Wishing you anUnusual Christmas!Whilst Christmas may have begun solely as a Christian holiday and is often still celebrated as such, peoplefrom all over the world have embraced the festive season and added their own traditions along the way.
Many of our own Christmas traditions are imported from overseas, such as the Christmas tree and even Santa Claus himself. Some traditions seem
unique to particular countries, however, it is impossible to trace the origin of many of them. Most have travelled around the world and been adapted
to suit the country that has elected to adopt them. Father Christmas or Santa Claus is a favourite with our children, but in Austria, children are also
warned about a ghoulish creature known as 'Krampus'. This evil accomplice of St Nicholas is said to wander the streets in search of badly-behaved
children. During the month of December, pranksters don terrifying masks and costumes and go out and about scaring children and adults alike! This
sounds like a rather extreme version of our fairly recent tradition of 'Elf on the shelf'; a toy employed to persuade children to be on their best behaviour
to ensure that they will receive Christmas presents!
The Norwegians also seem to have associated the Christmas period with some of the 'darker' forces. According to their folklore, Christmas Eve is
the day when mischievous spirits and witches take to the skies for mischief and general shenanigans. As witches are often portrayed as using brooms
for their preferred mode of transport, it is traditional for Norwegian families to hide any cleaning equipment attached to sticks so that the witches
can't find them. A great excuse for avoiding any house work during the holiday period!
Where we have baubles and tinsel, Ukrainians trim their trees with decorations that mimic the beautiful natural formation of spiders' webs shimmering
with dew; so not one for the arachnophobes among us! The tradition goes back to a folk tale about a poor widow who could not afford to decorate
a tree for her children. Legend has it that the spiders in the house took pity on the family's plight. They cast sparkling webs all over the tree to the
delight of the children on Christmas morning. Spider's webs are generally considered to be lucky in Ukrainian culture.
Our own old customs are not without their 'darker side'; for example Mistletoe, Holly and Ivy, all Christmas favourites, can be considered unlucky.
This applies especially to Holly, if it is bought into the house before Christmas Eve. So, one to avoid if you are among those who like to put up their
decorations well in advance of the festivities! Tradition dictates that all decorations must be removed by Twelfth Night or 6th January, but any greenery
must be disposed of carefully and not just thrown out of the door or else bad luck will descend on the household. A great incentive to recycle your
real Christmas tree!

From careers to carols – It’s all going on at Ashby SchoolExperts from the worlds of industry and education came together to offer advice to students at one ofAshby School’s most successful careers evenings ever.
More than 1,000 people turned up to the annual event which gives students and their parents a chance to meet and talk to representatives from
scores of local and national businesses and organisations. Advice was available on a range of career paths, including higher education
apprenticeships and the workplace. Sixth Form students acted as ambassadors on the night,
helping to serve refreshments, liaise with industry representatives and give directions to visitors.
Preparations are now underway for another
popular event in the school calendar - the
Senior Citizens’ Carol Concert. This free
event is open to all older members of the
community and takes place on Tuesday 17
December from 3 – 5pm. The afternoon of
festive entertainment will feature a
Christmas performance by school
musicians, followed by seasonal
refreshments served by Sixth Form
students. Entry is by ticket only. Tickets are
available now from the school’s main
reception on Nottingham Road. The event
is kindly sponsored by Ashfield Healthcare.

PACKINGTON & NORMANTON CHURCH LADIES GROUPAround 80 ladies attended the 21st open charity evening at the Packington memorialHall on November 13th. Florist Kerry Evans put together 5 arrangements on thetheme of ‘Flowers for Christmas’ from everyday bouquets that would be purchasedat the local supermarkets.
With the addition of imaginative Christmas extras, attractive but simple containers and helpful tips she illustrated
how anyone could produce an impressive Christmas display. The arrangements became popular prizes for the
raffle which raised a total of £139. The evening concluded with a glass of wine or fruit juice, mince pies and
shortbread. As a result of the event, a total of £400 was raised. This is a record for the charity evening and has been
divided equally between Breast Cancer Care and Prostate Cancer UK.
Thanks go to everyone who helped to make it such a successful and enjoyable evening.Doreen Gasson
Ivanhoe College 'do their bit' for Children in NeedAt Ivanhoe this year we tried something a little different in our fundraising for Children in Need.
Rather than the usual non-uniform day our House Leaders canvassed around the school for students and staff to
bring in loose change, which was collected as part of an inter-house competition. They were particularly successful
and collected £534.50 (plus a few foreign coins!) In conjunction with a cake sale on Friday 15th and selling official
Children in Need merchandise they raised a grand total of £901.14. Well done to all of the students and staff
who were so generous with their donations.
ASHBY REMEMBERS...In the late Autumn sunshine, Ashby and manysurrounding villages came together on Sunday, 10thNovember, to take part in this year’s remembrancecommemorations.
In unison with thousands of communities all over the country, servicemen
and women, both past and present, were honoured in an act of
remembrance and gratitude. Crowds turned out in record numbers to
honour the memory of our fallen and injured heroes. The customary two
minutes of silence and reflection was observed. Many current and ex-
service men and women, uniformed members of the Scouting family and
local officials paraded through the town to the war memorial, where
poppy wreaths were laid by representatives of local organisations.

