Drill-and-Practice
In drill-and-practice, the students repeatedly practice a skill or perform a procedure.
25 36 47 58- 4 - 2 - 3 - 5
The teacher has already delivered a lesson on the skill.
Now, the student completes a drill to help her obtain mastery.
Drill-and-practice materials should be simple enough for students to use independently.
An important component of any drill-and-practice material is that it provides feedback which verifies whether a student has answered correctly or not.

Advantages of Drill-and-practice
• Students learn small chunks of information at a time.
• Students practice and review a single concept until mastery.
• Students receive feedback on their answers.
Limitations of Drill-and-practice• It can be boring . Too many
practice exercises can cause students to lose interest
• It is repetitive. Some students need novelty and variety.
• Learning potential - If the student makes mistakes procedurally, he will practice making that mistake over and over again.
The following slides will give examples of ways to integrate Drill-and-practice in the classroom.
Worksheets
• Worksheets are a useful way to integrate drill-and practice in the classroom. After students have received instruction on a concept, students may use a worksheet to practice that skill.

Flashcards• Flashcards are also very
useful in drill-and-practice. A student can be placed with a buddy who has already achieved mastery on a concept. The buddy displays flash cards to the student. The student identifies the content of the card and his buddy verifies the correctness of his answer. Peter Weatherall (Author). (2011). Computer Programs
• Computer programs help students practice skills in a game format. The program may be individualized, identifying specific concepts a student struggles with. Computer programs often provide feedback on the correctness of answers.
