We believe that we offer one of the best MBA learning experiences in the world. A bold statement, but one we believe we can justify.

We are educational pioneers – and the Strathclyde MBA, the first full time one year MBA programme in the UK - has been continually evolving, improving and striving to reflect current practice since 1966. We are one of only 48 business schools in the world to hold international accreditation from the 3 business education hallmarks of excellence – AMBA, AACSB and EQUIS.

We consistently demonstrate excellence in the quality of our teaching, research and knowledge exchange, and our drive and motivation to continue to improve is boundless. The results of the most recent UK Research Assessment Exercise 2008 (RAE) affirmed our school as a leader for “world leading and internationally excellent” research, with SBS being rated top for research in Scotland – by a long way – and 7th equal in the UK.

We operate a substantial international operation with 9 well-established international centres in Europe, the Gulf and SE Asia; we have a large international student base and alumni, offering you great potential to network both during and after your MBA studies.

While many traditional MBA programmes consist of a set of unlinked single discipline classes, we recognise that the job of an executive involves making decisions across a range of functions. The Strathclyde MBA has therefore adopted a holistic integrated approach to management education which aims to develop executive potential by giving a broad understanding of business and management and a depth of vision essential to tomorrow’s top managers and corporate leaders.

In addition, the breadth and expertise of our faculty means that we can offer more than 25 elective subjects, ensuring that you have the best choice of specialist study areas.

Unlike many other MBAs, we ensure that all of our course members are experienced business people. Therefore your colleagues will truly understand the dynamics of the work-place, and be able to contribute more readily to sessions.

Once on board, we ensure our class sizes are made up of no more than 65 –70 course members, allowing maximum interaction with your peers and enhancing the quality of your learning.

All in all, we aim for the Strathclyde MBA to be a challenging, stimulating and enjoyable experience, which will leave you a more confident, rounded executive leader.

In a brochure we can only give the most general of information and guidance to help with your choice. I hope that you will decide to contact us to discuss any specific questions you may have and I look forward to inviting you to one of our MBA previews.

Professor Susan Hart, Dean,Strathclyde Business School

For over 200 years our University has had a mission to be ‘the place of useful learning’: that statement still drives the University of Strathclyde Business School (SBS) and distinguishes us from our competitors.

Welcome from our Dean

Strathclyde Business School is Scotland’s premier business school - internationally respected as one of the most innovative and largest business schools of its kind in Europe.

Page 5: Strathclyde MBA brochure

This ethos remains true today, underpinning the industrially and commercially relevant research and teaching undertaken throughout the University.

Strathclyde is now Scotland’s third largest university, and one of the largest in the UK, with a world-wide reputation for its teaching and research. We comprise four faculties – Business, Engineering, Science, and Humanities & Social Sciences – and have a total student population of around 14,000. Around 2500 students are at postgraduate level, and a high proportion of the student population is aged 21 years or over. Currently, Strathclyde has over 100,000 alumni around the globe.

Founded in 1947, the University of Strathclyde Business School (SBS) is a pioneering, internationally renowned academic organisation that shapes and develops the business minds of tomorrow. We offer the highest quality business education and management development for both inexperienced graduates and senior managers.

Strathclyde Business School is one of the largest institutions of its kind in Europe, with around 200 academic staff and more than 3000 full-time students (undergraduate and postgraduate). The 11 subject departments and specialist units collaborate to provide a dynamic, fully-rounded and varied programme of specialist and cross-disciplinary postgraduate courses.

The University of Strathclyde received its royal charter in 1964, but its history goes back to 1796 when it was founded as Anderson’s Institution. Its founder, John Anderson, left instructions that a new higher education institution be established as ‘a place of useful learning’.

Prior to my MBA studies I was working in pharmaceutical compliance with a consultancy company, running my own ‘boutique’ consultancy firm. A scientist by education, I gradually moved into consultancy in the life science sector providing consultancy in regulatory compliance, change management and business process re-engineering via my own firm. I wanted to fill in what I perceived to be holes in my business knowledge and, academically, I was interested in learning about the theory of business as well as its practical application.

I chose Strathclyde because of its strong reputation, value for money and focus on strategy.

The Strathclyde MBA is hard work and is likely to demand more of your time than full time work – expect long hours, seven days a week.

One of the aspects of my time at Strathclyde that I greatly appreciate is the access you have to a wide range of subject matter experts. I found the door of all academic staff open and they were very generous with their time.

