Last month’s quiz answer... and winner! Many of our readers were able to correctly identify last month’s mystery landmark as the 18th century ‘round house’ or village lock-up at Breedon-on-the-Hill. The tiny, one-room building is all about security. There is a stout door, no windows, and, because tiles or shingles might be removed from inside by an inmate eager to climb out, a solid stone roof. The adjoining wall is part of a secure enclosure or pound, where stray animals could be kept until claimed by their owners.

This month’s prize has been won by Barry Upton and our picture shows the prize draw being performed by Ibstock Palace Community Centre administrator, Mark Burns (see The Palace events diary on page 13).

Let’s see how well you do with our next landmark!

Local stairlift company Candor Care offer tips to helppeople stay steady on their feetA simple way to help prevent trips and falls around the home is to ask yourself some questions about theenvironment you live in….

1. Do you keep clutter to a minimum, especially around thefloor areas?

2. Do your stairs have handrails, and if not have you considered installing some?

3. If you have trickier areas to navigate around your home, are they well lit?

Here are some of the ways in which you can stay steady and confident…

Keep fit • We don’t mean running the next marathon, but muscle strength is important to help with balance and coordination. Exercises such asyoga and pilates can help (look out for local classes, or head over to YouTube for a free video!). Also consider a light walk or swim.

Stay healthy on the inside too • Eating foods which are rich in calcium and vitamin D help to keep you strong and healthy. Top calciumrich foods include, milk, cheese, sardines and salmon.

Get that check up • Make sure that both your eyes and ears are in tip top condition as both can hinder your mobility and cause accidents.Look out for free eye tests and optical vouchers.

Don’t ‘slip’ up • Slippers (however warm and cosy) can actually be a hinderance if they have a sole without any grip and don’t have very goodstructure to them. Choose a well-cushioned pair that won’t send you flying on the kitchen floor.

Managing Director, Alan Ferguson said – “I visit many elderly people who have experienced trips and falls in their home. This can often lead to them feelingshaken and vulnerable, especially when using the stairs. We want to help prevent accidents around the home and having a stairlift fitted is one solution whichcan provide reassurance and safety”

Whitwick and District U3A will hold its next General Meeting on Friday 15th March. If you are retired and are looking for activities which are both engaging and sociable then the U3A may have the answer as the numerous Interest Groups cater for most tastes. With more daylight and milder weather, there is no better time to share hobbies and interests with like-minded companions all committed to self-help. Groups Leaders and others will be on hand at the General Meeting to answer any questions and pass on information about the opportunities available.

The guest speaker will be David Templeman with the historical topic “Lady Arabella Stuart – The Queen That Never Was”. Arabella Stuart was the granddaughter of Bess of Hardwick and niece of Mary, Queen of Scots. She was brought up in expectation of becoming Queen after Elizabeth I. Her story contains all the elements for a fascinating presentation: exploitation, politics, religion and an exciting romantic escape to France.

To listen to David and find out more about Whitwick and District U3A, come along to St. David’s Church Hall, Broom Leys, Coalville LE67 4RL at 1.45 for a 2.00pm start. Everyone is welcome as the U3A is a non-political and non-religious organisation. Full details of Whitwick and District U3A are also available from the comprehensive website; search online for www.whitwicku3a.org.uk

HOW LONG DO WINDOWS LAST... WHEN SHOULD YOU REPLACE YOUR UPVC WINDOWS?Usually, double glazed windows can last between 18-20 years. This means during the lifetime of the window the energy savings that will be generated will pay for the initial cost of installation, however, the lifetime can be cut short if the window has been improperly installed or is displaying any one of the below signs.

SIGNS THAT A WINDOW NEEDS REPLACING

Damaged or warpedIf your windows are damaged or warped. Then it would be a good time to replace your windows especially if the window has lost the weather seal.

A sign that the weather seal has been damaged is that the double glazed windows condensation within the two glass panes. This may be a problem with the weather seal or, more severely, the frame.

RottingAnother sign that the window is broken or is damaged which may not be obvious is that may be rotting. Rotting usually happens with wooden frames that are old and have been poorly maintained. This exposes them to the elements and leads to the wooden decomposing. A rotting window frame is one that should not be ignored and fixed immediately.

Cold airAnother sign that your window is damaged or warped is that it lets in cold drafts. This is bad for energy efficiency and this indicates that there may be a problem with the window frame. Specifically, the insulation surrounding the frame. Replacing your window would fix this and get rid of the cold drafts that would be entering your home.

