RESEARCH EXPERIENCE 2015–present Post-doctoral Scientist

Department of Atmosphere in the Earth System, Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, Hamburg, Germany

Focus: Dynamics of the Upper Atmosphere; Atmospheric Gravity Waves; Atmospheric Model Development

• Extending the grid-point atmosphere-ocean-land model ICON to the mesosphere and lower thermosphere, for better simulation of upper-atmospheric temperature and general circulation, and in the end better environment for gravity wave simulation

• Analyzed gravity wave momentum flux simulated in an ICON simulation on 40km resolution and compared the result with literature studies using satellite observations and modeling data.

2011–2016 Research Assistant, Doctoral Level

Department of Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics, GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, Kiel, Germany

Focus: Extratropical Ocean-Atmosphere Interaction; Atmospheric Eddy-Mean Flow Interaction; Forced and Coupled Atmospheric Modeling

• Conducted research on the mechanism of atmospheric response to decadal extratropical SST anomalies, with a focus on atmospheric eddy-mean flow interaction, Rossby wave sources, and critical components of SST variability

• Conducted a series of highly optimized simulations with the ECHAM5 atmospheric general circulation model on high and low resolutions forced by various designed boundary conditions

• Investigated the link between SST and the atmospheric general circulation in observations and in a 2000-year coupled Kiel Climate Model (KCM) simulation

• Studied statistical methods to remove ENSO signal from climate records and compared their skill

2008–2011 Research Assistant, Master's Level College of Physical and Environmental Oceanography, Ocean University of

China, Qingdao, China

Focus: Small Scale Air-Sea Interaction in the Wave Boundary Layer; Dynamics of Ocean Surface Wave; Ocean Wave Numerical Simulation

• Researched the mechanism of wave-induced modification to near-surface wind, especially under high wind speed and hurricane conditions

• Implemented a wave boundary layer model and coupled it to the spectral wave model SWAN to significantly improve wave simulation skill

• Conducted studies in the relationship between wave age and wave steepness, derived a new empirical formula using buoy data