ASHBY AND COALVILLE LIONS NEWS
IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN,
YOU MAY SEE THESE BOOKS
WHEN THEY BRING THEM
HOME FROM THEIR SCHOOL.
IF NOT, LOOKOUT FOR THEM
AT THE LIBRARY!
During the last month the Lions have given up their time to helpthe Royal British Legion with collections in Coalville and Ashby andhave donated in excess of 150 hand-made poppies to be sold.
They have helped marshal and park cars at Conkers for the firework displays. Club
members have also helped Rotary with Ashby’s Santa Fun Run, before embarking on a busy
timetable of sleigh runs to take Santa around Coalville and surrounding areas, plus Ashby
Tesco. (The schedule was in last month’s issue).
One of the Lions Internationals global objectives is to combat environmental pollution and
to this end, the club’s current project is to donate books about ocean plastic to all 38
Primary schools in our
area. The hope is to inspire
a whole generation across North West Leicestershire to care for their environment
and through that to motivate the wider community about this really important issue.
The author, Ellie Jackson, is a teacher and Amazon No1 Bestselling author. She is
supported by David Attenborough, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince
Charles. She has been featured on BBC Radio and TV News, The Guardian, Metro
and the Mail on Sunday. So far, her books have been translated into over 15 languages
and have reached 800,000 children worldwide. She is supported by many UK national
charities including Surfers against Sewage, Marine Conservation Society UK, 2 Minute
Beach Clean, National Trust, RNLI, the Eden Project and Keep Britain Tidy. Targeting
all the Primary Schools in the area at once is hoped to create a greater and more
powerful impact. Each highly acclaimed book follows a well-loved animal who
encounters ocean plastic but with the help of kind and brave people, is rescued and
released, so the message is strong and positive. Every child can relate to the true stories
with happy endings which bring the issue to the
children’s level without upsetting or
overpowering them.

Here’s another installment in the exciting new series of stories by local author
and illustrator, Rachel Greaves. Keeping in the Ruffle theme, the new tales follow
a toy Ruffle and the adventures he has each month. Read on to find out more…
As before, each month there will be a word within the text. Just find the underlined,
italic letters in capitals then re-arrange them to create this month’s word.
For more information about Ruffle’s storybooks visit www.ruffletheraildog.co.uk
Now available on YouTube – Ruffle’s walks: a series of short video stories
Ruffle lay quietly in the cardboard box
that now sat in the back room of the
charity shop. It seemed a long time since
Ruffle had been part of the Christmas
celebrations then mistakenly packed into
the box sent to the charity shop. It was
very dark inside the box though quite
comfortable. He had only been there a
couple of days when Ruffle heard noises
– people talking And they were getting
closer!
Eager to re-stock the shop, the volunteers
began to open the bags and boxes full
of donations brought in after the festive
holiday. Suddenly light streamed into
Ruffle’s box as one of the ladies opened
the flaps. As she reached into the box
to pull out a warm woollen scarf, Ruffle
Dropped out onto the shop floor. Luckily,
one of the other staff members spotted
Ruffle and reached down as soon as he
had fallen. They picked Ruffle up and
gave him a quick Brush with their hand. Then, having secured a price tag around his
neck, carefully placed Ruffle at the front of the display in the window.
From where Ruffle sat in the window he could see the street and people passing by
the shop: people on their way to work, children on their way to school - and was that a
dog that looked just like Ruffle? Even a horse and Rider trotted past as Ruffle’s bright
black eyes watched the outside world through the glass window.
Then One morning, before the shop had even opened, a child’s face suddenly pressed
up against the window and looked straight at Ruffle. Ruffle stared back, his eyes bright
with curiosity. The same face appeared again later in the afternoon after the shop had
closed and again at the same times the following day. But then on the third day the
face didn’t appear as usual in the morning. Ruffle was Disappointed as he’d grown
used to looking forward to seeing the friendly face.
Later that morning, not long after the shop had opened, Ruffle was gently lifted out of
the window and carried carefully over to the Counter. Ruffle sat patiently as his price
tag was removed. As Ruffle was turned round he saw the little boy’s familiar face from
the window beaming a huge smile at Ruffle. The little boy had gone past the shop
As he walked to and from school but the shop had been closed. It was Saturday so
no school but the boy had to wait until the shop was open before he could go in to
buy Ruffle! The boy stroked Ruffle’s head and ears then examined Ruffle’s red collar
around his neck and the now grubby nametag sewn onto the collar. He smiled when
he Read Ruffle’s name. Then Ruffle was held tightly between the boy’s woollen gloves
and carried safely back to the boy’s home.