For me, the stand-out parts of the course were working on the project and the way in which the course builds and comes together in the third term for strategy. The MBA as a whole has stimulated me to reflect on how I behave as a manager and to reframe and learn from my previous work experiences.

The MBA is also a fantastic opportunity to network. I set up a series called “Doing Business In...” which involved students presenting on how to do business in their home country, which was a great success. I also developed links with many external agencies and am now in the process of establishing a new business venture with colleagues from the MBA course.

Another key venture for me was introducing the MBA Oath to Strathclyde. After reading an article on the MBA Oath, I decided it was something that might be of interest to the class as a whole. I firmly believe that MBAs have a responsibility in senior roles that extends further than just their company’s shareholders. As a result of that, Strathclyde became the first UK chapter of this venture which started at Harvard Business School, and this is something I will continue to be involved with as an alumnus.

PioneeringWith over 40 years’ experience in developing the best MBA programme, SBS is a major innovator in the field of business and management.

SBS was the first UK business schoolto offer:a full-time 1-year MBA programme (1966)a part-time MBA programme (1976)a distance learning programme (1983)a DBA (Doctor of Business Administration)programme (1988)

This pioneering spirit brought the Strathclyde MBA into many new countries via the establishment of international centres. These centres meant, for the first time, local managers could study for a UK MBA in their own country. This earned SBS the prestigious Queen’s Award for Export Achievement in 1993.

We operate nine international Strathclyde MBA centres: Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, the Gulf (Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Bahrain and Oman), Switzerland and Greece. As a result, there are approximately 2000 course members currently enrolled on the Strathclyde MBA around the world.

International Accreditation and Academic ExcellenceAccreditation offers a very objective way of measuring a business school’s credentials. For example, the quality of education on offer, the school’s facilities, the student body and the faculty, can all be reviewed as part of an accreditation process.

Globally, there are three organisations that are recognised as offering credible ‘seals of approvals’ on business schools and their programmes. They are:

AMBA - originating in the UK, the Association of MBAs is the only one of the 3 main bodies to accredit MBA courses rather than the host institutions. www.mba.org.uk

AACSB - Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business is the USA’s best known accreditation body. Despite a very American membership (few business schools outside the USA have this award), it remains the hallmark for any business school with world-class ambitions. www.aacsb.edu

EQUIS - the European Quality Improvement System is the newest of the big 3 accrediting bodies and has the smallest membership. It was formed to address the European problem of diverse national accreditation systems, and is gaining ground outside Europe. www.efmd.org

Strathclyde is the only business school in Scotland, and one of only 48 in the world, to hold all 3 of the aforementioned hallmarks of excellence.

Accreditation in the UAEIn addition to triple accreditation, Strathclyde Business School is Europe’s first university faculty to be awarded a licence to operate an MBA programme in the United Arab Emirates. It was scrutinised by the deans of three top US Business Schools as part of the process carried out by the UAE Commission for Academic Accreditation. The licence establishes the school as an educational institution officially recognised by the UAE government.

Research ExcellenceIn addition to our international accreditation, Strathclyde has a reputation for research excellence.

Most recently, in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, Strathclyde Business School has been rated 1st in Scotland and 7th in the UK in the latest comprehensive rating of research.

This news affirms SBS as a leader for “world leading and internationally excellent” research.

Strathclyde is the only business school in Scotland, and one of only 48 in the world, to be triple accredited.

MBA OathStrathclyde Business School is the first UK chapter of the MBA Oath, a voluntary pledge for graduating MBAs and alumni to ‘create value responsibly and ethically’, first started by a group from the Class of 2009 graduates of Harvard Business School in the USA.

The purpose of the MBA Oath - described as a ‘Hippocratic Oath’ for managers - is to make a difference in the lives of students who take the oath; challenge other classmates to work with a higher ethical standard, whether they take the oath or not; and to create a public conversation in the press about professionalising and improving management.

The Strathclyde MBA programme itself is designed to develop critical, reflective managers and Strathclyde Business School is more than happy to back this initiative.

In addition to corporate sponsors, we also attract course members sponsored by organisations such as the British Council.

Purpose and overview of the Strathclyde MBAThe Strathclyde MBA is based on collaborative learning – students share work experience, knowledge, understanding and skills.

While the Strathclyde MBA draws on a number of specialist areas, we do not aim to train specialists. Rather, our purpose is to develop you in diverse areas of management.

