A Message from the Executive DirectorJanet Morris-Reade, Dunbar Village Business Association

After two years of badgering, I was finally able to convince Beth McKercher of Splash Toy Shop to allow us to profile her business in Dunbar Life. In exchange, I am tasked with filling in for her with the President’s Message. My name is Janet Morris-Reade and I am the executive director of the Dunbar Village Business Association and editor of Dunbar Life Magazine.

In this issue, you’ll get to know more about Beth and her store. You’ll also meet Lil and Steve McVittie from the Celtic Treasure Chest who are building their early retirement plan into a British food retail empire. Dunbar resident, Sue Dvorak, shares a touching account of her family’s visit to a homeless shelter on Christmas Day. All three articles will likely bring holiday warmth to a heart near you.

This past fall we had some very successful events: Dunbar Village Harvest Festival, Après Harvest Festival, and Trick-or-Treat in

Dunbar Village. All three were well attended, showing us how very proud we all are to get out and support the community. Thank you to everyone who volunteered, sponsored, and attended these events.

Looking ahead, we are getting ready for our Dunbar Village for the Holidays event on Saturday, December 22nd. We’ve added a second horse and carriage, allowing us to extend the hours in all three areas. Elves, hot chocolate and free gifts from the merchants round out this family-friendly holiday event.

Finally, the Dunbar Village Gift Guide returns to inspire you for your holiday shopping. Please make the decision to buy locally this year and support your local businesses. I think you’ll be glad you left the chaos of the malls and big boxes behind.

On behalf of the over 240 businesses of Dunbar Village, Happy Holidays and peace for the coming New Year!

Magic is in the air before you even enter the door of Splash Toy Shop as the displays tempt you to peek through the windows. Once inside, your eyes dance around the walls painted in playful shades of pink, orange, yellow and blue. The crowning glory is shelves stocked with carefully selected and enticing toys that make children jump for joy.

Many neighbourhood children see Splash as an extension of their daily lives which includes home, school, the library, the grocery store and for many, a daily stop at the toy shop to visit the staff and have a quick playtime. They make themselves at home at the Thomas the Train play table; after all, this is a store about children and making them feel welcome.

Who doesn’t love a toy shop? Splash owner Beth McKercher enjoys watching the look of glee when a child discovers something at her store for the first time. She takes great pleasure in seeing adults react to nostalgic toys that transport them back to their childhood. After having been in the business for 23 years McKercher is a seasoned connoisseur of toys. She opened Splash in Steveston in 1989 (which is still going strong) and subsequently opened the Dunbar location in 1999.

McKercher aspires to provide a safe, fun

and happy environment for families, which encourages children to play through the sale of engaging toys. What was her attraction to opening a retail shop? She was drawn to the challenges that come with being a small business owner, which is akin to being a juggler. She is an employer, manages the books, attends trade shows, buys products, and merchandises the shop. She appreciates that every day is different and an added bonus of owning a toy store is it is simply a lot of fun. The friendly and knowledgeable staff is always eager to come to your rescue with age and gender appropriate gift suggestions. If you are still at a loss you can never go wrong with a Splash gift certificate which children love receiving. Splash also offers a registry for children to create their own ‘wish list’ to help steer befuddled friends and family in the right direction.

For many Dunbar residents, shopping close to home is about convenience and supporting the community. There really is no comparison between a neighbourhood toy shop and big box stores. McKercher hand selects every item that she brings to Splash. She and her staff know many of their customers by name and take pride in helping them select the best product.

A toy store never remains stagnant. Trends are always changing, however, some of the recent popular items include the ‘Perplexus’ 3D maze ball which provides a challenge for both children and adults, and gets them off the computer. For the Vincent Van Gogh on your list, Splash carries Djeco specialty art kits from France - the quality is bar none. What toddler isn’t looking to have fun? The Scuttlebug is a folding tricycle decorated to look like a ladybug or bumblebee. With a low to the ground ride, rubber wheels for indoor or outdoor use, it folds up and is easy to throw in the back of a car or store under a bed. This may become the chosen mode of transportation for your toddler this year!

