As we enter the summer vacation period, Dubai’s popularity as a global holiday hotspot continues to increase.

Charged with welcoming 20 million visitors by the year 2020, the emirate will soon have more annual international visitors than New York or Paris.

According to a recent survey by MasterCard, Dubai currently holds 7th place in the list of the world’s top destination cities. Last year some 57.6 million passengers passed through the airport.

MasterCard’s Global Destination Cities Index revealed the most popular cities were Bangkok, London, Paris, Singapore and New York, Istanbul, DUBAI, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and Barcelona.

If the current annual growth in international visitors to Dubai continues then the emirate’s annual visitor numbers will surpass those of Singapore and New York by 2016 and Paris the following year.

Dubai International airport and the national carrier Emirates contribute significantly to Dubai’s role as a global travel hub, with an increasing number of long haul passengers opting to enjoy stopovers here.

Also ranked as one of the cities with the fastest growth in air connectivity in the region, Dubai has a wealth of events and initiatives to welcome holidaymakers this summer – from the Ramadan Night Market and Summer Surprises shopping festival to impressive and extensive indoor sports facilities the city has something for everyone.

The opening of new hotels, including the sleek 200-plus-room sleek Oberoi in Business Bay (the UAE’s first); the new Qbara restaurant, a contemporary lifestyle restaurant and lounge with an unmistakably Middle Eastern soul; and new nightspots such as Studio F in Emirates Towers, are all contributing to the city’s magnetism.

ARAB IDOL LIVE

They first captured the imagination of the arab world

on television and are now set to do the same in

person. The 2013 finalists of reality show arab idol

will take to the stage this august as a part of the arab

idol Live Tour. Mohammad assaf – the Palestinian boy

with the golden voice and winner of the show - will be

accompanied by ahmad Jamal and Farrah Yousef,

as well as celebrity Lebanese singer Ragheb alameh.

The dubai show is the first of a trio of concerts, with

two others to be held in Egypt and Morocco.

if the city’s bling malls have left you a little weary, head to the dubai Flea Market. Celebrating

its fifth year of business and usually held at Safa Park, dFM has moved indoors for the

summer. They say one man’s trash is another’s treasure and dFM is a prime example.

lounge and nightclub in the world.

Complete with 11 designer game tables, a bar and lounge serving delicious

mixologist-designed cocktails, the club is located at Wafi.

if you’re looking for some ping-pong fun on a budget, head to dubai Sports World

(dSW). Sponsored by Ping Pong dubai, 12 free-to-use tables will be available for players,

with professional local players and coaches making regular appearances to help inspire

youngsters as well as offer guidance. dSW is being held at the dubai World Trade Centre

until 21 august.

TAKING THE PLUNGE

Two of the uaE’s most popular waterparks, Yas WaterWorld and

Wild Wadi Waterpark took part in the fourth edition of the World’s

Largest Swimming Lesson (WLSL) event on 18 June. WLSL,

created by the World Water Park association in 2010, is a global

event that aims to teach millions of kids and adults around the

world that Swimming Lessons Save Lives. The World Record

attempt required Yas WaterWorld and Wild Wadi to follow exactly

the same 30-minute lesson plan as other facilities around the

world. The plan included practical safety tips as well as swimming

instruction by qualified swimming instructors. Yas is also looking to

break the record for the for the most-attended event hosted at a

single venue. Last year a record 24,803 adults and children in 16

countries on five continents took part.

FINA WORLD JUNIOR SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIP

With a record 90 countries competing, this six-day event

has become the mainstay of junior swimmers looking to

breakthrough to the senior category. Open to all swimmers

under the age of 18; this will be the fourth edition of the FiNa

competition which is held biennially. FiNa is not a newcomer

to dubai, as the emirate has hosted several rounds of the

FiNa Open Water Swimming World Cup, the FiNa World

Swimming Championships (25 metres) and the FiNa/MidEa

diving Championships in the past. Watch out for uaE swimmers

Yaqoob al Saadi and ali Hassan, whom the nation is pinning its

hopes on.

