Drill Down June 2010Hot and Hazardous How to survive a heat wave

Heat illness is a risk when temperatures rise into the 90s or higher, as they often do in the summer months. Whether working, play-ing sports, or exercising, its easy to push your body too far and suffer the consequences when it gets too hot. To see how severe the

consequences can be, read this account of a real incident of heat- related death from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Pre-vention:

An employee whose job involved working outdoors started his workday at 6 a.m. It was already hot, and it just got hotter. He took ashort break during the morning and a lunch break mid-day. But by mid-afternoon, he was observed working slowly and seemed confused. Co-workers got him out of the heat. Around 4:30, when his condition didnt improve, he was taken by ambulance to ahospital emergency room. His core body temperature was recorded at 108 degrees, and soon after he died from heatstroke.

Heres a simple formula that explains the risk: High temperature

+ High humidity + Physical exertion

    = Heat illness

Your individual risk depends on whether you take proper steps to prevent your bodyfrom overheating. Use this checklist to stay safe in the summer heat.

Do you: Slow down in a heat wave and take breaks to rest and cool down? Stay out of the sunas much as possible? Drink plenty of water all day? Take your physical condition, age,and other risk factors for heat illness into account? Watch for signs of heat stress, including fatigue, headache, dizziness, nausea, and general weakness? Keep an eyeon co-workers for symptoms of heat illness? Report any symptoms immedi-ately to a supervisor? Know first aid for heat illness? Be prepared. A few

simple precautions in a heat wave can prevent illness.

Noah Horn Well Drilling has been requested to comply with the Fire Retardant Clothing policy of CNX/OSHA. Presently, we are requiring only100% cotton clothing and this falls short of the memorandum received by OSHA (29CFR 1910.132) and CNX. We are currently working tobecome in compliance as soon as possible. Below is the new clothing policy for Noah Horn Well Drilling.

NHWD will pay for FRC uniforms to be worn on job sites. All 100% cotton uniforms that are rented through NHWD need to be returned as soon as possible (after receipt of FRC

    clothing).

The only exception to this policy will be for upper management that occasionally visit the sites. They will be issued 3 sets of FRC clothing which they will be required to maintain the up keep of the clothing.

When the FRC clothing is issued, all clothing allowance/payroll deductions will cease. Thank you,
