thumbs up to HARSH PENALTIES FOR SCHOOLS HIKING FEES wITHOUT APPROVAL

thumbs down to NO OPPORTUNITIES FOR JOURNALISm GRAD STUDENTS

Private or International schools that increase fees without approval of the Ministry of Education will facesevere penalties. Violating schools must return the extra amount to guardians and pay a fine of SR 5,000 for each violation. If the school repeats the violation, it will be banned from increasing fees for two academic years. Guardians of the students can file complaints at the website of the Ministry of Education (www.moe.gov.sa) if school authorities hike tuition fees other than the approved rate by the ministry. A total of 3,940 private schools in the Kingdom requested to increase tuition, but the ministry approved only 21 percent of the requests.

Women graduates of Journalism from Jazan University are demanding job opportunities or the suspension of women’s enrollment in journalism. These women received their degrees more than three years ago and are still unemployed. Many graduates questioned the journalism department, since many of them are unable to find jobs. Around 200 students graduate from the journalism department every year. Graduates applied to newspapers and are turned down because there are no vacancies. These graduates called on Jazan University officials to stop accepting students into the journalism department if they can’t provide jobs to at least 50 percent of them.

PARTNERING SAUDI CREATIVITY with business sense at Al Khozama Exhibition

Ramadan nights have become a time for Riyadhis to enjoy seasonal events across the city. On its debut, the Al Khozama Fashion Art and Design Exhibition proved to be a must-visit gathering of over a 100 Saudi entrepreneurs, artists and artisans from all over the Kingdom.

The exhibit runs through Aug. 2 at the Al Khozama Banqueting and Exhibition Center. In partnership Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities and organized by Amal Al Jibreen and Associates (AJA), the event aimed to highlight Riyadh as the primary fashion and arts destination in the region.

Guests discovered emerging talents and enjoyed a unique shopping experience from each of the local brands participating. Moreover, the

event also allowed for cultural exchange with selected booths showcasing regional heritage. The Japanese Embassy also shared snippets of their country’s traditions that were well received by locals.

In addition, the exhibitors were eligible to vie for the Bandar Al Jibreen Achievement award. In its third cycle, the award aims to recognize the talents especially in the field of Arts and creative design. Amal Al Jibreen, founder

and CEO of AJA, initiated the Award as a continuation of her father’s legacy, the late Sheikh Bandar Al Jibreen.

This year’s theme is “White Piece,” which each participant must reflect in his or her work during the exhibition. A panel of distinguished judges comprising prominent artists, business leaders, educators and selected organizers then visited each booth and determined the winners based on a set criteria.

crate creates platform for local retailersBy Ahmed Almansouri

Alāan Artspace, a contemporary art gallery, launched its latest initiative “Crate.” Crate offers a platform for Saudi designers and merchants, from emerging and established to local and international, who do not have stand-alone stores or boutiques. They displayed and sold their products over a three-week period in July.

Every week a different set of designers showcase their products. Mashael bin Jumah, a fashion event planner, was the organizer behind Crate.

The rotating style schedule for Crate allows the public to enjoy a diverse collection of jewelry, abayas, bags, books and other products.

Week 1 participants included brands like Nora Al Shaikh, Butterfly Abayas, Al Maha Dressy Jalabiya, Universal Publisher, Auras Jewelry, Noufz Eleganze and Reesha. It was quite a diverse group of designers. Many don’t know this, but most of these designers actually know each other and are all involved in the fashion scene.

“We love the intimate setting of Crate,” said Dalal, head designer of Al Maha Dressy Jalabiya. “I get to really connect with my guests and I'm friends with the other participants.”

Besides designing for Al Maha, Dalal runs entrepreneurship projects that trains victims of abuse and impoverished women and makes them dresses. She provides the material and equipment etc.

What makes Crate stand out from other art platforms is its intimacy and the greater connection between the public and designers. It could also be considered a networking or social event in some ways.

Week 2 participants include Fyunka, Kursi, Blends, Sister I Don’t Have, Madawi, Red Squared, Sara Albenayan, Tamashee and Lovin’ My Bags.

“I was approached by Alāan Artspace and I thought it was a great opportunity,” said Alaa Balky, founder and designer of Fyunka.

Fyunka was born three years ago and is a brand influenced by pop culture.

Sara Albanayan, founder of Sara Albanayan abayas and sunglasses, does not like the concept of a bazaar and prefers something that has an artistic sense like Crate. Sara Albanayan has been operating for two months now brings a new theme to her abayas in every pop-up shop she appears in.

“My abayas are Ramadan-themed to go along with the holy month. Every pop-up shop you see me in, I will have a completely different theme to my abayas,” said Sara.

Week 3 participants include Amal Algoblan, A Sister I Don’t Have, Loomer Jewelry, Rashmah, Haifa Fahad, Khloud Al Ajaji, Storehouse 22, Azraar, Jamila Couture and Tee Saudi.

Alāan Artspace is dedicated to nurturing emerging and established contemporary artists and designers from Saudi Arabia, the region and across the globe. Alāan – which means “now” in Arabic – reflects the energy of the art scene in Saudi Arabia and the feeling in Riyadh that a space such as this is long overdue.

DESTINATION RIYADH 19

In Riyadh, we’re proud to say that generosity and charity are two things you would stumble upon at every turn. It’s not just because we’re home to a handful of prominent philanthropists; but most importantly, we have a community of ordinary people who decide day in and day out to do extraordinary things for others.

And so goes the story of Sahar Hashani, director of Education and Educational Development at the Disabled Children’s Association (DCA). For 28 years, Sahar rose through the ranks of DCA not as a career choice but as an answer to the call to serve the children that she has grown to love.

Hashani started her career as a social worker. Her exposure to welfare cases and most especially to the predicaments of children with disabilities and their families influenced her to align herself with their cause.

When the DCA was established in 1986, Hashani was one of the very first trained teachers in the organization. It was a job she fell in love with the moment she started. She fondly recalls her days in the classroom,

“Everyday when I went to class, my goal was to make my students happy,” Hashani said. “For me, being a teacher to disabled children, it is not only about teaching. Inside (referring to the classroom), you get the chance to give them attention, to make them feel loved and cared for.”

During the first few years of the DCA, Hashani admits that the information and sources were limited for educators of children with special needs in the Kingdom. The organization did their best by inviting specialists from Sweden to work side by side its staff. However, whatever was lacking in methodology, the team made up for with something far more important:

“Before you can do anything for them, you need to have one thing first—A connection,” Hashani said. “Every child has a different situation, level of disability, a different way of learning. If you are able to connect to them and they trust you only then can you create something for them that would fit their needs.”

It was this close connection with her students that made Sahar reluctant to take on a leadership role in the organization. She shares with us,

“I felt being in administration means being in the office all the time, I won’t be with the children. But my boss back then, Farid Al Khayal insisted that this was a chance to do more for them,” she said. “It took me a day and doing Istikhara first before I finally took the job.”

Indeed, when Hashani took her management seat, she saw it as an opportunity to further lobby the position of disabled children in the educational system. A priority in her agenda was to initiate

“Before you can do anything for them,

you need to have one thing first—A

connection.” — Sahar Hashani

DESTINATION RIYADH20

the integration of children in national schools.

