Dubai WoodShow 2017, in association with the International Technical Tropical Timber Association (ATIBT), will
organize the Timber Legality & Climate Change Forum in Dubai from March 4-6, 2017.
The conferencewill be held under the patronage of UAE Ministry of Climate Change & Environment and will discuss the potential of forests, share new technologies and renewable products, exhibit solutions in the timber industry, and call on governments, civil society, and the private sector to promote investment in forests.
Through a memorandum signed with Dubai WoodShow, ATIBT will set up headquarters in Dubai to oversee preparations for the event until its commencement in 2017. Over the last 25 years, ATIBT has been organizing a forum for every two years either in a developing country or an importing country with the aim of promoting the sustainable, ethical and legal trade of tropical timber as a natural and renewable resource.
Dawood Al Shezawi, Chairman, Strategic Marketing & Exhibitions, organizers of Dubai WoodShow says: “Sustainability is the future of this industry. The ATIBT Conference is key for discussing initiatives, which will help the socio-economic development
of timber producing countries. As the Middle East’s leading platform for wood and woodworking machinery, DWS takes pride in hosting this forum, which will be a milestone for the wood industry in the region.”
In recent years, ATIBThas become a key partner for various timber stakeholders as well as European governmental institutions, playing a crucial role in the implementation of international programs.
Al Shezawi added: “We anticipate that the inaugural edition of the conference will attract participation from prominent countries and decision makers in the internal wood industry.”
ATIBT was founded in 1951,prompted by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Weinig InTech 2016: Paving the way for the future with W4.0 Digital
The Weinig Group can look
back on another successful
InTech, the company’s
traditional in - house
trade fair. Around 1,000
customers from 32 countries accepted
the invitation to Tauberbischofsheim to
gather information and gain inspiration
for new investments. Weinig presented
its complete range covering the
entire value chain in solid wood
processing over more than 4,000 m2
and underlined its leading position in
Industry 4.0, a key issue for the future,
with W4.0 Digital technologies. A total
of 30 machines and systems were sold
across the group. The order volume
Machine monitoring and predictive
maintenance are further key issues
covered by Weinig, particularly via its
innovative “Service app”. In addition,
in “Millvision”, Weinig provides a high-
performance solution for furniture
production. Group company Holz-
Her offers an attractive concept in
the cutting of panels with the “smart
workshop”. All of these systems
target “maximum transparency of
processes”, as Chief Sales Officer
Gregor Baumbusch explained. The
most important thing, he stressed, is
to “achieve improvements in terms of
costs, availability and resources for
customers while keeping operation as
was significantly higher than the
previous InTech in 2014. At the press
conference on the eve of the in-house
trade fair, CEO Wolfgang Pöschl also
reported on the pleasing growth of the
Weinig Group.
The mix of live demonstrations and
practical information so popular with
our customers once again shaped the
agenda at the 22nd InTech. A central
theme was digitization of production,
for which Weinig has devel-oped an
extensive portfolio of solutions. These
range from “System Plus” for planing
and profiling and “OptiPal” for cutting
to “Fencon” and “master computer
technology” for window production.

simple as possible.” The
requirements placed on businesses
by Industry 4.0 were illustrated by
Prof. Dr. Hube in his accompanying
presentation, which drew an interested
crowd on every day of the in-house
trade fair. “Data is the fuel of the 21st
century,” stated the economist. He
believes this development applies not
only to components of production
technology but to all processes in the
compa-ny. In the first instance, he
recommended a careful review of the
com-pany’s readiness for the major
challenge before commencing with the
first pilot projects.
Besides the central theme of
“digitization of production”, the
Product Unit Planing and Profiling
was in particular demand from visitors
to InTech 2016. A number of orders
were taken for the Powermat 2400
moulder among other models. The
Weinig “Classic Shop” with its wide
range of pre-owned machines was
also able to secure a gratifying order
tally. The presentations from Weinig
Concept, currently enjoying great
success in the market with complete
system solutions, also drew significant
atten-tion. The numerous innovations
at InTech included the OptiCut S60
wflex+ cutting system for fully-
automated length and width cutting
in a single work stage, the enhanced
ProfiPress T Next Generation gluing
press and four-sided contour milling.
The innovation sees Weinig transfer a
typical processing center application to
a profiling machine. Visitors were also
able to witness complete customer
systems in action including, for the
first time, furniture production on the
Conturex system. Dem-onstration of
complex installations will be made
possible by the integra-tion of the
assembly halls into the exhibition
space. “A great opportunity for
InTech,” underlined Wolfgang Pöschl.
On the eve of InTech, the CEO
joined Chief Sales Officer Gregor
Baum-busch, Chief Financial Officer
Gerald Schmidt and the product unit
directors to answer questions from
30 members of the trade press. One
recurring theme was the company’s
financial figures. Accordingly, the
group expects to achieve a turnover
of €380m for the current year. This
represents an increase of 6% year on
year for the world market leader in
machines and systems for solid wood
and panel processing. “On the whole
pleasing growth, which we currently
expect to continue next year,” said
Wolfgang Pöschl in closing.

