Es ist eine Traumbesetzung. Fnf Musiker, die zur US-amerikanischen Jazz-Elite der mittleren Generation ge-hren. Und die eine immense Referenzenliste vorweisen knnen. Aber nicht mssen, um zu berzeugen. Und mitzu-reien! Hrt man sie in diesen Aufnahmen, wird man sofort gepackt von der Schnheit und Ausdrucksspanne, die mit einer ganz klassischen Besetzung des modernen Jazz mg-lich sind. Trompete, Saxophon, Klavier, Bass und Schlag-zeug wobei hier schon mal zwei Feinheiten zu beachten sind: Das Saxophon ist ein Altsaxophon, kein Tenorsaxo-phon, und der Leader der Band ist der Bassist. Ein Musiker also, der aus der Rhythmusgruppe heraus die Strippen zieht, ist der Boss. Und er hlt hier auf hchst spannende Art alles zusammen: Der 1959 in New Jersey geborene Drew Gress, einer der begehrtesten Jazzbassisten New Yorks, legt hier bei PIROUET ein Album unter eigenem Namen vor, dessen Titel auch das Programm dieser Auf-nahmen sein knnte: The Sky Inside. Ein innerer Himmel tut sich wirklich auf in den Aufnahmen dieser CD es sind durchweg Eigenkompositionen von Drew Gress, und sie stecken einen weiten Horizont der Klangeindrcke und Stimmungen ab. Gress, ein groartiger Musiker, der bei dem Label PIROUET schon in diversen erfolgreichen Produktionen mitgespielt hat etwa als Fels in der Bran-dung in Ensembles von Marc Copland, Tim Hagans und Bill Carrothers kann hier sein eigenes Profil als Leader und Komponist zeigen: Es ist ein starkes und markantes Profil.

Die Besetzung ist eine, die nicht von ungefhr kommt. Aus inneren Kreisen der New Yorker Szene hat Gress sich diese Fnferbande zusammengestellt. Mit dabei sind zunchst zwei Partner, mit denen Drew Gress schon Ende der 1990er Jahre ein Trio bildete: Saxophonist Tim Berne (geboren 1954) und Schlagzeuger Tom Rainey (geboren 1957); zusammen nannten sie sich Paraphrase. Auch mit Trompeter Ralph Alessi (geboren 1963) hat Gress immer wieder in unterschiedlichen Projekten zusammengearbei-tet, Gress ist auch Mitglied eines hochkartigen Quintetts, das Alessi und der Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane gemeinsam leiten. Craig Taborn (geboren 1970), der in den letzten Jah-ren vom Fachmagazin Down Beat besonders gefeiert wur-de, hatte 2001 schon mit Tim Berne zusammengearbeitet und taucht seit 2003 auch in Aufnahmen mit Gress auf. Musiker, die einander vertraut sind und die auf hchstem internationalen Jazzniveau seit vielen Jahren zu den gefrag-testen Vertretern ihres Instruments gehren.

Das alles wre nur groes Kapital, aber noch keine Garantie fr hchste Qualitt. Doch die steht auer Frage, wenn man die Ergebnisse hrt. Die Ergebnisse und nicht das Ergebnis: Denn die Stcke auf dieser CD sind hchst un-terschiedlich auch wenn sie insgesamt wie aus einem Guss wirken und eine organische Einheit bilden. Doch Drew Gress schafft es, die Zuhrer hier immer wieder mit neuen Farben zu berraschen. Das Stck No Saint etwa verbohrt

Die Kunst des gleichen Atems

Sonst legt er fr andere das Fundament. Hier fr die eigenen Stcke: Der groe Bassist Drew Gress prsentiert in hochkartiger Quintettbesetzung mit Ralph Alessi, Tim Berne, Craig Taborn und Tom Rainey eine Pirouet-CD als Leader. The Sky Inside: Der Titel ist Programm. Ein weiter musikalischer Himmel eines feinen Introvertierten tut sich auf.

Long Story zu: Wie ein hitziges Streitgesprch zwischen den Instrumenten wirkt dieses Stck, das sich immer mehr verdichtet. Ganz anders spter das Geschwisterstck zu dieser Komposition: Long Story Short lang angehaltene Blsertne, die sich in sperrig berlagerten Intervallen in den Raum spreizen, kennzeichnen hier die Stimmung.