The MBA will shape and guide you as reflective, open-thinking, adaptive learners. This is facilitated through enhanced understanding of the interplay of theory and practice in management.

The structure and content of the Strathclyde MBA reflect all these aims and are encapsulated in the diagram below, and explained in more detail, overleaf.

The Strathclyde MBAThe Strathclyde MBA is a 180-credit programme following the EU guidelines as set out by the Bologna Process. The programme is designed around four modules: The Reflective Practitioner, Making the Business Work, Strategic Management, and Personal Development. In total the Strathclyde MBA will introduce you to a wide range of tools, techniques and theories relevant to both everyday management and strategic change.

The Strathclyde MBA is designed to facilitate your learning in a highly practical way.

The Reflective PractitionerThis module is designed to help students respond to the increasing emphasis in the business world about corporate social responsibility, stakeholder expectations and the professional practice of management. The module has three classes – The Learning Manager, Governance and Managing. This module provides you with the foundations to become an adaptive manager open to life-long learning.

Making the Business WorkThis module helps students to understand the management fundamentals and processes that are vital to business success and that are operated by specialist functional teams in an organisation. By becoming aware of these disciplines students are better able to appreciate each function as well as the inter-relationships and tensions between them.

The module has six classes – Finance and Financial Management, Marketing Management, Analytical Support for Decision Making, Operations Management, and Managing People in Organisations.

Strategic Management for Sustainable SuccessThis module is designed to help students integrate the classes in the Making the Business Work module. In addition, the classes are designed to help students explore, understand and confidently manage internal and external ambiguity, complexity and uncertainty. The Strathclyde MBA is renowned for its reputation in these aspects of management. The four classes in this module – Exploring the International Environment, Strategy Analysis and Evaluation, Making Strategy, and Strategic Consulting in Practice – are designed with these issues in mind. The final class – Strategic Consulting in Practice – provides you with an opportunity to work with a live organisational issue in conjunction with a client organisation. The client will feature significantly in the evaluation of the class. Designing the class in such a way provides you with many insights into the uncertainties of managing yourself, the task of strategising and meeting the expectations of the client.

Programme structureand content

To reflect both the latest challenges facing business and the latest insights from our world-leading research, the range of electives is revised annually.

Page 19: Strathclyde MBA brochure

Personal DevelopmentAs students progress through the Strathclyde MBA we work with them to help them ‘personalise’ their learning and development. To meet that objective we open up the Strathclyde MBA and provide students with possibilities and choices. We do that through two routes – Elective Classes and the final MBA Project.

Elective ClassesWith a pool of over 120 academic experts across a wide range of specialist departments in SBS we are able to offer a wide range of classes. In practice, this means that we are able to offer more than 25 different electives all taught by subject specialists.

There are a wide range of routes open to students to study these classes – full-time, weekend classes, and classes in the international centres. Subject to availability, these full-time classes in Glasgow facilitate a ‘fast-track’ through the Strathclyde MBA for all of our part-time students, whether based in Glasgow or internationally. One major advantage of these elective classes is the opportunity to learn about the chosen subject alongside a group of like-minded international colleagues.

To reflect both the latest challenges facing business and the latest insights from our world-leading research, the range of electives is revised annually. For a full list of the latest selection of electives on offer please enquire with our admissions office.

MBA ProjectThe capstone element of the Strathclyde MBA is the MBA project, which gives you an opportunity to examine in depth a managerial, organisational or environmental issue of your choice over an extended period of time. The design of the MBA project enables you to put into practice the knowledge and skills that you have developed throughout the Strathclyde MBA. Wherever possible we will assist you in identifying appropriate organisations.

The primary aim is to reinforce your learning and development in an area of your choice and, with our encouragement, to undertake in a host organisation. The project is an integral part of the Strathclyde MBA, and the final Project Report will be 13,000 – 16,000 words.

At SBS we recognise that career development is one of the main reasons why people invest in an MBA. The MBA job market offers plenty of global opportunity but is complex and challenging. So, when you join us, you will have access to our integrated Career Focus Programme, consisting of career planning and skills development and unlimited access to personal counselling and coaching.

Our careers programme is delivered throughout the year, but key points are the Personal Development Week in Term 1, Careers Week in Term 2, and our Assessment Centre Sessions in Term 3.

To supplement this face-to-face support, delivered in-house and by top consultants, you will also have access to a library of MBA-specific information and resources through our unique Careers Portal. This offers company and market information, both UK and global, vacancies all over the world, and links to top MBA sites.