GreCon Density Profile Measuring System STENOGRAPH now even more efficient and easier to maintain
Last week GreCon had introduced the new raw
density profile measuring system STENOGRAPH at
the IWF 2016 fair in Atlanta (USA). The new GreCon
STENOGRAPH can reliably measure the raw density
profile of MDF panels inline from a thickness of 6 mm
up to a thickness of 42 mm. Thanks to an improved software and
a construction that is even easier to maintain, the STENOGRAPH
that is already established in numerous wood based panel plants
is now even more efficient and robust.
The control unit can be installed at a distance from the
production line. A user-friendly touch panel facilitates the
operation of the system. The visualisation of measured data was
adapted to the layout that is typical of GreCon systems which
makes understanding and interpretation much easier.
The STENOGRAPH is working in a non-contact way and is
usually installed at the press outlet where it measures the raw
density profile in only a few seconds. A focused X-ray penetrates
the moving endless panel at an angle of 45° and is measured in
two positions: a stationary detector determines the transmitted
radiation intensity, a moving detector measures the scattered
radiation. The density-dependent values are combined in such
a way that a density value can be allocated to each point of the
panel cross section.
The raw density profile is one of the central material
characteristics of wood based panels. The STENOGRAPH
provides important information for the specific influence of the
characteristics of wood based panels by reliably measuring the
raw density profile.

EGGER Building Products cross the continent
Between August 2015 and November 2016, the EGGER Truck was once again on the road through Europe. More than 4,200 visitors in 19 countries were shown product and services innovations on 96 events days.
The EGGER Truck has been on the road for the wood-based materials manufacturer since 2011. Over the past year, the 33 tonne EGGER showroom-on-wheels has housed building products and corresponding services. “The EGGER Truck allows us necessary and important mobility for our customer care. We visited more than 90 events and were able to provide solid advice regarding EGGER’s products for wood construction, its services, and innovations”, says Carsten Ritterbach, Head of Marketing and Sales EGGER Building Products. The mobile showroom crossed a total of 19 European countries: from Sweden via Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, to Ukraine and Turkey. The product presentations for retailers, partners and colleges in the EGGER Truck went smoothly, but the same could not always be said for the 41,800km trip.
The EGGER Truck visited a total of 96 events, where the showroom presented the diverse range of EGGER Building Products with OSB, DHF, and timber. Included on the truck was the EGGER product wall with the entire portfolio and the illustrative environmental cycle. The wood-based materials manufacturer included the EGGER Ergo Board. This versatile
and ergonomic construction board, developed especially for drywall constructions and interiors, expands the range of building products. Thanks to its low weight of 11 kilograms, mounting is easy and fast. Due to its high structural strength and the formaldehyde-free resin, the EGGER Ergo Board is a great wood-based material for interior applications.
The wood-based materials manufacturer also included a new outdoor product: EGGER Thermodecking - a thermo-treated decking board made of sdomestic pine. No chemicals are used for the treatment, just heat, steam, and water. This significantly diminishes vulnerability to insects and fungi, and the life cycle of the boards reaches 15 to 25 years.
The information on offer in the EGGER Truck was complemented with the services from the EGGER Building Products segment. The Planning Handbook contains all important information regarding the planning and use of products as well as the revised Construction Catalogue. The “EGGER Construction Catalogue” app underwent an update and now offers users even more advantages. The app, which is now available in German, English, Italian, Czech, Hungarian, Romanian and Russian, includes all the configurations and construction details from the EGGER Construction Catalogue as 3D renderings. There is also additional information for fire protection and sound and heat insulation.
The EGGER Truck has covered more than 41,000 kilometres on the road through Europe.

