1. INTRODUCTION

The DW205/206 fills a gap in the DeWalt tool line for a tradesman hammer drill; European wide and globallyspoken. It will cover the huge gap we still have in the percussion 600W 1 / 2 speed segment.

It is a single speed hammer drill version of the highly successful mechanical two speeds DW505 and utilizes theNorth Star 59mm motor. The project delivers a professional grade product for the tradesman that is bying onprice and needs to drill into soft concrete and block materials and uses the drill also for metal drillingapplications. As proven by research this drill meets well the user requirements especially for the South Europeanmarkets which by no doubt are hardly to test in the engineering labs and means a great challenge for us.

The DW205/206 will be positioned as a professional product that is superior to the competition in ergonomics,durability and performance. It will be priced between the Makita HP1500/8450(51), Bosch GSB16RE andMetabo Sb560, SbE600R+L and thereby produce superior values to the user and promotes quick marketpenetration.Cannibalization risks toward the sales of DW505 are not seen yet. Midterm DW205/206 will replace existingDW203.

Manufacturing location for the European execution DW205/206 will be Spennymoor, UK. Official launchwindow is January ’01. Initial launch quantities will reach Europe by December 2000, as bulkis planned by November 2000.

While the NorthAmerican market uses the cat.no. DW511, the European executions DW205/206 are fully inline with Europes’ brand/pricing/cat.no strategy: 505 and 515 products for higher price segments by offeringmore values, fitting the 2speed requirement perfectly whilst 203 and 205/206 products especially will open anew segment and drive therefor more sales.

The DW205/206-project is part of the global Tradesman Drill Project. Main target is to develop highlyreliable, low cost drilling products –of course with professional approach- to the global marketplace usingglobal manufacturing resources and facilities.The Tradesman Drill Project scope will be a 10mm(3/8”) rotary drill, a 13mm(1/2”) rotary drill and a13mm(1/2”) single speed percussion drill.User groups to be targeted globally are plumbers, electricians, HVAC, woodworking shops, installation,glaziers, metalworkers, carpenters, handymen and maintenance people.

The attached schedule shows Europes’ needs and final requirements. Note: The so called “Molteno-replacement-drill” is not part of the Tradesman Drill Project.