It’s no easy task to create change especially when it comes to issues that are acknowledged but have yet to be discerned and addressed in society. However, Hashani had a fiery gusto of a woman on a mission and did not stop until her case was heard.

She approached Prince Sultan bin Salman, chairman of the Disabled Children’s Association, with her case and a request to form an integration committee. Fortunately, Prince Sultan who is a longtime advocate of children with special needs gave his full support on the endeavor.

This was a big win in Sahar’s journey to make education accessible to all but it did not necessarily go through with some resistance.

“It has never been done (integration in schools) and of course you had people who were against the idea,” she said. “They were worried about all kinds of things —bullying, teachers, resources. We listened, took their reasons into our planning but it never changed my mind. Education is a right, for everyone.”

In the following years, Hashani and DCA coordinated with the Ministry of Education (MOE) to create a programs and guidelines for children with

special needs. The special needs program is now part of the MOE’s five-year strategic plan.

She humbly emphasized how it was the efforts of the staff, coordinators like Amal Aman and Mahaa Al Said who devoted their time and energy to make things happen.

Flash forward to today; Sahar’s expression was gleaming with pride as she tells us, “We have four students who are now moving from the 9th to 10th grade. Imagine, children with severe physical disabilities. People thought they couldn’t do it but here we are having a graduation party for them.”

Milestones like these fuel Sahar and the people at DCA to keep on doing what they do. There is now a mandate by MOE requiring public schools to accept disabled children. There is even an engineering team that can be called in should a school need to have their facilities built to accommodate these students.

DCA also pioneered the development of the national

Page 23: Dr Issue 18

DESTINATION RIYADH 21

curricula for the education of children with disabilities in collaboration with AGFUND.

And yet, Hashani is far from being done, she is now spearheading the development of an automated system for SPED teachers. Once completed, the system would consolidate the information and teaching methods into a centralized program.

To this day you would still see Hashani visiting the classrooms and even volunteering in the front lines from time to time. It, according to her, keeps her grounded and shares with us one of the most important nuggets of wisdom she had acquired over the years;

“Kids today complain they’re bored. Us (adults), we worry and worry, we get stressed

with everything,” Hashani said. “These children, the simplest things are hard for them. But you’ll still see them smiling. You don’t see them whining and giving up, so why should you? Put your worries and your boredom beside what they go through everyday. Your problems are really much smaller.”

In the mornings we spent with Hashani, I found myself inspired by her journey and the anecdotes of her often witty, funny and absolutely heartwarming children. It reaffirms my belief that Riyadh is filled with wonderfully good people with stories to tell, if we’d only take time to listen.

“They were worried about all kinds of things — bullying, teachers, resources. We listened, took their reasons into our planning but it never changed my mind, education is a right, for everyone.”

By Jou PabalateThere comes a time in a students life when the question “What do you want to be when you’re all grown up?” becomes all too real. Deciding what career or job you would like to have isn’t easy, so if you’re confused, that’s actually pretty normal. In the past few months, students have approached us for career counseling. It’s not exactly our niche but we’re pretty good at making other folks answer questions. So, we’ve decided to show you what the work jungle is like through the eyes of Saudis who are in their own way, going after their dreams.

The Princess Nora University, that palatial estate for academic pursuits. PNU is a mystery with its extra tight security that keeps outsiders at a far distance. We’ve solved that by enlisting our very own insider, Nada Megbil (she lives inside the biggest university in the Kingdom and confirms, it’s awesome).

We were one of the first families to move on to the campus. It was like living in an ghost town, with too many apartment buildings that yearned for inhabitants. A month later, we could start hearing the families rolling in their suitcases and stacking up their boxes, moving into their new homes. And after a while, kids were popping up everywhere and it started to feel like the active, friendly environment it was designed for.

The apartment seemed to be built and furnished just for us with the exact number of bedrooms we needed and more than enough bathrooms.

There’s one cozy living room and another more formal one, even a room only containing a dinner table for if we ever felt in the mood to swallow pizzas in a fashionable manner. Every room has a floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the grassy layout in between campus buildings, where every afternoon all the neighborhood’s little boys meet for hours of kicking a worn-out ball around while the little girls chase each other, hiding behind the palm trees that line the park.

The interior design is a crossbreed of modernism and simplicity. It gives off a stunning mixture of colors from the beige walls to the sleek wooden closets to the vibrant paintings.

Family dorms come with a considerate number of gadgets to spice up our daily lives. A small clinic is just around the block, literally. It hasn’t opened yet, but in a few years I could see it meaning a lot to anxious parents. What really surprised

me was the mini-mart next to the little mosque in the core of the neighborhood, which has an infinite supply of day-to-day groceries. The friendly workers there store everything from fresh vegetables to cosmetics and school supplies. They even have a Little Caesars pizza stand at the entrance of the store, dry cleaners, and a cozy bakery in the back that permeates the market with the aroma of vanilla icing. I don’t know if it’s a good thing that my every craving is fulfilled with a quick drop by the mini-mart.

Outside the campus dormitories, you can get a cheap membership at the luxurious gym. PNU’s gym is filled up to the neck with dozens of options indoors and out for healthy exercising. The first aspect you notice when you take a giddy step inside is the multi-colored rock-climbing wall. The bottom floor holds the wide pool and hot tub. Trainers are willing to sit down with you and explain your daily exercise routines to help you.

In the changing rooms, there is a wooden sauna room for ultimate relaxation and stress-relief. The gym holds a huge variety of different courts and fields such as basketball, soccer, volleyball and tennis. And you can’t forget about the dance rooms used for classes taken by future So You Think You Can Dance contestants. Are they sometimes used by me to bring my inner hip-hop queen out? You will never know. This gym doesn’t only help you take care of your

body but also overwhelms you with all the choices of how.

When you feel in the mood to pick up a book, you can always pass-by the Arabian designed central digital library containing 2 million books with a total capacity of 5 million. It’s painted with warm colors, creating comfortable atmosphere. And if you stand on the bottom floor and glance upwards you’ll see different reflections of light bouncing off the glass-rimmed walls.

The university hospital holds 700 beds, owning the title of being the largest simulation center in the entirety of the Middle East. It offers free medical care for all ID-holding members of the university.

The Grand Mosque is beautifully designed from the exterior as well as the interior. All the men are seen dressed nicely, every Friday, as they make their way to the mosque.

Then we have the much talked about PNU metro. It uses AnsaldoBreda Driverless Metro technology, encompassing 22 trains in all. The metro is automated to pass by 14 stations to pick up students and academic staff members everyday.

Princess Nora University is an eco-friendly, green campus. It hosts water recycling plant and a solar thermal plant. There are 4000 square meters of Solar Panels surrounding the campus, and they provide the need for 18 percent of air-conditioning and 16 percent of heating.

The neighbors are extra friendly and we are all well acquainted. The metro gives us easy entrance to the colleges themselves, the nurseries and schools are great for busy mothers, and the mosques are there as a great respite to pray to Allah and allow us all to pray together in harmony.