NoiseWindows can provide acoustic insulation that is beneficial for enjoying a relaxing evening or sleeping peacefully, however, that relaxing evening or the peaceful can be disturbed if the acoustic insulation is failing. The acoustic insulation provided by windows and deteriorate over time as weather can damage the seal and frame. This is especially true for windows that are wooden or have single panes.

On average, double glazed windows can reduce the noise by 25dB which is a roughly 58% drop in noise. Triple glazing pushes this a 90% reduction.

Get the best online window quote!Getting an accurate estimate of the costs involved in replacing your windows should be something that you do after you have checked whether your windows display any of the above signs.

Couldn’t be happier!I could not have been happier with the way Progress looked after me. I had other companies quote me but were very pushy. Progress did not push me at all and made it clear they had my best interests in mind. Thank you. My windows look great and keep the noise out.

At the tender age of just 14 months, Pumpkin, the skateboarding bulldog is becoming something of a social media star.

The ‘scooting’ pooch, who lives with her devoted owner, Debra Chandler, in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, is taking the internet by storm with her skateboarding skills. Debra says that she has known of other bulldogs that had taken to skateboarding, so she bought one for Pumpkin when she was just 8 weeks old. Although it was really just a bit of fun at the time, Pumpkin immediately jumped onto the skateboard and has progressed from there! Debra has never put any pressure on Pumpkin to perform or forced her to do it in any way. It is obvious to see just how much fun the puppy is getting from her wheeled exploits.

Pumpkin did not, it seems, inherit this skill from her father, 5 year-old Prince, as Debra says that she did try him with a skateboard once, but he showed very little interest in the sport. He does, however, love chasing after Pumpkin whilst she skates around!

Surprised by her pet’s natural ability to perform, Debra took lots of photos and videos of her riding around on her skateboard and posted some of them on to a Facebook page. The page has now received over 700 ‘likes’ and Pumpkin’s fame is spreading! The responses have been really encouraging, with everyone commenting on just how cute she is. Debra is hoping to build on Pumpkin’s on-line presence in the future. Over the past few months people have approached Debra with a view to using the footage, but she is hoping to go down the sponsorship route to further Pumpkin’s ‘career’.

Pumpkin has a public appearance lined up this year, showing off her skateboarding skills at Bulldog Day UK, in Newark. She has also helped to raise money for the Edward Foundation, a charity which helps to rehome rescued bulldogs.

For Debra, the most important thing is that Pumpkin enjoys a happy, healthy life and has fun doing what she does so well!

Super pooch, Pumpkin, scoots her way to YouTube stardom!

KNOW WHAT YOUR PARISH COUNCIL CAN DO ……(OR WHO ELSE DOES)

News from your Parish Council – March 2019

PARKING PROBLEMS – Did you know……….. ? Repeated damage done to grass verges is a huge expense and disruption for lots of people. Neighbours find the mud makes a huge mess, councils can’t afford to repair the damage and it is unsightly for residents.

The Parish Council is trying to encourage everyone to think more carefully about where they park their car. Another problem in Whitwick is that when businesses provide car parking for their customers, they get full of cars being left there while drivers go somewhere else. This stops genuine customers using the business. PLEASE BE THOUGHTFUL.

2 MAY 2019

Do you, or someone you know, have what it takes to be a parish councillor and want to STAND FOR ELECTION? Contact the Community Office to find out more. Local councillors decide on what services and projects the parish council will deliver, as representatives of the first tier of local government you can be the closest to this community. Engage with residents and find out what the real local issues are and how to overcome them. Also try https://www.nalc.gov.uk/our-work/elections for more details.

COUNCIL MEETINGS COMING UP ARE 21 MARCH & 18 APRIL HELD ON THURSDAYS AT 7.00PM AT PARK HALL, WHITWICK PARK, NORTH STREET, LE67 5HB

If you want to know about road works that are happening absolutely anywhere you can find out details and set up alerts that will help keep you in touch - just search: https://roadworks.org

Since 2014 the parks and open spaces owned by the parish council have been maintained by staff from North West Leicestershire District Council. This ends on 31 March so we send a

big thank you to every single member of the team that has

worked hard to make a difference during those years.

Can you solve the clues and spot “THE ODD ONE OUT”?A) A smooth shining iridescent substance forming the inner layer

of the shell of some molluscs, especially oysters, used in ornamentation.

B) The anthropomorphized depiction of time; usually portrayed as an old, bearded man in long robes, carrying a scythe.

C) “The..................of parliaments”; a phrase coined by British politician and reformer John Bright, in a speech given at Birmingham on January 18th,1865.

