UN VIAGGIO LUNGO UN SECOLO.

Un viaggio lungo un secolo inizia con un piccolo passo, quello che serve per entrare nel Centro Storico Fiat.

È un viaggio unico e affascinante che, attraverso la storia della più importante fabbrica italiana di auto e non solo, racconta

la vita di tutta una nazione. Nel grande spazio di un edifi cio liberty nell’area dei primi stabilimenti Fiat a Torino, nel 1963

viene inaugurata una esposizione permanente che racconta la nascita e lo sviluppo tecnologico, sociale, economico della

Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino. Una sede che nel 2011 è stata ampliata e arricchita per i 150 anni dell’Unità d’Italia.

A century-long journey begins with a small step, the one you make as you enter the Centro Storico Fiat.

It is a unique and fascinating journey which tells the story of an entire nation through the story of the most signifi cant

Italian factory of cars and much more. In the large setting of an art nouveau building situated in the same location as

the fi rst Fiat production facilities in Turin, a permanent exhibition was inaugurated in 1963, illustrating the birth and the

technological, social and economic development of the Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino (FIAT, “Italian Automobile Factory

in Turin”). The premises were extended in 2011 and enhanced to celebrate the 150-year anniversary of Italian Unifi cation.

LA CIVILTÀ È UN VIAGGIO NON UNA ME TA.

CENTRO STORICO FIAT

Attraverso una collezione di automobili, cimeli, modellini, manifesti pubblicitari curati da grandi artisti e molto

altro, è possibile intraprendere un viaggio che copre l’intera storia dell’azienda. Il Centro Storico Fiat presenta la

ricostruzione di alcuni stabilimenti simbolo e racconta i cambiamenti nel modo di lavorare. Così è possibile ritrovare

la prima offi cina di corso Dante, dove la produzione è ricalcata sulle specializzazioni di mestiere e non esiste ancora

un ciclo continuo del prodotto; oppure lo stabilimento del Lingotto, inaugurato nel 1923, che destò l’ammirazione

di Le Corbusier per la modernità e l’eleganza del suo sviluppo verticale. Il viaggio prosegue fi no a incontrare la

ricostruzione di una catena di montaggio di Mirafi ori come era negli anni Cinquanta, e l’uffi cio del progettista Dante

Giacosa, il “papà” delle utilitarie: la Topolino, la 600 e la 500, che hanno motorizzato l’Italia.

Through a collection of cars, memorabilia, models, advertising posters created by great artists and much more,

the Centro Storico Fiat takes you on a journey that covers the entire story of Fiat. It presents the reconstruction of

certain key production facilities and illustrates the changes in the way of working. It contains a reproduction of the

fi rst workshop in Corso Dante, where production follows the trade specialisations and there is no continuous product

cycle yet. Visitors can also admire the Lingotto production facility, which was inaugurated in 1923, greatly admired

by Le Corbusier due to the modernity and elegance of its vertical development. The journey continues towards the

reconstruction of a Mirafi ori assembly line as it was in the 1950s, and of the offi ce of designer Dante Giacosa, the

“father” of the mini cars: the Fiat Topolino, the Fiat 600 and the Fiat 500, which motorised the Italian population.

TRAVELLING ON LAND, BY AIR AND BY SEA.È una grande emozione scoprire al museo quanto la straordinaria tecnologia Fiat sia volata in alto, letteralmente,

basta ammirare la produzione aeronautica. Il primo motore di aviazione Fiat è del 1908, e a partire dalla guerra

del ’15-’18 vengono prodotte decine di modelli completi di aereo da trasporto e militare. Poi, negli anni ’50, nasce

il caccia G91 disegnato da Giuseppe Gabrielli e adottato dalla NATO. Importante apporto Fiat alla prima guerra

mondiale anche per le truppe italiane di terra con l’autocarro 18BL. La diversifi cazione produttiva continua con il

primo trattore, il 702 del 1919, la Littorina protagonista del trasporto ferroviario a partire dagli anni Trenta, e poi

motori per navi, biciclette, ecc. Un viaggio produttivo che farà approdare Fiat anche nelle case, con la realizzazione

di frigoriferi e lavatrici, che saranno protagonisti della espansione dei consumi del dopoguerra.

