The Pink Floyd Experience

By Desert Star StaffThe Pink Floyd Experience,

the show for the ultimate Pink Floyd fan, makes its debut, for one show only, at The McCallum Theatre on Tuesday, March 18, at 8:00pm.

Without question, Pink Floyd remains one of the most influential rock bands of all time. Their record-breaking status is legendary. Get ready for The Pink Floyd Experience! With a spectacular light show, full quadraphonic sound and six outstanding musicians

dedicated to bringing you the most authentic Floyd experience possible, it’s “a must-see for any Pink Floyd enthusiast!” (C-News, Northampton, MA)

Today, years since their last live performance, Pink Floyd’s appeal continues and spans the generations. Their shows were described as theatrical with mind-blowing lights and unsurpassed sound. The show is not only onstage, it engulfs the audience! In keeping with this tradition, The Pink Floyd Experience is a full-on sensory

assault – interpretive videos, plane crashes, flying pig, helicopter – it’s all there, LIVE!

All of Pink Floyd’s greatest hits are performed live including such favorites as “Money,” “Wish You Were Here,” “Time,” “Comfortably Numb,” and “Another Brick in the Wall,” in addition to rarities not often heard live.

Some Pink Floyd facts: More than 200 million albums have been sold since 1967. They received four Grammy nominations in the ‘70s, ‘80s,

and ‘90s. They were one of the first bands to use pyrotechnics, video, and light shows in their stage acts. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. Dark Side of the Moon broke all chart records when it stayed on the Billboard Top 200 Album charts for 741 weeks from 1973 to 1988. Nearly one million Pink Floyd catalog albums are sold each year worldwide.THE MUSICIANS:

Tom Quinn is band leader, lead guitarist, and relentless crusader for all things “Pink Floyd”. In 1973, The Dark Side of the Moon was released. That same year, Tom bought his first guitar and started his first band. From day one, his chief mentor was David Gilmour. Tom also cites Joe Walsh and Leslie West as big influences on his playing. He dates the musical roots of The Pink Floyd Experience back to 1994, and Pink Floyd’s Division Bell tour stop in San Diego. The band hit the stage in April 1995, and went on to garner many San Diego Music Awards from 1999 to 2003.

Gus Beaudoin was born in 1952 and started playing bass guitar at age 13. With almost 40 years of musical experience to draw from, Gus is respected by his peers for his talent and tenacity. Players such as Tim Bogart, Chris Squire, Stanley Clarke and early Motown and the Monkees were big influences on Gus’s powerful rock-solid style. Gus has toured the United States and Canada playing many styles of music, including rock, country, jazz, disco, and classical. Gus and Tom Quinn joined up in 1997 and started playing Floyd music anywhere someone would let them set-up their equipment, out of pure love for the music of Pink Floyd.

Randy McStine began his music career at the age of

ten and has continued with musical discovery and artistic self-reinvention. Since his solo project Lo-Fi Resistance in 2010, Randy has branched out as a musician. His work has been used for national television commercials and he has performed with members of Yes and Triumph on a tribute album to the Canadian rock trio Rush. The 2012 Lo-Fi Resistance album Chalk Lines is a powerful hybrid of Alt-Rock, Singer-Songwriter, and Progressive influences. Featuring members of Porcupine Tree and King’s X, Chalk Lines is the most exciting chapter of Randy’s work to date.

Jesse Molloy, saxophone player based out of San Diego is a dynamic complement to The Pink Floyd Experience sound. Jesse tours around the United States with his group On the One which is led by Jesse and The Pink Floyd Experience drummer John Staten. Jesse has toured internationally with several acts, including the Giant People Ensemble and the Jamaican National Orchestra. Jesse has shared stages with many performers, including Karl Denson and the Wailers. He has studied under the great Charles McPherson and Rhett Bender.

John Cox has been playing keyboards since the young age of 9 and is completely self-taught. In 1976 he bought a Moog synthesizer and formed the space music group Embryo with synthesist Steve Roach and was hooked on creating atmospheres and textures with sound. John cites Jan Hammer, Beethoven, Carl Stalling, and Frank Zappa as his major influences. He has also played keys in the YES tribute band Roundabout, and the Jethro Tull tribute Heavy Horses.

Bob Sale was born in Oakville, ON, eventually moving to Toronto, then to Chicago, and currently lives in San Diego. Bob first heard Pink Floyd as a kid listening late at night to the underground radio station WLS in Chicago and has been playing drums professionally since he was 15. Bob has had the honor of working with many excellent artists including, Rick Elias, Eric Johnson, Albert Lee, Peter and Gordon, and Ben Vereen. He also worked on the soundtrack to the Tom Hanks movie That Thing You Do!

The McCallum Theatre presents The Pink Floyd Experience on Tuesday, March 18, at 8:00pm. Tickets are priced at $55, $45, $35 and $25 and are available online at www.mccallumtheatre.com or by calling the McCallum Theatre Box Office at (760) 340-2787. Budget Deficit Trending Down but . . .By Kevin Powell

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) reported last week that thanks to higher tax revenues and restrained spending, the federal budget deficits should decline in 2014 and 2015. They project that the current fiscal year (ending September 30th) our deficit will come in at approximately $514 billion. That’s just 3 percent of our current GDP.