D) The first Greek god (actually a goddess) also known as Gaia, who created herself out of primordial chaos.

Ashby and Coalville Lions have donated a new defibrillator to Coalville. It is located on the Funeral Director’s building on Belvoir Road and it is hoped that it will benefit all the people of Coalville. The gift has been possible through the generous donations of customers at Morrisons in December and during Santa’s sleigh runs around the area, as well as at other events during the year.

Bob Lilley, Community First Responder and former member of Shepshed Lions, visited the Lions Club in December to train members in CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and the use of a defibrillator in the event of a heart attack. He has raised over £21,000 since October 2017 and has been installing defibrillators in North West Leicestershire – one at Woodhouse Eaves, 10 in Loughborough, 5 in Shepshed, plus one in Nottingham, and most recently the new one in Coalville. He and his team have been involved in training over 1500 people during the same period.

So how do you use a defibrillator? In the event of a collapse time is of the essence. As a bystander you should ring 999 for an ambulance straight away. You will then be told the location of the nearest defibrillator and a code number to access it. If possible one person should stay with the patient and

begin CPR while someone else goes to get the defibrillator. Once the box is opened it is self-explanatory and talks to you, telling you exactly what to do, step by step. You should continue until paramedics arrive and take over.

SURVIVAL RATES ARE MASSIVELY INCREASED FROM 6% WITHOUT USE OF THE MACHINE TO 74% IF IT IS DEPLOYED WITHIN A FEW MINUTES.

If you would like to know more about the project, or have a group interested in learning how to respond to a heart attack please get in touch with Bob Lilley at [email protected] who will be only too happy to arrange a training session, or ring Lynda Allen, President of Ashby and Coalville Lions, on 07735407637.

LIFE-SAVERFOR COALVILLE!

Sunday 7th April sees the return of The Loughborough half marathon and team relay. The 13.1mile course has been described as one of the toughest in the East Midlands. Available places are hotly contested, with only 800 up for grabs this year.

Organised by the Loughborough based charity Living Without Abuse, all the money raised from the event goes towards the charity’s vital and much needed work of supporting men, women and children who have had their lives shattered by domestic abuse.

Living Without Abuse’s Event Organiser Gina King said: “This is the third and possibly last year the half-marathon will use this route and we are hoping for an excellent turnout. We only have 800 places available this year. The run is all on pavements, footpaths and pathways and is certainly tough but a fantastic course through some beautiful countryside.”

This year the charity hopes to raise even more than last year’s figure of £20,000. It costs £400 to support just one person who is experiencing domestic abuse, so the money raised from this event makes a huge difference to people’s lives.

Registration is now open and the entry fee for the half marathon is £26 for unaffiliated runners and £24 if you’re affiliated to a running club. There is also a Team Relay Challenge with four people per team with a total entry fee of £70.00.

The event is co-sponsored by Duncan & Toplis Loughborough, A Plan Insurance Loughborough and the charity’s new headline sponsor for all events during 2019 Arch Communications.

For more information and to enter the event please visit http://www.lwa.org.uk/events/loughborough-half.asp or email [email protected] for an entry form.

The 1620s House in Donington le Heath will be throwing open its ancient doors and welcoming visitors back for the for the 2019 season on April 4. And on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 April, visitors will be able to experience a slice of 17th century life for themselves.

From 10.30am to 4.30pm on both days of the weekend, costumed members of the Sealed Knot Society will be recreating the sights, sounds, smells and activities of the early Jacobean period.

Visitors will be able to see the wealthy family members and their servants going about their business in the house, while outside in the grounds, there will be a tented camp full of early 17th century cookery, crafts and games, as well as weapons and armour of the time.

The 1620s House and Garden in Donington-le-Heath is a surviving example of a family home built in the 13th century and modernised in 1618. The house has been home to many families over its 700-year history, but the Digby family, which included the Gunpowder Plotter Sir Everard Digby, lived in the house for more than 200 years. The house is set in beautiful 17th century style gardens with labelled plants and flowers, an orchard, herb gardens and a maze.

Following the opening day, the 1620s House will be open Thursday to Sunday and Bank Holidays, from 10.30am to 4.30pm, until the end of October.

Admission to the House, Garden and Tea Room is £5.95 adult, £5 concession and £3.50 child on standard opening days, with family tickets

also available. Tickets give unlimited free return visits on all non-event open days for 12 months from the day of purchase. Admission to special events – including the opening weekend - is subject to an extra £2 charge per person.