It’s a thrilling experience to discover at the museum how high the extraordinary Fiat technology has – literally –

fl own: simply look at aeronautical production. The fi rst Fiat aircraft engine dates back to 1908, and, from WWI onwards,

dozens of models were produced, complete with freight and military aircraft. Then, during the 1950s, the G91 fi ghter

plane designed by Giuseppe Gabrielli was produced and adopted by NATO. Fiat also contributed hugely to help Italian

ground troops during WWI with the 18BL. Production diversifi cation continued with the fi rst tractor, the 702 of 1919,

the Littorina, which played a leading role in railway transport from the 1930s onwards, and then a selection of motors

for boats, bicycles, etc. A journey through production that has brought Fiat inside family homes, with the production of

refrigerators and washing machines, which played a leading part in the post-war consumption boom.

Grandi spazi sono dedicati alla conservazione e valorizzazione di un enorme patrimonio documentale. 9.400

metri lineari di scaffalature riuniscono in un unico luogo più di 5.000 m.l. di documenti cartacei: 300.000 disegni

tecnici, 5.000 tra volumi e riviste di automobilismo e storia industriale, e più di 6 milioni di immagini (stampe,

diacolor, lastre e negativi), oltre 200 ore di fi lmati storici, documenti, fotografi e, tutti digitalizzati. Al piano terra, per

la consultazione dei documenti, è a disposizione di appassionati e ricercatori una sala arredata con parte dei mobili

degli uffi ci della storica palazzina Fiat di corso Dante, e con capolavori particolarmente pregiati della pittura italiana.

Ample room is dedicated to the preservation and valorisation of an enormous documentary heritage. 9,400

linear metres of shelving pool together over 5,000 l.m. of hard copy documents: 300,000 technical drawings,

5,000 automotive and industrial history magazines and books, and over 6 million images (prints, diacolor,

plates and negatives), more than 200 hours of historical footage, documents, photographs, which have all been

digitised. On the ground floor, documents can be consulted by enthusiasts and researchers in a special room

furnished with some of the office furniture from the historical Fiat building in Corso Dante, and adorned with

the finest masterpieces of Italian painting.

A JOURNEY WHERE YOU SENSE THE FUTURE, TODAY.Provoca grande curiosità nei visitatori vedere la prima vettura Fiat, la 3½ Hp, ma è certamente una grande

emozione trovarsi di fronte a modelli di auto nate nella prima metà del ’900 e che ancora oggi hanno il fascino della

modernità. Basta guardare il prototipo della 8V con la sua straordinaria carrozzeria in vetroresina con scocca, portiere

e sedili ricavati in un solo pezzo, è un esemplare unico che appartiene al Centro Storico. Il modello di serie della 8V

viene prodotto in 114 esemplari tra il ’52 e il ’54, ha il motore a 8 cilindri e ruote a quattro sospensioni indipendenti,

è un’auto avveniristica, artigianale e industriale che sembra “disegnata dal vento” e che si è distinta in numerose

competizioni. Fascino incredibile ha anche la 525SS, giudicata da Automotive Quarterly “uno dei cinque modelli di auto

più belli di ogni tempo” o l’impressionante “Mefi stofele”, equipaggiata con un motore d’aviazione, che nel 1924 batté il

record mondiale assoluto di velocità raggiungendo i 234 chilometri orari.

Visitors are always curious to see the fi rst ever Fiat car, the 3½ HP, and it is without a doubt a great experience to

fi nd yourself in front of cars dating back to the fi rst half of the 20th Century and which still have the appeal of modernity

today. Just look at the prototype of the 8V, with its extraordinary fi breglass body where the shell, doors and seats are

in a single block: this unique vehicle belongs to the Centro Storico. 114 vehicles of the standard steel-bodied 8V were

produced between 1952 and 1954, featuring an 8-cylinder engine driving wheels with all-round independent suspension.

It is a futuristic, fi nely crafted and industrial car that looks as though it has been “designed by the wind” and which has

distinguished itself in a host of competitions. The 525SS, which was judged by Automotive Quarterly to be “one of the fi ve

most beautiful car models of all time” is also captivating, along with the incredible “Mefi stofele”, equipped with an aviation

engine, which set the world speed record in 1924, reaching a whopping 234 kilometres per hour.