The projected deficit was down from 4.1 percent of GDP in 2013. The report warned that after 2015, the federal deficit will once again start to grow because federal spending will outpace the economy.

The US GDP is projected to start slowing to less than previous decades due to an

aging population and a stagnant labor force. If that is true, there is very little that Congress can do but keep taxes high and make unpopular budget cuts.

The CBO’s report forecasts ten years into the future. They believe that Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security will push federal debt to nearly 80 percent of GDP. That will put us on the brink of another debt crisis and send interest rates soaring. A big reason the deficit has fallen the past couple of years are our historically low interest rates. The Federal Reserve can’t keep interest rates as low as they are today because it will lead to even larger financial risks in the future.

When the unknown costs and impact of the Affordable Care Act are added to the grim forecast by the CBO, the situation becomes even more unclear.

It’s been a while since we heard much about Social Security and Medicare insolvency but the latest reports still project those programs running out of money in 2033 and 2026 respectively. 2011 was the first time that Social Security paid out more in benefits that it received in payroll taxes.

It is very difficult for Congress to change mandatory spending. It would likely be political suicide for a lawmaker to vote on cutting Social Security or Medicare, so don’t expect to see our elected officials to jump on this

bandwagon. Nevertheless, something has to be done. We are heading for a financial disaster. There are no easy answers but to solidify our future,

we are all going to have to suffer a little. The sooner we come to that realization the less pain there will be for all of us.

By Desert Star StaffWhen Artistic Director Ron

Celona’s vision of creating his own innovative and cultural repertory theater began to take shape many years ago, he knew he wanted to bring a unused kind of “small and intimate” theater to the desert; and a brand-new repertoire of plays and special events that would stimulate audiences, provoke conversation and entertain at the same time.

Nothing would deter him from that dream, and while he began his mission during the economic

downturn, with the help of generous theater supporters, he began by producing and directing not one, but four topical children’s plays about immigration, displaced families, bullying, and handling loss.

At no charge - hundreds of children were bussed in to see each of these productions, through the support of Newman’s Own Foundation, The Assistance League and the Fremont Foundation. Evolving at the same time, was a search for the perfect venue, a proscenium to call home,

and the creative material to whet the appetite of a theater loving desert audience. With the building of a Board of Directors, the brains and brawn of many volunteers and the discovery of The Atrium in Rancho Mirage, THE COACHELLA VALLEY REPERTORY THEATRE, the little gem of an 86-seat theater, was born.

That f i rst 2011-2012 season began with a mélange of art-related special events, including Judith Chapman’s one-woman show, “Vivien,” The Steinway Society presenting the internationally renowned pianist, Giorgi Latsabidze, and The L.A. Contemporary Dance Company’s two extraordinary performances…folding chairs morphed into a comfortable theater seats thanks to the generosity of local philanthropist, Harold Matzner; fabulous sets were being designed by Jimmy Cuomo and Ron was finding outstanding talent for onstage and talented volunteers to learn the backstage tools of production … CV Rep was taking off; people were telling people who were telling others, and reviews were great!

The little theater that believed it could, was chugging right along, building recognition and respect as it set an ambitious schedule

for the season with four plays, three of them by the outstanding playwright, Terrence McNally, plus a thoughtful and moving holiday musical, “The Story of My Life,” and a variety of Special events. Ron Celona once again had broken through the safety net of tried and truly traditional plays to stage and direct McNally’s “Master Class,” a profile of Opera’s Devine Diva, Maria Callas, at the end of her career” “ A Perfect Ganesh,” where two middle-aged female friends trek to India in search of themselves, and coming up Wednesday, March 19th through Sunday April 6th, “Frankie and Johnny in The Clair de Lune, the last McNally show of the 2013-2014 season, where two, middle-aged adults, in the midst of their first date, discover the possibilities of a relationship beyond a “one-night stand.” night stand.”

As summer approaches, there will be announcements of scheduled Luminary Lunches with the “Stars,” which have sold out with every Luminary they have invited, special performance events and musical evenings to savor through the long, hot summer nights

By Desert Star StaffA healthy l i festyle is

necessary at any age, but for those over 50, it’s especially important. As you age, your body changes, and your risk for health problems increases. Fortunately, there are three simple things you can do to lead a healthier and happier life.

A great way to establish a heart healthy diet is by reducing your sodium intake, which may reduce the risk of high blood pressure. Starting the day with a low-sodium ready-to-eat breakfast cereal is just one way to choose a healthier lifestyle. For example, according to a recent survey, 9 out of 10 physicians recommend Post Shredded Wheat cereal as part of a low-sodium diet to help support healthy blood pressure levels, (based on an online survey of 400 physicians conducted by Wakefield Research. Results of any sample are subject to sampling variation).Enjoy Nutrient-Dense Foods

As you age, your body needs fewer calories for energy - but still needs the same amount of nutrients. It’s important to make your calories count by eating foods packed with good

nutrition such as:Fruits and vegetables: Fresh,

canned, frozen - it doesn’t matter. Vegetables are loaded with vitamins and minerals your body needs.