Cllr Richard Blunt, Leicestershire County Council Cabinet member for Heritage, Leisure & Arts, said: “The 1620s House is an historic gem and we are pleased to be able to welcome back visitors for the 2019 season.

“The House and its gardens, along with its staff and volunteers, help to bring history to life in an educational and attractive way and I would encourage people of all ages to pay it a visit.”

The site is also available for private bookings and educational visits outside normal opening hours.

Local resident and business man, Mr Brian Hall, has been recognised in this year’s New Year’s Honours List. Mr Hall is to receive a British Empire Medal for his outstanding services to the community of Ibstock.

Originally from Birmingham, Brian first came to Ibstock in the winter of 1940, as an evacuee to escape the bombs of the Blitz. Aged just 5 years old at the time, he was placed into the

care of the Hall family, of Ibstock. The young boy found himself, not only taken into the care of the family, but also by the community of Ibstock as a whole. It was Brian’s appreciation of the Hall family and the village of Ibstock that instilled in him the desire to ‘give something back’ to the community that had accepted and nurtured him from such a tender age.

His first community project was the formation of a youth club at Ibstock’s Methodist Chapel, on Melbourne Road. Under the leadership of Brian and fellow locals, Dennis Haywood and Barry Hurst, a football team was soon formed, which was the forerunner of, what is now, Ibstock United Football Club.

Brian has since gone on to be involved with the formation of Ibstock Community Enterprises Ltd, including the development of Ibstock Business Centre, the refurbishment and management of The Palace Community Centre, the National Cycle Network project and the revival of the Ibstock Branch of The Royal British Legion, along with fellow local, Bob Storer.

Mr Hall is keen to stress that these achievements have only been made possible by the scores of volunteers, who have freely given up many hours of their time, over the years.

Last, but certainly not least, Brian gratefully acknowledges the support that he has received from his family, in enabling him to be involved with these community projects.

Now in his mid-eighties, Brian continues to serve the village, taking a very active role both in his own High Street business, ‘Halls of Ibstock’ and the management of the Palace Community Centre.

Congratulations from your friends at the Community Voice. “A well deserved award” in recognition of your contributions to our community and country.

I was promoted to Sergeant and I have recently worked in Eastern Counties covering Oakham, Rutland, Market Harborough, Lutterworth and the south side of inner city Leicester on a rolling 247 service in front line policing.

I have a wealth of experience in community policing and have a passion for problem solving. I have completed a number of projects with those that cause harm and those that need our support.

I enjoy working with partners and the community, being part of what matters to you in your area.

Hopefully you will see myself out and about in the community with the well-established neighbourhood team, please come and have a chat with me and share your views or concerns.

‘SOUL MAN OF IBSTOCK’Last month we followed the story of Richard Reed who was a legendary local DJ – appearing alongside other national and international celebrities from the late 1960’s until 2003. We ended last month’s story where Richard had appeared alongside The Kinks at Baileys nightclub in Leicester (formerly known as The Top Rank Suite) in 1971.

In 1974 Richard took up a monthly Friday night residency at the Town Hall, Ashby De La Zouch, which was so successful that it ran for six years until 1980. As a disco aimed at 14-18 year olds it was a unique monthly event which is still fondly remembered by the people who attended at the time.

Even during his residencies, Richard was also very busy appearing at private parties such as wedding venues and these continued until 2003 when he decided to pack up his sound deck and retire. At one of his last appearances in 2003 at The Charnwood Arms in Bardon, Richard raised £300 for charity and the cheque was presented to Joan Allen and Betty Stiles from Cancer Research UK.

That should have been it – but you cannot keep a good man down and due to demand he started the IBSTOCK SOUL CLUB in 2007 starting at the Ibstock Working Men’s Club in Central Avenue.

The Soul Club moved to Ibstock Welfare until it’s closure whereby it moved back to its original venue at Ibstock Working Men’s Club.

With the demise of the Working Men’s Club the Soul Club moved to its present location at Heather St Johns Football Club and now has a membership of 768 and growing. Such is its great reputation that people travel from all over the Midlands to attend its monthly sessions and in November one of the members, Simon Walsgrave of Nuneaton won the World Northern Soul Dance Competition at The Tower Ballroom, Blackpool – what an accolade!

It is fair to say that due to the success of the club, retirement has not quite worked out as quietly as Richard would have expected but he loves what he is doing so the story is far from finished just yet!

DO YOU HAVE ANY MEMORIES OF RICHARD PLAYING AT YOUR WEDDING PARTY OR SOCIAL OCCASION? PERHAPS YOU MET YOUR PARTNER AT ONE OF HIS GIGS? IF SO PLEASE LET US KNOW YOUR STORY.

