CATTLE & CALVES Did you know that cattle outnumber Nebraskans 4 to 1 and that 1 beef animal produces nearly 1,000 hamburgers? 5. WHEAT Did you know that an area the size of a football field of wheat can produce 2,500 loaves of bread? (Enough for a family of 4 for 10 years!) 2. CORN 40% of corn grown is fed to livestock but only 1% of corn harvested is sweet corn for human consumption. Corn is found in plastics, paint, and even chewing gum. 6. MILK & DAIRY It takes only 2 days for milk to get from the farm to the store and travels on average less than 100 miles. 9. DRY BEANS Nebraska is #1 in Great Northern Beans and #2 in Pinto and Light Red Kidney Beans. We also raise Garbanzo, Navy and Black Beans. 3. SOYBEANS The #1 customer of soybeans is livestock! Soybeans are also used to make crayons and cleaning products. 7. HAY Hey! It’s true that Alfalfa and grass hay are grown in every county in the state. But it isn’t just for livestock. People eat alfalfa (sprouts) too. 10. SUGAR BEETS There is no difference between beet sugar and cane sugar – except we raise Sugar Beets in Nebraska (mainly in the panhandle). 4. HOGS Nebraska generally ranks #6 in the nation for pork production. Not only does bacon taste good it creates good jobs (11,000 of them)! 8. CHICKEN EGGS Brown eggs come from chickens with red ear lobes and white eggs come from chickens with white ear lobes. (There is no nutritional difference between the 2.)
