Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I know there is a label “C and E Catholics”, which means those Catholics who come to Mass pretty much only on Christmas and Easter. But it should really be “C, A and E Catholics”, the “A” standing for Ash Wednesday. I say this because I am always amazed on Ash Wednesday to see so many people who I have never seen before present themselves for ashes. Praise God! I find it interesting because everyone knows Christmas is December 25th. While the date of Easter moves every year, there are Easter sales in the retail world to remind everyone that Easter is coming. However, the date of Ash Wednesday moves every year and, to my knowledge, there are no Ash Wednesday sales. Additionally, Ash Wednesday is not a holy day of obligation; it marks the start of a penitential season focused upon more prayer, fasting and almsgiving; and at the Ash Wednesday Mass ashes get smeared on our forehead. So, every Ash Wednesday I am left to wonder, “How do so many people who appear not to practice their Catholic faith on a regular basis know when Ash Wednesday will occur?” What is it about Ash Wednesday that speaks to the masses, (pun intended)? What brings so many people who normally do not regularly practice their faith to Church on a Wednesday? I do believe part of it is the feeling of not wanting to be left out. The ashes on forehead are visible signs of our Catholic faith. However, I cannot help but wonder, and hope, that something deeper is going on in all who present themselves for ashes. I know we are all sinners in need of God’s forgiveness and mercy, so I believe Ash Wednesday is an outer manifestation of our inherent desire to be in right relationship with God. Ash Wednesday reminded me of the wonderful graces God wants to pour out upon His people, whether they are daily communicants or (cough, cough) occasional visitors. Let us all pray that we can embrace all the spiritual gifts God wants to give us this Lenten season and all God’s children will be called into a closer union with Him. Holy Lent! Fr. Jerome

It’s time for the Annual Catholic Appeal!
How do we help a family in need? As Catholics in the Diocese of Sacramento, we have a way to help those truly in need by making a generous donation to the Annual Catholic Appeal. You can live the Gospel message and provide real assistance. Last year 101 of our parishioners contributed $23,912 to the Appeal. The parish received 25% to serve local needs, which was split between SVdP and SDS Tuition Assistance.
Each of our gifts, no matter the amount, really does make a difference in someone’s life. Please prayerfully consider what you can give. Our gifts to the Annual Catholic Appeal are Mercy in Motion. You can make your donation by dropping a check (Appeal envelopes should be available in the pews this weekend) in the offertory basket or return to the Parish Office. God Bless your Generous Gifts!

Ongoing Adult Catechesis
What victory do you need this Lent? How do you deal with temptation? That's the personal challenge given to us by the Word of God on the first Sunday of Lent. And so we begin our journey with Jesus, traveling to the holiest place we can reach at this point in our lives.
This Lent is like no other Lent. Last year, you had different needs, different areas of growth, different levels of insight and understanding. Much has happened since then, and all of it is a preparation for what the Lord is going to do in your life right now.
What victory do you need this year? What needs to be resurrected? To get there, Jesus will lead you through the cross of penance and self-denial, into his tomb, and out into God's light where his love provides healing and new life.
During Lent -- and every time we make sacrifices and connect our sufferings to the Passion of Christ -- we follow Jesus to the cross and to resurrection. This involves seeing our own crosses in a new light, for the Calvary Road is the only way to reach the victories that we yearn to experience.
If we want Easter to be more than just a holiday of colored eggs, chocolate bunnies and big dinners, we have to make Lent more than just 40 days of enduring an annoying, obligatory sacrifice, eating meatless pizza on Fridays, and going to an occasional extra event at church.
If we want to experience the power of resurrection, we have to experience the power of mourning and repenting from our sins. In other words, we have to experience the powerlessness of death -- the death of our selfishness, the death of our worldliness, the death of our behaviors that are not like Christ's.
Questions for Personal Reflection: What can you do this week to die to self? For example, think of a good deed you can do that's the opposite of what your selfishness wants you to do. How will this spiritual exercise make it easier to resist sin?
Questions for Community Faith Sharing: 1. In the story from Genesis, what did Adam and Eve need to die to (let go of, put aside, or reject) in order to resist the Original Sin? Why didn't they? 2. In the reading from Romans, we hear about the abundant grace and the gift of justification that Jesus provided to each of us when he died on the cross. How does this grace and justification give us life? In other words, how does God help us to resist sin? 3. Looking at the Gospel passage, what did Jesus have to die to in the desert so that he could say no to temptation?

1st Week of Lent Justice Challenge: The Gospel recounts Jesus’ experience of being tempted by the devil after 40 days of retreat in the desert. Your challenge this week is to take a look at the power you hold over other people—your siblings, friends at school, your acquaintances. Do you use your power in a holy way? Do you ever abuse your power? Pray this week that you always remember that only God really has the power. Remind yourself that you are called to use the power entrusted to you to serve others in the same way Jesus did.

Spitzer writes on the “Four Levels of Happiness” which he bases on the classical thinkers of Aristotle, Augustine, and Aquinas as well as on contemporary philosophical and psychological thinkers. In it, Spitzer explores the meaning of happiness, the seemingly contradictory desires we can be faced with in life, as well as the causes and levels of restlessness or pain and fulfilment that we can experience. No other book currently available combines such breadth of practical advice and such depth of philosophical, psychological, and spiritual wisdom.

Lent prepares the faithful to celebrate the Paschal Mystery of Christ’s suffering, death and resurrection. It is a time for reflection and spiritual renewal, a time to examine one’s relationships with God and with others. The Church also calls Catholics to a spirit of penance, above all to practice the “Acts of Religion”: fasting, prayer and almsgiving, “which express conversion in relation to oneself, to God and to others.”
Abstinence: All persons, 14 years and older, are obliged to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent, with the exception of Friday, March 17th, St. Patrick’s Day.
Fasting: Everyone, from ages 18-59, is obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Voluntary fasting on other weekdays of Lent, especially on Wednesdays and Fridays, is highly recommended. Fasting is generally understood to mean that one full meal may be eaten, two other small meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be eaten; but together should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Other forms of fasting, especially from alcoholic beverages, needless television, video games, the internet and social entertainment, is a true spiritual value and strongly encouraged.
Prayer: In order to deepen one’s love for Christ, Catholics are urged to read and pray with Sacred Scripture; to study the Catechism of the Catholic Church; to participate in devotions offered by the parish; and to pray more fervently– individually, as families, and in common with others. Opportunities include: Reconciliation, Adoration, and The Stations of Cross offered here on Friday evenings.
Almsgiving: The act of giving to the poor, in the most ancient tradition of the Church, is an expression of penance, a form of piety, a witness of fraternal charity and an expression of Lenten conversion. Therefore, all Catholics are urged to support witness of fraternal charity and an expression of Lenten conversion. Opportunities include: Stewardship to the parish, St. Vincent de Paul, Catholic Social Services, our parish school and other social service ministries.
