Kevin M 4:26 AM Question for the group, as this is the first time it’s happened to me. I was holding the appl 410/415 aug 14 call spread. It was worth about 4.7, so I figured I would let it run closer to 5. At close the sold call got exercised, so now I am short 100 appl. What would people do in this instance, exercise the 410 call to get rid of the short shares? I assume the extra 0.3 is a wash now.

aztecs99 4:33 AM so, you still have the long call, and now short the stock. it'll move the same as the spread EXCEPT the shares don't have any decay. this means that any slow upward movement into next week is probably not going to help you much.

4:34 unless you wanted to hold short shares, I would just close out the trade in two steps: cover the short, sell the call.

4:34 if you want to hold the call, then sell another upside call but u are at risk again

4:36 as information next time around, that final 30 cents is NOT worth waiting around for. in theory it might work, but in reality you have this exercising that can occur. it's because we trade American option styles (exercised at anytime) rather than European style (only exercised at expiration-like VIX).
