Presidential Ramblings August 2017

This month’s issue brings you accounts of the 2017 National Porsche Parade and HDR’s magnificent performance in the first and one of the biggest events – the Concours and in the Art show. Besides the returning “hardware” (cars) coming back to Central Oregon after the parade, the respect that our relatively small region garnered for its showing, there are important back stories of how members of HDR came together to make certain this Parade would be a memorable one for and the individual members who attended activities. If you have never been to a national Parade and/or a concours, here is a link you can click on to give you more information: https://www.pca.org/concours-delegance.

Months before the Parade the HDR members who were going to Parade as concours participants got together informally to provide input on each other’s cars and preparation. Only one of these individuals, Dave Vadman, had prior concours experience, and Dave provided his insight. [Did you know that the judges will poke their fingers in any opening they can find — including those small drain holes in the bottom of your doors — they can to make sure the inside is clean?] Dave helped everyone acquire the special tools to clean every nook and cranny, but he also helped to establish the expectations of participants from HDR.

Five participants, four rookies, four first place and one second place award, and two group firsts! This was an amazing effort by any standards, but it was truly incredible for a small region without any concours tradition like HDR. Our hats off to the following award winners!

Kudos are also given to Al Kozeleski for his People’s Choice Award winning entry in the 2017 Porsche Parade Art Show for his “Bozeman to Butte” 356B racer. We have enjoyed Al’s artful representations of the spirit of Porsches for years and are immensely proud of his recognition by the larger Porsche community.

Working together did not stop with preparation. When Tim and Sue were towing their car to Spokane in its trailer the driveshaft bearing in their Tuareg catastrophically failed as they were passing through Shaniko, with a total population of thirty-seven! Tim had to arrange for a trailer to take the Tuareg back to Bend, call Kendall to have them get a new driveshaft shipped overnight (it was a Thursday!), and take care of the trailer containing his beautifully prepared concours car. Tim called a brother to get a trailer and towing vehicle for the Tuareg and to go to Kendall to get the parts. A call was placed to Mike Simmons and he headed to Shaniko with his truck to tow Tim’s car and trailer back to Bend — all this as Mike was deep in his own final preparation of his own car for the concours. As the saying goes: “All’s well that ends well.”

Tim, Sue, Mike and Kathy got on the road together, and Gretchen and I met up with them at a rest stop as we all drove to Spokane on Sunday, July 9th. A little excitement, yes, but help and cooperation saved the day.

In a related effort, HDR members hosted many individuals from four different regions in Northern California as they drove through Bend on their way to the Parade. This activity, organized by Sam Davis, included a reception and dinner at the Kendall Carrera Club the evening of July 7, and a tour/caravan from Bend to Spokane on the 8th. The dinner was an unqualified success, as travelers and HDR members alike had opportunity to relax and look forward to the Parade. Most of the visitors were from larger regions than ours, but they were amazed at the Kendall facility we use for our region activities.

The next morning, we assembled twelve cars at the Arrive & Drive location for the drive to Spokane. Sam had arranged lunches for all and, other than 100+ temperatures, the drive was relatively uneventful, and we all arrived in Spokane by 5pm.

At about the same time we release this issue of Downshift; we will be having our New Members drive and BBQ. Reflecting on our growth (68 new members in less than 18-months), and the broad range of interests of our membership, I want to encourage everyone in the HDR family to reach out to our new members. PCA really is about the people, not just the cars, and you may be able to connect with our “newbies” on another level other than that.

Jerry Kolb, President High Desert Region, PCA

Editor’s Notes By Patty Katz

My editorial notes for this issue is to share with you my thoughts and impressions about the 2017 National Porsche Parade held in Spokane, Washington July 9th through the 14th. Jeff and I had a lot of fun. This was our first National parade and with it being held in Spokane, I could also visit my brother. His kids (my nephews) live a short distance away in Post Falls, Idaho. I had a chance to have lunch with them which was very special as a sister and an Auntie!

We leisurely left our home in Bend and drove 6 hours to Spokane in our Macan. We arrived just in time for the first event, a dinner to kick off the Parade. Lucky Jeff won a very one-of-a-kind Pirelli baseball hat. See it at our next dinner!

The next day the Concours was held and it was a very fun experience! What a beautiful (and very hot) day at the Spokane Riverfront Park, where the 1974 World Exposition was held. It was located right next to our hotel and conference center. The beautiful park setting was a great way to display all of the beautiful Porsches.

