The intention of this AUGS democratic structure model is to ensure a consistent flow of high

quality and relevant motions/policy proposals being

put forward to direct the direction of AUGS.

- - - - - - - - - - - -Much greater emphasis is placed on the Executive Committee to

gather information/data/opinion to form policy for consideration

at the Guild Assembly- - - - - - - - - - - -

The Guild Assembly would consist of representatives of the

Guild’s different engagement forums/council/executives and a randomly selected group of 15

students who would be invited to attend.

- - - - - - - - - - - -AUGS will still have to hold an AGM once a year and ideally a further open meeting once a

semester.

GMs Are Not Democratic | TBC

This GM Notes:

1. General Meetings (GMs) have for a long time been the main-stay of Aberystwyth University Guild of Students’ democratic engagement with students.

2. Many Students’ Unions and Guilds across the country have moved away from the GM model.

3. Traditionally, turn-out at GMs has been low and therefore, unrepresentative of the turn opinions of Aberystwyth University students.

4. Turn-out at the GM held on 8th November 2011 was historically high, but still only accounted for approximately 3.0 % of the student population.

This GM Believes:

1. It is undemocratic to mandate (force) representatives of Sports Clubs and Societies to attend GMs, and in fact, makes for a poor model of democratic engagement.

2. To ensure that the Guild maintains its relevance to the life of students at Aberystwyth University, it must endeavour to truly represent the opinions of students.

3. That GMs, as they stand, do not allow for the engagement of all students at Aberystwyth University and do not engage effectively with postgraduate students, mature students, students with dependants, part-time students, distance learners and ethnic minorities.

This GM Resolves:

1. To move away from the current 1980’s model of student engagement via GMs, and toward a ‘Guild Assembly’ model.

2. To mandate the Guild President to coordinate the Guild Executive to engage with all students in the production of a ‘Guild Assembly’ model.

3. To mandate the Guild President to bring a motion to approve proposed amendments to the Constitution of the Aberystwyth University Guild of Students accordingly to the next GM; this would be ratified by a subsequent referendum of students.

4. That representation of students is the most fundamental role of the Aberystwyth University Guild of Students and always should be.
