Secretary’s Report: Still to come: the newRoster, updated competiton rules have beenhanded out, but do not include the new digitalinformation which will have to be included.

Treasurer’s Report: We had a total of$7147.41 as of October 31.

Vice-President’s Report: Annual Banquet:Flyers are out and should be distributed. No raf-fle chair has come forward; at this stage it wasthought that, therefore, there would be no raffleat the Annual Banquet.

Honors Applications were out; so far onlytwo members have applied.

Nominating Committee: We need a VP, aTreasurer, and Print Chair(s). Joan Davidson, currently Creative Chair, must resign from theBoard as she will be moving out of the area.Wendell DeLano offered to take the CreativeChair, but in so doing, has given up the NatureChair. So we also need a Nature Chair.

Competition Chairs: We now have new FirstPlace certificates.

Print Chairs: They have received the annualentries; all files received electronically exceptfrom Photochrome. The chairs requested help inthe processing of the Annual Print Competitionwhich takes place December 9.

FotoClave 2005. There were 150 - 160attendees with an estimated loss of $2000 -$3000. That will be fine-tuned when all billshave come in. There remains the question of thefuture of FotoClave.

PSA: There will be a Joint Chapter Meetinginstead of Asilomar next year.

Electronic Imaging: Larry Salveson of Peninsulamade a quick presentation of his program that isrecommended not just for the N4C joint projectioncompetitions, but for any club using PC equipment.More information is available at peninsulacam-eraclub.com. His program can be downloadedbut it still has not incorporated a thumbnail size forquick comparison after the projection. Larry hopesto have this done in time for the first January jointcompetition.

Information will be given to delegates orthose responsible from each club for submittingimages to the Electronic Image Collector (viz.Gene Albright of Berkeley) directly after theAnnual Slide Competition on December 17 atabout 3:00 pm at Rossmoor’s Gateway ClubHouse, Room #3. All responsible parties areurged to attend.

It was suggested that the pixel size of 1280x 1024 be recommended for submission ofelectronic images in the future to accommo-date the resolution of the LCD screen.

Hardware for the Digital Projection: The con-sensus was that we need first of all a good mon-itor. Ellie pointed out that there is a used highlevel DEL laptop that originally cost $3000,owner asking only about $1000. This will bepursued. The Board agreed that we would beg, borrow or steal a digital projector at least for thefirst couple of combined digital/slide competi-tions, rather than buy one at this stage.

New Business: Marin requested entering astwo separate clubs, one that is only slides &prints and the other which is only digital as theyrun their digital and slide competitions on differ-ent nights. They would pay the extra fees for thatprivilege. The Board voted approval.

FOCUSING AFTER THE FACTTHE PLENOPTIC CAMERA

There is a new prototype camera, designedby a group of Stanford students, that allows youto totally refocus the image after you have takenthe shot. For instance, you can focus on the

nearest member of a group that trails away fromyou and later change it to focus on the furthestmember of the group, and anyone in-between.They have inserted a microlens array between themain lens and the sensor. A LITTLE KNOWN DISTORTION TRICKIN PHOTOSHOP CS2

While rumaging around in my Filters box to try tofind something interesting to do with a graffitti photo, Itried the Distort>Shear filter, thinking to rearrange theangle. By accident, I discovered that the shear graphcan be altered dramatically by clicking with themouse and placing points on it. Then, as in Curves, you can pull the points in different directions whichcan give you total control as to how and how muchto stretch an image.

Here’s how it works:Beginning with this rather mundane pastoral shot, I

opened Filters>Distort>Shear, but first I rotated thephoto 90° because this filter works only right and left

and not up anddown. A mouseclick or two orthree place pointson the shear line.Just pull on themgently until you seewhat you like. UseRepeat EdgePixels. You will findthat you can’tremove the pointsas part of theprocess. You needto exit Photoshop

and reenter to bring back the original straight line in

the Shear menu. Now here is the result:”A LongStretch.” Remember to re-rotate the image.