Making of Modular Furniture on Small Scale A practical Guide for Small Scale Furniture Manufacturer and Interior Designers
When it comes to produce modular furniture for a medium size project then the main worry is the quality, sturdiness and the delivery schedule. Most of the Interior design firms are making Modular furniture as per customer designs and they are always in lookout how they can produce it faster with assured quality. They want to have a setup that can meet their requirements. Few of them also need to make the furniture on larger scale as their projects are of larger area spreading on few thousand sq. meters. Hence I have decided to write a series of articles for each of the segments depending on quantity and flexibility. This article will cover making of “Modular Furniture on Small scale”. I will strive to present these articles, which should serve as a practical guide to small, medium and Industrial scale manufacturers.
machines and excellent factory setup.
Ultimately this ends up in to financial
crises. The main reason for this situation
is the attitude towards quality control
and wrong selection of equipment.
The machines are of good quality but
the reasons for this situation are as
mentioned below.
• Wrong selection of machinery
• Balancing of operations.
• Poor maintenance of tooling.
• Lack of precision
• Selection of hardware.
In this article we will consider Making
It is observed that many manufacturers of Modular furniture have set up units with
high-tech machinery available in the market with varying investment budgets. There
are many manufacturers of Modular Furniture and there is a huge competition in the
market in this sector. Unfortunately today many of them are facing the problems of
quality, productivity and uniformity. This is happening in spite of having very good

of Modular Furniture on Small Scale for medium batch production. This setup will
need an investment that can range from Half a million to 1 million US$ depending
upon the source of the equipment you choose. In the market machines are available
from Hobby grade to professional to industrial grade. The hobby grade machines /
equipment, if used for longer working hours with heavy load conditions, will lose their
accuracy. Hence we see many users having a couple of burned equipment in their
factory. Hobby equipment are cheaper but if they are used for Industrial application
than that will end up in to work stoppage. For this reason selection of Industrial scale
equipment is suggested for uninterrupted production.
The main operations in making of modular furniture are namely
• Panel cutting,
• Edge banding
• Boring.
We will consider the Basic Industrial Grade Machines required for Small
Scale Furniture Manufacturing.
Panel Cutting
Important criteria’s while selecting the Panel Saw: Panel cutting is done using a panel saw or Beam saw depending up on the no of
sheets to be cut per shift. For a capacity of 30 to 50 sheets sizing per shift, a good
quality-sliding panel saw is fine. One should check that the slides and the sliding
mechanism should be precise and with auto cleaning mechanism. Ball contacts or
roller contacts are suitable for this. We should understand that the slide should be very
precisely machined all along the length of 2.5 / 3 meters. Also the material used in the
slides should be mechanically stable without any movement or deflection in course of
usage. Many times it is seen that the machine works fine when new, but within few
Saw carriage Angular contact
Saw carriage Point contact
The second important point is the
scoring blade and it’s positioning. There
are few types of adjustable scoring
blades available in the market. One
consists of two blades with adjustable
shims to select the thickness of the
scoring grove to match the mail blade
cutting. The second is V grove type; in
this we adjust the width of the cut by
adjusting the depth of the cut. The third
is wobbling cutter block. In this we can
adjust the degree of wobble to mach the

months problems start like chipping and
uneven cutting of panels etc.

