OPTIMIZING THE MAINTENANCE OPTIMIZER TRANSACTION

SAP Note 1940845 provides optimization of the Maintenance Optimizer transaction of SAP Solution Manager 7.1. It can be implemented in all Solution Manager 7.1 systems with a maintenance status of Support Package Stack 5 or higher. No other configuration is required to perform the optimization. When SAP Note 1940845 has been implemented, the Maintenance Optimizer transaction offers new functionality. Implementing SAP Note 1940845 should not negatively affect the generation of stack.xml: calculated target statuses are not changed system-relevantly by the implementation. The focus of the development made available to our customers by SAP Note 1940845 is on UI and performance, particularly the integration of the Maintenance Optimizer with the Landscape Planner, the proceeding planning application for installing products in SAP systems. This document describes the changes which are delivered with SAP Note 1940845. Landscape Planner und Maintenance Optimizer Homepage The Landscape Planner is a new development to simulate, plan and calculate changes to product installations in SAP systems. It allows you to check the availability of the software required, it’s effect on dependent systems, and the validity of information about installed SAP products on a system, before performing the update/upgrade.

Figure 1: Step 1 of a Maintenance Optimizer Transaction

When you have implemented SAP Note 1940845, there will be a link to the Landscape Planner application in the SAP Service Marketplace, in the Maintenance Optimizer user interface. Current information about limitations and support for SAP products by the Maintenance Optimizer, and further Landscape Planner documentation is listed in the Maintenance Optimizer homepage, which you can now also access directly via a link from a Maintenance Optimizer transaction. Change Options The change options for selected systems are shown in a new form in step 2 of the Maintenance Optimizer user interface:

Figure 2: Change Options in a Maintenance Optimizer Transaction

The system maintenance option, i.e. importing support packages, is now labelled 'Support Package Stacks', with the number of selectable stacks in parentheses. Choose 'Support Package Stacks' to select one of the available stacks in the next step, and apply it to your system.

If you only want to update/upgrade or install an add-on, not change the installed stack of your ERP, CRM, SCM, SRM or NetWeaver system, you can go directly from the change options display to the add-on, with 'Add-On Products'. You no longer need to select an ERP, CRM, SCM, SRM or NetWeaver stack first. The handling of add-ons by the Maintenance Optimizer has been reworked for simplicity and stability.

You can select changes to the installed products of a system which are not exclusively imports of support packages or add-ons, under the product name. For example, all enhancement package product versions which can be installed in a system, are collected under the official product name, with the number of installable product versions in parentheses. If, for example, you want to install SAP enhancement package 7 for SAP ERP 6.0 in your ERP system, choose 'SAP enhancement package for SAP ERP' from the change options in step 2 of the Maintenance Optimizer transaction. You can select the enhancement package product version in the next sub-step in the list of enhancement package product versions which can be installed in ERP.

Add-On Products The add-on product selection user interface has been completely revised, whether you go to it directly from the general change options, or via the installable enhancement package product versions selection.

Figure 3: Maintenance Optimizer Add-On Product Selection

The new add-on product selection user interface shows the add-ons intended for installation, which is initially empty, and the directly installable add-ons.

Choose an add-on product version by selecting the field in front of the product version name. The system calculates and displays the current options for this add-on product version. The updated options include the add-ons which require the selected add-on, as well as the installable stacks, instances and technical usages of the add-on.

Choose an add-on product version option. Select instances, technical usages and an add-on stack, and choose 'Apply' below and to the right of the add-on options.

The add-on is added to the list of add-ons to be installed, at the top of the user interface.

Add-on product versions which are already installed, or must be installed, are pre-selected and highlighted in the list of installable add-on product versions, in the user interface.

Database and Operating System Type-Specific Files After the implementation of SAP Note 1940845, software which depends on the type of a database or operating system, is offered by system in the Maintenance Optimizer. The previous Maintenance Optimizer user interface did not allow system-specific selection of this type of software. After implementing SAP Note 1940845 each system is shown explicitly, identified by its system ID and host, to allow selection of software by system.
