By Gitzel PuenteThursday marks one year

since same-sex marriages were legalized in California, and many shop owners in the Valley say their businesses have flourished since the legalization.

“Business has more than doubled over the year. I mean, it’s going crazy,” said Gregory Goodman, owner of My Little Flower Shop in Palm Springs.

Goodman and his life partner, Alan Kelly, who is also a co-owner of the floral shop, have provided their floral services for more than 600 weddings compared to 300 in the previous year.

They also opened a new

“Winter’s Tale” writer, producer, director Akiva Goldsman (Oscar winning screenwriter “A Beautiful Mind”) spent over six years bringing Mark Helperin’s novel to the screen, and it is an obvious labor of love on his part. According to Goldsman, it was no easy task since he had to compress a nearly 1,000 paged novel into a 120 paged screenplay without losing the essence of the novel. Does his film about love eternal work on the screen? Well, the answer is yes, and no.

On the plus side, Goldsman has assembled an impressive cast that includes Russell Crowe, Colin Farrell, William Hurt, Will Smith and Eva Marie Saint as well as a beautiful spirit horse that almost steals the movie as he flies through the air as only spirits can or gallops across the snow to save Farrell from demonic forces.

The story begins as Farrell’s character, an infant, is cast adrift inside a small boat aimed at the city of New York. Like Moses, he is found when his small craft is washed ashore. At first, he is raised by a band of gypsies, but later becomes like a son to the devilish Russell Crowe, sporting an Irish accent you can cut with a knife. Soon things go wrong in

their father-son like relationship when the younger man decides he can rob without killing and maiming. This puts him at odds with Crowe, who feels his protégé is turning away from the dark side and into the light.

Things really change when the younger thief comes to rob a wealthy home and discovers a beautiful red-haired woman inside who steals his heart. Even he cannot comprehend the fact that he has fallen totally in love with this beauty who is drying from tuberculosis.

If this sounds like a mish-mash it, kind of is, but if you are a romantic at heart who believe in love that never dies, angels, demons and destiny the many plot lines will be appealing.

Another plus is seeing New York change and grow over a century, a century in which our hero does not die because he has a destiny to fulfill, which adds an element of time-travel to the tale which eventually leads to a big showdown between Crowe and Farrell. One of the best scenes deals with the two adversaries on horseback, Crowe on a majestic black steed and Farrell atop the beautiful white spirit horse.

The film deals with many subjects—good vs. evil, destiny, eternal love, time-travel and the alignment of the stars in our lives. While this sounds overwhelming, things do sort themselves out eventually.

The many plot facets often make the storyline feel over-

stuffed. And if supernatural themes don’t appeal to you, neither will this fairy tale about love eternal. But if you are a romantic at heart, this may be a film valentine you will savor.

The DVD comes with added features in which the director talks about the many plot elements in the story. Another feature focuses on the four white horses used to portray the spirit horse. Particular emphasis is placed on the main white horse that was always ridden by Farrell. During filming they bonded with one, another and the horse knew instinctively what to do whenever there were retakes. All the white stallion had to hear was “Action!” and he played his part flawlessly. Warner Bros, rated PG-13.

venues, like the Triangle Inn, are also reaping the economic benefits after the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was overturned.

The owner of the inn, Michael Green, said he has hosted about 15 weddings this year.

“They want to come here to Palm Springs where they can have a legal marriage even if it’s not legal in their state,” said Green.

W ith any growing, business comes employment opportunit ies, and the shop owners hope to continue this success.

“We have 15 totals but

when we have wedding season, we can go up to 25 to 35,” explained Goodman of the employees hired each season.

Riverside County Clerk’s office issued more than 12,000 public marriage licenses from July 2013 through May 2014 and 1,668 confidential marriage licenses.

The clerk’s office doesn’t track gender, so an exact number on how many same-sex licenses were issued is not available.

Twenty states now allow same-sex marriages.

Singer-songwriter Peter Gabriel, composer piano man Elton John and hard rock outfit Guns N’ Roses revisit their rich legacies on newly released DVD/Blu-ray titles.