IBSTOCK SOUL CLUB MEETS EVERY 3rd FRIDAY OF EACH MONTH AT

A chemical flush can improve the flow and efficiency of your existing boiler and heating system by removing any build up of sludge and scale deposits.

The magnets also remove fragments of steel that peel off of older radiators over time.

Once the flush out is completed (usually within 8 hours) we then re-fill the heating system adding inhibitor to ensure future protection.

HISTORICAL LINKS – WHITWICK FARMSWhitwick has a very long history. The village is first recorded as “Witewic” in the Domesday Book in 1086. This name is a combination of two Old English words. “Wite” comes from the word “Hwit” which means “white” or “Hwita”, a man’s name. “Wic” means a farm, usually a dairy farm. So, this gives us either “the dairy farm of Hwita” or “the white dairy farm”. Either way, “farm” is significant and is the focus of this month’s article from Whitwick Historical Group.

No one can deny the importance of heavy industry and manufacturing in Whitwick’s story but farming has played a key role too. Within living memory, there were farms right in the centre of the village: Hall Farm and Church Farm. The photograph, from the archive at the Old Station, shows two young ladies standing by Hall Farm in the 1930s. On the left is Sarah Moore, a milkmaid, and on the right, Lizzie Paton Berrington. The Berrington family owned the farm at that time. The original Hall Farm was built about 1350 and was sited where Whitwick Methodist Church now stands, at the Market Place end of Hall Lane. The main entrance was close to the Old Vicarage in Silver Street (now Silver Oaks Residential Care Home). Whitwick’s cinema was built on the front field of Hall Farm in 1914. Land belonging to Hall Farm was on the south side of Hall Lane. The farmhouse was demolished as recently as 1971.

The farmhouse of Church Farm is now No.2 Vicarage Street. Road alterations in 1973 cut through the farmyard. A large barn stood between the yard and the narrow entrance to Hall Lane and gave the name “Barn End” to the village end of Hall Lane. For many years, Church Farm belonged to the Jarvis family and their fields were on the north side of Hall Lane. Until farm land on both sides of Hall Lane was sold for housing development, dairy cows were walked from the fields to the milking parlours at Church Farm and Hall Farm twice each day at different times, meaning four journeys by each herd. Hall Lane was a narrow thoroughfare; this must have been a cause of congestion.

Earlier, other village farms included Bonnett’s Farm which was also known as the Fee or Free Farm. This was located at the entrance to the

Hermitage Leisure Centre car park and owned by the Bonnett family for about three hundred years. Much of the land belonging to this farm was sold off for development of brick yards. Readers may be surprised to learn that The White Horse pub in the Market Place was originally a farm with land towards Silver Street.

Farming was labour-intensive in the past and many people researching their family history discover that “ag lab” (agricultural labourer or farm worker) is an employment description on census records. The farms in and around Whitwick were mixed farms raising livestock and cultivating cereals, vegetables and fodder crops. The work would have been hard and demanding with long hours and little protection from bad weather.

Although highly mechanised today, farming remains an industry which is fundamentally linked to the seasons. As spring arrives, it will be easy to spot farmers becoming increasingly busy in their fields as they have been for centuries. Information about the many other farms in Whitwick, such as Glebe Farm and Spring Hill Farm, can be researched at the Old Station where WHG volunteers would be delighted to see photographs or artefacts related to local farms.

The European Orchestral Ensemble with tenor and baritone David Horton and Matthew Duncan Lack were ready to entertain the audience, but the two sopranos had succumbed to laryngitis and were unable to sing. As a result, the planned Strauss concert was going to be impossible to perform without ‘the ladies’.

However, thanks to some quick thinking and rearranging of the whole evening from the producers, the 100 strong audience were treated to some exceptional entertainment, with the Strauss gala taking up the first half, and the second half consisting of outstanding musicianship from Slovakia’s Plachetka Trio playing a variety of tunes from classics through to a Beatles rendition before the full orchestra returned for the finale. The trio, who are part of the European Orchestral Ensemble, all trained at the Konzervatorium Kosice.

A spokesperson for the centre said, ‘We were delighted that we managed to put on an evening of first class entertainment for the patrons who came to support the event. We were really concerned at one point that

the whole thing might have to be cancelled, and thank Theatre Productions Europe Ltd. for working with us to put on a night to remember.’

Please www.charlesboothcentre.org.uk for more information, or follow them on facebook and twitter.