Protein: Add some variety to your diet with delicious protein sources such as fish, beans and peas.

Whole grains: The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends at least three servings of whole-grain foods each day (16g per serving or 48 g per day).Get Moving

Physical activity and regular exercise can decrease the risk of heart disease, stroke, colon cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend those 65 years of age or older, who are generally fit, and have no limiting health conditions, try to get:

Two hours and 30 minutes (150 minutes) of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, such as brisk walking or yoga, and

Musc le-s t rengthen ing activities two or more days a week.

By Art Kunkin (Mr. Life Extension)

You are quite wrong if you thought the government’s retirement age was 65, The fact is that if you wait until 70 to get your benefits from Social Security, you will get much more monthly than if you file at 65.

For example, if you are entitled to a check of $568 monthly from Social Security when you are 62, the earliest age at which you can file, you would get $707 if you filed when you were 65. However, if you wait until the age of 70 to file, you would get a monthly check of $1000, almost double the amount to be collected at 62.

I learned the truth about the real retirement age from an internet posting by Alicia Munnell, director at the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College. We’ve been told for years that to get their full Social Security benefit, people have to claim at their full retirement age. (That’s age 66 for people born between 1943 and 1954. After that, it gradually increases to 67 for people born in 1960 or later). However, Munnell argues those retirement ages do not really provide a full benefit if you can wait until 70 and draw

a higher amount. In reality, 41 percent of men

and 46 percent of women retire at age 62 and collect the smallest possible benefit check because they don’t wait longer, often for reasons involving bad health.

Social Security was designed to replace income once people could no longer work. In the 1930s, the retire¬ment age was set at 65, which coincided with the age used by many private and public pension plans. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Congress changed the law to enable workers to claim benefits as early as 62.

In the early 1970s, Congress int roduced the Delayed Retirement Credit, which increased monthly benefits for those who claimed after the so-called Full Retirement Age of 65. That credit, which was modest at first, now fully compensates for delayed claiming. As a result, lifetime benefits are roughly equal for any claiming age between 62 and 70, with the highest monthly benefits available at 70. 70 has become the new 65.

As I was researching this column, I also learned that an enor¬mous amount of evidence proves that richer, better-

educated people live longer than poorer, less-educated people in the United States and other developed countries. According to calculations from the National Longitudinal Mortality Survey, which tracks the mortality of people originally interviewed in gov¬ernment surveys, men whose 1980 family income fell in the top 5 percent had a life expectancy at all ages that was about 25 percent longer than those in the bottom 5 percent.2

Other interesting facts I learned this week are that almost 58 million Americans out of a total population of 316 million in 2013,(316,148,940 on July 4,

2013), received $815 billion in Social Security benefits. 37 million retired workers averaged $1,269 in monthly benefits for a total of $47.4 billion. Social Security is the major source of income for most of the elderly.

An estimated 163 million American workers are covered under Social Security. 51% of the workforce have no private pension coverage. 34% of the workforce have no savings set aside specifically for retirement.

By Theda Kleinhans Reichman“Gravity,” a visually stunning

cinematic masterpiece written by the film’s director Alfonso Cuaron and his son Jonas Cuaron, has been nominated for 10 Academy Awards. While the storyline is basically a simple one, the breathtaking, innovative visuals are groundbreaking as we, the viewers, are hurled into the vastness of space with two of America’s most popular stars, Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.

If you have ever wished to be an astronaut, seeing this deep space thriller will definitely give you second thoughts. As the film begins Dr. Ryan Stone (Bullock) is making some minor repairs outside the spacecraft along with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski (Clooney). Everything seems calm and peaceful as they enjoy the view high above earth. Suddenly, almost without warning, this routine mission turns deadly as space debris comes hurtling in their direction, eventually destroying their shuttle. Their crew mates are killed instantly and Stone and Kowalski, who are tethered to nothing but each other, start to spiral out into the darkness. In the deafening silence that ensues, they realize they have lost their link to earth. To give Bullock

a fighting chance at reaching another space station for refuge before her oxygen is used up, Clooney cuts himself free which was the basis for the best joke of this year’s Golden Globes ceremony as Tina Fey quips: “George Clooney would rather die than date a woman his own age.”

Fear turns to panic as Bullock tries to control her breathing in order to save the remaining oxygen at her disposal. Will the life sustaining oxygen last until she floats to the next station? Soon her desire to survive kicks in and she gives it all she’s got, hoping that somehow she will also be able to rescue her heroic team member Clooney, now adrift.

If awards are an indicator of what is to come at the Oscars Cuaron is certain to win an Academy Award for best director since he has already been honored in that category by the Golden Globes and the Directors Guild of America. The film should also garner a majority of the technical awards for which it has been nominated.