One of our flagship events is the Scottish MBA Career Fair (www.strath.ac.uk/mbafair) initiated at SBS and now a fixed point in the Scottish recruitment calendar. Companies consistently represented include Accenture, Amazon, IBM, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Procter and Gamble and many others.

Many students may do an MBA with an idea for a new venture at the end of it.

There are plenty of opportunities to get practical advice and support and to interact with the entrepreneurial community, for example, through the Strathclyde Entrepreneurial Network (SEN) and Strathclyde 100, a network of the University’s successful entrepreneurs, which offers a mentoring programme.

Networking is a cornerstone of our approach and, via the SBS network, you can meet students from other business schools, as well as company and alumni contacts, through a variety of events and visits. The Strathclyde Business Forum, run for and by students and supported by staff, provides an opportunity to form interest groups, network, and invite speakers.

The end result? You will have the understanding and tools to develop your personal, strategic career plan, as well as the self-marketing and communication skills to make effective applications and impress at interview. You will have knowledge of the global job market and a range of contacts to make it work for you.

Undertaking the Strathclyde MBA is not simply about gaining an internationally recognised qualification, it is about joining a community of experienced executives who share a desire to develop their practice on a continuing basis. We see our task as facilitating this development through and beyond the MBA. Our commitment to this approach is reflected not only in the course itself, but in the people we recruit, the approach to learning, the information resources and services available to you and the way we work with alumni.

Building a Learning CommunityThe foundation stone of our learning community are the people who join the course. In recruitment our guiding question is ‘what does this person bring to our learning community?’ The qualities we look for in candidates are experience and a hunger to explore existing practice. We build our cohorts to contain as much diversity of organisational backgrounds and nationality as possible and restrict numbers to ensure effective and mutual learning. For example, our full-time cohort is no more than 70 people.

An Innovative Approach to LearningWe believe strongly that experienced managers deserve an approach to learning that reflects their skills and knowledge. This starts with the learning materials. While the standard textbooks we provide cover the generality of subjects, we also supply bespoke core learning materials targeted towards the needs of managers. These texts are written by the teams who deliver the course and draw upon their collective experience as managers and consultants. As a result these materials reflect the latest thinking while integrating across the course.

We also emphasise a learning process in our classes that maximises the opportunity to question and debate current thinking. Unlike other schools we do not

over-emphasise the historical, paper-based, case study approach preferring, wherever possible, to concentrate on current issues facing organisations. This provides the basis for jointly exploring business issues both with your peers and with academics. No matter where in the world you undertake our MBA, Strathclyde academics will lead your class giving you the opportunity to discuss issues with them and learn from their expertise.

Facilitating your LearningLearning, for us, is not confined to the classroom. Our experience tells us that managers want the opportunity to direct their own learning towards what interests them. The Business Information Service (BIS) is one of the ways we support this. The purpose built facility based in Glasgow was created to serve the information needs of business users. Journals, market and financial reports from around the globe form just a small part of the resources of this service. The BIS is free to course members and is subscribed to by a number of corporate clients including consultancies and financial institutions. The BIS is available electronically too and is part of the rich range of resources available on our Intranet. These will update you on the latest business issues and allow you to research in-depth the areas that interest you.

Corporate connectionsAs you might expect from the school that

was the first to offer the MBA in Scotland, Strathclyde has a long track record of working with Scottish industry.

As a result we were the first port of call for PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and Scottish Business Insider when they were looking for a partner to research and analyse potential candidates for the annual Scotland plc awards. These high profile awards allow us to gain insight into the latest strategies being pursued by some of Scotland’s best companies and places Strathclyde at the forefront of management education in Scotland. This position can be evidenced in the impressive portfolio of corporate clients who have approached us to develop executive development programmes for their next generation of senior managers and directors.

The strength of our local connections is echoed in Strathclyde’s global connections. Our international operations mean that we have experience and knowledge of what is going on in some of the most exciting areas of the world. This is reinforced by the growing list of Universities with whom we have research and teaching relationships. Indeed many of our academics are engaged in research and consulting activities in international organisations. The list of companies found on page 51 demonstrates the breadth of relationships we continue to develop around the globe – ranging from corporate recruiters and sponsors to current clients.