THE SHOW MUST GO ON!They say that whatever happens, the show must go on, and that certainly proved to be true with the charity Strauss Gala held at Charles Booth Centre, Thringstone on 30 January.

If you have already given up on your New Year’s resolution, there is no reason why you can’t try again! With only 8% of us succeeding at our New Years resolutions, this article looks at a few top tips to help you to stick to yours.

Be Realistic – There is no point in setting unachievable goals as this causes unnecessary stress and may overwhelm us making it likely that we will not even try. Setting a goal that is realistic but only a little challenging will help us to take the first step and may lead on to bigger things once achieved.

Break it into little steps – Breaking a goal down into little manageable steps will give you a plan of action. Every time you achieve a little step you will feel good and this will motivate you to carry on and achieve your overall goal.

Knowing ‘why’ will motivate you – Many people have goals at this time of year. They may include stopping smoking or losing weight. It is important that you understand why you want to do these things. If you focus on the ‘why’ – be it to become healthier so you have more energy to run around after your little ones or so you can fit into that lovely dress/suit for your daughter’s wedding – this will be the thing that motivates you and will keep you motivated.

Make it a habit – If we make a small change that may include 100 sit ups a day; make a point to do 10 sit ups every time you boil the kettle. Our brains learn through repetition so the more we repeat it the quicker it becomes a habit; and we all know how difficult habits are to break!

Improve your sleep – Healthy sleeping patterns are essential to restore brain energy and willpower. Having a good night’s kip will keep you on track and focused. If you are struggling with your sleep patterns, it is a good idea to try to stick to a regular sleep and wake time; avoid caffeine after 12pm and limit screen time at least an hour before you go to bed. If you are still struggling; hypnotherapy may be able to help you!

Focus on what you want – our brains don’t really understand the word don’t so if I say ‘don’t think of a pink elephant’ I am quite confident that you are now thinking of a pink elephant! If you say to yourself, ‘I am no longer going to eat takeaways’, you will be thinking about take-aways. Constantly. A subtle shift in focus will make all the difference, instead say to yourself, ‘I am going to cook healthy meals for tea’ or ‘I will choose the healthier option’.

Focus on your achievements – No matter how big or small; celebrate every step of your success. When we achieve something we release

our feel good chemical Serotonin – which is a lovely, natural reward system that will keep you on track!

Be Kind – to yourself! Research indicates that those who overly criticise themselves are less likely to achieve their goals or stay on track. If you do veer off course; instead of berating yourself; have a kind word with yourself. For example, if you scoffed a whole pack of biscuits – ‘I accept that I lost control and ate all of the biscuits, it has made me feel a little rubbish and I will make more of an effort to stick to healthier choices/eat moderately tomorrow’

Phone a Friend – If you have a friend who wants to achieve the same goal as you this can be a fantastic motivator. Naturally, we don’t like to let others down so having that extra person to do it for may make all the difference. It is important to have a friend who will motivate you and give you that kick up the backside when you are feeling like giving up. It’s also nice to have that company and a little bit of moral support.

Hypnotherapy – Research shows that hypnotherapy is highly effective in helping to achieve goals. It increases confidence and motivation and may just give you the boost you need to stick to your resolutions.

Tips for sticking to your New Years ResolutionsBy Hollie Jordan, Clinical Hypnotherapist. Happy Head Hypnotherapy.

Pall-Ex has sped into 2019 by celebrating the successes of its network members at a prestigious awards event.

Members from over 90 haulage SMEs from around the UK were in attendance, along with international partners and quality suppliers, as the logistics giant hosted a glittering awards ceremony hosted by comedian Paddy McGuinness at De Vere East Midlands Conference Centre.

The event rewarded network members, international partners and Pall-Ex staff for a successful 12 months, which saw the firm win a major industry accolade, increase pallet volume and launch new IT software to improve usability, with full consignment visibility and streamlined booking processes for domestic and global freight.

Ilkeston-based PMB Pallet Express scooped the sought-after Depot of the Year award, which was voted for by members of the Pall-Ex network and was based on the firm’s first-class service.

Premier Palletised Ltd, which is based in Wembley, was selected by Group managing director, Kevin Buchanan, for the Outstanding Contribution to the Network accolade.

The company celebrated 25 years in business and a £5 million turnover in 2018, having been launched by managing director and former DJ, Adam Hopcroft, from the bedroom of his council flat.

Regional winners were also celebrated, with ADD Express winning for Scotland and the North, Direct Deliveries winning for the

Midlands, Surrey Pallitz for the South East and Pall-Ex South West for the South West.