Sobald man die musikalische Welt dieser CD zu kennen glaubt, wird man hier gleich aufs Neue verblfft. Denn alle Stcke nehmen in ihrer Atmosphre und dann auch in ih-rem Verlauf stets Wege, die man nach dem jeweils vorher-gehenden so nicht erwartet hatte. Da ist die gewitzt ein-gngige Melodik des Stcks Kernel, natrlich unterfttert von kleinen Verfremdungen, da begegnet man melancho-

sich zunchst in einen sperrigen Groove von Bass und Kla-vier, der mit eingngigen Blserkantilenen berlagert wird und sich dann allmhlich auflst in eine tastende und su-chende Bewegung im Raum, die immer wilder wird und dann den ursprnglichen Groove in kraftvoll aufgeladener Form wiederfindet. Bei dem Stck In Streamline heben das Altsax und die Trompete zu melancholischen Gesngen an, in denen ihr Sound sich nicht nur reizvoll ineinander blen-det, sondern auch noch fast zu einem einzigen Klang ver-schmilzt: Wie eine Traumsequenz wirkt dieses Stck, das mit leisen Erzhlungen am Klavier und ungemein zarten Schlagzeug-Akzenten weitergeht. Richtig rau, mit schmir-gelndem Trompetensound, und in kantiger Kontrapunktik zwischen Klavier und Saxophon, geht es dann in dem Stck

lisch verhangenen Linien in Dreampop, da verfolgt man staunend die eckig-sprunghaften Motiv-Verschiebungen und raffinierten Groove-Verzgerungen in dem forsch aus-schreitenden und dann nach kurzer Dauer auf einer ganz stillen Klanginsel landenden stck Jacquard, da versenkt man sich in den leisen, manchmal fast geruschpoetischen Feinstrukturen von Delve und wundert sich ber den Titel und die quirlig-kompakte Action von Zaftig Redux. Und zappt dann vielleicht wieder zum Titelstck zurck: The Sky Inside: Hhenerkundungen der beiden Blas-Instrumente mit langen, einander umspielenden Tnen, die dann allmh-lich einen Rhythmus und ein wunderschnes, aber wie in verfremdeten Filmszenen gedehntes und klanglich in sich selbst verhallendes Thema finden, um dann bald wieder die Strukturen aufzulsen und nach neuen Klang-Partikeln zu suchen, die bald kompakt und komplex ineinander spielen und spter auf ganz eigene und eigenwillige Art losgrooven. The Sky Inside ist nicht nur das Titelstck dieser CD, sondern auch das Kernstck. Und seine Botschaft knnte lauten: Auch der innere Horizont ist weiter und berra-schender, als man denkt.

In allen Stcken ist stndig die Band als Ganzes gefordert. Es gehen viele fr den Hrer unvorhersehbare Bewegungen vonstatten, die von der ganzen Band vollzogen werden. Das Tempo wird immer wieder in flieender Bewegung von allen gemeinsam verndert das hrt sich an, als wrden alle fnf Musiker gemeinsam atmen. Lauter Kunstwerke des organischen Zusammenhalts sind diese Stcke. Und doch hat man in ihnen immer wieder auch den Raum, um die Glanzleistungen der einzelnen Musiker zu bewundern: diejenigen von den Blsern oft in gegenseitiger Verschrn-kung, die von Pianist Craig Taborn in herrlichen Soli und Interplay-Momenten, in denen der Musiker eine expressive Feinheit ohne jeden Zierrat ausleben kann, vom Schlagzeu-ger in vielen kleinen, leisen und umso intensiveren Momen-ten und, last but not least, auch vom Bandleader selbst, der seinen kraftvollen Ton in allen Lagen pulsieren und singen lsst, mit sattem Volumen und packender rhythmi-scher Przision Fundamente legt und als so feinfhliger wie klangvoller Spieler von Soli das Niveau fr die anderen vorgibt. Tiefe Tne, hohe Messlatte. Von einem eher selte-nen, aber dafr sprbar starken Bandleader. All das schlgt sich hier nieder: in facettenreichen, atmosphrisch dichten Stcken und einem Zusammenspiel von einer Selbstver-stndlichkeit, wie sie nur eine Besetzung dieser Qualitt haben kann. Eben eine Traumbesetzung.

1959 in Pennsylvania geboren, machte sich Drew Gress Mitte der achtziger Jahre schnell in der New Yorker Jazzszene einen Namen. Mit dem mit Phil Haynes, Ellery Eskelin und Paul Smoker gefhrten Joint Venture-Quartet verffentlichte er mehrere Alben und grndete 1998 sein eigenes Quartett Jagged Sky als Leader. Its a dream group. Five musicians who have worked with the major players in jazz and in the process have them-selves become a part of Americas jazz elite. On listening to this recording you are immediately taken by the beauty and expressive depth of this classic modern jazz lineuptrum-pet, saxophone, piano, bass, and drumsnotice that its alto saxophone rather than tenor saxophone, and the lead-er is the bassist. In other words, a musician out of the rhythm section pulls the strings. And hes the one that holds it all together. Drew Gress was born in 1959 in New Jersey, and is one of the most sought-after bassist on the New York scene. The title of his Pirouet album is The Sky Inside; it could also be the program for this recording. The compositions are Drew Gress own, and they stake out a wide horizon of sound impressions and atmospherics. Gress has already played on a diversity of Pirouet produc-tions. His rock-solid play has anchored the groups of Marc Copland, Tim Hagans, and Bill Carrothers. Here he reveals his own strong, prominent profile as composer and leader. Assembling this group wasnt an accident. Gress brought these five together out of the New York jazz scenes inner circle. Two of the players are partners with Drew in a trio formed at the end of the 1990s: saxophonist Tim Berne (born in 1954), and drummer Tom Rainey (born in 1957). They named the group Paraphrase. Gress has also worked

