    SENATOR WILL ESPERO

    J

    une

    2013

    Aloha,

During the interim, I will meet with state officials, business leaders, constituents, and many others to discuss ideas and pre

pare for the 2014 session. While good work has been done, there is always more we can do to move Hawaii forward. Other

projects I am working on during the interim include; Hawaii Fashion Month, Children and Youth Day at the Capitol, the int

gration of security cameras at state facilities, and a state civil defense plan involving community groups.

The inaugural Hawaii Fashion Month in October will promote the local fashion and garment manufacturing industries here

Hawaii. Events include a fashion trade show, the Governors Fashion Awards, and various opportunities to network and leaabout Hawaiis burgeoning fashion industry. The initiative was awarded a $150,000 grant from the state to build the found

tion of what promises to be a great opportunity to grow this sector of Hawaiis economy.

    Mahalo, Will

    - West Loch Explosion Memorial -

Above: Senator Espero attended the annual memorial service for the victims of the West Loch explosion. On May 21, 1944

as landing ships in West Loch were preparing for the Saipan invasion, an explosion in a fuel and ammunition-ladened boat s

off a horrific chain reaction of explosions of 3 dozen vessels. The disaster took the lives of 163 servicemen and 396 were lef

wounded. More than a third of those who perished belonged to a nearly all-black Army unit. The African American Diversity

Cultural Center Hawaii sponsors this memorial to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country.

Left: Senator Espero leads a meeting with officials from the De

partment of Public Safety, the Judiciary, and the State Depart-

ment of Defense on the integration of security cameras. Secur

camera technology would allow a central station to monitor al

state facilities. This in turn would allow for greater operationa

efficiency and lowered costs over the long run.

Right: Students from the Hawaii National Guard Youth Challenge Academy vis-

ited Senator Espero at the Capitol. The Youth Challenge Academy is an alterna-

tive education program with a goal to equip students with life skills. The mili-

tary-influenced training offers 22 weeks of training to high school students with

an emphasis on discipline and tough love.