The campus is so well thought out it’s as if it was meant to be a little city of its own. Families are seen bicycling in the middle of the night, running to the grocery store for an extra carton of milk or picnicking on the green fields. Everything we need is within our reach and that’s something to say in a big, busy city like riyadh.

Architecture tends to consciously and unconsciously shape cities. It can be an asset in representing the identity of the city and its traditions, or push for the complete opposite. Riyadh itself is experiencing an exciting time for all architecture enthusiasts out there, as a new current of architectural works is approaching to dynamically shift the market and challenge new possibilities.

If someone were to come back to Riyadh after living a few years abroad, they’d be surprised at the changes, starting with the hard-to-miss skyline that is forming the capital city. Riyadh is known for its huge horizontal urban expansion, and the newest addition, a family of skyscrapers, is now aiming to visually connect the city with the skies vertically as well. This family of skyscrapers belongs to a rapid development that took its place on a 1.6 million-square-meter land at the intersection of three main highways: King Fahd, North Ring and Al Thumamah roads.

King Abdullah Financial District, owned by the Public Pension Agency (PPA), is a prestigious urban hub that mainly sets itself as a financial center on both regional and international scales, and in the same time stands as a community and social vibrant attraction for neighboring Saudis.

On a site visit to KAFD, we were fortunate enough to meet a team of architects and engineers from the project and given a firsthand experience of the project. We were shown a scaled master plan model of KAFD that introduced us to the different types of zones and layers the project includes, and of course, to the architectural excellence of the various buildings. The district accommodates business towers and their facilities, schools, seven mosques, an aquarium, a convention center/metro station, museums like the built environment museum and science museum residential quarters (which

form 20 percent of the district’s buildings, including three five-star hotels and apartment buildings), social and recreational venues like Al Wadi park, and several transportation options.

The type of movement that is planned for the project is a dynamic one, including movements of: pedestrians, monorails, skywalks, cars and metros. The buildings are internally connected via skywalks that easily help their users move from one neighboring building to another. The interesting fact about this project is that, unlike other districts in Riyadh, this one is actually open to the public at all times without any trouble of inaccessibility. Security is insured by the prevention of any car parking on the ground floor and only allowing drop-offs. Special visitor’s parking buildings are also provided, but for a fee.

One of the most anticipated buildings is the easily visible convention center designed by

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM). The design is intended to symbolize an organic extension of the desert, a building that grows angularly from the natural terrain of the desert. The building accommodates flexible conference rooms, a banquet hall, an auditorium with cinema support, and a “digital forum” for all venues taking place.

Interestingly, SOM designed the building for the metro to pass through smoothly. The building trussed roof allows a great deal of natural light alterations into its interiors, as well as the provision of indigenous desert plants planted on the roof top to mediate the interior microclimate and reduce the cooling loads on the building.

Overall, the project is an immense one, and we’re quite optimistic for the direction architecture is taking in Riyadh. The more well designed buildings there are, the merrier!

Back to school season is in full swing as schools

are opening soon. Everybody is usually nervous on their

first day. The word “school” seems intimidating after

long vacations wondering what kind of new teacher

you will get or will your friends be in the same class.

These are all frightening thoughts, but you can

totally pull off the first day by following few simple tips to make a good impression,

feel good and fight the first day jitters.

By Nisma Rafiq

Ways to Feel

Good on Your

First Day of School

5 1 Sleep WellWith Ramadan and long summer days, everyone’s sleep cycle has been disturbed. Make sure you get back into the habit of sleeping early at least one week before schools open or else you’ll feel drowsy on your first day.

2 pRepaRe WellDo some reading and writing prior to school opening. It will help you get familiar with new course books. Try your new uniform and all the stuff you have bought before going back to school. You’ll know if you are comfortable with the school outfit. Iron the uniform, keep your socks, accessories and bags packed from the night before. This arrangement will prevent panic while keeping you calm and prepared for the big day.

3 DReSS WellMake sure your uniform is tidy and nicely ironed. Select a new, decent and neat hairstyle. Boys can pick up a wristwatch whereas girls can go for a piece of jewelry like ear top to show personal style. Research has proved that dressing well boosts confidence, which is a necessity to make a great impression.

4 eaT WellKnow that first day will feel longer because you will be experiencing new stuff and meeting new faces. Have a healthy breakfast as it will provide you with the refreshing energy which you’ll need the whole day. You will be surprised knowing how much happier and focused you will be after having something to eat in the morning. Take money for lunch or ask your mother to make you a special lunch, which can be shared with new and old friends.

5 SMIle aND SHINePromise yourself that you’ll try your best to have a good time and that you will perform better in your studies than last year. Smile and be friendly. It will enhance your confidence and will help others to approach you. Be positive and welcome the new experience. Make new friends and respect your teachers; they are nervous as well.

cReaTING aN eNVIRONMeNTSome children like to study alone and some prefer studying in small groups. Creating the right environment will be useful in managing time and to help the child focus on a certain activity.

pROVIDING TOOlSChoosing and providing tools that suit the child’s learning style can save time. Different methods such as visual, kinesthetic and auditory are used for teaching and at times a mixture of these is effective. These days educational touch screenssuch as Leap Pad are commonly used as they appeal to the young learners.

Every child has a different learning method. We can’t expect all children to learn in the same way. And for the right learning environment it is imperative to help them manage their time effectively so they can achieve maximum results. Parents and children can work together so the child does not feel rushed or stressed. Here are a few tips to help children manage their time more effectively.

By Zareen MuzaffarTIMeMANAGEMENT

cReaTING a lIST To help the child focus it’s always better to create a list of items that needs to be completed. Making a list will also make it easier for parents. You can set a timer for a certain task, mark your calendar, or set a reminder on phone so that assignments or important tasks are not forgotten.

HOMeWORK TIMe Scheduling a time for homework and setting few hours aside each day will help children allocate time for other creative activities too. If homework time isn’t scheduled they might end up scrambling to finish it at the last minute.

MaNaGING Sleep HOURS It’s not just nutritious foods that help children feel energetic; it’s about getting an adequate amount of sleep every night as well. Children who sleep late or get less sleep are prone to feeling exhausted and are unable to focus in school.

“ But where else can I put them in? ” Is usually uttered in the end, and that was the only way a person could get information. The founders of Riyadh School Guide decided to change that. Users are encouraged to rate and review a school according to their personal experiences, and summaries are listed underneath each educational center to provide a one-stop site for parents.

Now the question is how you all dear parents can play part in helping kids reach higher academic success? How can you prepare your kids to fulfill your expectations? Do you plan on visiting the school every week and ask teachers to pay special attention to your kid only? There are many parents who believe that keeping their child busy in school and later in activity centers will be enough to get a good result at the end of the year. To an extent, yes it might help. But in reality, your kid is a human being just like you. “All work and no play make jack a dull boy.” Of course you don’t want that. So, what to do?Research shows that students whose parents are involved in their studies and schooling perform better in addition to having high career and educational goals. Parents’ involvement can make a difference in their child’s education as well as their personality.