with trumpeter Ralph Alessi (born in 1963) over the years on a variety of projects. Gress is also the bassist in the star-studded quintet co-lead by Alessi and saxophonist Ravi Coltrane. Pianist Craig Taborn (born in 1970) has received kudos in Downbeat over the last years. He had already worked with Tim Berne in 2001, and has appeared with Gress on a number of recordings. These are musicians who have a mutual trust, musicians who belong to the high-est level of international jazz, and are among of the most in-demand players on their respective instruments.

That all sounds great, but still no quality guarantee. How-ever, once you hear the results, there are no longer any questions of quality. Here is an abundance of moods as Drew Gress continually surprises the listener with new tex-tures. At first, No Saint buries itself in an unwieldy bass and piano groove that is overlaid with catchy horn phrases, gradually dissolving in a tentative, searching movement that becomes wilder and wilder, then returning to the origi-nal groove, this time in a powerful, highly charged form. In Streamline the alto sax and trumpet begin with melancholy chants. Their sounds are so beautifully blended that they seem to meld into one. The piece works like a dream se-quence, continuing with quiet narratives from the piano ac-companied by delicate drum accents. Long Story is raw,

Normally he lays the foundation for others. Here he sets the groundwork for his own compositions. For his Pirouet CD, The Sky Inside the exceptional bassist Drew Gress has assembled a first-class quintet with Ralph Alessi, Tim Berne, Craig Taborn and Tom Rainey; the title is programmatic, unveiling the next musical open spaces of a discerning introvert.

and then are astounded by the tangential-angular motif displacements and refinement as the groove slows down and crisply steps out. Having landed on a sound-island of a piece in Jacquard, a short time later you find yourself lost in the soft, finely structured poetic sounds of Delve, and then ponder the title and the exuberantly compact action on Zaftig Redux. And then back to the title pieceThe Sky Inside: the two horns reconnoiter with long, interlacing tones. Gradually, a rhythm and a beautiful drawled-out theme seem to fall back into themselves, as if its a scene out of some bizarre film. Then the music seeks out new sound fragments which quickly resolve in a com-plex, compact interplay, ending in a unique, loose groove.

with a grinding trumpet sound and a chiseled counterpoint between piano and saxophone. The piece is a heated argu-ment between the instruments. Its sister work, Long Story Short is completely differentthe mood is defined by long-held horn notes that splay out through the room in heavy superimposed intervals.

As soon as you think you know this CDs musical world something new pops up to amaze. The pieces continually take unexpected moves in their atmosphere and deve- lopment. There are the humorous beginning melodics of Kernel, naturally underlaid with subtle colorations. You meet up with the melancholy veiled lines of Dreampop,

The Sky Inside is not only the title piece; its the core. And its message could be: the inner horizon is wider and more surprising than you think. In all the pieces the band is continually challenged as a group, and it confronts the lis-tener with a host of unpredictable moments. Again and again the group changes tempo in flowing movements as if the five musicians breathed with one breath. The pieces are pure works of organic artistic cohesion, and yet the listener has the space to admire the masterful creativity of the individual musiciansthe interconnection between the horns, Pianist Craig Taborns superb solos and moments of interplay in which the musicians can play out unadorned

expressive subtleties. From the drummer, there are the many unpretentious, low-keyed moments and times of driving intensity. And then there is the bandleader himself; his strong tone pulsates and sings on every level as he lays down the foundation with such a rich tone and gripping rhythmic precision. With his subtle, melodic solos, Drew Gress sets the example for the other players: deep tones, high standards. Multifaceted, atmospherically luxuriant pieces are wedded to the sort of implicit teamwork that only a lineup of this quality has. Put simply, its a dream lineup.

Born in Yardley, Pennsylvania in 1959, bassist/composer Drew Gress performs extensively with artists on the cut-ting edge of contemporary improvised music. In the mid-1980s, he quickly established his reputation in the New York jazz scene. Gress, along with Phil Haynes, Ellery Eskelin, and Paul Smoker, formed the Joint Venture-Quartet, which, along with its success, produced several albums over the following years. In 1998 Gress founded his own quartet, Jagged Sky.