RAMADAN NIGHT MARKET

We like to call this experience soulful shopping. The last ten days

of Ramadan are traditionally the most important. at this time, when

spirituality is at its peak, believers are also busy prepping for the Eid

celebrations. The Ramadan Night Market offers not only convenience but

also a wide variety of everything you need for Eid. Think fashion, food,

gifts, home accessories, electronics and almost everything else you may

require. The Market is being held at the dubai World Trade Centre from

8pm to 2am during Ramadan and 5pm to midnight during Eid.

GARDEN OF EDEN?

The Holy Quran Park is the next biggest attraction that will frame the

shores of dubai. announced just before the beginning of Ramadan this

year, dubai plans for the 60-hectare park to educate people about the

Holy Quran and its miracles. Foliage in the park will comprise of 35 of the

54 plant and tree species mentioned in the Holy Quran such as dates,

fig, pomegranate, olive, corn, leek, garlic, onion, lentil, barley, wheat,

ginger, pumpkin, watermelon, tamarind, seder, vineyards, bananas,

cucumbers and basil.

an interactive tunnel will exhibit the miracles described in the Holy

Quran in the form of images and audio material. There will also be tracks

for running, cycling and sand walking besides an umrah corner, outside

theatre, fountains, desert garden, palm oasis and a lake. The park is

expected to open in 2014.

SAUDI’S NEW WEEKEND

Now there’s opportunity for more business with the

Kingdom of Saudi arabia as it shifts its weekend to Friday and

Saturday. The weekend switch will help the Kingdom bring its

business timings more in line with the rest of the world. The previous

weekend of Thursday and Friday allowed the country only three

business days, taking into account time zones. Saudi arabia, the

biggest arab economy, had been the only Gulf arab state to have a

Thursday-Friday weekend after Oman shifted to a Friday-Saturday

weekend last month.

CAPITAL CLUB PICKS PINK

Capital Club, one of dubai’s premier business clubs, donated

over dhs15,750 to the Pink Caravan, the pan-uaE breast cancer

awareness initiative of the Friends of Cancer Patients (FoCP)

charitable society.

The annual 10-day Pink Caravan Ride is the uaE’s most popular

breast cancer awareness drive that sees volunteer riders complete

a horseback journey across all seven emirates, accompanied by

mobile medical clinics and trained medical staff. The 2013 Pink

Caravan Ride saw a total of 150 riders complete a 323km journey,

with the medical teams providing early breast cancer detection

tests to over 5000 individuals, making it the largest awareness

campaign of its kind in the uaE and the entire region.

Arriving in Dubai at this time of the year, you will find the city in the grip of festivity and good cheer topped with generous doses of Emirati hospitality. The streets are decked

in fairy lights and special Arabic calligraphy motifs, and an infectious ambience of good cheer pervades. Ramadan is drawing to an end and after a month of rigorous fasting, the believers prepare for the upcoming Eid Al Fitr festival with much enthusiasm. Fitr means to break and it signifies the breaking of the fasting period as well as of all evil or bad habits. Special Eid prayers held at sunrise mark the beginning of festivities which last for three days.

The ‘Eid in Dubai’ event is not just a retail extravaganza but also an important cultural initiative where the emphasis is on spreading the spirit of Eid and bringing diverse groups of people together.

Do visit the Heritage and Diving Village at this time of the year for one of the most interesting showcases of the city’s Eid heritage. Watch a ‘dabke’ or traditional Arabic dance where lines of young girls sway their bodies and swing their hair to the beats while the men re-enact battles fought. The Village is also a great place to indulge in freshly made Arabic sweets - they’re prepared as you watch!

There's no better time to get a henna tattoo then at Eid. Designer creativity is at its best and, whatʼs more, you might even get it free! Most malls have a heritage corner with henna being offered complimentary. Or, just head to any of the city’s salons to get your own piece of Arabic art. Henna is a completely natural dye, doesn't aggravate allergies and the tattoo will come off in five to six days.