The soon to be released Blu-ray and DVD Combo Packs provide plenty of bonus material which gives us insight into how this amazing film was made. The painstaking process is chronicled in nearly three

hours of features that visually dramatize the meticulous innovation needed to create the world of Zero G on screen as well as the physical and emotional demands Sandra Bullock endured on set in order to achieve the sense of weightlessness. You will also experience the incredible four year journey undertaken by

director Alfonso Cuaron as he crafted this unbelievable film. What is ultimately so amazing is the realization that almost everything seen on the screen was not really there. It only became visible via technical wizardry and computer generated images. The process is almost as exciting and unbelievable to watch as

the film itself. “Gravity” will be available on

Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack, Blu-ray Combo Pack, 2-disc DVD Special Edition and Digital HD on February 25th from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. The film is rated PG-13 for intense perilous sequences, some disturbing images and brief strong language.

By Desert Star StaffOn Friday February 7,

2014, residents from the Sands RV and Golf Resort in Desert Hot Springs held a golf tournament to raise much needed funds for the local food pantry, Food Now. The event was a huge success...for both the golfers who enjoyed a beautiful day on the links...and for Food Now...with close to $10,000 being raised. Representatives from the Sands RV and Golf Resort will be making a check presentation to Food Now on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 2:00 pm. The presentation will take place at Family Services of the Desert/Food Now, 14080 Palm Drive Suite E, Desert Hot Springs, CA 92240.

Family Services of the Desert’s community food pantry, Food Now, assists over 550 food insecure families every week with their struggle

to combat hunger. Annually, 2,885 individuals receive food assistance from Food Now...with over 1,000 of those being children! Food Now also partners with PSUSD to provide additional nutritional support for chronically hungry children on weekends, they make home deliveries to disabled vets and others who are housebound due to a medical necessity, they provide special food packages for the homeless and the have bi-monthly distributions of essential non-food items for seniors.

The generous support of community leaders like the Sands RV and Golf Resort, will help ensure that Family Services of the Desert and Food Now will continue to provide life-changing, and possibly life-saving, services to those in need from our community.

– Bubbling Wells Elementary School students and residents in the adjacent neighborhood in an unincorporated part of Riverside County near Desert Hot Springs will soon have a safer pedestrian path.

The Riverside County Board of Supervisors today unanimously awarded a $151,024 contract for the construction of a sidewalk and replacement of damaged rolled curb on the east side of Avenida Florencita, between Camino Aventura and Camino Campanero. Construction is anticipated to begin by April.

Of the about 794 students at Bubbling Wells Elementary School, nearly 94 percent walk to school. There are 100 students in the After-School Education Support (ASES) and some students leaving the ASES and other extracurricular programs walk home in the dark during the winter months.

“This project provides a safe environment for the students and their parents, school staff and residents,” said Supervisor John J. Benoit. “I’m

pleased the Riverside County Transportation Department successfully competed for these funds and put together the remaining pieces to bring this terrific and important improvement forward.”

The Avenida Florencita Sidewalk Project extends the sidewalk network that serves the school. In 2011, the Riverside County Transportation Department installed more than 2,100 feet of the sidewalk on Camino Campanero, between Avenida Descanso and Avenida Florencita.

“We are pleased that this project has been approved,” said Bubbling Wells Elementary School Principal Steve Marlatt. “It will greatly enhance the safety of our students, which is always our number-one priority.”

The project is partially funded by SB 821, a program mandated in state law to direct 2 percent of the county’s local transportation fund toward bicycle and pedestrian facilities. The remainder was generated locally by the county’s half-cent sales tax, Measure A, and allocated to the Coachella Valley.

Cathedral City Creates New Era for Public Art

By Pam PriceDuring February the desert

is sending out artistic vibrations in all directions. Adding to the enthusiasm for Palm Spring’s Modernism Week and the Palm Springs Fine Art fairs, which are dominating the palate of art inspired events Jim Cox, Chair of the Cathedral City Public Arts Commissioner said that “it was no accident the Commission selected Feb. 13th for their Meet the Artist Reception held in the lobby of the Cathedral City’s Administration Building.” The afternoon event, catered by Cello’s Restaurant located in Cathedral City honored three artists, sculptors Betty Gold, Simi Dabah and painter, Tim Townsley.

Cox said, “ we knew that in February, the desert attracts people from all over the world with a high level of appreciation for art from around the world. We felt was an ideal opportunity to get involved. The artistic energy emanating from the desert is newsworthy and Cathedral City chose to take an active role in making the recent acquisitions from these three talented artists. From the five Tim Townsley paintings exhibited in City Hall (through May 2) to the striking Betty Gold in the lobby, a new image of Cathedral City is emerging. And there is Simi Dabah and his give sculptures trucked in from his Joshua Tree outdoor studio. You can’t miss Chopstix at the intersection of Davall and Ramon Road. This is the initial of five sculptures he donated to Cathedral City.

