Issues in Education • the widening achievement gap from about
P5;
• marked social differences in basic achievement;
• declining student engagement and interest (especially in early secondary);
• marked gaps in Scottish Qualifications Authority ( SQA) attainment;
• staying-on rates that have ceased to grow;
• wide regional variations in post-compulsory participation;
• comparatively high level of young people not in education, employment or training.
• HM Inpsectors. Improving Scottish Education (2009)
• ensuring challenge and progression in learning through imaginative, well-judged teaching, leading to the achievement of high levels of understanding and skill;
• devising curriculum structures which reflect the design principles of Curriculum for Excellence and enable all learners to benefit from the experiences and achieve the outcomes described in guidance on the curriculum;
• working collectively to ensure that children, young people and adult learners make successful transitions between stages or establishments and from education to the world of work, building upon their prior learning;
• enabling all learners to apply learning in active and creative ways;

Tasks • Dundee Academy of Sport is trying to address social mobility/widening access in three key areas:-
– Work with SIMD 20 schools to raise aspirations regarding attainment and further study (curricular activities; summer camps)
– Work with FE partner to increase articulation to HE
– Upskilling the workforce through CPD activities
In your organisation:-
1. Have you got activity in any of these 3 areas? a. If so, what - what is it's purpose, how is it operating, what are the challenges, what are the
outcomes/impact? 2. Are there any areas of activity which have the same ambitions, but take a different approach - if
so what? 3. If you have been doing activity in these areas, what have been the lessons learned, and what
have been the most productive interactions? 4. How does your organisation share these productive interactions/good practice activities with the
sector? 5. From today's workshop - has there been anything you think that might be transferable (with or
without adaptations) to your organisation?
