SILO THEATRE SEASON
2013
Colonel Mustard is in the kitchen. With a rope. THIS IS A SETup WITH OH-SO-MANy
pOSSIbILITIES. but more often than not we’ll just settle with the easy option and cry Murder. buT THAT’S NOT A CONvERSATION THAT I’M SO INTERESTEd IN. As a punter in an audience,
when I’m presented with possibility, I WANT TO ENgAgE IN A dIALOguE Of ExTRAORdINARy
CONTRAdICTIONS, setup an argument between myself and the narrative, force something to happen in my brain. I MEAN, SOMETHINg HAS TO HAppEN, dOESN’ T IT? OTHERWISE IT’S NOT
THEATRE, IT’S LITERATuRE. pulling a season of work together is a bit like that. It’s open to possibility, but really only works when yOu OpEN yOuRSELf up TO bRAvERy. you might know you’ve lined up Colonel Mustard. buT yOu THINk THE kITCHEN MIgHT bE A bIT TOO dOMESTIC. ANd WE’vE
dONE ROpE bEfORE, HAvEN’T WE? If you’re brave, this problem solving expedition can open up like some magnificent form of liberated alchemy. Seemingly random things
align to establish an identity. THE WORLd AROuNd uS IS bLEAk STREET. THE pEOpLE IN CHARgE fEEL SO
ANTI-fuN. As they work against our interests, it feels like they’re being wilfully dangerous and disruptive. Everything, from public education to our house and home is being sold, bartered and traded off at a bewildering pace, as if money is the only value. INNOCENCE, TOLERANCE ANd gENEROSITy ALL fEEL LIkE THEy’RE up fOR gRAbS. WE kNOW, WE’vE
bEEN fEELINg IT TOO. All of the work in our 2013 lineup deals with the idea of Right Now. They speak with the currency of today. buT NOT IN AN AuSTERE, bLEAk STREET kINdA WAy. There will be the roaring of laughter, seat-gripping shudders of recognition and the
frisson of guilty pleasure. LIfE SITS IN A CONTEMpORARy fRAME. Two stories are set right in our backyard and feel like a homecoming of sorts. Way back when, I found myself at
drama school with two very outspoken, wonderfully opinionated men. bOTH MITCH TAWHI
THOMAS ANd vICTOR ROdgER HAvE SINCE CHANNELLEd THEIR bEAuTIfuL MINdS INTO pLAyWRITINg and I’m stoked to have their work as the two anchor points in our 2013 season. vICTOR WROTE HIS pLAy
ESpECIALLy fOR SILO. I CAN’ T WAIT TO SEE WHAT yOu THINk. The other two works play wildly with form and are total, vivacious little charmers. One is a theatrical experiment that we
can’t tell you much about. IN fACT, ITS pLAyfuL META-THEATRICALITy RELIES ON yOu NOT kNOWINg. “yOu’LL juST
HAvE TO TRuST ME”, HE SAyS WITH A WINky EyE. The other redeploys thirtysomething malaise into rambunctious anarchy. IT’S WILd fuN ANd IT MAdE ME gRIN fROM EAR TO OvER THERE WHEN I REAd IT. bONuS THAT
THERE’S SINgINg IN IT TOO. To all of our audiences who feel so alive to the conversation, we thank you. yOu’RE SO LOyAL , REguLARLy fAITH-LEApINg INTO THE ROugH MAgIC WE TRy TO CREATE. It feels
like you really believe in the power of storytelling, its innocence, tolerance and generosity. you are the most diverse, most engaged, most present audience I have ever known. yOu kEEp THE dREAM Of THE COMpANy ALIvE. There’s a moment in one of
our gigs next year where A pARTICuLARLy ExISTENTIAL pARkINg METER SpITS OuT A RECEIpT THAT SAyS CHANgE
IS pOSSIbLE. ANd IT MIgHT juST bE. While he waits for the amuse-bouche to cool, Colonel Mustard might just use that rope for skipping. Or he might take up macramé.
THE WORLd HASN’ T ENdEd. ANd pOSSIbILITy STILL ExISTS. THIS IS AbOuT NOW.