The song “My Favourite Things” comes to mind with the list of goodies that you will find at Splash that include Playmobil, Lego

(a new more girl-friendly version has recently been introduced), games, bath toys, science kits, stuffed toys, books, puzzles, art supplies, Hama beads, toy cooking sets, dolls and clothes, wooden toys, baby toys, tea sets, and jack in the boxes with sock monkeys hiding inside.

Sadly, McKercher had to close down her neighbouring business Peekaboo this past spring. Splash continues to carry some of the products that customers loved so much including pyjamas, Robeez footwear and rain gear. It is no secret that many independent retailers have been affected by online and cross border shopping. These buying patterns are detrimental to local shops, therefore if you love your local businesses support them to ensure that they thrive, and you will be helping to keep your community vibrant and unique.

Splash is also a great community supporter. Aside from collecting donations of clothing and toys for the Ray Cam Community Society on the Downtown Eastside, they support the BC Professional Firefighters’ Burn Fund and decorate one of the displays at the Bright Nights in Stanley Park each year. In addition, they raise funds for the Sunny Hill Health Centre (a specialized division of BC Children’s Hospital) through the BC Toy Association.

McKercher has been involved with the Dunbar Village Business Association since its inception and is the President of the board. The board meets monthly to discuss issues and make decisions that will improve businesses and their impact in the community. She enjoys the many connections she has made with other business

owners and feels that the DVBA vision and voice has made a positive and remarkable change to Dunbar Village.

While Splash is a year round destination there is an extra attraction to popping inside a toy shop during the holiday season where you can share the glory, alongside Saint Nick, in making magic happen under the Christmas tree. A visit to Splash can set the stage for the perfect Norman Rockwell-style holiday scene. Gather around the hearth with a warm beverage, set up a puzzle or a family board game, watch your toddler meander by on a Scuttlebug - the festive season looks very bright indeed.

The Celtic Treasure ChestWhen people dream of early retirement they often visualize travelling, playing golf, catching up on reading and pursuing hobbies. Steve and Lil McVittie, owners of The Celtic Treasure Chest, reached the point where they could have pulled out cruise ship brochures; however, they chose a different path and followed their dream to open a business and eventually retire. Ten years later they are busier than ever with two additional businesses in the mix.

Steve McVittie has great respect for his British and Irish roots. His grandmother was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and his father was born in Bedford, England. He proudly reports that his grandfather, who was born in Dublin, Ireland, was a Surgeon General in the British Army and served as the Honorary Physician to Queen Victoria. Lil McVittie is of French descent. Steve McVittie jokingly thanks his wife’s heritage and her love of cooking for his slim and muscular figure.

British food has always been an important part of Steve McVittie’s life. He recalls finding an envelope not too long ago containing an outline he had drafted as a teenager conceptualizing a British store; the dream to create this business had been percolating virtually his entire life.

The McVitties are originally from Alberta. They married in 1966 and moved to

Vancouver in 1988. Steve McVittie built his career around sales which included everything from life insurance to hardware, boats, real estate and printing. Lil McVittie was an office worker and a buyer for the PNE.

After their careers had peaked the McVitties determined that Dunbar was the perfect neighbourhood to begin their next adventure and opened The Celtic Treasure Chest in August 2002. Steve McVittie was aware of the history of the neighbourhood. He knew that Scottish, Irish and English immigrants had settled in Vancouver at the turn of the 20th century and they had built many of Dunbar’s homes and named numerous streets. The McVitties made a wise choice to locate The Celtic Treasure Chest in this community as their business has become one of the largest retailers of British products imported from the United Kingdom.

Steve McVittie aptly describes The Celtic Treasure Chest as a British shop dropped into a Canadian location. Food has an amazing ability to ignite memories and indeed many customers share their stories as they browse. The sight of some of the products may remind you of a good “fry up” and transport you back to your childhood breakfast table. Or perhaps you took a wonderful vacation to Britain and recall a memorable Ploughman’s lunch?

