AREA OF EXPERTISE
Key teaching areas include courses focused on second language learning, English learners
and the utilization of visual literacy, scaffolding strategies, multimodal learning, the fine arts,
exploring with Vygotsky’s and Dr. Kristin Gutierrez’s concepts of rendering in the third space with
English Learners and the impact of the fine arts in early childhood programs and elementary classrooms.
In addition, the integration of multicultural children’s literature and working with pre-service
teachers interested in teaching in the primary and elementary grades. Research interests
include qualitative research in urban settings with an emphasis in academic vocabulary and
integrating the arts across the curriculum. The importance of utilizing different forms of
scaffolding strategies and the impact the fine arts has on the social, emotional and educational
growth of children and English learners. In addition, the impact and importance for art
educators to examine classroom teaching practices and gain knowledge associated with
English learners and the manner they learn best in. This includes children with learning
differences that require a wide spectrum of visual literacies and the arts to support the
development of their language, reading and writing skills.
