Dale has devoted his energy, vision and knowledge to the betterment of our Community. It was a pleasure to serve with Dale over the past two years. It is with great honor that I begin my term as president of our Community. I look forward to working with my follow Board members, the Clubhouse Staff, our committees, and of course our residents. Bob Bradford, Peg Robinson, Chris Wanzer and I want to welcome Jim Angstadt to the Board. Jim has previously served on the Board and as Board pres- ident. As you can imagine he brings with him a wealth of knowledge. As Board members, we are responsible for establishing policy for the Association and for making operational deci- sions. These policies and decisions must be based on the authorities granted by our governing documents and the ap- propriate local and State statutes. Recently, a group of neighbors on Cambridge Place got together to celebrate our new solar streetlight. The light is one of two recently installed by our HOA as rec-ommended by the Operations Advisory Committee and approved by the Parke Board of Directors. There is a storm water management pond at the corner of Cambridge Place and Easton Avenue and residents have been concerned about the possibility of someone missing the turn and driving into the pond which has no guardrails. A solar light was a low cost solution to the problem. The other streetlight was in-stalled on the Ocean Parkway spur. The picture shows residents from left to right, Jer-ry Richards, Carol Sullivan, Carol Weber, Ed Colbert, Gloria Richards, Ron and Mary Ann Tuturice, Syl-via Angstadt, Fred Husman, Jack Perry (holding the “Bench”), Milly Marx, Carl and Mary Ann Ballance, Gus Terrier, Elissa Mulligan and Gail Terrier celebrat-ing under the new Cambridge Place solar streetlight. A dedication ceremony took place to name the streetlight “Bella Luce” preceded by an outdoor Happy Hour to honor the occasion.

Thereisacertainlevelofprofessionalism,consideration,patienceandrespectaswellastheoccasionalswiftkickinthepantsthatisneededinordertoimplementsomeoftheirdeci-sions.ButthisdiverseapproachiswhyIenjoymyjobhereatTheParke.Yes,Isaidenjoy. Asahumanbeing,Ibelievethatwewerecreatedtobeamongstotherhumans.Whetherthatbeafamilybyblood,afamilyoffriends,oragroupofsimilarbeliefsandcommongoals.Let’sfaceit,whenyoupurchasedhereatTheParke,youbecamepartofacommunity,agroupofsimilarbeliefs.Thosebeliefsarebaseduponaneighborhood–alifestyle–aparticularwayoflivingamongstothers.Andwhenweliveamongst eachother, there is a necessityof participationoneachindividual’spart. In a family, different members take on different roles.Backintheday,theroleswereverycommonacrossfamiliesandtodayrolesareverydifferentacrossfamilies.Butinallsuccessfulfamilies,theneedtopromotethecommongoodofeachotherliesatthecenter.Thisisinherentinthedignityofthehumanperson.Sosimilartoafamily,TheParkehastheresponsibilitytoalsoworkforthecommongoodofeachother.Andjustlikefamilies,youhavesomethatcontributemoreandsomethatcontributelessand,yes,eventhosewholiketoshakeitupandmakeholidaysamess!(Youknowwhoyouare……)IttrulyisauniquechemistrythatshapesthisCommunityandIbe-lievethatthisCommunityisgood–trulygoodandhealthy.Itiseasytogetcaughtupinamyopicmanner,focusingononeparticularprojectoraspectthatmostoftenisofadis-appointment.But,thereisgreatvalueinsteppingbackand