Cranleigh Freight, Matthews Haulage and Mars-Jones were all rewarded for being the Highest KPI Performer of the Year 2018 in their respective categories.

Winners were all rewarded due to their commitment to the Pall-Ex network, demonstrated by their compliance, quality distribution, service excellence and communication.

Additional winners include Neill and Brown Global Logistics for Business Growth, DBL Logistics for New Member of the Year 2018, Pall-Ex Romania for Pall-Ex International Network of the Year.

Moody Logistic and Storage received the Staples Award for Delivery Excellence and JT Leyland received the Jelf award for Excellence in Freight Management – two new accolades to celebrate the Pall-Ex’s commitment to ongoing quality partnerships.

Kevin Buchanan, Group managing director at Pall-Ex, comments: “We’re proud to support SMEs around the country and to be able to help them grow through the Pall-Ex network. We value the contribution of every member and international partner and are proud of their hard work over the last 12 months, which has enabled Pall-Ex to secure its reputation as the number one network for quality.

“Our chosen winners are well-deserving of their accolades and we are delighted to celebrate their commitment to providing exceptional service and maintaining the high

standards our network is known for. These teams have gone the extra mile to help us excel and we hope that this celebration will motivate the entire network for the year ahead.

“We are particularly delighted with the contribution of Premier Palletised Ltd who were selected for the accolade of Outstanding Contribution to the Network due to their achievements over the last 25 years. They have been a valued member of our network for 15 years and strive to deliver the very best service.

“Our network shows that by working together, we can win together, and it enables our customers to benefit from a cost-effective, efficient and reliable service across the UK and Europe. We are looking forward to a successful 2019 and strengthening our service over the next 12 months.

“We would also like to thank all our sponsors for supporting this event. Our suppliers are key to Pall-Ex’s growth and future development and without their support events like this one, simply wouldn’t happen.”

Pall-Ex Group was formed by renowned entrepreneur Hilary Devey CBE in 1996 and is an award-winning network of quality hauliers, which collaborate to deliver leading palletised freight distribution services throughout the UK, Europe and beyond. With its headquarters and central UK hub located right at the heart of the Midlands, Pall-Ex has grown phenomenally since its inception in 1996.

You may already know that a growing number of GP practices now employ a range of highly qualified health professionals in their practice, so that they can provide the most appropriate services for their patients.

Many practices have a clinical pharmacist in their team, who is there to sort out day-to-day medication issues and to carry out medicine reviews with patients. These ensure that patients are taking the most appropriate medicines in the correct way. The pharmacist can:

1. Provide expert help with medication for long-term conditions

2. Advise patients who take multiple medicines

3. Give lifestyle advice to help patients get the best outcomes for their health.

Many are also qualified to prescribe medicines.

For these reasons, your practice’s receptionist may direct you to the clinical pharmacist instead of your GP or practice nurse. In the unlikely case that the pharmacist feels you need to see the GP as well, they will usually arrange for you see the GP straight away.

You will of course still collect your medication from your local dispensing pharmacy.

MOIRA FURNACE OPENS FOR A NEW SEASON

Moira Furnace Museum and Country Park @MoiraFurnace

Moira Furnace is a rare survivor of the Industrial Revolution in the heart of the National Forest. Visit us to learn about the furnace’s quirky history in our museum, enjoy cycling or walking in our attractive grounds and woodland, or take a relaxing trip on

our canal narrowboat.

Open April - October Charge for museum and boat.

www.moirafurnace.org Moira Furnace, Furnace Lane, Moira DE12 6AT

A small museum… a BIG story

Moira furnace has lay dormant over the winter however, the staff and volunteers have not had a rest. Everyone at the 19th Century blast furnace, one of the best preserved of its type in Europe, have been busy preparing for what is hoped to be the best season yet.

The furnace museum has seen a change around with displays being moved and re-grouped and a new interpretations board installed to enhance the visitor experience and create a space which will be used for talks and performances in the future. Extra audio experiences have been added to increase the sense of emersion within the lovingly recreated rooms, such as the bridge-loft and the kitchen. As well as this, the Joseph Wilkes, our canal barge, has been refitted with new seats and will be offering a longer, lunchtime cruise. This will be a chance to sit with your picnic whilst taking in the peace and tranquillity of the canal over 45 minutes as you glide down to Donisthorpe and back.

