Ways We Know Him

November 30-December 24, 2014

Every Christmas we hear what I believe to be the very best story that has ever been told; it’s a true story told in

the second chapter of Luke’s gospel; it’s the story of the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. Unfortunately, often times,

we exit the Christmas season with the same question, “It’s a great story, but what does it mean for me?” I would

like for us to have an answer to that question this year; an answer that helps us truly understand who that baby

really was and is for us as we live this life beyond the Christmas season. This Christmas let’s focus on the ways

we know Jesus and how knowing Him in those ways can help us grow in our relationship with Him.

November 30 Ways We Know Him: Emmanuel Isaiah 7:14

The song, "Emmanuel, Emmanuel," is sung during Advent services in churches all around the world. This song is

one of the many Christmas traditions that we have somehow grown too used to; that has become somehow much

less powerful than it should be. This Christmas let's remember that one of the ways we know Jesus is

"Emmanuel," "God with us." He loves us so much, and we are so important to Him, that He came down to be

with us, to save us. As we celebrate Christmas this year; let us not forget what it really means for us that the Baby

was born...God is with us.

December 7 Ways We Know Him: Son of Man Matthew 16:13-28

Jesus gave Himself the title, “Son of Man.” This way of knowing Jesus is one that helps us feel understood by

Him; it helps us to see Him as a Savior who knows what it’s like to live as a human being, rather than a

Savior who stands to the side, unconnected and unable to empathize with us. As we continue to celebrate the

birth of our Savior Jesus, let’s focus on the power that can come from knowing He was human and so He does

understand what it’s like to live the life we are living...and He wants to help.

December 14: Cantata Service: See page 3 for more information.

December 21 Ways We Know Him: Example Matthew 9:35-36

On this fourth Sunday of Advent, as we near the day we celebrate His birth, we'll focus on one more way that we

know Jesus. The message this week will remind us that we know Jesus as "Example." One of the reasons Jesus

was born and walked among us, was to leave us an example of how we should be living for Him. Instead of cele-

brating a birthday and moving on to the next thing this year; let's remember that the Baby grew up to be a perfect

example for us to follow. What if this year's celebration included a commitment to be more like Him?

December 24, 11pm Ways We Know Him: Dirty Jesus, Our Savior Luke 2:1-20

On this night we celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus. Savior is one of the ways we know Jesus and it's a name

we use for Him often; however, I wonder if we allow ourselves to consider how dirty He had to get; how deep He

had to trod in the muck and the mud of our lives in order to be our Savior. This Christmas Eve let's celebrate the

birth of Jesus by remembering that the life Jesus had to live on this earth so that He could be our Savior was not

clean and pristine...it was down and dirty; and let's praise God for sending us a Savior who was willing to do that

for love of us.
