Motivation: why a PhD ?

•  To achieve a complete academic career and get an international diploma with a 3 year financed contract

•  To learn and master the research methodology: become an expert ! Develop my skills, improve my knowledge and be critic.

•  To solve a tricky problem I have interest for •  To start a career at the university (professional plan)

A PhD diploma is needed to apply for the position of assistant professor

PhD started the 1 October 2012

My work as a PhD

October 30, 2007 © SKF Group Slide 3

•  Modeling of contact problems: thermal and solid mechanic aspects

contact surface roughness

subsurface inhomogeneities

material microstructure

•  Develop a numerical tool based on advanced techniques to solve these problems

What did I learn during my PhD ? Scientific aspect

•  Learn how to search in the bibliography and extract the information

First phase of a research project Papers, reports, books… •  Improve my scientific knowledge, be creative

and develop my own tool

Learn from the bibliography and the people we work with Define innovative and valuable projects Create or improve tools

•  Ask the good questions and answer it

How to perform validations ? Are the results physically acceptable ? Is it necessary to always go deep in the analysis ?

What did I learn during my PhD ? Administrative aspect

•  Project management - Define objectives and strategies - Schedule - Respect the deadlines

•  Write reports

- Master text editor (word, latex) - Organize theory and results - Write a bibliography

•  Organize and lead meetings

- How to efficiently present work - Present both difficulties and success - redefine things if necessary - be responsible

What did I learn during my PhD ? Become visible worldwide !

•  Write publications

- learn to write scientific paper - emphasize results - receive critics from specialists

•  Participate to international conferences

- get the opportunity of present and defend my work - improve communication skills - share and exchange with experts •  Develop a network - visit colleagues from other universities and create collaborations e.g.: Christian Gauthier, Institut Charles Sadron - exchange with company representatives

What did I learn during my PhD ? Prepare the future

•  Instructorship 192 teaching hours Solid mechanic team: Michel Coret. Seminars: traction, torsion… Prepare the lectures Supervise students Evaluate the students Discussions with the team to solve problems and improve the quality of the seminars •  Training (CIES) Methods for teaching Career plan Be prepared for the assistant professor activities •  Some tools to start a network

A Post-Doc experience

•  2012-2014: University of Twente The Netherlands

•  Supervisor: Pr. Kees Venner head of the fluid dynamic department

•  Funding: FOM (Dutch foundation) and SKF-ERC

•  Objectives: improvement of the model develop during my PhD solve the full contact problem (surface and subsurface) take into account large property variations in the material develop a model to deal with near-incompressible material 2 articles have been published

•  Benefits:

- Discover new methods - Work with an international team - Collaborate with a company - Improve my language skills