Our HDR Region was one of few regions who had several first-and second-place awards! Congratulations to all winners! Your attention to detail by showing your Porsche helped put Bend’s region on the national parade map by participating in the Concours.

There are a lot of technical workshops to attend, one of which was a session about participating in an Auto Cross. We (fortunately) did not sign up to participate in one as we were too late in submitting our registration. Learning about the process to be in one of these events can be very interesting. If you go to a national parade, this is a must attend! There is a lot to learn by attending but also by having conversations about the ins and outs of the Auto Cross from couples who have participated.

The Awards ceremony was a lot of fun, and one of the first recognitions they do is to have people stand who have attended a national parade. There were many who were at their first, including us, and when as they asked each year of parades attending, there was one gentleman who was over 90 years old and was at his 44th parade. Mind you, we were at the 62nd national parade! What a joy to see someone still enjoying the parade after attending for so many years.

Our take-a-way from attending the parade is that everyone should go to at least one parade. You’ll find a variety of interesting people who all have one thing in common – their love of Porsches.

In closing, here is a photo of a 1950s spyder going up for sale after the Parade. Guess how much the owner is asking for the car? Ask me or Jeff at the next HDR dinner!

Another View: The Porsche Parade from the Passenger’s Seat

By Gretchen Kolb

“Is there really a parade at the Porsche Parade?” I asked Jerry somewhere on the drive to Spokane.

“Yes,” he responded, “but it is sometime near the end of the week and we will probably be home by then.”

We got up at 6am on the morning of the eighth, ate a quick breakfast and headed in from Caldera to meet up with our driving comrades at the Starbucks arrive and drive starting point. It was only 44 degrees, but the top on our 1999 Cabriolet was down. The top is usually down in the summer, but Jerry had tested it out the day before our trip to make sure it would go up if we ran into bad weather, and the seam at the bottom of the plastic window separated from the top! He assured me that it would warm up soon; however, I am so much of a fresh air girl when it is below seventy degrees.

Twelve Porsches set off on Highway 97 for the parade at about 8 am after a brief drivers’ meeting and passing out sandwiches for lunch. Everything was uneventful until our first stop at the rest area North of Madras near the junction with Highway 197. We intended to go up 197 through Maupin to The Dalles, cross the Columbia, thego east on Washington State Highway 14 to the Maryhill Museum at Goldendale. Fourof the twelve cars that came with us from Bend decided to leave the tour at the restarea and continue towards Highway 97 - thinking it would be faster. As we drove toWA state highway 14 heading toward Maryhill, it became apparent that staying warmwas not going to be my problem.

Lunch on the grounds of Maryhill was a nice break from the drive. We did not have time to view the art exhibit, but the museum itself is beautiful and its location on a plateau high above the Columbia River is breathtaking. Maryhill is also where the tops went up on all the cabriolets in our group except for ours. Jerry was afraid that further damage might occur from the buffeting of the wind, so our top remained down for the trip to Spokane. Except for getting lost for a short period in Kennewick, the rest of the drive was uneventful – and HOT.

By the time we arrived in Spokane we were baked and frazzled. My skin felt so dry I thought it would crack. When I asked about the hotel pool, I found out that the Davenport Grand had “arrangements” with a sister hotel to use its pool. So much for

Page 11: Downshift - High Desert PCALisa Sarmiento Insurance . lisasarmiento@gmail.com. 541-610-6194 Roger Sanders Historian roger@bendfireside.com 541-585-2013 Tim Hagner Zone 6 rep . simtue@gmail.com

the thought of a quick swim or my thoughts of lying by the pool while Jerry pursued his fascination with cars. At least the room was nice.

We awoke on Sunday with the thought that we would have to get in line with about 1,000 other people to register. It was simpler than I expected. Crowded, yes, but everyone was helpful and friendly. Lots of orange shirts reflecting the large number of volunteers who were involved in making the National Parade happen.

We became two of those volunteers on Sunday afternoon as we staffed the information booth. A bit intimidating, since this was our very first Parade! We met some very nice people, gave out information on tours, had information for some questions and winged some others. Our booth was next to the Porsche Classic booth and I “lost” Jerry to a very pretty ivory early 911 on display. We were never overwhelmed and he was better off looking at details on the 911 than munching on the snacks that we used to lure volunteers to their activities.

Sunday was as hot as the previous day had been and we decided to have dinner in an air-conditioned Mexican restaurant near the hotel with other HDR attendees, rather than go to the welcoming ceremony outside in the park next to the convention center. We had good food and conversation, and an early end to our first full day parading.

