    Dr. Cavils HBCU Major and Mid-Major Division Preseason Poll Rankings are based on a combination of a ranking algorithm and a voting system. It isthe original HBCU sports poll that separates the rankings (since 2002) of NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NAIA Division I member HBCUinstitutions into two distinct categorical polls: Major and Mid-Major (This format is unlike the histori c SBN Poll).

    The Major Division Poll, consist of NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) [formerly I-AA] programs and the Mid-Major DivisionPoll, which consist of both NCAA Division II and NAIA Division I programs. This format was introduced to the public based on the request of BlackCollege blogging fans and on the research that consists of data mining and the difference in scholarship limitation requirements beset by NCAA andNAIA bylaws (i.e. maximum allotment: Division I FCS = 63, Division II = 36 and N AIA = 24).

    provided some clarity mainly with the No. 6 Tennessee State Tigers (2-1, 0-0), resoundingly punishing, 35-6, the

    No. 7 Jackson State Tigers (2-1, 0-0)in the 25th Southern Heritage Classic.

    TEN YEARS AND COUNTING !

    The Howard Bison (1-2, 0-0) and the No. 2 Texas Southern Tigers (3 -0, 1-0) overwhelmed their Mid-Major Division IIopponents, the Morehouse Maroon Tigers (1-1, 0-0) in the AT&T Nations Classic in Washington, DC and the CentralState Marauders (1-1, 1-0) in the inaugural HBCUX Classic in Nassau, Bahamas, respectively.     Offense - North Carolina A&T RB Tarik Cohen ranfor a career-high 234 yards (20 carries), one TD,and threw for a TD in the Aggies' 17-12 win overElon.

    Defense- Savannah State LB Marques Smith hadnine tackles (five for losses) and three sacks in theTigers' 42-28 loss to Fort Valley State.

    Special Teams- Morgan State P Lawrence Forbeshad seven punts for 308 yards (longest 51 yards) inthe Bears' 28-3 win over Bowie State.

    Coach- Tennessee States Coach Rod Reed. TheBig Blue Tigers guided under the leadership ofCoach Reed defeated the previously undefeated andsecond ranked Jackson State Tigers, 35-7, in the25th Southern Heritage Classic in Memphis, TN.

    The No. 1 ranked Bethune-Cookman Wildcats (2-0, 0-0) defeated the winless Grambling StateTigers (0-3, 0-0). In the contest quarterback Quentin Williams passed for 165 yards, rushed for40 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Wildcats to a fourth quarter comeback win. TheWildcats received 103 points and lost one first-place vote for a total of six in the poll rankingsthis week. The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats are preparing to play their second FBS Division I

    program in the UCF Knights (0-2, 0-0) of the AAC.

    The No. 2 Texas Southern Tigers (3-0, 1-0) continue to move up the poll rankings as theydefeated, 30-16, the NCAA Division II, Central State Marauders (1-1, 1-0) of the SIAC (Mid-Major Division) in Nassau, Bahamas in the inaugural HBCUX Classic. The Texas Southern

    Tigers received 92 points and one first-place vote in Week 2 of the poll rankings. In that football contest the Tigersquarterback, Jamal Small passed for 186 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. The No. 2 Texas SouthernTigers (3-0, 1-0) of the SWAC will host the Alabama A&M Bulldogs (1-2, 0-0) in SWAC matchup.

    The No. 3 Alcorn State Braves (2-1, 0-0) and the No. 4 Alabama State Hornets (2-1, 1-0) also move up one spot inweeks rankings. The No. 3 Alcorn State Braves defeated Louisiana College, 52-10. Quarterback, John Gibbs, Jr.,

    passed for 189 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in the contest. The Braves received 57 points and gainedtheir first first-place vote of the season. The third ranked Braves travel to face their in-state rival in the MississippiValley State Delta Devils (1-2, 0-1) this weekend.