Continuing your Development PathWe recognise that completing the Strathclyde MBA does not exhaust your need to develop and grow. There are a number of options for alumni of the school to continue their studies through continuing professional development courses or to take the next step by embarking upon the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) qualification. Many contribute to the community by acting as live clients for the current class, or work with us to create materials to use on the course. Others act as mentors for those on the course or ambassadors at events. Or you may choose simply to benefit from the activities of the 8,500 strong world-wide network of alumni that include workshops, guest speaker and networking events.

How to study for your Strathclyde MBANo matter where and how you study the Strathclyde MBA, you will graduate with the same prestigious qualification.

The Full-time MBA – an International ExperienceIf you choose to study your MBA full-time over 12 months you can expect a stimulating experience. Your year with us is an opportunity to stretch yourself to the maximum, to be challenged and inspired by the faculty and your colleagues and to make lasting friendships around the globe.

At the end of the year you will emerge a different person, confident in the knowledge that you have gained skills and abilities to help you realise your career aspirations. Studying full-time allows you the opportunity to focus on the course rather than trying to juggle study and work.

Special characteristics of the full-time programmeThe full-time course is 12 months: nine months participating in classes, group-work and personal development processes, and three months completing the MBA project. The full-time course allows you to take time to embark on life planning and in many cases reinventing or re-planning your career. In the early stages of the course there are a number of classes designed to identify your personal strengths and weaknesses. This is critical as it ensures you use your assets to full advantage while strengthening your weaker areas. The course is intensive and relies heavily on teamwork throughout – encouraging co-operation rather than competition. Within

teams, your own expertise and experience is an essential and a valued part of the distinctive character of the full-time MBA.

Benefits of the full-time programmeSince we require a minimum of three years’ work experience (the average is over nine years) you will find that your colleagues have a wealth of experience, a powerful resource that will prove invaluable. Students typically come from a wide variety of industries, public service and voluntary agencies. This means that a wide range of experienced professionals have developed their skills through the full time MBA. Typically this has included the accounting and financial managers, consultants, engineers, IT specialists, and marketing managers that you might meet on many MBA programmes, but also some people with very different perspectives, such as medical professionals, civil servants and military officers.

This professional diversity is complemented by the international flavour of the course. The class has a maximum intake of around 70 course members from a variety of countries. For example, our 2008 intake of students came from 5 continents. The only continent that has never been represented on our course is Antarctica (so far!)

Page 26: Strathclyde MBA brochure

Prior to joining the MBA I was based in London working as Derivatives Operations Analyst in the Capital Markets division of a blue chip investment bank. MBA programmes are generally aimed at those seeking either rapid promotion in their chosen fields, change of career, industry or both and the tools to success as an entrepreneur – it was a mixture of these points which drove me to consider doing an MBA. I also thought that adding an element of academic rigour to my business practice would help me add value in my future endeavours. I always aspired to doing an MBA once I had chosen my career path. With the strategic nature of the SBS MBA in mind, I was confident that it would assist me towards my career development and personal goals. I found the management staff very student-focussed, with a willingness to go the extra mile towards accommodating students’ needs. My experience with the academic staff was excellent – the teaching body is composed of recognised academics, leaders in their field, whose work and publications are referenced around the world. Colleagues on the MBA are from diverse backgrounds, bringing cultural richness and industrial experience into the course that makes one to one and group interactions an enlightening experience of knowledge-sharing. Academically, I would rate the strategy

classes and my elective classes as high points. These classes provided me with the opportunity to learn a unique set of tools to aid problem-solving, in addition to the structured framework required to articulate these to others.

I was also given the opportunity to do one of my elective classes in Malaysia as well as being awarded an ambassador scholarship to work on the research required for my MBA project in South America. These were distinctive experiences and provided the opportunity for international exposure and relationship-building, as well as enabling me to apply some of the concepts learned in classes to an international platform.

As to the MBA experience as a whole, I think the most important thing I have learned is the ability to work collaboratively and build trustworthy relationships with people. For my MBA project I decided to take - for me - a risk by not only collaborating with a colleague but taking on a lot of additional responsibility as my colleague did not speak fluent Spanish. I relished the responsibility as it played the dual role of keeping me focussed and making me feel valued. This experience has altered my perception of collaborations in the future and I think I will be more willing to take similar risks now I have seen the gains that are possible.

Part-time study - A Scottish Networking ExperienceWe recognise that the commitments of working managers mean they require a programme that fits around their careers. Strathclyde’s part-time MBA (evening study) offers course members the opportunity to gain a valued and well-established management qualification in a way best suited to their professional and personal circumstances.

