Drug Vocabulary
1) Drug – A chemical substance that changes
the way the body works.
6 Classes of Drugs
2) Stimulant – A type of drug that speeds up the central nervous system.
3)Depressant – A type of drug that slows down the central nervous system.
4) Hallucinogen – A type of drug that causes the user to hear or see
things that are not real.
5) Inhalants – A substance that is abused by deeply breathing the
fumes it gives off.
6) Narcotics – A group of depressant drugs that
include morphine, opium, and heroin.
7) Marijuana – A mind altering drug that comes
from an Indian hemp plant.
8) Prescription Drug – A medicine that can only
be obtained with a doctor’s note.
9) Over-The-Counter – (OTC) A medicine that can
be bought without a doctor’s note.
10) Dependence – When a person’s body gets so
used to a drug, that they cannot function
normally without it.
11) Withdrawal – A person who is physically dependent on a drug has
to go without it.
12) Tolerance – When a drug no longer has an effect on a person’s body, because their body is so used to the drug.