Summer winds are down and the school bell is going to ring pretty soon. It’s hard for kids to make the transition from those fun-packed times to busy school routine. Going back to school is stressful for kids of all ages, but it is a tense time for parents as well. Parents’ responsibilities and expectations are doubled during the school time. Every parent wants their kid to succeed better than the last term. They have to manage their kids as well as their own anxiety.

Swalah, a working mother of two believes that spending more time with her child has improved their performance at school. “I teach my 7-year-old daughter every day; I always take time out to pick her up from school and ask her about her day. We have a special bond between us.”Sarah Radhwan, a mother of two pharmacists and a doctor, told Destination that she has always taken special interest in her kids’ studies. “Even if they were out of country for studies; I talked with them every day to know what’s going on in their life. It is very important for a child to know that their parents care.”

Parents are the role models for their kids. Their attitude towards learning inspires them and helps them take a right start in their educational journey. As a first teacher it is their responsibility to make them learn and love education. Pay attention to child interests. Know what he or she loves. Does he have interest in toys

or technology? Is she talkative or shy? Learn and explore the child’s interest.“As a mother; I take of report of their day and guide them in studies,” said Amina Farooqui, a mother of three and teacher for the past 25 years. “We share problems and solve them together. I sometimes check their bags and cell phones in their absence. As a teacher I believe parents should be involved in their children’s studies, because it’s the natural law that Allah gives birth to a child in the laps of mothers. Parents are the primary teachers.Napoleon said, 'give me the best mothers, I will give you the best nation. They know thier nature so they can guide them well.' ”

Instead of having hard and fast rules in house and visiting school meetings, research suggests that investing large amount of time with kids has a greater impact on student’s educational outcomes.

• Read and connect with your child. Tell them a story; read aloud together, help them with new words and especially the first two chapters of every book as these have new terms and difficult plot. It will enhance their understanding and will develop a strong bond between parents and their kids.

• You can cook together and ask them to do the measuring math, recognize the colors and remember the name of things in the kitchen. Ask them what’s going on in their head, and fulfill their natural curiosity with answers.

• When your child learns about weather or the orbiting of Earth around the sun, talk about why it is hot at the beach or why it is cold at night. Just like this, you can make learning a daily part of your kid’s lives. Connect what your child learns at school with everyday world.

• Be an inspirational role model for your child; learn to control your anger and manage stress. Communicate and stay active in their lives.

• Last but not the least, learn something new yourself. Take up a new art or language class. Show them that you are a student just like them and how you are struggling. They might learn couple of things from your study skills. Listen to them, share their concerns and help them understand. They will feel loved and respected and would strive to reach up to your expectations.

1. USE A WAKE UP LIGHTModern alarm clocks come with a built in light, some actually slowly and steadily increase in brightness as time progresses, which allows a smooth transition from sleeping to waking. Or you can simply open up the blinds and curtains 15 minutes before waking time, to ease your child out of sleep.

By Mohammed MirzaWith schools about to begin after a long summer break, mornings of sleeping in until 9 or 10 a.m. are gone and 6 a.m. becomes the norm. After having strict bedtime timings lifted for three months, these early mornings can be harsh on children. As the morning alarm rings, you wake up and rush to your child’s room. You knock on the door and politely tell your child to wakeup. No response, you give a few minutes grace period and come back again. You continue the process and your voice turns louder with each time you come back. And at the end of it you have to at times physically pull them out of bed and force them to school. To prevent such a thing from happening that ruins your morning as well as theirs we prepared a list of fun ways to get your children up for school. From newfangled apps to old-school methods, these tips will definitely help make your mornings a little cheerier.

3. TURN OFF THE AC Living in Saudi Arabia, the air conditioner is a must for a sound sleep. It may seem a bit harsh, but turning the AC off actually forces your child to come out of bed and turn it back on — that’s the moment you wait for. Now that they are up don’t let them hit the bed again and instead direct them to the washroom to start getting ready.

4. PROMISE THEM BREAKFAST FROM A FOOD JOINT

Many children sometimes find themselves bored with homemade food, so it’s always good once in a while to get them breakfast from outside. And on days when your child is having a tougher time than usual to get out of bed, try to bribe them with food from their favorite breakfast joint.

Get Your Child Out

Of Bed

5. USE APPSIf you are tired of using old school methods, try using these alarm apps that are creative as well as fun. “Wake up with Disney” is an app in which users can pick and choose costumes and backgrounds, view live forecasts in funny animations, and turn the app into a flashlight at night. Donald will jump up and down to get your child out of bed. Or there is an app called “Sleep if you can,” in which users have to head towards a registered place such as the kitchen or washroom, etc., which you have to reach in order to turn the alarm off – even if your child doesn’t have a smartphone just place the phone next to their bed and watch them go to the pre-registered place to turn it off.

6. ENLIST THE HELP OF YOUR PET!If you are not a fan of technology and prefer to wake them up, old school style? Get some help from your family pet. Whether you have a dog or cat, slightly open the door and watch these lovely creatures get your child out of bed with just sheer cuteness.

7. LET THEM EARN REWARDS FOR WAKING UPThere are plenty of things that you can offer, from letting them watch their favorite cartoon after school or some extra pocket money, a little bribery to children never hurts – as long as it doesn’t become a habit.

8. CRACK THEIR JOINTSThis is my personal favorite, I find nothing that works better than this on days when your child is having a tough time waking up. Start from the toes and then to the fingers, the cracking may be annoying but it’s enough to wake your child up.

Take your child out on an

process.Marta’s Cakes

Bakery | Piatto | Café Ceramique

WHere tO DINe at 7 a.M.?

Places such as Waffle’s, Café Bateel and The Pancake

House open as early as 7 a.m. and have some delicious

items on their breakfast menu.

9. A CUP OF COLD WATER Pour a cup of cold water on the sheets and pillows! When a warm, cozy bed turns cold and damp, much of the appeal of sleeping there disappears. You probably only need to do this once, as the threat of doing it again should be enough to jolt them out of bed!

10. GET THEM EARLY TO SLEEPIf none of these seem to be working and your child continues to face difficulty waking up then there seems to be something wrong with your child’s sleeping habits. Try preparing a sleeping schedule for them and get them to sleep early!

p e t sBy Zareen MuzaffarHaving a pet can help children develop empathy and compassion. We often see children on streets running after animals, trying to scare them, beat them or throw something at them.

We can cultivate and nurture empathetic behavior in children so they are more loving towards animals. We can take children to take care of pets even if they don’t own them; we can teach our children to feed the stray animals instead of hurting them. Taking care of pets also instills a sense of responsibility in children. Here are some ideas our young friends can consider when it comes to developing love for our furry friends:

Feeding them A lot of people are kind enough to feed street cats or birds flocked together. A lot of food often goes to the waste bin, instead of throwing it, utilize whatever you can and feed the animals. Giving them water is also extremely important considering it’s pretty hot here all year round.

Taking them to shelters One problem animals face in the Kingdom is lack of shelters. There are some private animal shelters here but they are not sufficient for this burgeoning problem. We need more shelters but for now lets take our lost friends to a temporary home so they have a chance at finding a better place.