Whānau, secrets, lies, shame and the challenge of defying Māori tradition.
After twenty years, four estranged brothers are reunited by the death of their father. Bristling with expectation, difference and damage, the brothers
sort through tangled recollections of the past and struggle to articulate their brotherly love in the now. These are lives at the moment of reckoning.
Mitch Tawhi Thomas writes muscular urban poetry and his working relationship with visionary director Rachel House goes way back. In 2003, their Have Car Will Travel gave Silo’s audience a bruising take on the dispossessed.
Ten years on, they reunite to delve into the dark corners of manhood.
Incendiary, brave and authentic NZ drama that commands complete engagement.

Okay. So there’s an actor. And they’ve just opened the envelope. They’ve begun to read and they have no idea what’s going to happen.
They’ve never read this play before. They might be feeling a bit unsettled, a bit under-rehearsed. The audience might or might not clap at this point.
There’s a guy called Nassim. He lives in Iran and he’s 29 years old. And he’s forbidden to ever leave his country. By refusing to do national service, his passport was cancelled. Unable to travel, he’s turned his
own isolation into an advantage. He’s written a play. And it’s navigating the world in a way that he himself cannot.
Holding hands, actor and audience stumble together into the personal and the profound, riffing on the limits of liberty and exploring
where theatre can take you, with or without a passport.
Wildly unpredictable and completely unforgettable, White Rabbit, Red Rabbit is a punch in the air for self-expression; a testament to the
power of words to transcend cultures and borders. You have to be there.

I’ll look after you. I’ll make sure you’re alright. I’ll protect you. Forever.
Those are the words that Garth whispered to his newborn son, all those years ago. But he couldn’t protect him. Something happened.
Xavier is 18 now, on the brink of manhood and going through The Year of Fuck Off. It’s his father’s birthday and all of the family
are gathering to celebrate; it’s time to try and play Happy Families once again in the Campbell household. But nobody knows how.
Caught in a maelstrom of obsessive love and guilt, Garth constantly throws the past back into the faces of his family. He treats Xavier like he’s an only child, ignoring his daughter and dismissing his wife. He just can’t let go.
With astonishing beauty and his trademark lacerating wit, Victor Rodger questions the boundaries of love and the nature of forgiveness.
He detonates the foundations of the modern family. This is a gripping meditation on the past’s ability to hold on to us and how it may just be
possible to find new life within the fallout. Breathtaking stuff.

It rains. People get hot and sweaty. The sex is rubbish. Love is anything but easy.
Helena is a divorce lawyer with a taste for other people’s husbands. She’s in a bar sipping overpriced sav blanc. She’s been stood up by
Mr. Wrong. Again. Bob’s a total shambles, a two-bit petty crim working for a gangster called Big Tiny Tam. He’s nursing a beer and reading Dostoyevsky. She’s totally out of his league; he’s not her type at all.
They absolutely should not sleep together. Ever. Which is why they do.
And so begins their legendary lost weekend; a wild 24 hour spending spree in which our think-me Bonnie and Clyde step out of
their shit lives and reinvent themselves in a haze of bleary magic. This is Bob and Helena’s excellent adventure.
Stacked with rough and tumble romantic comedy and rebellious abandon, this is a lo-fi musical for people who don’t like musicals.
There will be no high kicks and absolutely no jazz hands.
Midsummer is pure outrageous joy.

AMpLIfy yOuR ExpERIENCE
Silo is life in three dimensions. Enhance your experience with new season additions and top-shelf engagement with each production.
preview Kind of like a test drive for a car, previews are early performances where we put our work to an audience for the first time, checking to see that the show’s engine is working at full capacity. You can be a part of the shaping of each production and save money on the way.
premiere For a limited and lucky few, Silo opens the doors to the public on our Opening Nights. They’re a bit more laid back than all that red carpet business, delivered in a unique Silo fashion. You’ll still have an opportunity to dust off those killer heels though, rub shoulders with Auckland’s influentials and attend the exclusive after-match function. We only sell a few of these golden tickets, so best be booking pronto.
Open dialogue We love sharing our work with you but love is a two-way street. Take part in the ruffling of feathers in 2013 with Open Dialogue. In a deliberately provocative alliance of conversation and commentary, a panel of informed types talk the talk about the plays and the challenges they throw up to the wider world. Taking place in the second week of every season, admission is absolutely free. Get involved.