To kick off the season, on Saturday 23rd March, we will be open for a one-off special event. As well as the museum being open and the boat running, we will be welcoming the Coldstream Guards 1815. These Napoleonic era reenactors will be on site all weekend practicing for their busy season ahead. On the Saturday, visitors are welcomed to look around

their encampment, interact with the soldiers and watch as they practice drills and weapons training. If you get hungry, we have that covered. The wonderful volunteers will be running a BBQ where you can buy something to eat and drink.

The official first open day of the season will be Saturday 6th April. Tickets for the museum this year will be £2.50 for adults and £1.50 for children (3 and under free). These tickets will entitle you to unlimited entry to the museum for the rest of the 2019 season so the sooner you buy them the more value for money you can get. Boat trips are charged separately. All prices can be found on our website.

Moira Furnace is a massively important site. It is a perfect example of early industrial revolution blast furnace technology and has been so well preserved due to the lack of good quality iron produced. You can find out more about this in the museum. The grounds play host to a section of the Ashby canal, restored some years ago, a woodland to explore and many paths and trails with areas of importance to the local wildlife. Areas such as our butterfly bank, give vital habitat to many rare species.

We look forward to welcoming you this year and share our big story within our small museum with you.

And the owner of Coalville Furniture Superstore in Belvoir Road would like to thank shoppers in the area for their support since the shop opened in June 2014, saying the business had gained an excellent reputation and customer base, and was very well received by people in the town and surrounding areas.

Company Director Paul Bancroft said: “It is with a heavy heart that we have taken the decision not to reopen the store. The flood, caused by a burst water pipe in March last year, caused damage to stock and in the building. It was devastating to see. It has taken an unbelievable amount of time for everything to get sorted which is very frustrating for a business owner. But with all things taken into consideration we have now decided to permanently close.”

There’s good news for local people on the hunt for home furniture and beds though, as Mr Bancroft runs another company not

far away which has been open for almost 25 years. People in Ibstock and nearby are already familiar with the store, but it is hoped home owners from the Whitwick area will take a short drive to Barwell to visit it.

“We are proud of our family roots at our Barwell business, The Suite Superstore, not too far from Whitwick and surrounding areas. We welcome people from this area to visit us - as a number of customers have already done - for the same excellent service, choice and prices which were well recognised at the Coalville store. And customer recommendation remains extremely positive.”

In the massive showroom in Barwell, there is a huge display of home furniture to complement the fabulous range of three piece suites, sofas and chairs, including dining tables and chairs, electric lift and rise chairs and occasional furniture.

The store has an excellent range of luxury beds from leading manufacturers, including electric adjustable and cool gel beds, with an impressive choice of mattresses to suit people’s preferences and needs. The store also sells bedroom furniture to suit different tastes and budgets, including a range from award-winning manufacturer Rauch.

Customers can enjoy a friendly service, a car park and free local delivery.

Check out the store’s adverts in The Community Voice magazine or the store’s website for more information at www.thesuitesuperstore.co.uk

“I would like to thank The Community Voice for the support this local magazine offers independent businesses such as mine; the magazines are very useful in helping to promote our products and the personal service we offer to the local community,” said Mr Bancroft.

Unisex HairSalon

In recent months following the release of the Ofsted Annual Report 2018 there has a been an open discussion on toilet training; how and when it should be done and whose job it is to start toilet training. There have been growing concerns amongst early years professionals as research shows children are getting older before they start potty training, revealed by a survey by ERIC and NDNA. The annual report also identified the growing number of children starting school unable to use the toilet properly as a big concern.

Purnima Tanuku OBE, Chief Executive of NDNA comments: “It’s clear that parents and nursery practitioners need to work more closely together to benefit children, so no child goes to school unable to use the toilet properly. We aim to empower nursery staff to feel confident enough to speak to parents about potty training. The absorbency of disposable nappies and pull-up pants means that often parents and children don’t notice when they are wet, which can delay potty training. It is important to progress this at the right time. A combination of factors are leading to children learning to use the toilet later.”

The survey also revealed that nursery practitioners feel that parents need more support and 92% believe that toilet training should be a shared responsibility between nursery and home.

At Hermitage Day Nursery we also believe that potty training should be a collaborative effort between nursery staff, parents and carers. We pride ourselves on having a fully qualified team of practitioners who are experience and passionate about what they do; and we are pleased to be recognised as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted in our last inspection.

Our staff work closely with parents to continue the toilet training from home at nursery. The Key Person is in the best position to work

with parents on this somewhat daunting task and share information about a child’s experiences in nursery. They meet the needs of each child in their care and respond sensitively to their feelings, ideas and behaviour. The Key Person will usually be the one to feed, change and soothe their key child and can provide the sense security, reassurance and continuity, needed during potty training.
