What is Booting Cancer? SundayJune5thisNationalCancerSurvivorsDay,anannual,treasuredcelebrationoflifethatisheldinhundredsofcommunitiesaroundtheworld.WhiletheincidenceofcancerinAustraliaisincreasing,cancersurvivalratesareimprovingandtherearealmostonemillioncancersurvivorslivinginAustralia.BootingCancerisfunandvisualinitiativeinwhichparticipantscanshowtheirsupportforcancersurvivors,andinspirehopeforthoserecentlydiagnosed,bywearingcolourfulgumbootsonSundayJune5thandthroughoutJune.NotonlyisthisdateCancerSurvivorsDay,JuneisthebeginningoftheAustralianwinterandafabuloustimetopullonyourgumbootsanyway.BywearingbrightlycolourerbootsonJune5th,andthroughoutJune,participantsareabletoraisemuchneededawarenessforcancersurvivorsandfundsforthevitalworkoftheNationalCentreforCancerSurvivorship.BootingCancerhopestouniteAustraliansbyencouragingthemtowearbrightandcolourfulgumbootsanddonatingmoneytosupportinnovativeresearchtohelpcancersurvivorslivehappilyandashealthilyaspossible.Wehopetoseemums,dads,children,workplacesandschoolspullontheircolourfulgumbootsandcelebratethosethathavesurvivedcancer,inspirethoserecentlydiagnosedandraiseawarenessandfundsfortheNationalCentreforCancerSurvivorship.

LocatedatUniversityofNewSouthWales,theNationalCentreforCancerSurvivorshipisAustralia’sleadingintegratedcentreofresearchandclinicalservicesfocusedonrenewingqualityoflifeforpeoplewhohavesurvivedcancer.Untilveryrecently,therehasbeenlittlefocusonunderstandingandmeetingtheimportantneedsofcancersurvivors.TheCentrewasestablishedin2010specificallytoaddressthisgapandhasthebroadaimofbetterunderstandingthehealthissuesconfrontingcancersurvivorsandtogenerateevidence-basedinterventionstospecificallyaddresstheiruniqueneeds.Anindependent,non-profitorganisation,theNationalCentreforCancerSurvivorshipundertakesresearchtodeterminebestpracticemethodsforpreventionofhealthproblemsincancersurvivorsandtreatmentofthosewithestablishedhealthconcerns.TheCentredisseminatesthisinformationtorelevanthealthpractitionersacrossAustraliaandaroundtheglobe,guidingtheirapproachestobettercareforthemillionsofcancersurvivorsworldwide. Withagroupofleadingcancerspecialistsandresearchers,theCentreisdedicatedtobetterunderstandingandaddressingthephysical,emotionalandpracticalchallengesfacedbysurvivorsofadultandchildhoodcancers.Theorganisationsupportspeoplewhoarefacingthe‘Wheretofromhere?’andprovidethesafeplaceandresourcestheyneedtoreintegrateintoandrenewtheirlife.EverydollarraisedthroughBootingCancerhelpstheresearchteamattheNationalCentreforCancerSurvivorshipdiscovernewandbetterwaystocareforcancersurvivors,renewingthequalityoflifeforalmostonemillionAustralians.How Can I Get Involved? ThereareanumberofwaysyoucangetinvolvedwiththeBottingCancercampaignandhelpmakeadifferenceinthelivesofcancersurvivorseverywhere,including:

BecomeaGumbootWarriorWearyourbrightlycolouredgumbootsandeithermakeadonationtoNCCSordosomethingcrazyinyourgumboots,likewearthemtoworkforawholeweekorgoforabigbikerideinyourgumboots,andgetsponsoredbyyourfriendsandfamily.TherearefoureasystepstobeingagreatGumbootWarrior:

2. Createafundraisingpage

Visitourwebsiteatwww.nccs.org.auandfollowthelinkstotheBootingCancerpage.Onhereyouwillfinddetailsabouthowtosetupyourownfundraisingpage.Decidehowmuchyouwanttoraiseandsetyourfundraisinggoal.Youcanevenuploadaphotoofyourselfinyourgumbootsifyoulike!

3. ShareyourgumbootingplanswiththeworldAnnouncetotheworldthatyouarebecomingaGumbootWarriorandhelpingraisemoneyforresearchtohelpcancersurvivorslivehealthier,happierlives.YoucanshareyourfundraisingpageviaemailandFacebook,andofcourse,theold-fashionedway...bytellingyourfriendsandfamilyinperson!

4. AchieveyourfundraisinggoalandhelpcancersurvivorseverywhereDowhateverisityou’veplannedwithyourgumbootsandraisethemoneyyouhadhopedfor.Rememberthemoremoneyyouraise,themoreyouarehelpingtheNCCSfindnewandbetterwaystocareforcancersurvivors.Everydollarmakesadifference.

FundraisingTips

Hereareafewtipstohelpyouwithyourfundraisingeffortsandbesureyouhavethebestchanceofreachingyourfundraisinggoalsuccessfully.

• SetyourfundraisinggoalHowmuchareyouhopingtoraise?Whileweencourageoursupporterstobeambitiouswiththeirtargets,wealsowanttoremindyoutoensureitisachievable.

• BethefirsttodonateThephrase‘leadbyexample’iscertainlyimportantwhenitcomestofundraising.Demonstratethatyoubelieveinwhatyouaredoingandthecauseyouareraisingmoneyforbymakingadonationtoyouronlinepage.Remember,thefirstfewdonationssetthescenetowhattheotherdonationsmightbe–soaimfora$50giftifyoucan.

• ReachouttofamilyandfriendsGetincontactwithyourclosestfriendsandfamilymemberstoaskforadonation.Explaintothemwhatyou’redoing,andwhy,andletthemknowthatitisimportanttoyouthattheysupportyourfundraisingeffortsfortheNationalCentreforCancerSurvivorship.

• SharethenewsatworkBookinatimetositdownwithyourbossandaskfortheirdonation.Thenhaveachatwithothersinyourworkplace,inthetearoomortheelevator,orbetteryet,sendoutanemail.Also,ifpossible,consideraskingyouremployertomatchanydonationsthatotheremployeesgiveyou.Thisisalwaysagreatwayforabusinesstoshowtheyaresocially-mindedandboostyourfundraisingeffortsatthesametime.

• ApproachlocalbusinessesGetintouchwiththebusinessesyouvisitregularly,likeyouraccountant,hairdresser,childcarecentre,cafe,andaskthemforadonationtohelpyousupporttheNCCS.

• GetsocialSharingyourfundraisinginitiativewithasmanypeopleaspossiblewillreallyhelpyouachieveyourtarget.Oneofthebestwaystodothisistospreadthewordonsocialmedia,suchasFacebookorTwitter,whateversiteyouregularlyuse.Shareyourfundraisingpageatleastafewtimesaweekandtellpeoplewhyyou’vechosentofundraiseforcancersurvivors.Youcanalsosendemailsouttocontactsyouhaveinyouraddressbook.

• ProvidegentleremindersSometimespeoplejusthaven’tdonatedtoyourcausebecausethey’veforgottenaboutitorlosttrackoftime.Don’tbeshyaboutfollowingpeopleupandsendingourgentlereminders.Onceyou’vecompletedyouractivitybesuretocontacteveryonethatyouspokewithoriginallyandletthemknowhowyouwent.Ifyouarejustshortofyourfundraisingtargetletpeopleknowandyoumaybesurprisedbyafewlastdonations.
