The Auburn Indian Music Ensemble, directed by Dr. S. Raj Chaudhury, includes undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff from Auburn University. They perform classical and semi-classical vocal pieces in the North Indian tradition accompanied by traditional instruments – sitar, tanpura (drone), harmonium (keyboard), tabla (drums) and swarmandal (harp) among others.

Pia Sen founded Notinee Indian Dance Group in 2006. It is the only group in Alabama that specializes in the unique Indian classical-fusion dance style first envisioned by India’s Nobel-laureate poet, Rabindranath Tagore. This style blends two contrasting classical dance styles (Manipuri and Odissi) with elements of folk dance from various parts of India. Today’s dancers hail from India, China, El Salvador, and the United States.

The Alabama State Council on the Arts has awarded Sudha Raghuram, artistic director of Shivalaya School of Dance based in Montgomery, AL, its Folk Artists Apprenticeship Grant every other year since 2000. In 2013, she was awarded the dance fellowship and was selected for the Alabama Touring Artist Program to perform in public schools across Alabama. Sudha and her senior students, Kathryn Marangoly and Nayani Ramamurthy will perform Bharatanatyam to fusion music.

Natyananda Dance School and Company, founded in 1978, performs both traditional and original works in the classical Bharata Natyam style of southern

India. Natyananda promotes understanding of universal artistic and cultural themes while showcasing the rich and unique heritage of Alabama’s Asian Indian-

American community.

Nanda Sane Dance Group: Fusion Faction specializes in a variety of folk and Hindi cinema (Bollywood) dances. The group

includes young girls and boys from all Indian states.

Piyalee Sharma, founder of Creations, shares an exciting journey exploring the incredible beauty and joy of Indian dances. Creations - a unique blend of Bharat Natyam, Kathak, Tagore styles, and folk dances of India - believes dance is food for the soul. Piyalee has choreographed and performed in Indian television and different cities in the United States since 1990.

Aastha’s Dance Classes proudly entering its 5th year in Birmingham with more than ever dance performances. We have performed in many venues around Birmingham including

Dipti Deshmane Bollywood Dance focuses on posture, coordination and quality of movement through choreography. Students learn discipline, expression, grace of Indian

dance and the most importantly, confidence in performing on stage. Students perform at local festivals and events. We also offer choreographies for songs in several languages