A major strength of the part-time route lies in the immediacy of the relationship between managerial practice and the course. Members of the part-time route bring to their classes and groups the issues they deal with on a day-to-day basis and in-depth knowledge of current practice in their industry. Through the course materials and discussion with their peers they take back into their work situations insights that reflect the cross-disciplinary nature of the course and the contextual richness of those taking the MBA. This generative dynamic brings great value to course members and employers alike as new possibilities and ways of working are opened up at both an organisational and personal level.

Our position and strength as a business school brings a further benefit. As the vast majority of the course members on the part-time programme live and work in the central belt of Scotland, studying part-time at Strathclyde gives you the opportunity to get to know people from across the broad spectrum of Scottish industry. Currently the part-time route includes representatives from, amongst others, the financial services, oil, pharmaceutical, IT and retail sectors as well as public and not-for-profit organisations. This provides course participants the unique opportunity to establish a powerful network amongst Scotland’s up and coming managers.

Choosing to study a part-time MBA is a significant step, especially at a time when your career and lifestyle may change.

A major advantage of the Strathclyde MBA is its flexibility and responsiveness to your needs. If you change your job or move away from the area, we will be happy to discuss with you which study options might best fit with your circumstances.

How does the part-time programme work? When you join the part-time programme (our intake is in late September) you will join a group of like-minded individuals with whom you will progress through the programme. Normally you will attend two sessions in the evening each week from October to June (with holidays at Christmas and Easter) although course participants often get together more often to work together on course material.

There are also four compulsory weekend schools spread over the period of study that focus on the skills and knowledge we consider crucial for successful managers. We also offer a range of other study options including intensive seminars to aid your study of specific subjects and a selection of elective classes which run over the weekend. Typically, part-timers complete their degree in around three years although some choose to accelerate the programme to complete in a little over two.

If you value regular contact with tutors and course colleagues as well as the enriching experience of applying new concepts to your work, the part-time route is the ideal choice for you.

Overall, my MBA was a great experience. I met some wonderful people that I still keep in touch with but - most importantly of all - it gave me the basis to start my own business.

Page 30: Strathclyde MBA brochure

I have always worked in HR throughout my career. I was Director of HR for an IT Consultancy at the beginning of my MBA and am now director of my own company, Ipso Facto.

Very often HR has a dreadful reputation within business. Only a few organisations see HR as an enabler, simply because HR practitioners may not always speak in business terms and rarely demonstrate the return of investment of HR. I believed that, by doing an MBA, I could better understand the overall running of an organisation, thus giving myself a competitive advantage by differentiating myself from my peers. Completing an MBA would also give me a common language when talking with senior managers and entrepreneurs.

I chose Strathclyde Business School as it has an outstanding worldwide reputation and it also offered the MBA via part time study in the evening, which suited me, as I could study while carrying on my role as HR Director. The classroom environment kept me motivated and I was also able to learn from people from other industries.

There was fantastic support throughout my MBA from the business school in general. The lecturers were supportive and very accomplished in allowing for the students to exchange and debate ideas. The size of the class was also perfect - there were typically about 30 students which I found ideal.

Overall, my MBA was a great experience. I will remember the three years as a very special time in my life. I met some wonderful people that I still keep in touch with but - most importantly of all - it gave me the basis to start my own business.

I used the environment of the business school to develop the concept of my business - my project was on how to measure the return on investment (ROI) of HR and this was chosen to help me develop my business concept. It also meant I could use my project as a prospectus when approaching new clients, which gave me a running start once I completed my MBA as I launched my business straight after graduating. Ipso Facto was incorporated in October 2009 and supports fast growth SMEs with their HR strategies and organisational development.

My project explored a domain that was important to me - why HR was rarely accountable for demonstrating a return on investment. I knew that, if I could develop this concept further and if a measurable model for HR ROI could be created, then it would give me a key to open the doors to my own HR consultancy. And it worked! When I explain to clients my vision of HR, coupled with the subject of my project and my MBA from Strathclyde, I get instant credibility that I wouldn’t otherwise have.

Having done the MBA, I have a better understanding of the running of a

business, which I can apply in my own business: creating a marketing strategy, business plan, balance sheet and profit and loss. I’ve been able to establish a common vocabulary with the business community.

The part-time MBA is tough as you are balancing work, study and home life. It is a three year commitment, with lectures twice a week, weekend group work and a lot of reading and writing on the remaining days. My advice to someone considering it is to understand what you are committing to and to be sure that you are willing to make that commitment.

