground fault sensor. If all the current to the motor returns through the lines in the toroid, no significant current will be induced in the toroid secondary. If, however, ground fault current returns via a path external to the toroid, such as via the conduit walls, a current will be induced in the toroid secondary. This current will be sensed and amplified by solid state circuits. If the ground fault current is larger than the selected ground fault trip level of the overload relay, the overload relay will trip.

A unique circuit within the E1 Plus protection modules monitors for motor

starting inrush current. The circuit inhibits the protection feature during the motor start period and arms the protection function after the inrush current falls to motor rated current. This allows the motor to start and run, avoiding nuisance tripping during the inrush period.

NOTE: 1) The delay between the occurrence of a PTC out-of-range fault and a trip of the E1 Plus varies, but is generally described by one of the following: • 500 ms ± 250 ms, typical; - < 6 seconds, for a PTC out-of-range fault present at power-up of the side mount module. - Under no conditions should a PTC trip take longer than 6 seconds.

E1 Plus overload RELAY WITH 193-EGF or 193-EGJ (193-EE)

193-CBCT Core balance transformers

Control Wiring Installation193-CBCT ground fault trip data

• The control wiring must be a twisted pair

• Lines in excess of one metre long must be a shielded pair with the shield connected to ground at only one point

Important: The shield, if present, of the twisted pair must be connected to earth ground at the sensor, with no connection made at the overload relay

• Maximum length is 30 metres for the shielded cable

• Sensor fastener torque 2.94 - 3.39 Nm

• 193-CBCT lead wires should be twisted before termination by applying one twist per inch

Attention: the ground fault protection system is intended for equipment use only. This system is not a ground fault circuit interrupter for personnel protection.

Ground fault trip delay

The delay between the occurrence of a ground fault and a trip of the E1 Plus varies, but is generally described by one of the following:

< 6 seconds, for a ground fault present at power up of the side mount module

< 30 seconds, if the protection inhibit has not been cleared. Under no conditions should a ground fault trip take longer than 31 seconds

23

E1 Plus Overload Relay with 193-EGF or 193-EGJ (193-EE)

Power Cable Installation

1 All power cables, including the neutral when used, must pass through the sensor window. The equipment ground conductor (the conductor used to carry the non-current carrying metal parts of equipment) must not pass through the sensor window.

2 The power cables, going through the sensor window, must be straight, tightly bundled, centred in the window, and perpendicular to the sensor for a length equal to or greater than six times the cable bundle diameter (including insulation) from the sensor (see Figure 1).

3 All other conductors with available fault currents in excess of 1,000 A should be placed a distance equal to or greater than six times the cable bundle diameter (including insulation) from the sensor (see Figure 2).

4 The power cables of the branch circuit, to be protected by the overload relay, must not be grounded on the load side of the ground fault sensor.

5 If the power cables are enclosed in a conducting jacket, the jacket must be grounded on the line side of the sensor. The jacket must not pass through the sensor window, but must be cut at the window and joined with a conductor that passes outside the sensor window.

6 The power system must be solidly grounded or grounded through an impedance at the source, as long as the impedance allows for a magnitude of current to flow that is within the operational range of the overload relay.

Attention: To prevent electrical shock, disconnect from power source before installing or servicing. Install in a suitable enclosure, keep free from contaminants.

Do not apply power to a system with power cables going through the sensor unless the sensor is connected to the overload relay. Operation without a low impedence connection to the secondary windings may result in damage to the sensor.

Page 24: E1 Plus Electronic Motor Protection Relays - NHP · PDF fileE1 Plus Electronic Motor Protection Relays Motor protection with leading edge technology, expandable protection ... 193-EPT

24

Locating phase conductors in the sensor window

• Firmly secure the conductors in the centre of the sensor window so that they cannot be moved accidentally or under fault conditions

• Maintain as large a distance as possible between the bundled conductors and the wall of the sensor window

• For applications having one cable per phase, arrange the conductors per Figure A

• For applications having two cables per phase, arrange the conductors per Figure B. A spacer, having the same diameter as the conductors being used, should be used to separate the phase conductors

Attention: The ground fault protection system is intended for equipment use only. This system is not a ground fault circuit interrupter for personnel protection.

An ideal core-balanced ground fault toroid responds only to the sum of the currents flowing through the sensor window, however, an actual core balanced transformer may saturate if the phase currents are too large. This results in ground fault sensor output even if the sum of the phase currents is zero. Saturation can be minimised by choosing a ground fault sensor with adequate core size and symmetrically locating the phase conductors in the centre of the sensor window as shown above.
