have members’ names up for consideration ready to present to the General Meeting on 09.07.10.

Old Business:

E-Cards: Arlene reported that she was hesitant to recommend any specific website to provide the birthday e-cards we wish to send to members due to the many virus warnings she encountered. She is still pursuing design ideas and recommendations from the Board. Buck made a motion for Board members to submit de-sign samples to Rick for consideration in possibly creating our own card in a pdf or similar format. The motion was seconded by Ron and moved. Samples should be submitted to Rick by email by 08.30.10.

Hawaiian Festival: Buck reported that there were no difficulties during the event and that once again, HICC greatly appreciated our involvement.

New Business:

Auction: A suggestion was made to possibly schedule the annual auction during the 10.07.10 meeting. Rick will check with Dave Glenn to see if a speaker has been scheduled for that meeting.

Equipment for Liquidation: Rick reported that the wife of KB6RKW, “Blackie” Snodgrass (silent key), may have equipment she would like to liquidate, possibly at auction. Ron will contact her.

D.A.R.C. Anniversary: Arlene mentioned that 2011 would be the club’s 60th anniversary and suggested possi-bly making special event plans.

ARRL Membership and Renewals

Just a reminder to current club members and new members, the DARC will accept new memberships to the American Radio Relay League as well as renewals of memberships. We can provide the forms. When you renew through the club, the club receives a club commission from the ARRL. We know that many members’ ARRL dues generally become due in August because of our past practices in hosting ARRL night at club meetings in August. Questions about this program may be directed to Arlene Schwartz, KE6GFI, [email protected].

September 2010 DX

By Mike Gauthier, K6ICS

8-14-2010

September Propagation Outlook

As we head into fall, the background noise level will start to drop, making hearing that weak one a little easier. Poor DX conditions will remain on 160-60 meters. DX openings on 40 meters will improve during night time hours, but the signals will be weak. 30 and 20 meters could have around-the-clock openings. 17 and 15 me-ters may show little change as the number of sunspots will be increasing 12 and 10 meters will continue to have spotty openings. Follow the sun, grey line, and monitor beacons. If a band seems dead, try a few CQ’s. You never know if the band is open or not, unless you ask.

September DX

CURACAO, PJ2T. 4L5A, Al, reports the PJ2T contest station will be operating from Curacao during the CQ WW SSB DX Contest, October 30/31. The multi-multi team will include K6AM , W0CG , K9SG , N8NR , K8LEE , W9JUV , DF7ZS , DL5RDO and DL5RDP. QSL via N9AG.

GREECE, J48HW. Laci, HA0HW will be active as J48HW from Thassos Island (IOTA EU-174) from August 28 to September 7. He usually operates CW, with some SSB, RTTY and PSK31 as well, mainly on 40, 30, 20, 17 and 6 meters. QSL via his home call sign, direct or via the HA Bureau.

MADAGASCAR, 5R8IC. F6ICX, Eric, is heading back to Madagascar later this year. Look for him to be on the air as 5R8IC from Saint Marie Island (AF-090) from November 15 to December 18. He will be there on holiday and QRV on CW, RTTY and PSK63. QSL via F6ICX.

MALDIVES, 8Q7SO. JK1KSB, Seiji, will be operating from Mirihi Island, Maldives (AS-013) from September 16 to 20 as 8Q7SO. This will be a holiday style operation with activity expected on 3.5 through 28 MHz in his spare time on CW, SSB, RTTY and PSK31. QSL via JK1KSB. NETHERLANDS, PD6MILL. Jelle, PD5JFK and Bernard, PD7BZ will be active as PD6MILL from the ''De Eendracht'' windmill from September 16 to 20. They will be QRV on SSB and digital modes on 40, 20 and 10 meters. • Informative and hard-hitting Product Reviews of the newest radios and accessories from hand-held and mobile FM radios, to home-station transceivers, antennas and even shortwave radios.

• Advertisements. You'll find everything from full-color pages introducing new radios to a large classified ad section.

• Each month's Coming Conventions and Hamfest Calendar columns show you who's getting together every month at Hamfests, conventions and swap meets in your area.

• The Public Service column keeps you up to date on the public service efforts hams are providing around the country and shows you how you can join in this satisfying aspect of our hobby.

• Digital Dimension covers news in the Amateur Radio digital world and includes information on useful Web sites.

• The New Ham Companion section is filled with features and how-to information just for beginning hams. There's no jargon-filled "tech talk"--just straightforward, easy-to-understand articles designed to get you on the air doing the things you like best.

Whether you're interested in contesting, DXing, or radios, accessories and antennas you can build at home, QST covers them all: New trends and the latest technology, fiction, humor, news, club activities, rules and regulations, special events, packet radio, and much more.

Times change and so does terminology. Some of the old terms were quite colorful and convey a sense of hands-on adventure in those early days of experimentation. You may not consider today’s language as evocative, but just wait a few decades to see what future generations think!

1) Which type of component was referred to as a “grid leak”? a. Capacitor b. Resistor c. Inductor d. This referred to a gassy vacuum tube

2) If you used a “basket weave” style in construction, what did you construct? a. Transmission line b. Coil c. Headphone covers d. Detector

3) What function was performed by a “slop jar”? a. Rectification b. Modulation c. Storing charge from a grid-leak d. Filtration

4. What was the earliest type of condenser? a. Tesla coil b. Rheostat c. Leyden jar d. Voltaic pile

5) What part of early stations was often constructed as a “cage”? a. Transmitter shield b. Antenna c. Entire shack d. Power supply

Answers

1) b -- Grid current through the resistor developed a self-biasing voltage. 2) b -- The basket-weave style minimized inter-turn capacitance. 3) a -- Early rectifiers used a somewhat-caustic electrolytic solution (the “slop”) in glass jars.

4) c -- A Leyden jar is a simple capacitor that stores a sizeable amount of charge at high voltage! 5) b -- A cage antenna consists of several parallel wires in a circular arrangement.