Making a small shelter During the harsh summer,

we can help animals by making a small

shed for them. This can be a great activity for children. They can take few cartons,

tape and strings and create a small

shed outside or near their homes/apartments so the animals can have some respite from the heat.

Pet them, don’t scare them Usually children consider scaring pets and animals as part of being affectionate. Children need to be told the difference so they can pat animals lovingly instead of running after them or scaring them.

Removing obstacles I have often seen kittens playing on the road or crossing the road when a car is zooming by. If you are driving, try your

best to maneuver the car safely to save the animals life. If you see a kitten near a dangerous object or close to a vehicle, transport it to a safer place.

Cope, don’t abandon There are cases of expatriates leaving the country and abandoning their pets and leaving them unattended. It may take a little time but finding them a home is possible, and if not, then giving them to a shelter is a far better option. You can post an ad online on Facebook pages, expatriates.com or spread the word through friends!

great interests in football and specific cartoon characters. We don’t meet much during the weekdays. Weekends are

the time where we all gather for chitchats and jokes. I was alarmed last family gathering by Ahmed’s question “Auntie, what is your Instagram account? And how do you communicate with your friends through twitter?”

He made me feel like I was from another planet. From the surprising look on my face, Ahmed knew that I had none. With his cute giggle he shouted “Come on, Auntie, where are you living? Neither Instagram nor Twitter!! Thank God you are not my mom; my ma is cool enough and has both.”Honestly, this was a turning point in my way of thinking. If kids today see their tremendous exposure to online channels as being cool; then how will our lives be 10 years from now? During our childhood, mobile phones were something we looked at as a luxury once we enter college. Exposure to media and looking at it as a necessity will be at the expense of many other activities. We don’t want our children to train less, swim less or run less.

We in Saudi Arabia, have a very high rate of obesity among youngsters. Encouraging communication through social media channels might have its drawbacks in the future. Parents need to be smart enough to intervene when needed. Freedom in exploring is required. However, limits are to be set. I can still call my friend over the phone or go meet him/her instead of spending hours chatting through Skype or Facebook. Real life encounters help our kids in developing their social and communication skills. We don’t want them to depend fully on the cyberspace in everything they do. It feels different when you read a book, try the clothes you want to buy and sit on the couch you wish to purchase. Technology is brilliant by the choices it offers. However, let us raise a generation that appreciates both offline and online worlds. Both worlds do exist and we need to train our offspring to manage their ways around in both.

As a matter of fact, communities are starting to suffer from addiction to the social networks. In fact, therapy is being offered for individuals who are living the consequences miserably.

These are the ones who enjoy being alone; prefer solitude and avoid meeting people. In Saudi specifically, co-ed education is not spread much and places where boys and girls and men and women meet are limited. Depending on communication through your electronic device will only make things worse. Furthermore, medical doctors consistently alarm the parents about the long hours of using electronic devices for their children. It affects their physical fitness as well as their social behavior.

In addition, they are more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety. In fact, research in the medical world is developing towards discussing the effects of cyber addiction on individuals from all age groups. Moreover, the first hospital in the US is starting to treat Internet Addiction through digital detox. Thus, moderation and the correct use of online exposure are needed to avoid falling in its unpleasant consequences.

Parents should expect their children to ask about having their own Facebook and Instagram accounts as early as 7 years old.

WHEN ANSWERING YOUR CHILD:

avoid saying yes or no before explaining to your child what FB/Instagram is about. It is advisable to show them the application yourself and take them through different examples of postings.

Make it clear for your child that there are reasons behind the existence of many accounts such as business related ones.

Moreover, show your child that some people share their daily photos with their families who live away from them to feel they are close. always discuss, listen and talk to your child. It is the only way that will get you close and aware of their actions.

By Nisma RafiqHow many times have you been in a situation when the

person sitting next to you is busy with his phone instead of talking to you? Have you seen someone pretending to be

listening to you while their fingers were quickly moving on their smart phones?

use NOT ABUSE TECHNOLOGY

It’s such a frustrating situation when picture of the cat on the mobile phone gets more attention than the cat sitting nearby. Yes, to some extent technology has made our life easier as it helps with information, interaction and entertainment. It is accommodating to students who need to learn and do research. But is it fair to completely rely on technology?

It’s the misuse of technology when students miss their class because they know they have Google. Instead of listening to the teacher, they believe Google has all the answers. Students can’t focus as they have technological interruptions such as text messages or emails,

and an urge to check updates about their friends on social networks.

Technology was introduced to reduce the distances, whereas in modern times it has proved to be the opposite. Social networks have made us socially awkward. We’ve all been through a situation when we try to talk to someone but they are more interested in updating their status on Facebook.

Let’s assume for a minute that technology is neither good nor bad, but it is our fascination and addiction to the screen that is disturbing. This connection to technology is only expanding, which means the addiction is getting worse. Instead of interacting and laughing together in a room, everyone seems to be more engrossed in their cell phones.

Real world is not perfect, but it is worth your attention. Instead of capturing picture of a beautiful place, just try to feel it for a while. Listen to your teachers and family first; they know a lot of things Google doesn’t. Facebook and its updates are not going anywhere. Person sitting next to you is more important than far away friends. Just ask yourself at what cost you are replacing personal interactions with technology. You’ll get your answer.

By Mohammed Mirza Active children need healthy doses of snacks to boost their energy and help them concentrate

for afternoon studies. With our healthy lunchbox tips, you’ll find packing a healthy lunchbox to nourish your kids a breeze! You can be reasonably assured that their lunchbox

will actually come home at the end of the day empty!

• Think about what your child likes to eat and try to translate it into a healthier version. For example, your child likes something fried, try baking it instead. Or if your child likes cheese sandwiches try replacing it with low fat cheese.

• Vegetables are often overlooked when it comes to children’s snacks. Try cutting up some carrot sticks or include leafy greens in a sandwich.

Tip: You can find fun-sized veggies perfectly packaged for lunchboxes at Danube.

• While the apple is an all-time favorite for a lunchbox, try replacing it with other fruits such as pears or kiwis every now and then, to ensure that your child gets a variety of vitamins in his/her system.

Tip: If you still want the apple, try baked apple slices sprinkled with cinnamon.

• Last night's leftovers can make a welcome change to the parade of endless sandwiches that are normally given in lunchboxes. Just place it in an airtight container with a plastic spoon for easy eating.

Tip: You can find nice and colorful containers at supermarkets.

• Fruit Kebabs—try putting pieces of fruits on skewers, because everything just looks better on them. Don’t forget to cut off the pointy ends to prevent any accidents.

Tip: Soak skewers in water before placing food on them. That way they won’t burn on the grill.

• It is okay once in a while for a child to have his favorite food, which may not be the healthiest option. But do remember that on the day that is given, put a nutribar or a fruit along with it, to ensure that your child gets a great deal of daily dose of required nutrients.

• For kids who struggle to eat lunch, try putting a smoothie in a small jar or thermos and your kids will get a whole lot of nutrients in a drink! You can make it with a variety of fruits and have different fruits for different days of the week!