Adjustable Scoring blade
Trapezoidal Scoring blade
When the production capacity is
between 50 sheets to 250 sheets per
shift then a Beam Saw is suitable. For
higher production an in line Beam saw
machine is suggested. In this case two
beam saws are placed in line. The first
machine (wider in width) prepares bars of
required width and the second (smaller in
width) cuts the bars in to required length
making it inline production without any
stoppage.
Important points while
using the Panel Saw
Machine effectively:
The sharpening of the main and
scoring blade is also very important.
Many factories have told me that the
cutting is very good when the saw blade
is new but it is not the same when re-
sharpened. This indicates that the
sharpening is not proper. One should inspect the vendor doing this job of sharpening
and the accuracy of his machine and facilities at his workshop. If the blades are
sharpened in house then one should get the machine checked for accurate working.
It is often seen that the carbide tip’s thickness becomes uneven once the blade is re-
sharpened. The height of the blade also changes from tip to tip. This indicates that the
dividing head of the sharpening machine is not set properly or has some problem. In
case of varying height of tips only few carbide tips are cutting and rest are just moving
without cutting. Hence the load is transferred on few tips resulting in poor finish and
bad cut. Same situation also arises in case of main blade re-sharpening.
Many times it is seen that the saw blade is protruding too much causing wobbling
and burnt marks on panel / wood. To avoid this one should see that only tips of the saw
are protruding out of the panel and should set the blade height accordingly.
Last but not the least; the board should be pressed firmly against the machine bed
near the cutting area. This will result in to a smooth cut.
Edge banding
Various types of Edge banding
Important criteria’s while selecting the Machinery:
Edge banding is the second important process in panel Furniture manufacturing.
This is very crucial as it value addition process in the furniture making. It makes the
furniture of high quality or poor quality. Poor quality edge banding makes the furniture
look cheap ending in to price bargains and losses.
Any good edge-banding machine is fine to produce fine quality product. One should
check the following points while selecting the machine. First and foremost is the quality
of the feeding track, it should transport the work piece smoothly till end of the track
without any vibrations and movement.

Carriage of edge banding Machine The second factor is the side pressure on the edge that guarantees the thin, uniform
glue line. If this is not good then we will get thick glue line that looks very bad resulting
in a cheap finish.
Side pressure rollers for thin edges
Side pressure rollers for thick edges
The other important factors are
Glue and its temperature. Mostly
good quality imported hot melt
glues are used. One should set the
pot temperature as per specification
of the glue. Any deviation from this
should be avoided.
End cutting is the next
important operations of the edge-
banding machine. The position of
the cut is set with reference to the
edge of the board. This should have
precise adjustment knobs to fine-
tune the end cutting.
Top bottom trimmerTop – bottom trimming is done with
the help of trimmers with copying / tracing wheels that positions the trimmers on the edges. Slight mistake at this stage results in to over trimming or under trimming resulting in to poor finish at the edges. Many times fine dust is sticking on copying wheel resulting in to uneven trimming. Hence periodic cleaning of the copying wheel is necessary.
If one takes care of the points mentioned above then there is no reason why our quality should be inferior to European Furniture.
We can select various options like end rounding, fine trimming, buffing, cleaning, automatic glue feeder, heater at feeding position (pre heat the edge of the board in winter), return conveyer etc. Laser machines are becoming popular because of invisible glue line. Add on laser fittings are also available to upgrade old machines.
Important points while using the Machinery effectively:
Many times we see thicker glue lines or dark glue lines they are due to viscosity of the glue and burnt glue. These are manmade mistakes and can be avoided.
But unfortunately we do not see the same quality of edge banding that we see with Italian or German furniture. This indicates that there is a mistake somewhere. Many times the temperature selected is not correct and due to this glue cannot offer the quality it should.
One should check the sharpness of the saw blades periodically to assure fine cut of the edge band. One should fine-tune the blade position for accurate flush cutting of the edges.

Multi Head Boring machine Single Head Boring machine Important criteria’s while selecting the Machinery:
Boring machineis last and very important operation as the mechanical stability of the furniture is directly depending on the accuracy of the drilling of the holes that accommodate the hardware and fittings of the furniture. One should understand that these machines are called boring machines and not drilling machines. The reason is that very accurate and precise drilling is called boring. Hence Precision is very important in these machines.
CNC Boring Machine CNC Boring Head with multi drills
Boring Machine
One has many options from simple Vertical-horizontal boring machine to Multi head and CNC Boring machines. The accuracy of the boring head is very important in the selection of the machine. Any mistake or compromise in selection of machines will result in to poor product ending up in to rejections and losses.
The machine is provided with guide to drill mirror holes on the opposite side panels to ease the operation. An easy guide is also provided to set the both side fences accurately, this is very important.
The engineering of the machine should be very good and sturdy to assure good results for long time.
Important points while using the Machinery effectively: Most important aspect is the accurate positioning of the work piece. This should be
done with utmost care. Single head machine is fine for smaller batch production. Multi