    Rank your top ten HBCU Mid-Major programs @DrKenyattaCavil @DrKenyattaCavi ldemolished, 47-22,the previously tenthranked MississippiValley State Delta 1 2 3 4 5Devils (1-2, 0-1) in a SWAC Eastern Division contest. Alabama State running back Malcolm Cyrus rushed for 171yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. The Alabama State Hornets received 79 points and two first-place vote. The No.4 Hornets, in a Thursday night ESPNU primetime SWAC clash host the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions (1-1, 0-0)in Montgomery, AL.

    The fifth ranked North Carolina A&T Aggies (2-1, 0-0) jump back in the top five of Dr. Cavils HBCU Major DivisionPoll Rankings this week. The No. 5 Aggies went on the road to defeat, 17-12, the Elon Phoenix (0-2, 0-0) of theColonial Athletic Association. The Aggies running back rushed for 234 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown. TheAggies will host the Chowan Hawks (1-1, 1-0) a non-HBCU program, but a member of the CIAA. The Aggiesreceived 71 points and one first-place vote.

    The No. 6 Tennessee State Tigers (2-1, 0-0) scored 35 points in the first half and defeated the No. 7 Jackson StateTigers (2-1, 0-0), 35-7, in the 25th Southern Heritage Classic in Memphis, TN. The Tennessee State Tigers received 57

    points and the Jackson State Tigers received 40 points in this weeks poll ranking respectively. Tennessee State Tigersrunning back, Tom Smith rushed for 66 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns, while Jackson State Tigersquarterback, LaMontiez Ivy, passed for 132 yards, but had two interceptions without a touchdown in the contest.

    The No. 6 Tennessee State Tigers will host Tennessee Tech in OVC action as the Tigers bring a game back to campusin Hale Stadium. The No. 7 Jackson State Tigers will host the Grambling State Tigers (0-3, 0-0) in SWAC matchup that is part of a conference ruling that will actually have Jackson State host Grambling State for three straight years

    based on actions of the Grambling State players boycott leading to the forfeited last season. The Jackson State Tigersreceived 40 points in the poll rankings.

    The South Carolina State Bulldogs (1-2, 0-0) remain at No. 8 and received 32 points, although they lost by a score of30-3 to the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (3-0, 0-0) of the Big South Conference. The Coastal Carolina Chanticleersare ranked in the top five in several FCS polls. Lewis-Fremman as he rushed for 50 yards on just seven carries. The

    Bulldogs will host Furman Paladins* (2-1, 1-0) of the Southern Conference.

    The No. 9 Morgan State Bears (1-2, 0-0) and the No. 10 Howard Bison (1-2, 0-0) both of

    the MEAC enter into the Top 10 Poll Rankings this week. The Morgan Bears solidly pounded, 28-3, their cross town Mid-Major Division rival, the Bowie State Bulldogs (0-2,0-0) of the CIAA. Behind running back Herb Walker, Jr. rushing for 180 yards on 20carries and two touchdowns.

    The Howard Bison reigned supreme in a contest between two historically and culturally rich academic academies, defeating the Morehouse Maroon (1-1, 0-0) of the SIAC, 35-17 in the AT&T NationsClassic. The Howard Bison quarterback Greg McGhee passed for 149 yards and two touchdowns, he also rushed for98 yards on 10 carries and three touchdowns to lead the Bison over the Morehouse Maroon Tigers. The Bears and theBison received 25 points and 13 points, respectively in this weeks poll rankings.

    The Southern Jaguars (1-2, 0-0) and the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils (1-2, 0-1) drop out of the top ten thisweek. There are three teams just outside of Dr. Cavils Top 10 receiving votes. The North Carolina Central Eagles (1-2, 0-0) received 11 points, the Alabama A&M Bulldogs (1-1, 0-0) received nine points, the Southern Jaguars (1-2, 0-0)received eight points, and the Prairie View A&M Panthers (0-1, 0-0) received five points.