Artist: Peter Gabrieltitle: Back to Front - live in london (eagle rock entertainment)you might like if you enjoy: elbow, radiohead, Genesis

Tell me more: Few artists have had the kind of lasting and wide-ranging impact as English singer-songwriter Peter Gabriel. Whether help shape prog-rock with Genesis, elevating music videos to high art, or fusing world

music and rock in ways that previously seemed impossible, Gabriel continues to inspire. On “Back to Front - Live in London” (available on DVD, Blu-ray and a multi-format deluxe edition), Gabriel celebrates the 25th anniversary of his greatest commercial achievement by performing 1986’s “So” in its entirety for the first time. Filmed over two glorious nights at The O2 in London, “Back to Front - Live in London” not only features Gabriel performing the songs from “So,” but other gems including “Family Snapshot,” “Digging In The Dirt” and “Solsbury Hill.” Information: EagleRockEnt.com.

Artist: elton Johntitle: the million dollar Piano (eagle rock entertainment)you might like if you enjoy: elton John, Billy Joel, leon russell

Tell me more: Filmed over a number of performances in 2013 during his residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Elton John’s “The Million Dollar Hotel” stands out for the sheer fun of the performance. Versions of “Crocodile Rock,” “I’m Still Standing” and “Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting)” get the audience moving and often singing along at full voice.

Backed by a top-flight band and chorus of singers, John leads the ensemble through the beautiful “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me” and a touching performance of “Candle In The Wind,” the latter included in bonus material captured during a 2012 concert in Kiev. Information: EagleRockEnt.com.

Artist: Guns N’ rosestitle: Appetite For democracy 3d: live at the hard rock Casino - las Vegas (ume)you might like if you enjoy: Guns N’ roses, Slash

Tell me more: Filmed at The Joint in the Hard Rock Casino

in Las Vegas, Guns N’ Roses’ newly-issued release is available in both 3D and 2D (via Blu-ray) and 2D on standard DVD. The concert film captures the power of the band performing both classic material (“Sweet Child O’ Mine,” “Welcome to the Jungle,” “Paradise City”) and newer rockers from the Axl Rose-led outfit’s 2008 disc “Chinese Democracy.” The marathon-length concert also includes an epic version of the original “November Rain” and an especially-fiery take on Paul McCartney’s “Live and Let Die.” Information: gunsnroses.com.

The 6th Annual Jazz it Up Fundraiser

By Pamela Price It was another successful

event for Gloria Greer, Founder and Past President of Act for MS ( Multiple Sclerosis). The 6th Annual Jazz it Up Fundraiser with Bill Marx and his All-Star Band held at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage entertained 140 guests with Frank di Salvo charming the audience with ‘sound of Sinatra’ ( remember that mid century favorite, “Fly me to the Moon?) Bobby Darin, Tony Bennett and others from

the American Songbook. The event chairs were Ann Greer, Norma Greer Fishkind, Sharon DiHaworth and Bill Marx. Act for MS is a non-profit charity serving as a primary resource for individuals diagnosed with multiple sclerosis by providing the necessities for them, that vary with individuals.

For example, during the summer, ACT assists in paying electric bills for those living with MS since heat worsens their symptoms.

Many businesses in the Coachella Valley contributed to the success of Jazz It Up’s stylish silent auction. Donations ranging from a silver necklace courtesy of Karen and Tony Barone Visual Arts ( their project called Dalmation Nation’s most recent ‘dalmation sculpture’ will be installed at the Children’s Museum in Portsmouth, VA) to a gift for music lovers, tickets to the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition.

Viewed at the event were Lori

Sarner, known for her dedication with Pegasus Therapeutic Riding, ( she also has earned a stellar reputation in London for her efforts in implementing therapeutic riding for children and adults there), Gilbert Holmes and Patrick Mundt, global gadabouts, Sheri Okun, Santa Fe artist new to the desert, Dan McGrath, Morning Coffee with Dan, EZ-103.1 FM with his southern belle wife, Regina, Bea Levi, attired in a wispy rainbow ensemble with Dr. Joe King and Robin Montgomery,

Residents of Sungate Mobile Home Park in Cathedral City returned home after a mobile with explosive materials was burned down.

Residents were able to return home Saturday and earlier than expected.

Noon was the time that they were given, but police opened the gate around 11am.

Friday’s controlled burn at Sungate Mobile Home

Park was a complete success according to Capt. Moss of the Cathedral City Police Department.

The burn went later than expected at around 10:40pm due to wind conditions and safety precautions, but with the tireless efforts of all those involved everything went as planned.

“I think it was very well orchestrated. I had some doubts. I was more concerned over the containment of the

fire. You leave it in the hands of professionals and I think they did an excellent job,” said resident Greg Bertrand.

Some residents were concerned about possible damage being caused to the surrounding homes.

