History
The University of Notre Dame Australia was established by an Act of the Parliament of Western Australia
on 22 December 1989 and a Canonical Statute of the Archdiocese of Perth on 2 July 1991. It is Australia’s
only private Catholic university with campuses in the historic port city of Fremantle, and the former
pearling town of Broome, Western Australia, with nearly 5000 students enrolled in 2005. It offers courses
through its Colleges of Arts, Business, Education, Health, Law, Science and Technology, and Theology. It
has a special relationship with the University of Notre Dame in the United States.
In 1992 the University enrolled its first students – about 70, all of them in postgraduate teacher education
– in its first College, the College of Education. Undergraduate courses commenced in 1994.
The first eight years were a major challenge to grow academically, physically and culturally; to define itself;
to achieve balance and harmony; and to set in place an academic structure for the long term. By 2000 that
was largely achieved. A unique university had been developed in Western Australia. It is distinguished by its
physical setting, its devotion to excellence in teaching, pastoral care and training for the professions, its
relationship with the University of Notre Dame in the United States and its Catholic nature.
2006 will see the University expand into Sydney with a Campus opening in two beautiful and historic
inner city sites provided to it by the Archdiocese of Sydney.
The growth in student numbers at Notre Dame has meant that the University now holds four graduation
ceremonies each year, three on the Fremantle Campus and one in Broome. Each one marks a proud day
in the life of Notre Dame as it honours and acknowledges the achievements of its students.
Graduation Mass
The Mass is the memorial of the death and resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ in which the sacrifice of the
cross is perpetuated. It is the peak of Christian worship and it signifies the unity of God’s people. It is an
action in which Christ, through the ministry of the priest, offers Himself under the species of bread and wine
to God the Father and gives Himself as spiritual food to the faithful present at the offering.
From Understanding the Mass.

“Do not be afraid” (Luke 1:28)
The Processional Hymn Here I Am Lord by Dan Schutte
I the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry.
All who dwell in dark and sin, my hand will save.
I who make the stars of night; I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send?
Here I am Lord.
Is it I Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.
I the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne my people’s pain.
I have wept for love of them. They turn away.
I will break their hearts of stone; give them hearts for love alone.
I will speak my word to them. Whom shall I send?
Here I am Lord.
Is it I Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.
I the Lord of wind and flame. I will tend the poor and lame.
I will set a feast for them. My hand will save.
Finest bread I will provide till their hearts be satisfied.
I will give my life for them. Whom shall I send?
Here I am Lord.
Is it I Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD
The First ReadingRead by Dianne Grinbergs
A reading from the second book of Samuel
Once David had settled into his house and the Lord had given him rest from all the enemies surrounding him,
the king said to the prophet Nathan, ‘Look, I am living in a house of cedar while the ark of God dwells in a
tent’. Nathan said to the king, ‘Go and do all that is in your mind, for the Lord is with you.’
But that very night the word of the Lord came to Nathan:
‘Go and tell my servant David, “Thus the Lord speaks: Are you the man to build me a house to dwell in? I
took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be leader of my people Israel; I have been with you
on all your expeditions; I have cut off all your enemies before you. I will give you fame as great as the fame
of the greatest on earth. I will provide a place for my people Israel; I will plant them there and they shall
dwell in that place and never be disturbed again; nor shall the wicked continue to oppress them as they did,
in the days when I appointed judges over my people Israel; I will give them rest from all their enemies. The
Lord will make you great; the Lord will make you a House. And when your days are ended and you are laid to
rest with your ancestors, I will preserve the offspring of your body after you and make his sovereignty secure.
I will be a father to him and he a son to me. Your House and your sovereignty will always stand secure before
me and your throne be established for ever."'
This is the word of the Lord.
All: Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm Sung: For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.
Second ReadingRead by Felicity Heath
A reading from the letter of St Paul to the Romans
Glory to him who is able to give you the strength to live according to the Good News I preach, and in which I
proclaim Jesus Christ, the revelation of a mystery kept secret for endless ages, but now so clear that it must
be broadcast to pagans everywhere to bring them to the obedience of faith. This is only what scripture has
predicted, and it is all part of the way the eternal God wants things to be. He alone is wisdom; give glory
therefore to him through Jesus Christ for ever and ever. Amen.
This is the word of the Lord.
All: Thanks be to God.

Gospel Proclaimed by Fr Greg Watson, OMI.
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke
The angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named
Joseph, of the House of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. He went in and said to her, ‘Rejoice, so highly
favoured! The Lord is with you.’ She was deeply disturbed by these words and asked herself what this greeting could
mean, but the angel said to her, ‘Mary, do not be afraid; you have won God’s favour. Listen! You are to conceive and
bear a son, and you must name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High. The Lord God will
give him the throne of his ancestor David; he will rule over the House of Jacob for ever and his reign will have no
end.’ Mary said to the angel, ‘But how can this come about, since I am a virgin?’ ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you’
the angel answered ‘and the power of the Most High will cover you with its shadow. And so the child will be holy and
will be called Son of God. Know this too: your kinswoman Elizabeth has, in her old age, herself conceived a son, and
she whom people called barren is now in her sixth month, for nothing is impossible to God.’ ‘I am the handmaid of
the Lord,’ said Mary ‘let what you have said be done to me.’ And the angel left her.
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
The HomilyRev Dr Dennis Rochford, msc
The Creed (Please stand)
All: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
Eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light,
True God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
He came down from heaven;
By the power of the Holy Spirit
He became incarnate from the Virgin Mary and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
5
He suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
In fulfilment of the Scriptures;
He ascended into heaven
And is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
And his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
Who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come.
Amen.

