It’s 37,000 feet above the sea level... I’m on my way to Shenzhen, China and I’m going to miss our weekly club meeting for the second time now...yikes! Well I do know that a makeup is necessary so I went to the Rotary Club of Shanghai while I was there just last week. They had it in Shanghai Marriot Hotel and it was indeed an experience. We ex-changed banners and had a good fellowship. Interestingly, only a handful of them are from the mainland and the bigger group were either from Europe or US. During fellowship, I had a very interesting discussion with this two gentlemen. One of them owns a construction company, from France and another is a professor in neurology from Germany. As we spoke

we arrived with this question that they asked me - “What are the three important values or criteria that a leader should have?” So as they were staring at me, waiting for an answer and with great curiosity thinking that I’ll be providing some leadership models from the books or gurus, I told them this - “Well, it is Respect, Respect and Re-spect.

By this time I was already laughing inside because of the look that they gave me. The French guy commented - “That’s it!”. I then nod-ded and explained that it means Respect Your Self, Respect Others, and Respect Your Family. I continued by saying that a leader should be able to respect himself first before he can even respect others and his family. I also mentioned that the family comes last not be-cause they are least important, but they make the entire relation-ship, to self and others, wholesome. After quoting some examples and all, the professor then said that he has never heard leadership defined with such simplicity and prioritizing self respect before any-

thing else, and he continued to talk about how this is so true and lacking from where he comes from.

One can be a well known figure, or holding many important positions, or even own many businesses, but if he/she do not respect one’s self, others and family, then he or she can never be a true leader. Now ask yourself, which area are you lacking in? Remember that we are humans after all and the great-est strength is to recognize our weaknesses so we can improve ourselves. If I may share, I still have got much work to do with the first one, which is, respecting myself. Anda bagaimana?

We had a good talk last Monday 9th November by AG Teoh on the subject of membership development. He should know because his Club, the RC of Bukit Bintang, made history by making a fantastic recovery from eight members in 2009 to 117 members in 2012 in a span of four years. They reached 117 mem-bers when he was the President. Now they are stabilising at 80, some 20 members having resigned to set up a daughter Club. Fantastic; indeed it is the word. He cited many items that enabled them to achieve this success. One of them is pride of belonging; be-cause with pride one will do everything to ensure that the Club is respected; is known; is well patron-ised; have committed members that will not taichi on any task; looks good and other things that come naturally. If one is not proud of the Club, then “none of the above” will prevail. Secondly, he said the Club must have a vision as to what it should be in three years’ time. And this vi-sion may be revised year by year; but always what do the members want the Club to be in three years’ time. In other words, the members must “buy -in” to the vision. A special committee headed by a senior Rotarian is tasked with this strategic thinking. There are many more details expounded, but to me the

two mentioned are sufficient guidance for any club to achieve what Bukit Bintang achieved. For our Club, the instilling of pride in the Club is being done by many means eg dressing up, not dressing down; participating in Club and District events; being involved in projects as a Club and not by avenues, as in our Open Day and ARE-3R projects; doing good with youths and old people; rising to the challenge and surpassing the target in fund-raising ; and many more commendable initiatives indicative of mem-bers having pride in the Club. However, we are a little lacking in the area of vision. I have a vision but a short term one; and that is to uplift this Club to its former glory by emphasising a 1Club approach through the efforts of a committed leadership. But I don’t have a vision as to what this Club should be in three or four years’ time. For that we need a “think tank” consisting of a group of senior Rotarians of experience. Presidents should not be made to do the thinking; he is too busy running the Club. Perhaps as PE he could devote his time doing the thinking and planning – albeit for his year in office – because when he is President he

should be implementing his plans; no more thinking, no more planning. But actually, in our structure we do have that group of senior Rotarians who should be doing the strate-gic thinking to assist the President and therefore the Club. After all we are an old Club; going on 50 next year.

Request from Siti Subaidah, DG 2015-16

We have about 120 Interact Clubs in our District, sponsored by 50 Rota-ry Clubs. Leadership is an essential part of Rotary and it is through our active involvement with our Youth can we help emerging leaders devel-op their potential.

Youth Service is one of our avenues of service and we are committed to nurture and mentor our youth. Interact and Rotaract is part of our Ro-tary family and we have a responsibility, a responsibility in inspiring them to aspire to be Rotarians.

While we can take pride that Interact clubs in our District is one of the largest group in this region, unfortunately, today, many clubs have taken a lackadaisical attitude towards managing our Interact Clubs and most Interact Clubs have very little connection or engagement with Rotary. Their life in the Rotary family seems to end at Interact.