The only damage caused was some cracked class to a window across the street.

“Neither unit on either side of this place actually

got burned, or even smoke damaged. I’m two blocks away but still, these things wouldn’t take much to get going. As you saw last night it didn’t take long to engulf the whole mobile. So, yeah it could’ve been disastrous but, like I said, the professionals did their job and I think they did a very excellent job,” said Bertrand.

“The po l ice were awesome, the fire department was incredible. Everybody

came together and they just did an incredible job,” said resident, Lisa Willard.

Michelle Yost says that she and the other the residents of Sungate Park are a very close group and always look out for one another.

Many of the residents stayed at the adjacent Red Lion Inn and watched the burn from the third floor balcony were they had a perfect view.

Power Baseball Fail To Find Spark

Motorcyclist Dies from Injuries Suffered in Weekend Accident

PALM SPRINGS – The Palm Springs Power have been known to dominate the competition in Southern California, but the switch was flipped against the Bay Area-based Top Speed on Friday, thanks in large part to 13 strikeouts from pitcher Ryan Eddy.

Some analysts consider Top Speed the ‘Power of Northern California,’ and the team’s display of fundamental and pitching excellence against the three-time defending Southern California Collegiate Baseball League (SCCBL) champion Power at Palm Springs Stadium was the proof.

In a 4-1 win, Eddy only allowed four hits, and of his 13 strikeouts, the Power players left the bats on their shoulders for six of them.

“(Eddy’s) an outstanding pitcher,” Power head coach Harry Gurley said. “He did a job, we tried to get it going too late, and couldn’t quite get enough going to get to him.”

With only 124 pitches in 8 2/3 innings, Eddy could have gone the distance, however, the Top Speed standout walked

Brandon Gomez in the ninth and was quickly lifted for reliever Logan Truex. Truex walked Colby Hamilton and Palm Springs High School alumnus Nick King, which loaded the bases, and gave the Power its best look at the game.

With two outs, another Palm Springs High School alumnus, Ryne Clark, stepped up to the plate with an opportunity to shrink the deficit, but fittingly, he struck out with the bat left on his shoulders to end the game.

Eddy would have shutout the power had Top Speed limited its errors. After Power first baseman Hunter Bening reached on a shortstop error, Eddy threw an errant pickoff attempt that allowed Bening to get all the way to third. Bening ended up scoring the Power’s only run on a wild pitch from Eddy.

“No lack of aggressiveness, I think (Eddy) just missed bats,” Coach Gurley said. “Our batters tried their best, but he had three outstanding pitches, and when a pitcher has that, he’s really hard to hit.”

Power starting pitcher Kyle Murray tossed five innings of no-

hit ball in his last outing, yet the first inning against Top Speed was not as hitless. Leadoff

batter Ricky Rodriguez doubled to deep left field, and immediately following, Scott Mitchell took an 0-1 changeup over the right field fence that put Top Speed up 2-0.

“I just left a change up, over the shoulder – he swung good,” Murray said. “I just got to hit my spots. I got get in better shape and stay healthy, throw strikes and minimize mistakes before next game.”

Murray did settle down after the first inning, throwing our consecutive frames of shutout baseball. Gurley pulled Murray in the sixth inning after Top speed loaded the bases and scored its third run on a squeeze play.

“The first two batters – one guy gets a double. The other guy gets a home run – but other than that, he’s putting zeros up there until the fifth inning,” Coach Gurley said. “He did a good job and kept us in the game. It was 2-0 and then they finally got a run on a squeeze play and (Murray) had enough, and I felt we needed to make a change.”

In 5.1 innings pitched, Murray allowed seven hits, two runs and

struck out three batters. The Palm Springs locals, King and Clark, finished the game 2-3 with a walk, and 0-5, respectively.

On Saturday, the Power (21-4) were defeated again by Top Speed. On Sunday, the Power got back to its winning ways, taking it to fellow SCCBL opponent Team San Diego 11-1.

Currently, due to an insufficient amount of games played, the Power are only percentage points behind the Inland Valley Pirates, and in second place in the SCCBL.

This week, the Power played the Arroyo Seco Saints on Tuesday, and play the FCA Catch on Wednesday at home. Over the weekend, the Power takes on the San Diego Force for a two-game series on Saturday and Friday. The Power finished up the week against the South Nevada on Sunday.

All Power games this week will take place at Palm Springs Stadium and start at 7:05 pm.