Page 15: Dunbar Life - Nov 15, 2012

15www.dunbarlife.com | DunbarLife Magazine | Nov 15, 2012 - Feb 15, 2013

The Celtic Treasure Chest is stocked with a huge selection of groceries to help you recreate these memories.

You will find an amazing deli that offers everything from cheese, to black and white puddings, sausages, haggis and plenty of tasty meat pies. The Celtic Treasure Chest’s vast selection of specialty teas includes their number one seller, PG Tips. The shelves are well stocked with a variety of canned goods (including soups, puddings, baked beans, Devon custard and rice pudding) along with crackers, crisps, biscuits, British sweets and chocolate bars. Jars of pickles, piccalilli, chutney and mincemeat will inspire you to pull out a cook book, or you can refer to The Celtic Treasure Chest’s website for some fantastic recipes.

In addition to the array of groceries, you will find a good selection of imported hand soaps and health care products. Not to be forgotten are the collections of Royal Family memorabilia, Coronation Street souvenirs, crests, flags, tea accessories and other gift items.

Based on the success of the Dunbar store, the McVitties decided to open a second location in White Rock in October 2004. This caused a chain reaction as the McVittie’s needed a warehouse to receive the large shipments arriving from the U.K. They purchased a property in Delta and opened their third shop in April 2010, with a warehouse in the rear for their new company British Isles in Canada Wholesale Ltd.

Steve McVittie is actively involved with CelticFest Vancouver which sponsors the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. He has acted as parade marshal for the past eight years. He is involved with The Royal Society of St. George as a director, and with the B.C. Highland Games as their marketing and promotions manager. Steve McVittie has also served on

the board of the Dunbar Village Business Association.

Lil McVittie is the backbone of the company and is well loved by their customers and suppliers. She orders, manages and controls the purchasing and pricing of the stock as it arrives at their stores.

Steve and Lil McVittie work exceptionally long hours, beginning their days at 4 a.m., as they travel across Metro Vancouver to their three shops. They can usually be found at the Delta or White Rock stores while their affable and highly competent manager Andrea Boyle oversees the Dunbar location.

There appears to be no sign that the McVitties will slow down any time soon. They recently took a well deserved vacation to the United Kingdom. While there, the couple celebrated the ten year anniversary of The Celtic Treasure Chest over a pint of Guinness and a Ploughman’s special at Dublin’s Temple Bar, three blocks from where Steve McVittie’s grandfather was born.

Plastic Utensilsby Sue Dvorak

The streets of downtown eastside Vancouver were completely deserted just before nine o'clock Christmas morning. We were on our way to volunteer at "The Door Is Open" day shelter on East Cordova St. where patrons are served a hot meal on Christmas day.

We arrived to an onslaught of sight and sound. The lunch room was crowded with long tables covered in bright red and green tablecloths and neatly surrounded by plastic lawn chairs. Gold tinsel was looped across the ceiling and strings of Christmas lights flashed along the walls. Dozens of volunteers moved about purposefully, carrying boxes and trays, filling the kitchen and jammed in a side storage room. We felt awkward and in the way.

A smiley young woman stopped and offered to find us assignments. In upstairs back rooms volunteers were making sandwiches and packaging desserts for the hundreds of bagged lunches to be distributed in the city that day. Our three teenagers were placed on the sandwich assembly crew and the rest of us led back to the small storage room. There our younger girls joined a relay of volunteers putting items from the upstairs "lunch rooms" into plastic bags. Our nine year old son was asked to tally the completed lunches being placed into boxes. My husband, while supervising the tallying, helped carry the boxes full of lunches to vans waiting in the back alley.

I was wondering what to do when a volunteer accidentally dropped a huge tray of potatoes and gravy near the kitchen serving window. He stood horrified. I quickly offered to clean up, happy to be useful. This was like a familiar mealtime mishap at home except for my being cheerful.

At 10:30 the lineup of guests began to shuffle in. They were of all nationalities, dressed for outdoors, many elderly, a surprising number of them couples. Most were quiet and polite, a few chatty and outgoing, fewer still brusque or obviously unwell. Many patrons responded in kind to greetings of "Merry Christmas" with a smile while others avoided any exchange.