The District Interact Conference is an annual District event, that brings our Interactors together to share and experi-ence leadership in a different form and experience.

It is an opportunity for our Interactors to bond, learn more about the Rotary family and this year an added bonus as the event is being hosted at the TLDM – Navy Camp in Lumut, with additional activities the kids will be involved in.

Currently the registration stands at 369 and we can accommodate 600 participants.

Please register your Interactors and give them the opportunity to experience Rotary.

    Dear Rotarians,

Each Rotary year, past, present and incoming Rotary district and senior leaders attend Rotary institutes to share infor-mation, build connections and exchange ideas about Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation. The institutes usually meet for three to five days, and the program includes:

Training for District Governor Elects, District Governor nominees and District training teams.

An update on The Rotary Foundation and its programs

A report on our polio eradication efforts

A five year forecast presented by a director or other board representative

An open forum where Rotarians can make recommendations to the board

Local and international speakers sharing information on relevant topics

A chance to network, reconnect with friends and find inspiration for continuing your service and leadership in your community Entertainment and social outings. During Council of Legislation years, Rotary institutes also include a ses-sion for COL representatives and alternates and a general discussion for discussing council proposals.

The institute held in Manila this year was to cater for Rotarians from 3 zones, namely zone 6B, 7A and 10B and this particular institute attracted 1200 Rotarians from 16 different countries that come within these 3 zones.

Among the dignitaries present included incoming RI president, John Germ, RI president nominee, Ian Riseley(2017-18), PRIP Gary Huang, PRIP Wilfrid Wilkinson and a host of RI directors. The plenary sessions and the breakout ses-sions were very informative and well attended. More Rotarian leaders from our district could attend the next institute to be held in Bangkok from 2nd to 4th December, 2016.

Among the interesting statistics- Taiwan, Philippines and Thailand are among the top 20 countries in the world in giv-ing to The Rotary Foundation. The Rotary club of Manila 101 (district 3810) made a giving of USD500,000 for The Ro-tary Foundation on 16th August. Membership rise in these zones are among the highest in Rotary’s increase of 30,000 new members in the first five months of this Rotary year. Rotary progress is indeed impressive in our zones. For statis-tic purpose, our district membership is currently 1736 members with 76 clubs while district 3310 has 1936 members with 64 clubs.

Some of the proposed enactments that were brought up for discussion were:( to be debated at the council of legisla-tion in 2016)

To provide that each club pays dues for a minimum of 10 members ( as compared to the current rule to pay ac-cording to the exact numbers of members).

To authorise the RI board to suspend or terminate a club for litigation related actions and to amend the provisions for repeated election complaints from a district.

To allow for flexibility in club meetings and attendance.

To add a fifth part to the object of Rotary to encourage a new generation of global leaders

To allow for flexibility in membership and classification.

We may or may not agree with some of these changes being proposed but these are interesting times for Rotary. Some of the fundamental principles of Rotary like attendance, classification, minimum club membership and dues etc. are being put to test but a clear picture will only emerge once the Council of Legislation meets in 2016 and makes a decision one way or the other. Our district COL representative is PDG Leslie Salehuddin.

Once upon a time a psychology professor walked around on a stage while teaching stress management principles to an

    auditorium filled with students.

As she raised a glass of water, everyone expected they’d be asked the typical “glass half empty or glass half full” ques-

tion. Instead, with a smile on her face, the professor asked, “How heavy is this glass of water I’m holding?”

Students shouted out answers ranging from eight ounces to a couple pounds.

She replied, “From my perspective, the absolute weight of this glass doesn’t matter. It all depends on how long I hold

it. If I hold it for a minute or two, it’s fairly light.

If I hold it for an hour straight, its weight might make my arm ache a little. If I hold it for a day straight, my arm will

likely cramp up and feel completely numb and paralyzed, forcing me to drop the glass to the floor. In each case, the

weight of the glass doesn’t change, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it feels to me.”

As the class shook their heads in agreement, she continued, “Your stresses and worries in life are very much like this

glass of water. Think about them for a while and nothing happens.

Think about them a bit longer and you begin to ache a little. Think about them all day long, and you will feel com-

pletely numb and paralyzed – incapable of doing anything else until you drop them.”

The moral: It’s important to remember to let go of your stresses and worries. No matter what happens during the

day, as early in the evening as you can, put all your burdens down.

Don’t carry them through the night and into the next day with you. If you still feel the weight of yesterday’s stress, it’s

a strong sign that it’s time to put the glass down.