    The No. 1 ranked Winston-Salem State Rams (1-1, 0-0) lost their first game of the season, 22-

    17, a rematch of the 2012 NCAA Division II Championship Game, to the Valdosta StateBlazers* (2-0, 0-0) of the Gulf South Conference. In that football contest the Rams quarterback,Phil Sims passed for 146 yards and a touchdown. The Rams earned 109 points and eight first-

    place votes in this weeks rankings. The No. 1 Winston-Salem State Rams will host the No. 8Tuskegee Golden Tigers (1-1, 1-0) in a CIAA versus SIAC matchup of Top 10 teams in Dr.Cavils Mid-Major Division Poll Rankings. The Golden Tigers defeated, 20-12, to the

    previously tenth ranked Albany State Golden Rams, who are no-longer in the poll rankings thisweek. The Golden Tigers placekicker, Trevor Wylie, was big in this contest connecting on twofield goals of 22 yards and 41 yards to finish the game 2-for-2. The Golden Tigers earned 25

    points in the poll rankings.

    The No. 2 Miles Golden Bears (1-1, 0-0) continue to hold onto their ranking position after a tough home loss to the WestGeorgia Wolves* (2-0, 0-0) of the Gulf South Conference. The Golden Bears are open this week before getting back inthe SIAC action next week. Defensiveback, Michael Mitchell, was involved in six solo tackles and four assisted tacklesfor 10 total tackles in the contest. The Golden Bears earned 92 points and three first-place votes this week.

    The No. 3 Livingstone Blue Bears (2-0, 0-0) of the CIAA outscored, 48-45, the Paine Lions (1-1, 0-0) of the SIAC toearn it second consecutive victory on the season. The Livingstone Blue Bears quarterback, Drew Powell, passed for226 yards and two touchdowns in the contest. The Blue Bears earned 90 points in the poll rankings. The Blue Bearswill continue with their non-conference opponents and host the unaffiliated membership program of the Virginia-Lynchburg Dragons (0-2).

    The Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls (1-1, 0-0) enter into the poll rankings for the first time this season at No. 5. TheGolden Bulls defeated Kentucky State Thorobreds (1-1, 0-0), 13-6, and will continue with their inter-sectional matchupversus the SIAC, facing the Stillman Tigers (0-2, 0-0). The Golden Bulls quarterback, Keahn Wallace, passed for 232yards and one touchdown. The Golden Bulls earned 62 points this week.

    The No. 6 Morehouse Maroon Tigers (1-1, 0-0) drop two spots this week after losing, 35-17, to the No. 10 HowardBison (1-2, 0-0) of the MEAC (Major Division) in the AT&T Nations Football Classic in Washington, DC. The sixthranked Morehouse Maroon Tigers will face the No. 7 Central State Marauders (1-1, 1-0) in the Chicago Classic forSIAC contest. Much like the Maroon Tigers, the Marauders are coming off of a loss, 30-16, to the No. 2 TexasSouthern Tigers (3-0, 1-0) of the SWAC (Major Division). The Morehouse defensive lineman, Clarence Christian, wasinvolved in six solo tackles and two assisted tackles for eight total tackles in the Classic game. The Maroon Tigersearned 51 points and the Marauders earned 33 points, respectively in the Dr. Cavils Mid-Major Division Football PollRankings.

    The No. 9 Virginia Union Panthers (1-1, 0-0) of the CIAA fell two positions in the poll rankings after a loss toCharleston Golden Eagles*, 38-21.     The No. 10 Kentucky State Thorobreds (1 -1, 0-0) of the SIAC lost an inter-sectional contestagainst the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls (1-1, 0-0) of the CIAA in the Eddie C. McGirtClassic in Charlotte, NC. The Thorobreds will continue with their second consecutive inter-sectional matchup with a CIAA opponent facing the Virginia State Trojans (0-2, 0-0). TheKentucky State Thorobreds running back rushed for 89 yards on 14 carries and atouchdown. The Thorobreds earned 10 points.

    The Albany State Golden Rams (0-2, 0-1) dropped out of the Top Ten rankings with theirsecond consecutive loss of the early season. There are two teams just outside of Dr. Cavils
