The True Spirit of Field Day

By Bill Heather KB6WKT

2013 Field Day Chairman

Sunday afternoon before Field Day I re-ceived a phone call from Kent K6WCI, and he uttered the dreaded words "we no long-er have the parking lot" due to a schedul-ing conflict. With a sinking feeling that there is a real chance of Field Day not

happening for W6TOI, is when the true sprit of Ham Radio kicks in. With less than a week left before the event, a new site needed to be found or otherwise Field Day would not happen. General Meeting Minutes July 11, 2013 President Rick Norwood, KD6KHJ, brought the meeting to order at 19:32 with 20 in attendance. We commenced with the Pledge of Allegiance led by Rick. Follow-ing the Pledge of Allegiance introductions were done for those that were in attend-ance. Rick, KD6KHJ requested a motion be made to accept the May's treasurer’s report as printed in the June edition of the Q5. A motion was made and seconded and passed unanimously. Rick, KD6KHJ, requested a motion be made to accept the May minutes as printed in the June edition of the Q5. A motion was made and seconded and passed unanimously.

Dave, N6TEB, introduced Wayne Overbeck, N6NB, as tonight's guest speaker. Wayne provided the group a presentation of his current tower trailer, built from a kit trailer. Wayne's presentation showed the group past tower trailers that he built and past and present outings that he has done with the tower trailers. Field Day report: Bill, KB6WKT, provided the group a Field Day report. The preliminary score is approximately 4500 points. The club made a total of 1469 contacts this year. The breakdown is 156 CW, 30 digital and 1293 phone contacts. At the last minute the Club had to find a new Field Day location due to a scheduling conflict that happened with the north parking lot at the First Baptist Church. This year the new location was at Apollo Park and most seemed to like the new location. Buck, AE6DT announced that volunteers are still need for the Ho'olaule'a Days event for Saturday. There are enough volunteers for Sunday. The date for the event is July 21 - 22. Rick reported that John Schroeder, N6QQ, is not available for tonight and will not be available for August's General meeting. Unless someone volunteers to do the raffle for next month there will not be any raffle. Also John is looking for a new raffle chairman due to new commitments with the Boy Scouts. Meeting Adjourned 20:33 hours. Respectfully Submitted

had not 1 but 2 possible locations for the event. The first site se-cured was at Downey Adult School’s back parking lot, however, not our first choice. The second site is at Apollo Park which is our 1

st choice. During the day Buck made contact with Chief Gillaspie

and was advised to visit Apollo Park. So, Buck and Kent went and visited with the Park Director and scoped out a location within Apollo Park. Once Buck and Kent visited the site I was contacted and informed of the location which sounded great! But, now here comes the hurdles that needed to be jumped.

In order for a group or club such as ours there is an administrative process that needs to be accomplished especially adding to the fact that some of us will be staying at the park for 2 nights. There is an application that needs to fill out and proof of insurance pro-vided to the City for the use of the park area. In fact the director reminded Buck and Kent these things usually don’t happen this fast. But once again with the true spirit of Field Day a copy of the application was filled out Rick, KD6KHJ and Frank, KC6YPV, contacted the insurance company for proof of insurance and by Thursday afternoon we had our permit for the weekend.

Friday morning all plans started to kick in. Station mangers started showing up and locating themselves at the site. The generator comes in and the porta-potty people deliver the porta-potty. Stations start setting up their antennas and stations and of course like in typical fashion Friday afternoon had to be the hottest day of the year without Murphy showing up. Will, until the 6th and final plug on the spider box was used. Unbeknownst to me I had connected my radio’s power supply to a 220 volt plug and when I turned it on all the factory smoke came out of the vents. Well once again here comes the true spirit of Field Day. Karl, KF6MDF, and Dale W8RRV, jump in open the power supply and found the MOV's inside the power supply did their job which is shorting out and then blowing an internal fuse. A quick temporary fix was made and the power supply was up and running once again.

Operations on Saturday morning started at 1100 local without a hitch. The Club operated on 80 meters to 1.2 Ghz. This year we had a better representation of the different modes. CW contacts were made on 10 through 80 meters. Digital contacts were made on 15 and 20 meters with phone contacts made on all the bands.

Despite all the trials and tribulations for 2013 Field Day yet once again the true spirit of Field Day comes out which were we instituted a logging program change. For many years the Club used the Scott Davis, N3FJB, logging program. This year we wanted a little more options then was available in the past so we switched to Writelog for Windows. Writelog for Windows offers network logging and also the ability to copy digital and cw modes which Scott Davis’s program does not. Dave, N6TEB, with his experience studied Writelog to make the network worked and Glenn, KE6HPZ, providing the Wi-Fi and internet access for Field Day.

The scores break down as follows:

CW Contacts: 156

Digital Contacts: 30

Phone Contacts: 1283

Total Contacts : 1469

Claimed Score : 3310

Bonus Points: 1070

Total Preliminary Score of 4380 points.