openingyourvisiontoseemuchmorethanjustthatoneaspect,toappreciatehowyourmyopicviewmayaffectthecommu-nityasawhole. Thisistheuniqueattributethatisneeded,andcultivated,among thosewhovolunteer in thiscommunity, tomake thiscommunityasgreatasitis…andkeepitjustasgreatyearafteryear! I’dlikeeachofyoutorecognizeeachother(pastandpres-ent) in your roles of Board members, Committee members,communityvolunteerswhichincludesCRR’s,blockcaptains,neighborhoodwatchgroups,helpinghands,thelendinggroup,andIamsurethatIammissingothers.Inaddition,tothoseofyouwhoaregoodneighborstoeachother,supportingeachotherinpersonalwaysthattheAssociationcannot.Andeventothoseindividualswholiketostirthingsup…youkeepoth-ersontheirtoes….andIbelievethatgoodcomesofthisactiv-ity….But–justkeepitinsmalldoses! Iwouldliketorecognizemyfellowstaffmembers–Me-kiaCherone,BarbaraCordrey,TomDeBaugh,andRonInners.Yourindividualpersonalities,strengthsandcontributionsmakethisofficework–andworkwell! TheCommunicationsAdvisoryCom-mitteemeetsthefirstWednesdayofeverymonthat1pmintheClubhouseandisopentoallresidents.TheMayJavawashostedbytheGoodEarthOrganicMarket.Thepresentationontheuseoforganicfoodswaswellreceivedwithquestionsonthecost/benefitsassociatedwith theproducts thatweredis-cussed.Severalresidentssharedtheirexperiencesandsomeresidentscautionedinconcludingthebenefitsespeciallywithsupplements.Allwastakengood-naturedlyandmuchusefulinformationwasgained.ThiswasthelastJavauntilSeptemberwhenourspeak-erwillbefromAtlanticGeneralHospital. DetailsoffutureJava’s will be forthcoming, so look for information in TheBenchoronthewebsite. The committee will be working on the Budget in themonths of June and July to present to the Board. We as acommitteemustdeterminewhatfundsareneededtofulfilltheresponsibilitiesassociatedwithourcommittee,including:ad-vertising,theresidentdirectory,JavaHours,TheParkeBench,website,andtheWelcomeCommittee. Once thebudget ispresented, it isback tobusinessasusual. Wewillstartbyreviewing the2014survey tosee ifweneedtoworkonanyactionsuniquetoourcommitteeortoinformthecommunityofanychangesorprojectswewillbeworkingonasaresultofthesurvey,e.g.,websitetaskforceandClubhouselibrarycommitteeandprocedures.Wehavehadinputfromthecommunityaboutthedesireformorespeakersontheculturalorartisticlevel.Weareat-temptingtoschedulethem;however,wecontinuetolookforsuggestionsfromresidents,sopleasecontactanymembersofourcommitteewithyourinput. TheCommunicationsCommitteeiscurrentlyworkingonamoreefficientprocedurefortheincreasedamountofbooksdonatedtothelibrary.Wewanttothankourresidentwhofor
thepastsevenyearshasfaithfullyassumedtheresponsibilityof“ParkeLibrarian.”Wearelookingintosettingupaproce-dureandperhapssettingupatimeselectionforthedonationstobereceivedandaccepted.Anyfeedbackisalwaysappreci-atedandwillbeconsideredbeforeweestablishanynewpro-cedure. Next year we will be looking for two or possibly threereplacements on our committee. So in keeping with com-municatingwiththecommunity,wewant toaskyoutostepupandbecomeamemberofthecommunicationscommittee.Ourneedwillbeforresidentswhoarebothnon-technicalandtechnical.Thereisfunworktobedonebyboth!!
At theCovenantsCommitteemeet-ingonMay4th,theCommitteeapprovedthefinaldraftsofthedocumentsonus-ingorleasingtheClubhouseGrandHallandother rooms. Thesedocuments in-clude the forms to be filled out by theresidentwhowouldbeusingorleasingtheroomsaswellastheformswiththerulesthatapply,andthechecklisttobeusedbytheCRRorStaffmemberaftertheevent.Thedocumentsalsoincludeinformationconcerninganycatererthatwouldbeused aswell as the caterer’s liability insurance information.TheseformswillbepresentedtotheBoardatitsJunemeet-ing.ThesubcommitteeonbylawrevisionsmetonMay5thandhas another meeting scheduled for May 26that 1pm. Goodprogressisbeingmade.Thesubcommitteehopestohaveitswork completed in time to present to the Board at its Junemeeting. Notincludingthetwodocumentsmentionedabove,theCovenants Committee reported to the Board at the AnnualMeetingthatithadcompletedtherevisionofsixotherpolicieswhichhavebeenacceptedbytheBoardandhavebecomepartofTheParke’soperatingdocuments.Covenants’nextmeetingwillbeonWednesday,June 3rd,at9am.Allresidentsarewelcome.