A must-see for art lovers this summer is the recently re-opened Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.The iconic museum recently re-opened following a seven-month renovation programme.To celebrate the re-opening of the museum at Museimplein, the curators have put together a special

Jubilee anniversary exhibition, Van Gogh at Work, the centrepiece of which is Self-Portrait as a painter. The exhibition highlights the painter’s development. The Jubilee exhibition features over 200 words of art by the great Dutch master Van Gogh and his contemporaries.

The famous Sunflowers which had been on loan to the Hermitage Museum during the renovation period has returned and now hangs among other spectacular works of art including Irises, Wheatfield works and the Woman Rocking a Cradle -believed to be a personal favourite of the artist.

Just a stone’s throw away, art lovers can enjoy a cultural journey into the Rijksmuseum which has also just reopened after a major decade-long total renovation. The star attraction there is the Night Watch by Rembrant which has been illuminated in high definition to perfection following a state-of-the-art HD-LED lighting installation by Philips.

On a much lighter note the enigmatic fictional Smurfs cartoon characters, said to live in mushrooms, have been given a blue makeover by Italian cartoonist Alexsandro Palombo. However, Palombo’s extremely stylish fashionista Smurfs depict the pack as never seen before, and include famous front row faces and designers alike from

Carl Lagerfeld, to Coco Chanel, to Anna Wintour and Marc Jacobs all sporting the traditional white Phrgian Smurf caps, that represented freedom in Roman times.

Meanwhile as the worlds top tennis players fought to win the Emirates Airline sponsored Roland Garros French Open, spectators eyes were often momentarily focused on the nifty aerial camera disguised as a model of the Emirates A 380 double-decker jet suspended on wires high above the centre court.

The model aircraft was suspended some 45 metres above the court and secured to a 35 metre-long cable, allowing it to capture the tournament area.

According to an Emirates spokesperson, it took two months to craft the fibreglass and polyurethane near foam replica of the 2.8 metre-long model aircraft that weighed 60 kilogrammes.

Emirates have signed a five-year contract to sponsor the annual ATP event and this new marketing tool certainly caught the attention of the audience while providing a bird’s eye view for those thousands of kilometres away watching the tennis greats in action.

THE BENEFITSThe 65,000m2 Concourse D will accommodate up to 18 million passengers a year, increasing the annual capacity of Dubai International to 90 million. It will be the new home of more than 100 airlines that currently operate from Dubai International’s Terminal 1-Concourse C. The new building will be also linked to Terminal 1 – which is itself undergoing refurbishment to bring it in line with the new standards in Concourse D. The new concourse is set to enhance the passenger experience as it allows Dubai Airports to incorporate new ways of improving service for international airlines and their passengers, shorten passenger journeys and present a wider range of retail and food outlets, catering for all tastes.

THE DESIGNDubai Airports aims to make Concourse D as self-sufficient as possible and the design of the new building is being constructed to make it as energy efficient and sustainable as possible.

Under the supervision of Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects (DAEP), the new building will implement several green initiatives that will reduce the environmental impact of the new facility. These include adopting recycling programmes during construction, the use of renewable energy and utilising locally sourced and recycled building materials. Among the initiatives aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of Concourse D is an array of 192 solar panels measuring 450m2 that will be erected on the roof of the building.

This will deliver the dual benefit of generating power while keeping the building cool by reflecting sunlight. The solar array is expected to generate about 1.8 per cent of the total power requirement of Concourse D. The overall volume of the building has been significantly reduced and so removes the requirement to cool larger public spaces, while providing a fully functional facility. The use of more efficient lighting systems, including daylight sensors and less heat-intensive lighting, will not only reduce the energy consumption of the building but also cut the amount of energy needed to cool Concourse D.

“For Dubai Airports, and our construction partner Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects, designing environmentally friendly terminals is key to limiting our energy consumption and carbon footprint over time and fits in with our broader environmental policy. It also supports our industry's target of carbon neutral growth by 2020,” said Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths. “With Concourse D we are taking another significant step towards providing our passengers with a more sustainable way to travel.”