All three artists met for the

preliminary time at the artist’s reception having an opportunity to get acquainted, learn about the city’s Public Art Commission’s future while meeting with art enthusiasts from the desert and beyond. Attending were Ed Gubman, Director of Jewish Family Services of the Desert who connected Simi Dabah, a Joshua Tree based sculptor to the desert when that local organizations organized a field trip there on November 8, 2012.

Pam Price, Cathedral City Art Commissioner was on the bus that day. She recalls Mr. Dabah’s sculptures were immense in all shapes and sizes, a perfect statement of public art, stabilized yet moving in all directions. I felt his work would enhance Cathedral City, and I brought it up at a monthly Commission meeting. This began a lengthy process of acquiring Dabah’s sculptures for our collection. Mr. Dabah generously donated five pieces, one of which was installed at City Hall, that the Commissioners have nicknamed “Swiss Cheese”!

At the conclusion of the reception, the Art Commissioners moved on to the Palm Springs Fine Art Fair at the Palm Springs Convention Center to discuss future acquisitions for Cathedral City. Commissioner Cox is gently moving Cathedral City Public Art Commission in a new direction. “ With the installation of Simi, Dabah’s sculpture Massive, at the intersection of Gerald Ford and Date Palm a new era for the Commission began.”

He explained that this installation represented a symbiotic venture whereby public art is being installed on private commercial property, a project which took over two years to be consummate. “ Thanks to the developer’s cooperation the landscaping and lighting are being provided. Massive by Simi Dabah will be ‘on loan’ from the Cathedral City art collection and will create a sense of place at this busy commercial intersection.” The next Simi Dabah sculpture,”Thunderbolt will be installed at the intersection of Dinah Shore and Cathedral Canyon within several months. It’s obvious the public will discover a variety of arts installed throughout Cathedral City into to their annual “Live Arts” event in April.

Mayor, Kathy Derosa congratulated the city’s Public Art Commissions, Marilyn Cooper (who served as the Chair prior to Jim Cox), Brian Vatcher, Greg Murphy, Steve Vericker, Pam Price and newest Commissioner, John Snyder on their dedication and enthusiasm in moving public art into the limelight with a variety of artists and events throughout the year.

By Robert KinslerCan veterans still break

new ground? Deluxe reissues of ambitious titles from British rock heroes Def Leppard and Marillion, as well as a fiery disc from Bay Area blues guitar great Tommy Castro make for an especially diverse crop of recommended new releases.

Artist: Def LeppardTitle: Slang (deluxe edition) (Bludgeon Riffola)You might like if you enjoy: Def Leppard, Queen

Tell me more: Originally released in 1996, Def Leppard’s “Slang” was not a natural follow-up to the band’s multi-platinum successes “Pyromania”

(1983), “Hysteria” (1987) and “Adrenalize” (1992). Indeed, whereas those albums boasted a big signature rock sound that spawned scores of huge hits for the band, the two-disc deluxe edition of “Slang” could be well described as the band’s own “White Album” with its mix of soulful R&B (“Breathe A Sigh”), confessional ballads (“All I Want Is Everything”), world music (“Turn to Dust”) and even neo-grunge (notably heard on the bonus track “Gift of Flesh” where

guitarist Phil Collen handles lead vocals). Remastered and featuring five unreleased songs, “Slang” will surprise even hardcore fans of the band. Information: defleppard.com.

Artist: MarillionTitle: Sounds That Can’t Be Made (Eagle Rock Entertainment/earMusic)You might like if you enjoy: ASIA, Dream Theater

Tell me more: Fans of experimental rock (Radiohead, Other Lives) and neo-progressive rock (ASIA, Dream Theater) will appreciate the determined and aspiring 17th studio album from Buckinghamshire, England-spawned Marillion. Not afraid

to take on controversial socio-political issues (the album’s lead-off track “Gaza” measures well over 17 minutes and tackles the conflict in the Middle East), the musical chops and artful arrangements thrill with each listen. Originally released in 2012, the 8-song “Sounds That Can’t Be Made” has been reissued with a second disc boasting terrific radio broadcast recordings and live tracks. There is also enhanced artwork on the reissued physical release. Information: www.marillion.com.

Artist: Tommy Castro and the Pain Killers Title: The Devil You Know (Alligator Records)

You might like if you enjoy: Joe Bonamassa, Tab Benoit, Marcia Ball

Tell me more: Those who love hard-hitting, electric guitar-anchored blues will want to get their hands on the latest release from Tommy Castro where the long-time blues scene favorite is joined by the new band the Pain Killers and a myriad of notable guests. The 13-track release is highlighted by a blistering “I’m Tired” (featuring guitarist Joe Bonamassa), the Cajun romp “Mojo Hannah” (with singer-pianist Marcia Ball) and upbeat Delta rocker “When I Cross the Mississippi” (featuring Louisiana singer-guitarist Tab Benoit). NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auc-tioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should under-stand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bid-der at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursu-ant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement infor-mation is to attend the scheduled sale. PUBLISH: 02/05/14, 02/12/14, 02/19/14 First American Title Insurance Company, a California Corporation 400 S. Janet Napolitano as New UC PresidentOAKLAND - In response to

the news that Homeland Security Secretary and former Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano will become the new President of the University of California system, Kathryn Lybarger, President of the university’s largest union—AFSCME 3299—has issued the following statement:

“While UC staff, students and patients were largely excluded from the secretive process that led to Secretary Janet Napolitano’s appointment, we appreciate her years of public service and congratulate her on becoming

the next President of the University of California. Secretary Napolitano’s tenure at UC begins at a time of skyrocketing student tuition, degraded patient care quality, increased privatization of public university resources, unprecedented debt, unrivaled executive excess, and declining taxpayer trust in top University leadership. SKY VALLEY - Bernadette Schwenn, 64, a resident of Fan Canyon in Sky Valley, was arrested on Monday, July 1 on charges of animal cruelty. Schwenn lives in a makeshift shanty with no water, no electricity and a pack of Queensland Heeler dogs.

Last April, Kitty Pallesen, an animal advocate and writer received a call saying something

may have happened to the woman living in Fan Canyon and that her dogs needed help.

Bernadette, but found so many dogs with no food or water. I went back every day delivering water and food, not knowing if the woman was dead or alive. I did not know her last name or how to contact her. I started calling different agencies trying to get help for the dogs,” Pallesen

said in an exclusive interview. “The water and food bowls

were always empty. I counted 20 or 22 dogs at the camp near the road, not knowing there were more in an upper camp.

“One night a friend of Schwenn’s stopped by with a jug of water. He had not talked to her, did not know where she was nor had any contact information for her. Before he left, he said he did not understand why something had not been done a long time ago about the situation with the dogs, and that over the years

Schwenn had been personally responsible for ‘hundreds and hundreds’ of dead dogs.

Pallesen called Animal Control, the ASPCA, the Humane Society, PETA, Animal Samaritans, a County Supervisor, “and every place I could think of. Nobody called back.

“Sky Valley Park’s chapel raised money for a bigger water container. I asked the Sky Valley Fire Station if they could deliver water, but their tanks held

and the water is not suitable for

the dogs. “On May 1, I found an older

female (dog) laying out in the sun, too weak to move or drink, breathing hard. I took her to a vet trailing blood to the exam room. She was very emaciated.

“The veterinarian said was too far gone. The only option was to humanely end her suffering. I held her, whispered, and cried for her to the end, just like she was my own dog,” Pallesen said.

This dog’s death was

Desert Businesses Clamor to Attract Same Sex WeddingsBy Jackie Devereaux

PALM SPRINGS – The U.S. Supreme Court handed down a historic ruling on Wednesday, Jun. 26 to grant same sex marriages across the nation. In their ruling on DOMA and California’s Proposition 8, the justices overturned a previous lower court ruling which declared same sex marriage unconstitutional.

Within minutes of the landmark ruling, local hoteliers and wedding planners scrambled to promote Palm Springs as a premiere wedding destination.

“The Supreme Court’s

historic action today overturning DOMA and dismissing the appeal of California’s Proposition 8, clearing the way for same-sex marriage in our state is a huge victory for the LGBT community. This is about equal rights and I

recognized that we are all the same,” said Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet.

“My husband Christopher and I look forward to same-sex weddings commencing again in the state of California – and rest assured the City of Palm Springs will continue to be a destination committed to celebrating the

institution of marriage, both heterosexual and same-sex,” Pougnet said in a prepared statement

“Riverside County is prepared to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples and record their marriages immediately after the anticipated direction is received from the state and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Hopefully that day will be here soon,” said Supervisor John J. Benoit.

Tampering with Evidence Indictments

By Jackie Devereaux

Emin Bernd Alihodic was born on July 21, 1951 in Siegen, Germany and immigrated to the United States sometime in the late 1980s. Alihodic left behind two children and an ex-wife. His son, Jens (Alihodic) Luschnt, 35, came to Palm Springs on Monday, Aug. 12 to search for his biological father with only a

newspaper article describing how his dad was rescued twice off Mount San Jacinto on Feb. 9, 2009 and then again on May 13, 2010.

Jens, who speaks little or no English, was adopted by his step-father at the age of 10 and only knows a little about his biological father from stories his mother told him through the years.

“I’d like to know more

about him. How’s he been living all these years,” the younger Alihodic said through a German/English interpreter.

Jens said he started looking for his father about a year and a half ago after meeting the

own family soon and through her urging, they traveled to Palm Springs to search for his biological father.

Have you seen this man?

For several years you will face at times a sense of being or living in secrecy, aloneness and sometimes isolation - a spiritual situation. Within that isolation unexpected events occur like bolts out of the blue, electricity, revelations, the hand of God. You may feel you’re being forced into solitude and, actually, you are. But it’s good to be in this state. Something about you isn’t revealed. And then it will be.

There’s one special supportive person in your life. No matter what you do or say, they’re your friends. When things become edgy, precipitating separation or break up you ensure that connection is tended to and renewed. You contribute greatly to groups, offering originality, change, and new narratives. Often your need implementing by others. Pray they arrive soon.