Tip: Check out Instagram account @befitsmoothies for inspiration.

•Boiled eggs are something we all want our children to eat. But many kids unfortunately want to run away from it as much as they can. To ensure they get this protein rich system in their lunch, try making them in fancy shapes. If that doesn’t work you can always fry an egg using minimal oil and make an egg sandwich.

• Children love chips, so why not give it to them – a healthier version ofcourse. You can make banana chips at home, by just baking banana slices with coconut oil. If your child doesn’t like banana he/she doesn’t have to know its ingredients!

Tip: Cinnamon powder is a perfect topping for almost all fruits.

ANOOsHA Saudi business (we’re quite proud), has the ever so popular Anoosh cookie! And we must say, we understand why it’s this popular. A bite in and you get a great chewy yet crunchy yet soft texture, and the chocolate is a decent ratio to the dough. It’s delicious, it’s not that expensive, and you can find them fresh out of the oven almost round the clock whenever you pop into the store. Recently, the company raised the price from SR 3 to SR 5. Even with the price raise though, the cookie is still a perfect balance of price vs value all round, and we’ve crowned it as our winner! Yay!

MuNCHAnother Saudi business based in Jeddah. Known more for their cakes than their cookies, we were pleasantly surprised at how delicious theirs was! It was chewy enough, slightly doughy, with positively a ton of chocolate. Probably the most chocolate we’ve ever come across out of our own homemade cookies. After torturing us during Ramadan morning with pictures of their molten cookie cups and Oreo cookies, we picked up the phone and demanded they deliver some goods. The convenience of home delivery aside, their standard chocolate chip cookie was good but did not wow. The texture of the dough was odd and more suitable for date-based cookies, and there was practically no chocolate in it at all. Sidenote: Their molten cookie was great, though, and the packaging was adorable.

It had a good texture and the chewiness was decent, but it tasted bland. There wasn’t that much chocolate either. COOKIes’N’CReAMA Saudi business, Cookies’n’Cream made a huge splash on the cookie scene (yes, there’s a cookie scene) with their candy bar line of cookies. Reese’s cups baked in cookie dough? Yes please. Their chocolate chip cookie is just as good as we remember. The chewiness is perfect, and the chocolate is good if slightly sweet. We wouldn’t go out of our way to eat it but as an option it’s pretty decent. We left it overnight and tasted it the next day and it was still pretty good, too!

By Mohammed MirzaAs a child growing up in the Middle East, I can’t recall hearing of Belgian chocolates at all. It was only Swiss chocolates that were famous back in the day across the region. However, in the recent past the popularity of Belgian chocolates has risen to such an extent that it almost matches its Swiss counterparts, being available almost everywhere from local neighborhood stores to high end chocolate vendors.

The hunT For The Perfect Belgian Chocolate

The taste however still didn’t impress much. Different shops sold different brands all which had different tastes. It made me eager to know what does the quintessential Belgian chocolate taste like and is it really the best chocolate in the world as believed by many!

On my last visit to Belgium I was in a hunt, a hunt to taste the quintessential Belgian chocolate that tastes the best in the world. To begin my search I first went to the diamond trading city of Antwerp. From locals I heard about an area called Groenplaats in the older part of the city, which according to them are where the best Belgian chocolates can be found.

The following morning I sat on a local tram opposite to my dormitory, which took me straight to Groenplaats station. Once in Groenplaats, I walked the streets exploring the area until I saw a gargantuan cathedral, which had a small chocolate shop right opposite to it. It had a signboard placed

outside that read “homemade Belgian chocolates.” I walked in the small cozy shop that was nestled in between baroque houses and hotels.

There were a variety of chocolates on display, most had fancy names. I didn’t care about the fancy names or variety; I just wanted to taste the best Belgian chocolate. Some of them were vodka- and rum-based; being a non-alcoholic consumer those were out of the question for me.I had a good look at the variety of chocolates and I chose a light brown one that was finally cut in a trapezoid like shape. As soon as I put it in my mouth it melted and tasted unlike any other chocolate I had ever tried before. I was asking myself if I had found the best chocolate in the world with my first try?

I tried a few more all tasting better than the previous one. I then made my way out of the shop and noticed that there were numerous chocolate boutiques right beside it. I

tried a few more chocolates in the various shops but by now I tried so many that I was indifferent to the taste and called it a day.

The following day I paid visit to the historic city of Bruges and walked down its narrow alleyways that were dotted by age old houses and lodges. After trying a few chocolates in the city, I realized that something was missing here; in fact it was missing in the chocolates that I tried in Antwerp the other day. I told myself that I still haven’t tasted the best chocolate in the world.Continuing my search I visited

Europe’s capital Brussels. Surprisingly, I didn’t come across as many chocolate boutiques in the city as in Antwerp or Bruges. My trip to Belgium was coming to an end and I still hadn’t found what I came here for. Just before catching my train back to Antwerp, I came across a small Leonidas shop that was selling chocolates outside the Gare Centrale train station. I tried my luck and as soon as I tasted a chocolate that carried the name “milk,” I knew this was it. This was the chocolate that I had been in search for the past week.

I didn’t expect to find it right when I was leaving and never in a small kiosk. But there it was calmly sitting in the cold display waiting for tasters to try the famed quintessential Belgian chocolate right outside the main train station of Brussels that tastes the best in the world!

Tucked halfway up a lush, grassy hill, the sunshine bouncing off an ancient stone bridge, a little blue and red narrowboat gently puffs plumes of wood smoke into the air.

The panoramic views across the valley reveal small tufts of wool grazing in the distance on the rolling hillsides. Holding my steaming cup of freshly ground coffee – brewed over a wooden stove – I spy honey-colored stone country homes peering from behind thickets of trees. The beautiful silence is broken only occasionally by the distant rumble of a passing Great Western train along the valley floor, chasing the River Avon all the way into the city of Bath.

England’s second most visited city has serious pedigree, it’s where the planet Uranus was discovered in 1781, before that it was where England’s first King, Edgar, was crowned and even before that, where the Romans harnessed the natural hot springs into the beautiful bathhouses that gave the city its name and England one of

the most important Roman remains north of the Alps. Bath is so damn gorgeous and crammed with heritage sites that in 1987, UNESCO stopped bothering to try and count them all and instead designated the whole city a World Heritage site!

And yet I return to it time and again to enjoy not just the city but the beautiful valley it

nestles in, where communities of free-spirited “boaties” reside on the Kennet and Avon canal as it snakes its way, like a belt around the midriff of the lush West Country hills.

“I was actually just passing through here on my bike having just finished a cycle from Land’s End to John o Groats (the length of the UK) and had no intentions of stopping permanently,” said my friend Matt. “I had just left my teaching job in London and was contemplating going back when I saw this boat for sale. That was five years ago!”

Matt lives on the “Mrs. T” a delightful little seven-foot narrowboat that has its own wood burner, kitchen, enough seating for company, built in stereo, shower, toilet and a raised bed with a skylight where he lies at night staring dreamily up at the starry night sky.

“Impossible in London!”

Matt said. “With all that light pollution you couldn’t see a single star in the sky, but out here, well it’s just magical ...”