WHAT’S IN IT FOR PASSENGERSConcourse D, again brings to Dubai International a number of features that all enhance passenger comfort and experience. The most noteworthy is the concept of the ‘open gate’ boarding that is being introduced at Concourse D. Here, traditional holding areas will be dispensed with passengers able to board directly from the gate. They will not be ushered into congested seating areas, and waiting time prior to boarding will be considerable less.

Designed around a central atrium, the concourse has more of a vibrant shopping mall feel than the energy of a busy airport. All retail, food and beverage outlets and lounges will be in one convenient location with no boarding gate more than 10 minutes’ walk away. The train linking Concourse D to Terminal 1 will also be located close to the atrium. This setting makes the atrium a natural meeting point for passengers. The conservational seating means you can relax, get a coffee and browse the shops without leaving the area.

Perhaps Concourse D’s most stunning highlight is the Arabian horses display. Seven horses made of Swarovski crystals will be suspended from the roof. Combined with the latest multimedia technology, they will showcase the traditions of the seven emirates of the UAE.

FACILITIESA new state-of the-art train will link Concourse D to Terminal 1 via an elevated rail system. The train, to be built by Bombardier, will provide a short two-minute transfer from centrally located stations in Terminal 1 and Concourse D. The concourse will have a total of 28 gates, of which four will be able to accommodate the Airbus A380. Of the 28 gates, 17 are contact gates and 11 are remote gates. The first and business class lounges at the concourse will be bigger than those at Concourse C, making more space available to premium passengers. Staged at The Curragh Racecourse in Ireland, the Dubai Duty Free (DDF) Irish Derby is regarded as the biggest race day on the Irish racing calendar. This year, the world’s leading airport retailer sponsored six of the eight races on the card including the flagship race at which the Jim Bolder-trained Trading Leather, with Kevin Manning on board, emerged victorious. Over 23,000 race enthusiasts watched as Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman DDF, President Michael D Higgins of Ireland and H.E. Khalid Nasser Lootah, UAE Ambassador to Ireland, presented the winners with their trophies.

DDF’s VIP pavilion at the Curragh was also a sure winner for over 400 guests. Tobacco sales rose by 13%, earning dhs269

million (uS$74 million). Confectionery accounted

for 8% of ddF’s total revenue with sales of

dhs258 million (uS$71 million), an increase of 15%

over the same period last year.

Cosmetics and watches rose by 17 per cent

and 22 per cent respectively over the same period

last year. departure sales at ddF also increased

by 13%. Sales in arrivals and Public shops also

witnessed growth of 15% and 24% respectively.

ChARITy wALK/RuN almost 3,000 ddF staff took to the tracks of dubai autodrome in support

of The Moodie Report Great Travel Retail Educathlon. in spite of the

searing heat and humidity, the participants enthusiastically took part in the two-day

event, walking and running and raised almost uS$46,000. The funds will be donated

to a group of local regional educational charities nominated by leading travel

retailers including SOS Children’s Village (brazil), alia Primary School (bahrain), Lotus

Flower Trust (india), Lycée Jean baptiste Point du Sable (Haiti) and Karatas Village

School (Turkey).

Dhs3 mILLION BOOsT TO ChARITy in keeping with the spirit of giving during the holy month of Ramadan, dubai

duty Free (ddF) recently donated dhs3 million to support a campaign to provide

clothing to one million needy children globally. The clothing campaign has been

launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, uaE Vice

President, Prime Minister and Ruler of dubai, in collaboration with the Emirates

Red Crescent Society, Etisalat and du.

Each Ramadan, a number of humanitarian initiatives are launched by His

Highness to commemorate the values and traditions of the holy month. This

year’s campaign – which runs until the uaE Humanitarian Work day on 19th

Ramadan – encourages the entire uaE community to extend its support to

clothe disadvantaged children around the world.

The donation was made through the ddF Foundation which actively supports

important social and charitable initiatives. Mr. Mohammed abdullah al Zaroni,

Head of Operations, uaE Red Crescent Society – dubai received the donation

from Colm McLoughlin, ddF Executive Vice Chairman who commented: “Since

starting our Foundation in October 2004, we have been working with several

local and international charities that have specifically helped children. This great

initiative by HH Sheikh Mohammed represents an exceptional opportunity for

ddF to celebrate the values of giving and cooperation through humanitarian

efforts, reaching those in need and alleviate their suffering.”