When considering an MBA, think about what you would like to achieve from it - you are given the opportunity to experience business in a safe environment; ensure that you maximise this opportunity by giving yourself some goals and key learning points that you would like to take from it. If applied as part of a career plan, the MBA can be a stepping stone to a new opportunity - it certainly was for me.

Page 32: Strathclyde MBA brochure

The main driver behind the completion of my MBA was the desire to increase my entrepreneurial skills with the intention of owning and operating my own business. The skills that I have acquired during the MBA process have provided significant insight as to how I will attain these professional goals.

The time that I have spent at Strathclyde is something I will remember for the rest of my life.

Flexible learning - beyond distance learningFor many people the hectic nature of today’s organisations means they often do not know where in the world they are going to be from week-to-week. People in this situation need an MBA programme that can allow them to direct their own studies while providing the level of support that an internationally recognised school can offer. Our response to this challenge is the Flexible Learning MBA.

The Flexible Learning MBA is unique in the balance it offers in two key areas. The first area is the balance between self-study and group interaction. The core learning materials you will receive in addition to textbooks are specifically written for practising managers by our teams of academics. Taken together with our intranet-based materials and support resources those studying by flexible learning have all the tools needed to study subjects on their own. However, we believe that the heart of MBA learning lies in the conversations between experienced managers and we make strenuous efforts to encourage peer interaction and group learning. One way we achieve this is through the workshops and seminars at which you will have the opportunity to meet with your peers.

These valuable networking opportunities are where associations and friendships are formed that continue by phone, chat, email and discussion group through, and beyond, the period of the programme.

The second balance struck by the Flexible Learning MBA is between providing a structured programme whilst allowingindividual choice in the pace of study. To do this we work to a standard timetable that will see participants graduate in three years. Our aim, however, is to assist people in formulating a workable study plan that suits their circumstances. This has seen individuals accelerate their studies to graduate in just two years, or extend their studies to fit in with work commitments.

Before my MBA, I was a Global Toy Design Engineer for a multinational entertainment firm, working out of their European headquarters in London. I wanted to broaden my skill-set, knowing that to keep ahead of the corporate game, I had to continually invest in my personal and professional development – an MBA does just that. I was also very passionate about enterprise/innovation and enhancing my international exposure, which again is a fundamental asset regardless of whether one works in the public or private sector. Prior to doing the MBA I had many friends and colleagues working in management in industry with the MBA qualification and I was impressed by their drive for results, confidence and team management skills which are essential life skills. Through doing an MBA one can quickly adopt a ‘go-getting’ attitude and be a very powerful business player, hence the rationale for doing an MBA was simple – if you want to grow then it’s the main avenue. I did my MSc at Strathclyde’s Design, Manufacture & Engineering Management department in 2002. I love the modern city atmosphere that the university has, plus supportive staff who are always willing to help and give advice on career or course issues so I knew that returning would mean I could catch up with some great people. Strathclyde prides itself as ‘a place for useful learning’ – I second that; there are loads of MBA schools out there but the balance between course and

group work was great and strategy-based exercises really do help in the working world.

With regards to the business school itself, I was taken aback by how passionate the business school staff was – their international exposure plus their links with industry are strong. According to the Financial Times, the Strathclyde MBA is a highly ranked school globally, and Strathclyde is one of the few schools to be triple accredited, which means that it has been monitored by a range of international bodies.

An MBA is not an easy course but a lot of it is up to the student to make the experience as fruitful as they want. What Strathclyde gives is the tools, support, network and passion to do it. It is not purely an academic qualification, it is about people-skills coupled with business savvy and intellect and if you have that then Strathclyde will reward and praise excellent students. It is a qualification that enhances maturity and outlook. Both staff and students are made to feel like they are on an even playing field yet feedback is given in a constructive and direct fashion which simply reflects the reality of industry.

The course really shaped me as a person – I would never have got exposure to the people, subjects or business insights if I had not invested those two years. While it was tough – long hours, loads of books and tons of presentations, exams

and reports – the benefits speak for themselves. Moreover, I have some great business friends from around the world which really added a diverse angle to my experience. I received a job offer from a major conglomerate the day I handed in my MBA dissertation and have been working there ever since. My MBA has given me a winning attitude and as a result I am very competitive. In the workplace I find myself being able to connect with people at all levels and functions, and have found the MBA to be a useful tool in networking higher up the ladder.