Monday was a big day. Jerry got up at his usual 5 am and headed for the Concours prep area to look at the cars before they were staged on the field in the Riverfront park across from the conference center. I slept in until about 8 am, then we met and each had a light breakfast at Starbucks before heading to the Concours field. We arrived before the judging began and walked around trying to find all the HDR cars. Understandably, most of the cars were newer, but I found it puzzling that most of the cars on display were painted in bright colors; most of the cars we see in showrooms and on streets, are much more muted in color.

We watched Bren and Shannon Hirschberg’s car being judged. I was amazed at the detail with which the judges took to evaluate their car. One judge had his own little tarp he carefully laid on the grass under the rear of the car, and then wriggled under the car to reach up and around the transmission and axles. The judges poked, probed and looked in every nook and cranny of their car. Looking at Shannon I could see the stress on her face as she intently followed the judges’ movements with her eyes. At least they were the first car judged, then they could relax — or so we thought.

P a g e | 11

It later turned out that the Hirschberg’s car, being a class winner, had to be re-judged by a larger panel of judges to determine the group winner. Bren and Shannon invested over 300 hours in preparing their car for the Concours. They were rewarded by being judged best in their car group. It was not only their first Concours, but they had also built the car themselves from a body with boxes of parts, then totally tracked the car before preparing it for the Parade Concours. Jerry and I are restoring a 912 ourselves, and it was very gratifying to see the judging results for Bren and Shannon.

On Monday afternoon, we went to Coeur d’Alene with Sam and Carolyn Davis. Their car had overheated on Sunday so Sam had a loaner Macan while his was being checked out at the dealer in Spokane. Since the Davis’ and Jerry and I have Macans on order we decided to test drive the car and travel from Spokane for few hours with a visit to its Idaho neighbor. Idaho is kind of a neat place and I’d like to spend some more time visiting.

We had to go to the President’s Reception Monday evening, which was held at the Davenport Heritage. The reception had no special agenda, but the restored old hotel was a beautiful setting for getting acquainted. We spent enjoyable time with members of the host region, Inland Northwest.

Tuesday was tour day for the Kolbs, with an organized tour to Schweitzer Basin Ski Area. The drive was a bit hectic, as it was undisciplined compared to our HDR drives, but we went through some beautiful country and took the chairlift to the top of the mountain for lunch before returning to Spokane.

By the time we got back we had baked in the car through slow traffic and I was ready for a cool shower before heading off for the concours banquet.

The concours banquet is the premier event for the Parade. Somehow, we did not get the message on dress and we showed up under dressed by the looks of those around us. Ah well, at least we weren’t the only ones in shorts. The dinner was surprisingly good, but the program was long. Most of the awards had been presented at the concours, but the group awards were given at the banquet, as well as annual PCA awards. The awards, along with recognition of individuals who had come to many Parades, and other traditional banquet activity meant that the banquet did not end until after 11pm, well past our normal bedtime, especially since we each had volunteer assignments at 6am the following day!

Both Jerry and I had early volunteer assignments at the autocross on Wednesday. It was fun to participate; and helping with the operations made me realize gaps in our own HDR programs. This is something we need to address this coming year. We were done by 9 am and used the balance of the day to regroup – finally having time to visit the art exhibit, pick up things that we did not need at the goody store and walk around downtown. We had dinner with Sam and Caroline Davis and Pete Olsen at a nice little Italian restaurant, and then got to bed early in preparation for the following day’s gimmick rally.

The gimmick rally was fun! Everyone left at 45-second intervals on a proscribed route that ended about 100 miles later in Wallace, Idaho. Along the road there were five check points where you had to get out of the car and roll five dice, pick a card from a deck of cards, and ask the “floozy” at the card table about some “fact” in her life – all which had to be entered on the score card. Then it was off to find the next checkpoint. We made one route mistake (taking Beaver Run Rd. instead of Bear Run Rd.), but it only cost us about four miles.

The roads for the gimmick rally were beautiful. Starting with the Palouse country of Southeast Washington and traveling through the hills and lake country of the Idaho panhandle, before ending in the silver country of Idaho on its border with Montana. Lunch was on our own in Wallace, which was the center of a mining region that produced more silver than any other area of the country, but is now trying to find an answer to all its young people leaving town as soon as they can. Looking at the grand old buildings, one can only hope that the city makes it.