Dajani’s work is the shining glory of many a royal homes as well as mega conglomerates. His “poetic portraits

are an artful combination of what he chooses to photograph, his curiosity in seeking a personal connection with his subject, and a thoroughly modern photographic approach”. His most recent works are a spotlight on the Arab culture and heritage, featuring Arabian horses, falcons and the desert. Dajani, whose work can be viewed at Gallery One, is best known for his pictures of Arabian horses. His latest book Asil, Photographic Studies of the Purebred Arabian Horse has garnered critical acclaim with poet and photographic historian John Wood, who commented: “The Arabic word Asil not only describes the purebred Arabian horse but also Dajani’s work. It is a word that signifies purity, nobility and authenticity, three major constituents of his art.” Dajani’s Saqr collection is also a rich tribute to the tradition of falconry where he captures the sheer beauty of these birds of prey in a variety of environments.

Born in England, Tariq spent most of his childhood alternating between his home country of Jordan and Europe. During periods of working in London, Stockholm and Dubai, Dajani established himself as both a commercial and an art photographer. This

oscillation helped him gain an understanding and appreciation of different cultures and traditions,

which is beautifully reflected in his distinctive style of

photographic artwork. Dajani currently lives in the mountains

of southern Spain with his wife and a family of Saluki dogs and Arabian horses.

Your passion for photography – where does it come from? How did it begin?

Creative expression comes from the heart and soul. One has it or doesn't have it - like many things in life. For me it began when I was very young; I had a need to 'say things'.

What changes has photography witnessed in the past decade?

The most important change has been the digitisation of tools. Everybody's a photographer now and everybody can upload their pix!

Your most memorable photo shoot?I've had many memorable shoots. The most magical was an aerial shoot of Wadi Rum in Jordan. I shot from a very small Cessna plane with the 'hood' removed so I could lean out without being obstructed by the plastic canopy.

Your favourite muse?Somebody I photographed in Sweden called Anja. She was quite unusual and perfect.

One piece of advice to budding photographers?I was once taught that the pencil, the brush or the camera are just tools; the eye sees, the mind determines how and the heart feels. To become good one has to learn through observation, reading and practice, practice, practice.

Which project are you currently working on?I am thinking about a black and white portrait project of the 'original' campesino inhabitants of the Alpujarra Mountains. These people remind me of the Bedu of the deserts in their

traditional ways and style of living, which is different but not so different.

Do you travel a lot in your line of work?A fair amount. From Svalbard (Spitsbergen), a frozen island in the Arctic Ocean north of Norway, to South Africa, Arabia, Mexico, the USA and elsewhere.

Where was your last holiday? Barcelona, Spain. La Sagrada Familia Basilica by Antonio Gaudí is spectacular and I particularly enjoyed strolling through the old quarters of the city, El Barri Gotic, mostly observing and occasionally taking a photograph.

How do you explore a new city? By walking and stopping at nice cafes and restaurants along the way.

What are your absolute must-haves when you travel? Other than a decent set of clothes and shoes, ear plugs for the plane, running shoes and gym gear and a camera.

Do you travel light? Being a photographer I can never travel light.

How do you overcome jetlag? Rest, adequate hydration and adjusting to the new time zone.

You never leave home without? A watch, money in my wallet, mobile phone and a camera.

Which was your first camera? Do you still have it?My father gave me an Asahi Pentax when I was young. I no longer have it as one has to learn to let go to move onto other things.

Any other hobbies apart from photography? Photography isn't a hobby for me; it's what I do for a living. Other activities include reading, riding, horse training and walking our Saluki dogs.

Your favourite place to socialize in Dubai?The Qasr Hotel terrace on a pleasant evening. It is relaxing, sophisticated and quiet enough to converse, with beautiful views overlooking the sea. dv