Part-time Strathclyde MBA via international centres – the same degree, but studied in your own country.

The Strathclyde MBA has been available outside the UK since 1988, with thousands of course participants now graduated and thousands more currently studying in their own country. This success is due to the flexible learning delivery structure developed with the local partner.

The partners in each of our international centres are carefully chosen to act on our behalf. While we maintain control andmanage the students recruited onto the programme, our partners provide us with full administrative support, well-equipped teaching facilities and are on hand to deal with your everyday needs as you progress through your studies.

The Strathclyde MBA has many study routes, but we emphasise our one MBA approach. The programme you study offshore is exactly the same programme as you would study in Glasgow, and the academics who deliver the core elements of the programme in our international centres also deliver the programme in Glasgow.

The programme format is especially designed for busy executives who need to combine career and family commitments with the demands of MBA studies. The

flexibility of the part-time approach enables most participants to graduate within two years. However, study may be spread over a longer period if necessary, to a maximum of six years.

The Strathclyde MBA is offered on a part-time basis through our international partnerships in:

Hong KongSingaporeMalaysiaSwitzerlandGreeceBahrainDubaiOmanAbu Dhabi

Further details of your nearest offshore centre are available in a separate brochure - please contact us for further information.

I work for Hess Corporation, an NYSE listed and Fortune 100 integrated oil and gas exploration, production, marketing and refining company, as Regional Manager for the South East Asia legal function. I was able to continue my employment through my MBA studies asStrathclyde has a centre in Kuala Lumpur.

I chose the Strathclyde MBA for the additional reasons that it is a ranked Financial Times top MBA programme and it has a flexible programme on the right days of the week for me. I looked at other business schools but only as part of an overall process of whittling the choices down to the most appropriate outlet.

As a corporate counsel, my client is the company. I firmly believe that proactive and preventative legal support contributes to a more cost-effective, efficient and compliant – and therefore more competitive and sustainable – business model. However, this requires anticipation and awareness of risk, exposure and opportunity through a clear understanding of business fundamentals and the business environment. Simply put,the MBA was about understanding the client.

The overall experience of my MBA exceeded my expectations. The course was, as expected for a professional long-standing institution, focused on quality, raising standards and delivering opportunities globally. However, I hadn’t

anticipated the degree to which it threw me into the vibrant and highly capable business cultures of Kuala Lumpur and opened up areas of my company previously unknown to me. It was a passport to speaking to remarkable people all over the world engaged in many different things. The MBA also pierced the veil on financial management and accounting.

I found the staff at the centre to be enthusiastic and helpful. Strathclyde staff were accessible and supportive. The course generally is broad and unbiased towards any particular module, which I think is the right approach, offering greater specialisation through the electives.

The scope of my interests, capabilities, and (I hope) influence has broadeneddramatically and I believe I’m a far morecapable corporate counsel, legal managerand member of the South East Asia business leadership for the MBA experience.

Course assessmentAssessment throughout the programme involves a combination of course work, workshops, examinations, group work and presentations.

How much does it cost?Fees for all programmes are reviewed annually and are expected to increase each year at least in line with inflation. Details of fees are available online.

What other costs might I encounter? It is strongly recommended that you have your own personal computer or laptop. ScholarshipsEach year, the business school provides a range of scholarship opportunities for those students who are self-funding their MBA studies. Self-funding status means that fees are paid for by a student’s own

means. If a student is in receipt of funding or a scholarship from an organisation such as the British Council or a corporate body, then it is unlikely that they will be eligible for financial assistance via our scholarship schemes.

For full details of the current scholarship schemes SBS offer, please visit our website at www.strath.ac.uk/management or contact the graduate admissions office.

AccommodationThe University has a large student village with a variety of accommodation both on-campus and nearby. All successful applicants for the full-time programme will be sent on-campus accommodation details.

Home to the world’s finest shellfish and fish too numerous to name, Scotland also produces some of the finest lamb and beef, raspberries, strawberries and blackberries, a whole host of game including venison, grouse and pheasant, and myriad locally produced cheeses. And, of course, the iconic whisky and haggis! A growing culture of ‘eating out’ has ensured Scottish cuisine is something to be proud of.

Outdoor activities are plentiful in Scotland. In the ‘home of golf’, places such as Gleneagles, Carnoustie and St Andrews Old Course are synonymous with world-class golf. Other activities to be enjoyed in Scotland include walking, climbing, skiing, white water rafting, sailing.