Potency and intensity are two significant encounters you’re having. They will continue, having to do with your destiny, which you continue to step away from.

Extreme variations and continual changes attempt to prepare you. There’s something you can’t quite leave - a way of life, belief, behavior, an attitude. Unforeseen events will someday take you by the hand and sweep you forward. It’s a great journey ahead.

Often what you believe in your heart is at odds with what others, maintaining the status quo, believe. You’re in the middle of a great turning point. Independence is vital for this to continue. Guard against falling asleep, guard against being an anarchist, too. Which is not the same as a revolutionary. You’re a pioneer and an original thinker. Let yourself know these things.

You left your family long ago to establish safety, security, independence and your own special quiet. You need balance in the home. However, unexpected things, events, experiences are happening There. They’re like paradoxes. Reflecting something within you seeking to change. Set about organizing the instability. Instability is a state of change in itself, neither good nor bad.

Manage the situation creatively. Stability and security are in the future.

As you go through your days, week and months you will be on the lookout for things most unusual, avant-garde, out of the ordinary. You’re curious and interested in people with different ideas, thoughts that don’t conform. It’s good to learn about and discover different neighborhoods in different towns and cities. Pick a subject…like food. Discovering new realities, new regions, new cultures through food. Be eccentric. Exceed yourself.

You’re sorting out relationships, seeking to do new things in relationships in original ways. You offer unconventional activities to your friends. You’re here, there and everywhere sometimes. Freedom is needed always. Although you seek the very traditional, often you reverse that choice. Only very close and special friends understand your paradoxical behaviors. Acknowledge their capacity for patience.

Sudden situations, events & developments seem to be occurring. Everything’s unexpected. There’s no rest, ceaseless activity and people and animals in need, asking you for care and tenderness. Always you say yes. Things can feel quite chaotic, especially your surroundings. When exhausted

take to your bed. All that you do is of great service to others. We recognize this. May you rest more.

You’re constantly looking for something to ease your mind and heart. You’re constantly seeking pleasure and new ideas to fuel your creativity. Sometimes it’s insatiable, other times you’re simply exhausted from being in the world. While simultaneously feeling you’re not quite of this world. At times you’re not. You act eccentric with partners. Love can feel novel and unusual. During these times you change course-avoiding stability. Your highest level of work is your art.

It’s possible your early family life was unusual. Some would call it chaotic. Others artistic. Now you seek a quiet life, wanting the atmosphere of your family to be stable and secure. However, during this time, even as you seek balance, you also crave things out of the ordinary. As soon as stability is established, you upset the apple cart. Each stage of your life unfolds, from change to stability. Things abruptly disappear and then appear again. You’re the stability for everyone.

When anything traditional occurs you pursue instead the non-traditional. Because your mind is always focused partly on the future in order to bring forth everything new. New concepts, ideas, fields

of endeavor exposing humanity to a new world. This is accomplished through your speech, what you write, and how you relate to others. Some call this chaotic. It’s not. It’s a catalyst for the new world order.

You’re in a situation where you true values are coming forth and your personal comfort is being assessed. You’re awakening to your true needs and will learn how to say “no” to what is not good for you. This can and may be difficult. But you must have the courage of self-knowledge. It’s important your surroundings support health and well-being. Things are surprising for you each and every day. It will feel like emergencies every moment. Call forth poise and balance. As often as you can.

Boys’ Hoops: Aztecs Stay Perfect in DVLBy Dan Marinelli

COACHELLA VALLEY – Although the Palm Desert High School Aztecs had already solidified first place in the DVL a week ago, finalizing second place, third place and fourth place came down to the final day of the regular season last Thursday.

Sitting in second place, and having already owned the tiebreaker with the Indio High School Rajahs, all the La Quinta High School Blackhawks needed to do to claim second place in the DVL was defeat their gritty, undefeated rival – the Aztecs. However, since the Rajahs had won their final game against the Coachella Valley High School Arabs, a Blackhawks loss would mean dropping into a tie for third place with the Xavier Prep high School Saints.

On Senior Night, the Blackhawks took the floor at La Quinta High School poised to not only snap Palm Desert’s 11-game win streak, but hand the Aztecs their first DVL loss, and ruin what would be a perfect 12-0 record in league play.

Behind their boisterous crowd of roughly 400 fans, La Quinta started off swiftly, mounting an early 10-0 lead. The lead was built so early that an Aztecs comeback was almost predictable.

As soon as their first basket was recorded, Palm Desert’s Defense tightened up and their shooters loosened up – especially Aztecs captain and senior guard Daniel McCown. Behind McCown’s three, NBA-range three-pointers, the Aztecs closed the first quarter on a 14-2 run and never looked back.

Despite the Blackhawks valiant effort to keep the game close, everything was going the Aztecs way. Palm Desert was drawing a majority of foul calls, and getting lucky bounces. For example, two of McCown’s five made three-pointers appeared to touch every part of the rim before finally, and miraculously, falling through the net.