Volunteers poured into the room to help with greeting, food service and clear-away. My kids helped or stood shyly against the walls. I felt a pang watching a middle aged man carefully spoon his meal into a clean yogurt container. A head volunteer greeted guests loudly, some by name, bustling around like a maitre d’. These people so often overlooked were today the guests of honour and this man was intent on being their host.

Across the crowded room I noticed an elderly gentleman wearing layers of coats sitting motionless at the end of a table, a plate full of food in front of him. I wondered why he was not eating, just sitting still, staring ahead.

My nine year old son beside me suddenly straightened up and walked off, making his way around the room to a box full of napkin-wrapped plastic utensils. He took a set and continued around to where the man sat.

My son held the utensils straight out at the man in the unadorned gesture of a boy. The old man stared at them a moment, took the utensils, unwrapped them and slowly began to eat. My son walked back around toward me with a satisfied look on his face.

The room swam through my tears. Maybe I was just tired or maybe the moment was as beautiful as it seemed. This simple act was at the heart of the charity we all desired to extend that day, stripped down and pure. Imagine that we all might see each other so clearly and provide for each other so practically, plainly, intently.

I stood there in that crazy space feeling that all of us were truly together, the polite rumpled guests, the gravy-dropper, the old man waiting for utensils, my young daughter almost fainting in the lunch relay room, the rambunctious Filipino choir, the man with the clean yogurt container, the gregarious head volunteer, all together under the tinsel.

Though a gulf seems to divide our lives, at that moment I felt how little it is that separates us.

“The Garden Pro’s to Call from Spring through Fall”

There is no getting away from it, preparing your garden for winter is all about “down to earth” work, but it also gives you a chance to reflect back on what did or did not work in your garden during the season. The adage “pay now or pay later” applies perfectly to fall gardening. The work you do now will make your garden much easier to care for - and a giant step ahead - come spring.

Trim and prune your hedges and shrubs for winterFall is the best and most cost effective time of year to shape and trim your shrubs and hedges as they will hold their shape for many months. Shrubs and hedge are dormant during the cooler seasons. Up-pruning many of your shrubs creates a more open and visually pleasing garden. Remember, if you have any fruit trees, that they get pruned back in the middle of winter to encourage fruit production.

Garden BedsCut back perennials to a height of one inch above ground level. Thoroughly weed by hand all areas

of the garden, doing your best to remove all roots. Rake out the beds to prepare for mulching. Using a half moon edging tool, dig in and create a tidy lawn edge. Push back the soil that sits against the lawn edge to create a defined look.

Covering the garden beds with decomposed mulch is by far the best money you can spend in your garden. It naturally enriches the soil, reduces weeds, keeps moisture in the soil during the summer and looks great. Have the mulch delivered and shovel it around your garden to a depth of 2” or 3” thick.

Bulbs - Plant now for spring colourDesign and plant a stunning garden of bulbs for a spring colour show. There are so many new bulb varieties now available that are truly amazing.

Dig in and have fun this fall!Jessica Salvador is a Certified Landscape Horticulturist. Higher Ground Gardens is a family-run business she owns with her husband Christian Kessner, a certified landscape technician.

Creating future leaders in sustainability.

Lord Kitchener Elementary sits at the high-trafÞc intersection of King Edward and Blenheim. For the past year, the school site has been a busy construction zone as the school is seismically rebuilt. Thankfully, provincial funding provides a safe, new structure, but it leaves little for the outdoor space.

With the help of partners like you, Spring 2013 will see the installation of a food garden and natural play area, researched and designed by Kitchener students.

In April 2012, Lord Kitchener held a two-day workshop with

landscape architects. Every student in every grade had a chance to think about why green space is important and what kind of outdoor space they envision for Kitchener.

The resulting plan will give children of all backgrounds and abilities a chance to learn about the food cycle, attract and study insects and wildlife or simply play quietly.

ÒI want a place where I can lie down and look at the clouds.Ó

- Gr. 6 student

The opportunities for creativity, learning and engaging our community are endless. TodayÕs Kitchener students will leave a true legacy as they become our future leaders in sustainability.