Trusting More As We AgeResearchersatNorthwesternUniversityhavepublishedtheresultsoftwostudiesthatshowthattrustofotherpeopleincreasesaspeopleage,whichcanbegoodforgeneralwell-being.Thefirststudy,conductedover26years,showedthatolderpeoplehadhigherlevelsoftrustofotherpeoplethanyoungerpeople.Thosestudyparticipantswhohadhigherlevelsofinterpersonaltrustalsoreportedhigherlevelsofwellbeing.Thesecondstudywasconductedtoconfirmtheseresults.Participantswerefollowedforfouryearsandcomparedacrossagegroups.Thisstudyalsoshowedthatinterpersonaltrustincreasedasweage.Thereisastereotypeoftheelderlybecomingmorecynicalandsuspicious,butthesestudiesshowother-wise.Theresearchersdidnotlooktoseewhythismightbe,buttheydidspeculatethatitcouldbeduetoanumberoffactors.Olderpeopletendtobemoreoptimisticandforgivingofthesmallclashesofpersonalitiestheyhavewithothers.Theyalsotendtobebetterjudgesofchar-acter,withthisperhapscomingfromalifetimeofexperi-enceswithbothtrustworthyanddeceitfulpeople.Therecanbeadownsidehowever,suchaswhenaseniorcitizengetsdupedbyafraudstertryingtostealfromthem.Butoverall,anincreaseininterpersonaltrusthassignificantbenefitstooverallhealthandfeelingsofwellbeing.

Allsocialanimalsfromantstohumansrequireacombi-nationofinheritedgeneticimprintedtraitsandenvironmentalcuesthatprovidethenecessarylinkstobindthemembersofanysociety.For“lower”animalssuchasantsandtermites,theprincipalfactorsarechemicalsthatareexchangedbetweenthemembers. For mammals, chemicals can also play importantrolls,thoughinteractionsmediatedbythesensesplayamoreobviouspart. In the early1990’s, aUniversity ofMarylandprofessorand her students investigated an unusual social behavior inamammal, theprairievole:monogamy.Monogamyismostunusualinrodents.Theinvestigatorsfoundthatwhenavolepair firstmated, a hormone calledoxytocinwas released inboth the male and female vole.The levels of this hormoneremained relatively high throughout their lives, and furtherexperimentationhasshownthat thishormoneplayedacriti-calroleintheformationofthissocialbond.*Althoughthereissomeevidencethatoxytocinhasasimilarbutmoremod-esteffectpeople,thereisclearevidencethatthishormoneisresponsibleforthesocialbondingofmotherandchild.Fromtheveryfirstgazeexchangedbetweenmotherandchild,thelevels of oxytocin in both rise significantly.This effect canbeduplicatedwithanunrelatedwomanandnewbornchildbyadministeringthehormoneinanasalspray. Youngchildrenanddogssharesomesurprisingsimilarso-cialbehaviorssuchasrespondingtocooperativehumanges-turesandmakinguseofeyecontactasaformofcommunica-tion;theseabilitiescomenaturaltobothdogsandinfantsfromtheverybeginningoftheirlives.
Thisisnotthecasewithanyotheranimalincludingthosemostclosely related tous.Apes and chimpanzeesneed extensiveexperiencewithhumansbeforetheycanpickuptheseskills. In a recent report, Japanese scientists have shown thatthissamehormone,oxytocinmediatestheremarkablesocialconnection between dogs and us. Like human mothers andtheir children, when a dog and its human owner gaze upononeanother,thebloodlevelsofoxytocinincreaseinboth,andthiseffectistypicallyrestrictedtoasingleperson,usuallytheowner.This happens only with humans and dogs, and withnootheranimal,evenwolvesfromwhichdogsevolved.Youmaywellhaveafavoritecatorparrot,but thelevelof theiroxytocindoesnotchangewhenyouinteractwiththem.Thoseofyouwhohavehadmuchexperiencewithcatswillnodoubtfindthisstatementunremarkable.

During the summer months, your lawn needs more water than Mother Nature will normally provide. In dry weather most lawn grass-es will begin to wilt and then go into a dormant state (turn brown) when soil moisture gets too low. This is a natural process.