Matt became my friend when we trained together as teachers in London and remains one of the main reasons I regularly come to Bath.

After enjoying the beauty and crowds of the Georgian city, I always make my way – usually on two wheels – along the canal’s well maintained and flat towpath to spend a couple of days in the Avon Valley on his boat.

On this occasion we are moored next to Dundas Aqueduct, a Victorian engineering masterpiece that takes the canal from the valley’s northern hills across to the southern hills atop magnificent stone arches that spread themselves over the Wessex Main Line track and the River Avon.

Earlier when we navigated Mrs. T over the aqueduct, one body of water passing over another, it really was the most surreal feeling – like being on a weird Victorian log-flume fair ride, only at snail-pace with no screaming kids and instead the most breathtaking views.

Streams of golden light hit the valley on either side as the lush hills gently roll down, taking the grazing cows and sheep with them to meet the railway track and rushing river, whose distant sound makes for the perfect backdrop.

This will be our mooring point for the evening.

“When you stand on Dundas, you get to see the most glorious sunset as the sun disappears behind the hills and trees and the sky turns all the different shades of oranges and pinks,”

Matt said. “Just perfect!”Matt should know, after all he has seen sunsets the length and breadth of the country.

BEAUTIFUL BATHThe Avon Valley is the perfect add-on to visiting stunning Bath, which is delightfully nestled between seven grassy hills. The hot springs that have made the city famous hit natural temperatures of 46 degrees Celsius and were probably used by England’s prehistoric man long before the Roman’s built their ostentatious bathhouses in 44 AD.

They called the town Aquae Sulis after the goddess Sulis-Minerva, to whom they dedicated a temple next to the bathhouses.

The remains of all this can now be seen at the Roman Baths in the center of town, yards from the spot where Edgar was crowned the first King of “united” England in 973.

By then the Romans had left and the Baths had lost their allure.

But all that changed in the late 17th century when influential socialite and self-proclaimed “King” of Bath, Richard “Beau” Nash and Ralph Allen made the city and its baths the height of fashion amongst Georgian bourgeois society.

Hiring talented and exciting father and son architects John Wood “the Elder” and his son “the Younger,” Nash and Allen demanded buildings inspired by the same classical culture that had given the city its famous bathhouse. The father and

son duo worked wonders as they created neo-classical and Palladian styles that echoed the temples and monuments of ancient Greece and Rome. These they harmonised with the natural surroundings using carefully landscaped and delicately nurtured gardens and open spaces.

The results were houses made from the beautiful golden local ‘Bath stone’ organised into geometric havens of linear and curved terraces that are without equal anywhere in the British Isles.

The crowning glories of the Woods’ efforts are Queen Square, the King’s Circus and the Royal Crescent – A semi-circular terrace of regal houses that stare out across the Royal Victoria Park. Rumour has it one of these is home to an equally good-looking man going by the name of Jonny Depp.

The World Heritage city work’s hard to preserve this look, ensuring all new buildings are built in harmony with the rest of the Georgian masterpiece. Even the local Islamic society has conformed, housing itself in a stunning terrace along Pierrepoint Street.

Needless to say, if you are going to see only one city outside of London, it has to be Bath.

THE BATHSThe Bathhouses are no longer for bathing but can be visited daily from 9 a.m. with seasonal closing times (9 p.m. in the summer). Inside, highlights include the Great Bath; the 12th century King’s Narrowboats ply the cannal

Bath built around the original sacred spring still pouring 1.5 million litres of hot water daily into the pool; the ruins of the Sulis-Minerva temple and excavations of the East Baths, which offer a glimpse into the original 4th century setup. There is even the option to have all this narrated to you by the witty and incisive travel writer Bill Bryson (Admission is SR 87 for adults and SR 57 for children).

LITERARY BATHFor anyone fond of the classics, head for the house where Bath’s most famous resident Jane Austen lived. Austen set her novels “Persuasion” and “Northanger Abbey” in the city. Her former residency, 40 Gay Street is now the delightful little Jane Austen Centre, which explores the writer’s connections to the city as well as offering walking tours that take you to the many places mentioned in the books, with most having changed little since the author’s day (Admission is SR 52 for adults and SR 29 for children).

TIME FOR TEAIn such a classic English city it would be criminal not to stop for tea and scones. There are numerous pretty little venues to do this, but one of the best spots is The Bridge Coffee Shop on the impressive Pulteney Bridge – designed as a parade rather than a bridge, here antiquate shops overlook the River Avon’s weir right in the center of town. It is quite the experience to enjoy scrumptiously warm, fluffy scones smeared with West Country cream and jam to the sound of rushing water as you look out over the river.

WHAT NOT TO MISSHire a bicycle from any one of Bath’s many bike rentals and cycle out to the Avon valley along the Kennet and Avon towpath, heading for Dundas Aqueduct. After the initial clamber of joggers, narrow boats and fellow cyclists, you’ll find yourself in the open valley with nothing but the crisp air, greenery and the odd local “boatie” for company. Dundas Aqueduct is

a 30-minute gentle cycle along the canal from Bath.

HOW TO GET HEREThe best way to see Bath is as an add-on to London. A return train ticket from London Paddington to Bath costs approx SR 440 via Great Western Trains and the journey can will take as little as one hour and 10 minutes. By road, Bath is 164 km to the West of London.

All major airlines fly from London to Jeddah and some will even fly to Bristol, Bath’s nearest airport (20 minutes by train).

By Ahlam Yassin It’s back to school season and you’re probably getting ready for busy school days, the anticipation of new lessons learned and the stories that come home with your child everyday. It can get pretty hectic and overwhelming. That’s why I’ve asked some pretty busy moms their productivity hacks for maintaining order, reducing stress and keeping their sanity.

tIP1: Rise eaRly:Most moms I’ve talked to mentioned the absolute necessity of waking up early. Productive Muslim has been advocating waking up for fajr and staying up since its inception and here’s just one reason why: From Shakr Al Ghamidi that the Messenger of Allah said: “O Allah bless my Ummah in what they do early (in the day).” [Tirmidhi] The hours immediately after Fajr are peaceful. Use this time to start your day off right with recitation of the Qur’an, quiet reflection and preparation for the day to come. This is a quiet time, unlike any other part of the day. Getting a head start on your day will help you feel energized and ready to conquer whatever the day has in store for you.

MAKING tHe MOSt OF yOUR TiMe

tIP2: schedUle yOUR Meals:Planning ahead will save you the headache of not knowing, or what I like to call the “not-knowing syndrome.” Plan what you’ll be cooking for the week over the weekend and create a schedule. Make sure this list is handy when grocery shopping (you don’t want to waste time running to the grocery store during the week!). Having a menu for your home will save you time and energy.