THE LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST
Preparation of the GiftsNaomi Oliver, Jacinta Buhagiar and Celeste McMahon.
Celebrant: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation.
Through your goodness we have this bread to offer,
which earth has given and human hands have made.
It will become for us the bread of life.
All: Blessed be God for ever.
Celebrant: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation.
Through your goodness we have this wine to offer,
fruit of the vine and work of human hands.
It will become our spiritual drink.
All: Blessed be God for ever.
Celebrant: Pray, brethren, that our sacrifice may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father.
All: May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands
for the praise and glory of his name,

(Please stand now for the duration of the Eucharistic Prayer)
The Presentation of the GiftsLord, may the power of the Spirit,
which sanctified Mary the mother of your Son,
make holy the gifts we place upon this altar.
Grant this through Christ our Lord.
All: Amen.
7
The Eucharistic PrayerThe Lord be with you.
All: And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
All: We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
All: It is right to give him thanks and praise.
Father, all-powerful and ever-living God,
We do well always and everywhere to give you thanks
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
When he humbled himself to come among us as a man,
He fulfilled the plan you formed long ago
And opened for us the way to salvation.
Now we watch for the day,
Hoping that the salvation promised us will be ours
When Christ our Lord will come again in his glory.
And so, with all the choirs of angels in heaven
We proclaim your glory
And join in their unending hymn of praise:
Sung by all:
Holy Lord,
Holy Holy Holy Lord
Heaven holds You up high
And the Angels sing unto You
Holy Lord,
Holy Holy Holy Lord
Alleluia Hosanna, oh Lord we sing unto You
You are truly blessed, O God of holiness:
you accompany us with love
as we journey through life.
Blessed too is your Son, Jesus Christ,
who is present among us
and whose love gathers us together.
As once he did for his disciples,
Christ now opens the scriptures for us
and breaks the bread.
Great and merciful Father,
we ask you to send down your Holy Spirit
to hallow these gifts of bread and wine,
that they may become for us
the body and blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
8
On the eve of his passion and death,
while at table with those he loved,
he took bread and gave you thanks:
he broke the bread,
gave it to his disciples, and said:
Take this, all of you, and eat it:
This is my body which will be given up for you.
When supper was ended, he took the cup;
again he gave you thanks
and, handing the cup to his disciples, he said:
Take this, all of you, and drink from it:
This is the cup of my blood,
the blood of the new and everlasting covenant.
It will be shed for you and for all
so that sins may be forgiven.
Do this in memory of me.
Let us proclaim the mystery of faith:
Sung: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again
And so, Father most holy,
we celebrate the memory of Christ, your Son,
whom you led through suffering and death on the cross
to the glory of the resurrection and a place at your right hand.
Until Jesus, our Saviour, comes again,
we proclaim the work of your love,
and we offer you the bread of life
and the cup of eternal blessing.
Look with favour on the offering of your Church
in which we show forth the paschal
sacrifice of Christ entrusted to us.
Through the power of your Spirit of love
include us now and for ever
among the members of your Son,
whose body and blood we share.
First Concelebrant: Renew by the light of the gospel, the Church of Perth.
Strengthen the bonds of unity between the faithful and their pastors,
that together with Benedict our pope, Barry James our bishop,
and the whole college of bishops, your people may stand forth
in a world torn by strife and discord as a sign of oneness and peace.
9
Second Concelebrant: Be mindful of our brothers and sisters,
who have fallen asleep in the peace of Christ,
and all the dead whose faith only you can know.
Lead them to the fullness of the resurrection
and gladden them with the light of your face.
When our pilgrimage on earth is complete
welcome us into your heavenly home,
where we shall dwell with you for ever.
There, with Mary, the Virgin Mother of God
with the apostles, the martyrs,
and all the saints,
we shall praise you and give you glory
through Jesus Christ, your Son.
Through him,
with him,
in him,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all glory and honour is yours,
almighty Father,
for ever and ever.
The Great AmenSung: Amen, amen, amen.

And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
Deliver us, Lord, from every evil,
and grant us peace in our day.
In your mercy keep us free from sin
and protect us from all anxiety
as we wait in joyful hope
for the coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.
10
All: For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and for ever.

and grant us the peace and unity of your kingdom
where you live for ever and ever.
All: Amen.
The peace of the Lord be with you always.

God of life and love, you have created each one of us in your image.
We ask you to bless the Graduands of The University of Notre Dame Australia at this significant moment in
their lives.
Remain with them always and guide them in their life’s undertakings.
May they be pleasing in your sight.

May their thirst for knowledge continue always.
May their families receive many blessings for the sacrifices made and encouragement given.

Australian National AthemAustralians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We've golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.
Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We'll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.

Graduation Prayer(Prayer composed by Monsignor Michael Keating)
God of life and love, you have created each one of us in your image.
We ask you to bless the Graduands of The University of Notre Dame Australia at this significant moment in
their lives.
Remain with them always and guide them in their life’s undertakings.
May they be pleasing in your sight.
May their lives be filled with every blessing.
May they be lights to the world and be the Good News of Jesus Christ wherever they go.
May their thirst for knowledge continue always.
May their families receive many blessings for the sacrifices made and encouragement given.
May Mary our Mother, to whom this University is dedicated, keep watch over them.
At the dawn of creation, you placed a hunger and thirst for love within the human heart.
May this University continue to be a community where the Spirit of Jesus reigns
and the gifts and talents of each individual are prized.
We ask this through Jesus Christ, our hope and salvation.
Amen.