head machine is suitable for larger batch
production. CNC machine is suitable for
flexible working, but it needs proper care
and maintenance.
The drills should be re-sharpened
from time to time to get good holes.
I have seen two - three years old CNC
machines in very poor condition due to
use of blunt tooling, cheap panel boards,
poor maintenance.
One should check in to the above
points and plan to produce a product of
International Quality and finish. I have
noticed that if manufacturers are using
good machines, good raw material,
good hardware then there should not be
any problem in producing International
Quality and Finish product. What They
need is the attitude and determination
that’s all.

The visitors showed great interest in the new panels and
surfaces’ technologies, given that the market of panels is
starting to gain not only ground but also the interest of the
Egyptian consumers. The support of the Chamber of Damietta,
of the governor and of the government, in general, was crucial
in resolving technical problems, while equally important was
the contribution of all members of the Wood and Furniture
Association, who perceived the event as an opportunity to
modernize and improve the production. The investment that is
currently being made for the creation of the Damietta Furniture
City that involves the construction of 2000 furniture plants,
creates expectations for a better future.
The next appointment in Damietta has been set for 2017 and
will be far greater in volume, of better quality and very promising
for exhibitors and visitors alike. Already, many of the exhibitors
who took part in this year’s Woodtech Forum have signed up for
2017 and many more who visited the forum have said that their
participation in the next Wood Tech Forum is a given!

INTERZUM 2017 Provides Momentum for Designers and Architects
From 16 to 19 May 2017, the next interzum event will present a wide variety of innovations for interior design and furniture manufacturing. As the world’s
largest industry event in these fields, the
fair provides a comprehensive overview
of new technologies and design.
With over 1,500 exhibitors from more
than 60 countries presenting their
innovations, interzum is the industry’s
largest event worldwide. More than
65 % of visitors and exhibitors come
from abroad, making interzum the
most international industry fair. At its
2017 edition, alongside the industry’s

innovative companies will again also be
participating. International exhibitors
www.interzum.com, visitors can navigate to the blog, where interesting news about the fair and its exhibitors is provided. “We want to offer an extra service with the blog - and demonstrate how relevant interzum is to creative professionals in the interior design industry”, says Matthias Pollmann, interzum Project Manager at Koelnmesse. “For a few days, everything that represents innovation can be found in one place - in Cologne. The desire for individualised design of living spaces is one of the big trends to have been shaping the furniture industry for years. In the search for scope to create individualised designs, the choice of materials for furniture and interiors plays a decisive role today, and will continue to do so in the future. New materials, machining processes and surfaces are being brought to market within ever shorter development cycles. Alongside their variety, the opportunities to combine these different materials are also growing at an exponential rate, so planners and fabricators gain enormous scope to be creative, which allows them to fulfil the most varied of customer wishes. The only difficulty is keeping track of it all. This is where the Piazzas in the “Materials & Nature” segment becomes invaluable with their comprehensive overview of exhibitors’ highlights and coming trends in this segment. So everything that belongs in a real piazza will also be in place at the fair: culinary treats, the exchange of ideas and certainly one or two business transactions.
will be showcasing an
exciting and extraordinarily
wide-ranging mix of new
technologies, materials
and surfaces. As drivers of
innovation and suppliers of the entire interior design industry they are important partners in the development of new products and design trends. interzum is where tomorrow’s trends are created. “Form follows function” is one of the well-known principles in design and these three words encapsulate the relevance of the furniture and interior construction industries’ supplying sections who, with their new ideas and materials, provide the framework for modern furniture design. This fact also explains why interzum is so popular with architects, designers and interior designers. In order to offer this target group something extra in terms of market orientation and information even while still in the run-up to the event, Koelnmesse has created a news blog.