If they still need your help, make sure their clothes are clean and ready for the next day before you go to sleep. The night before, pack all book bags and if you’re heading out to work, your workbag and clothes for the day should be ready as well.

tIP4: RecRUiT The helP OF FaMily aNd FRieNds:Remember, you are not a machine. Although we may like to think we can do it all, the fact is we’re human and we can’t. Saying that is pretty refreshing and makes it easier to ask for help. Have your kids pitch in; you’ll be surprised how much your 5-year-old can do, at least make (or try to make) his/her own bed. In addition to helping you tidy up, you are teaching your child responsibility as well. Ask your spouse for support, both in the household chores and emotional support. If you have sisters or cousins, you can exchange babysitting days, giving yourself some much needed quiet time.

tIP5: BUild sTRONg FaMily Ties OveR Meals:Make it a point to sit down with your kids over a meal. It’s hard to have all family members present mid-week but whoever is at home when dinner is served should be sitting at the table. It’s important to talk about what’s going on in school, ask questions and listen for answers. Too often, we get caught up in juggling our responsibilities that we forget to listen. Creating a time to listen is essential, especially when they’re young. InshaAllah, when we instill a habit of open dialogue with our children when they are young, they will remain open and honest with us even as they get older.

tIP6: give yOURselF a BReak:Once a week, make sure you schedule in productive downtime, which means you are shifting gears and taking it easy. Things you can do include journaling (reflection is always positive and helps beat stress) and having a no-cooking day. HELP YOUR COMMUNITY

By Zareen MuzaffarThere’s so much children can do in their spare time

and still contribute towards society and their surroundings. We may think a single person’s action has no impact but every

Don’t Litter: Any time a child throws rubbish on the streets, remind them this is something they should not do, no matter where they go. Reminders are a great way of instilling values and ethics in children and littering is a common problem in most societies.

Don’t Waste: Children can learn to use whatever they need and not to buy excessively. There are some great toy stores around town but I have seen some children who keep their rooms over populated and stocked with toys. Instead of filling up the playroom to its maximum capacity, we can give away some toys to the needy or buy some new ones for them.

Volunteer: These days children are very tech savvy, they can use computers and laptops with efficiency. During vacations or free time, they can volunteer and teach those who need help. Or they can teach other children (or adults) and impart their knowledge, this way they can learn more and contribute as well.

Lend Books and School Supplies: There are many children who need help and supplies. If you have some stationary items, books, folders, anything you can lend, go ahead and help members of

your family, friends or strangers who need them. Lending books is a special act as we are contributing towards spreading knowledge.

Give Alms: Children can also learn to set aside a little bit from their pocket money to give to the needy. We see a lot of needy people around the city, if you feel giving money is not advisable, get them something to eat, or some clothes or shoes they can use.

Plant Trees and Flowers: This is a great way to spread some color around the city and a nice activity for children in their spare time! Why not head to Fayfa and buy some seeds for plants and flowers. You can use them around your house or outside, the shade of the tree will be beneficial for years to come.

Make A Group: Children can make a small group with those who share their interests and hobbies. They can help each other learn more, strengthen their knowledge and then start offering help to others too. For instance, a writing club can help you teach others the art of writing or thinking. Coding is very popular these days so why not learn coding online for free and then help others learn it too. You can make great websites from scratch!

An enormous number of passengers are traveling every day to everywhere, passing through different time zones and spending long hours in the aircraft until they reach their final destination. During my trips I always find the same problem during meal times on board. What to choose?

Many airlines solve that problem easily. They offer

you a buy-on-board menu and you can choose your meal according to your taste and dietary restrictions. More traditional airlines still keep the oldie-goldie model of offering a fixed catering menu to their economy class passengers.

Why should you choose between chicken, beef or fish when all three taste exactly the same and you cannot control the ingredients or the calorie intake?

KEEPING FACE IN RIYADH

Your 5-Step guide to better Looking Skin

in the Desert!By Johara Al Mogbel

Riyadh has a harsh climate, which can lead to a lot of skin problems that people usually

cover up with makeup. In the long run though, prevention is the cure, to bring up the old but

truthful cliché. Here are a few tips to help you get as good a base as possible before you

follow any make up tutorial:

Drink boatloads of water. This is a pretty general rule,

and staying hydrated benefits the entire body, but its importance can’t be seen any more clearly than its effect on your skin. A lack of water will leave your face looking tired and dry, so keep a giant bottle of water next to you and drink as much as you can in short intervals. Your eyes will look brighter, too!

Use a gentle cleanser in the morning, and

an exfoliator in the evening. Using a scrub first thing in the morning will rob your face of the moisture it needs, and will make it harsh the rest of the day. Using a gentle soap-free cleanser is much better and will help your skin to retain the moisture it needs. At night, however, use a scrub or exfoliator to clear your pores from the grime it collected throughout the day. It sounds nasty, we know, but keep in mind that dusty air is Riyadh’s specialty and it’ll cause a host of problems if not cleared away daily.

Keep a cream based scent-free moisturizer at

hand and use liberally to combat the dry air. Stay away from any oil-based or scented moisturizers, as scents and oil on your face will do much more harm than good. Apply after cleanser in the morning,

then refresh as needed throughout the way. We advise you ask your dermatologist for a recommendation.

Use sunscreen. It’s horrible and it will leave you looking

like a ghost, but this is the most important step of all, doubly so for those living in Riyadh. We cannot stress how important this is. We get exposed to a lot of sun, and it tires the skin out if you’re not careful. If you’re using any curative creams prescribed by dermatologist or even over the counter and you skip sunscreen, you will most probably end up with darker pigmentations on your skin that might be difficult to cure. So, go out looking like a ghost. It will save you. And stick to higher SPF numbers for better coverage from sun rays.

Keep your vitamin levels healthy. Vitamin deficiency

in the body can lead to a host of problems, and since your skin is an easy target, it will show up on it first. Eat fresh fruit and veggies, and try to minimize your junk food levels. Certain types of fish have high omega levels, so those are good as well. Also, it does no harm to take a blood test to see what you might have lacking, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to prescribe vitamin supplements you can take.

5 StePS To gET THis gLoWing makEuP Look! By Shoug Al SalamahPhotography Abeer Alwgait

1- Start by cleaning and scrubbing your skin. Then apply your primer or moisturizer, followed by foundation and concealer. Remember! Your foundation should match your skin tone and color.

2- Use an eye primer that will enhance the color of your eye shadow and make it last for a longer time. Afterwards, apply a dark shade on the outer eye corner and start shifting gradually by blending with a clean brush, until you reach a very light shimmery shade on the inner eye corner.

3- Eyeliner glam! Start with a fine line along your lash line and work your way out, by gradually increasing the thickness to create the wing. Apply false lashes on the upper lid and a generous amount of mascara on the lower lid. And don’t forget to add nude/white colored pencil on the lower lash line to give your eyes the illusion that they’re wider.

4-Now let’s contour! For areas that need hiding, apply a concealer that is three shades darker than the skin color, and apply a concealer that is two shades lighter toareas like the center of the forehead, chin, bridge of the nose and cheeks.

Now that you’ve got your skin care regimen taken care of, here’s your reward—a makeup guide to having glowing look for those moments when you simply want to shine!

5- Finally, the lips! It’s always better to choose a natural pink/nude color to match the palette of the eye makeup.

And now you’re ready for to strut your stuff for the paparazzi! Or the multitude of selfies you’ll most definitely take at any party. We won’t judge.