As we returned to Spokane by a more direct route, we planned our return to Bend the next day, and talked about the Parade. We had packed our trip with activities, met new friends from across the nation, taken several memorable drives, seen the inner workings of the PCA, and acquired a bunch of “stuff,” but it was time to go home. There was more we could have done, but nothing that did that we would have wanted to miss. We had fun and look forward to another Parade sometime in the future.

62nd Annual Porsche Parade: July 9 – 15, 2017

By Scott Loring All Photos by Scott Loring

Wowser! What a great event! Something like twelve hundred Porsches and twenty-five hundred attendees from around the country, including Hawaii, joined up at many Spokane Washington hotels along downtown Riverfront Park. The weather was hot and the vibes were oh-so-good!

For starters, our relatively small HDR contingent entered 5 cars and a Tractor in the Concours d’Elegance judging that stretched over the small island encircled by the Spokane river. We won five blue ribbons and a second place! And … two of these Porsches won Best in Class for the entire show!!! (I think my exclamation key is stuck!)

Where to begin…

On Saturday, Sam and Carolyn Davis led a contingent of five HDR member cars along with seven cars from Northern California from Bend to Spokane, Washington. Other members drove up separately and at different times. We had a good representation of 46 HDR enthusiastic members.

The welcome dinner the first Sunday night was really a treat. Everyone sat at tables on the grass of the riverbank. There were five past HDR Presidents and our current leader in attendance along with many first time HDR attendees. This cocktail hour and meal gave a break to those members who had been working all day on their cars in the dark parking garage basement.

Welcome Dinner

The public could visit the preparation area and it was very educational to witness the husband/wife teams wearing headlamps and working happily side by side. (Sometimes!) These beautiful cars were cleaned to white glove perfection for the next day’s roll out to the Concours.

Monday’s Concours required the entry cars to start lining up early. All cars had to be put in place for the 9 am show opening. Of the many classes available, our members entered the following cars: Bill and Cathy Wilson – 1968 912; Mike and Kathy Simmons - 1985 911; David and Maureen Vadman - 1995 968 Cabriolet; Tim and Sue Hagner – 1985 911 Carrera; Bren and Shannon Hirschberg - 1970 914-6; and Pete Olson – 1958 Porsche Tractor. Tim and Sue won a very respectable second place and everyone else won first place! Pretty amazing. The winners had to drive their Porsches in front of a reviewing stand where they were handed their trophy and interviewed. Mike Simmons said he thought it was “one of the most exciting experiences of a lifetime!” You can watch the video on the PCA website. https://www.pca.org/

But that wasn’t the end of the judging. If your Porsche won a Blue Ribbon you were then judged against other winners. And this judging was incredibly thorough and fastidious. Six judges crawled over and under the cars and interrogated the owners for quite some time.

The outcome was then announced at a very impressive and special Concours d’Elegance Banquet that was held in the Convention Center Tuesday night. Six winning cars were displayed during dinner and 2 of them were from the High Desert Region: 1) The Hirschberg’s 1976 914-6 and; 2) the Vadman’s 1995 968 Cabriolet. These two were selected out of hundreds of entries as “Best in Show.” Incredible! Kudos to our intrepid friends who took on this difficult and time-consuming task to face fierce competition and then to come home victorious! That was not the only event at the Parade by a long shot. There were Tours, Timed Trials, Autocross, Tech Classes, Bike Rides, Golf and even an Art Show recognizing selections entered for judging from around the country. So, guess what? That’s right; one of our members took first prize and Best in Show in this competition as well. The talented Al Kozeliski! And last, but not least, our youngest Porsche enthusiast, Hailey Heinrich, won the Junior Radio Controlled Concours with a GT 3RS replica. Outstanding! Finally, we were honored to witness our own Tim Hagner take the stage to speak on behalf of his fellow Zone Representatives in bestowing their special National Award. Aside from his peers he was also joined on stage that night by Wolfgang Porsche who flew in from Germany and other Porsche luminaries. We all agreed that Tim looked very smart in his fashionable suit while making his presentation!

The HDRPCA made submissions for “Region of the Year” and for “Enthusiast of the Year”. While we didn’t receive those awards, we were proud to describe just what our club had accomplished in 2016. And you all know how special our “Enthusiast” nominee, Pete Olson, is. Surprise, Pete! Please take a glance at the following picture gallery. You will see how exceptional this event was and why Porsche is such an outstanding marque! See you next year!
