Remember to: Apply the advice I gave you on your
introduction. Apply the advice you annotated for to
your body paragraphs. Pick a conclusion technique from your
notes and use it (so that an editor can tell what number you used).
Type it in MLA Format and print it for Monday.
Workshop You will be put into writing workshop
groups for 1st quarter. For each major essay assignment three
people will read your paper and give feedback.
The due date will be several days after workshop so you can come in with questions or concerns.
Final Draft Due On: 9/23 by midnight!
Tonight’s Homework: Read the conclusion to Nickel and
Dimed.
Look for persuasive technique.

Says/Does ChartsDeconstructing a Text
Purpose To see how the parts fit together to
build toward the author’s point.
To analyze the main points and techniques.
To prepare the passage for rhetorical analysis.
Says Column• You summarize the
main idea of each paragraph.
• Do not use quotes.
• 1-2 sentences will suffice.
Does• You explain what
each paragraph does.
• i.e. this shocks the reader, or this brings up a counterargument.
• There may be more than one item per paragraph here.

idea for the book came about and how she became involved.
Does• Establishes her
background, job, and personality (she is not afraid of a challenge).
• Gives an example of the type of lifestyle she is used to ($30 lunch).
Paragraph #2 Says
• This type of work/life environment is common in our country.
Does• The author lessens
her own importance in the situation to point out who she is doing this for.
• She broadens the opening situation to apply to the entire country.
Paragraph #3 Says
• Shows her life advantages and her goals for the project.
Does• Demonstrates her
honesty and her advantageous background for future comparison.
• Displays her personal opinion about poverty and her attitude toward the challenge.
Your Job: Get out a piece of loose leaf and the
excerpt you read last week.