Palm Desert extended their lead in each of the next three quarters, and handily defeated La Quinta 54-40. The Aztecs held the Blackhawks to six points in the fourth quarter – the sixth lowest points La Quinta scored in 104 total quarters this season.

McCown – scoring almost half his team’s points – led the Aztecs with 25 points and also led the team with seven rebounds. Junior forward Anthony Murdica contributed eight points for the Aztecs. Senior forward Jojo Wiggins and junior forward Charles Hays scored 10 and nine points, respectively,

for the Blackhawks. With the win over the

Blackhawks, and for the first time since 2006, the Aztecs remain a perfect 12-0 in the DVL. The loss places the Blackhawks in a tie for third place with the Saints, and ascends the Rajahs to second place. The DVL’s regular season has concluded, however, for all four of these teams, the playoffs are set to begin this week.

The Aztecs (12-0 in DVL, 19-5 Overall) have claimed a position in the CIF-SS (California Interscholastic Federation –

Southern Section) Division 3AA playoffs, and host the West Covina-based South Hills High School Huskies (13-14/4th place in Sierra League, 4-6 Overall) at Palm Desert High School on Feb. 19.

The Rajahs (8-4 in DVL, 18-8 Overall) clinched a spot in the CIF-SS Division 3A playoffs, and will host the Costa Mesa-based Estancia High School Eagles (4-6/4th place in Orange Coast League, 9-7 Overall) at Indio High School on Feb. 19.

The Blackhawks (7-5 in DVL,

13-13 Overall) earned a position in the CIF-SS Division 1A playoffs, and will go on the road to take on the Fullerton-based Troy High School Warriors (7-3/2nd place in Freelance League, 17-10 Overall) on Feb. 21

The Saints (7-5 in DVL, 12-11 Overall) clinched a spot in the CIF-SS Division 5AA playoffs and will travel to Los Angeles to take on the Wildwood high School Wolves (6-4/4th place in Coastal League, 13-8 Overall) on Feb. 19.

Short Film “Shoes” Packs Emotional WallopBy Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic, Special for the Desert Star

It ‘s amazing how much emotional wallop can be packed into 18 minutes of creative and powerful filmmaking. The evidence, for example, is on screen at the ten-day, 24th Annual San Diego Jewish Film Festival in La Jolla, CA.

The unique film “Shoes”, written and directed by Ukrainian-born Costa Fam, is one of the fifteen ‘short films’ in the festival that is included in the Joyce Forum special section. The Joyce Forum, founded by San Diego patroness of the arts Joyce Axelroad, is a platform exclusively for the short film format. Short films employ all of the elements and technical skills required of full-length feature films, except that they must say and show what needs to be

accomplished in a “shortened” time frame – usually under one hour. It’s a creative, precise, and highly disciplined format within the motion picture genre, which, by the way, is expressly suited for today’s attention-span challenged younger audiences.

The story of the film “Shoes” is cleverly told without dialogue or seeing the faces of the actors. This unique film approach immediately engages the viewer; drawing them deeper into the story that director Fam wants to tell. “Shoes” is a powerful, yet tenderly crafted movie, that traces a pair of red shoes from their purchase by a young woman just beginning to enjoy the pleasures and dreams that life has to offer. It follows her through her courtship, marriage, childbirth, and the rearing of her children, and ultimately, to the

ovens of Auschwitz. The musical score that

underpins every frame of the film beautifully and emotionally composed by Egor Romanenko (director Fam’s nephew), is a major component in the film. If one parses the on-screen images to the musical score, where each character is represented its own musical instrument or instruments, it becomes an easy way of following the on-screen, non-dialogue action.

For example: the light notes of the flute represent the young couple protagonists. The heavy-handed low notes of the piano coupled with the bass drum, represent the evil villains – the Nazis and all that they imply. The music the other instruments play, perfectly integrate the feelings and the emotions of all the characters. It’s a mini primer on how effective and necessary music is to motion picture filmmaking.

Before the screening began, the audience was treated to a live performance of the film’s score by the 50- piece San Diego Chamber Orchestra under the baton, of Dr. Angela Yeung; Professor of Music, at University of San Diego. She outlined in detail the role of each instrument and how it interacts with the screen images; thus enriching the overall motion picture performance of the film the audience was about to see.

The screening was followed by a Q & A session with director Costa Fam, with simultaneous translation from Russian to English by his wife Irina, a Russian born graduate of the University of San Diego. Fam, admitted that, “every time I see “Shoes”, I see a different aspect of my film.” A question from the audience asked how is the audience to interpret the last scene where an elderly shoeless man is seen walking alone toward the gas chamber? “I purposely left the ending to be one of ambiguity. It’s up to the viewer to read whatever he or she wants to read into the ending.” he responded.

He praised nephew-composer Romanenko for a brilliant musical score, and spoke of a new project that is related to the film, one in which, he is hopeful that one day a copy of this film will become a permanent addition in Holocaust museums all over the world.

If that project comes to fruition, it would truly underscore the oath and the resolve that “Never Again” embodies.