IVANHOE The bicentenary of a
novel that helped to shape Ashby ✥ ✥ ✥ ✥ ✥ ✥
What have the following (in a newish estate in Ashby) got incommon: Templar Road, Cedric Drive, Isaac Grove, MartivalCourt, Rebecca Court, Wyvil Close? They have joined the nearbyand older Rowena Drive and Rotherwood Drive. Rotherwood isalso the name of a large house on the Tamworth Road, quarter ofa mile beyond another building once known as Wamba’s Lodge.
The ubiquitous name ‘Ivanhoe’ can be found all over the town: Ivanhoe College, Ivanhoe
Industrial Estate (along Tournament Way), the newer Ivanhoe Business Park; Ivanhoe Terrace sits in what was
known as Ivanhoe Road (now South Street); there are also Ivanhoe Countrystore, Ivanhoe Equestrian and Ashby Ivanhoe
Football Club. There was even, for a while, the attempt to christen the area ‘Ivanhoe Country’, before it was replaced by the Heart of
the National Forest. A clue lies in another Ashby road: Scott Close. By 1819, Sir Walter Scott had written nine novels (four combined in Tales of My
Landlord), often referred to as the Waverley Novels, after the first. Although published anonymously, the author was well-known and famous
throughout Britain. However, the works had all been set in Scotland and dealt with the ‘modern’ period, from 1650 onwards. Ivanhoe, set in medieval
‘merry’ England, opened up the colourful background of tournaments, Robin Hood and Richard the Lionheart. Scott himself regarded the venture
like “the untasted spring in the desert”.
Ivanhoe had the greatest impact of all his books, selling more than 10,000 copies in the first fortnight of publication and subsequently being translated
into many languages. The most exciting chapters were set in Ashby itself and between the town and the hamlet of Smisby. Scott, a great friend of Sir
George Beaumont of Coleorton Hall, had visited Smisby and, allegedly, climbed its church tower, to view Ashby’s castle in the distance. The great
Tournament was set on the meadows below the hamlet (early OS maps marked earthworks as part of the ‘tournament field’; in fact, they are probably
fishponds); whilst Prince John held ‘high festivities’ in the castle. The cast of characters included the Disinherited Knight, Ivanhoe; Robin Hood and
Friar Tuck; the Saxon Cedric and his daughter, Rowena (whom Ivanhoe eventually marries); the Jews, Isaac and his daughter, Rebecca, who also loved
Ivanhoe; the Norman ‘baddies’ Prince John, Bois-Guilbert, De Bracy and Front-de-Boeuf; Wamba, Cedric’s jester and Richard Coeur de Lion. The
novel was published on 18th December 1819 (although the title page has 1820). Two years later, the new Spa building in Ashby was named ‘The
Ivanhoe Baths’. The town owes a great deal to Sir Walter Scott.
Kenneth Hillier (Ashby Museum)
To celebrate the book’s bi-centenary, Ashby Museum’s temporary Exhibition in January and February 2020 will be on Ivanhoe

CARING FOR OUR BELOVED FURRY FRIENDSYou could be forgiven for thinking that familyaffections towards pets are often equal to or greaterthan that of a cherished child. At Pet Deli, in therecently nominated ‘Rising Star’ Award in the GreatBritish High Street 2019, Ashby De La Zouch, weunderstand that more than most. We firmly believethat our pets are not only our beloved furry friends;they are our companions, confidants and for some ofour elderly customers, they are the one reason weget up in the morning. Because of this, we only stockthe highest quality products and items that we wouldwant to give to our own pets.
Over the years, our understanding of great nutrition and high quality
ingredients being at the heart of a dog, cats and small animals well-being,
has meant that the market has been flooded with some of the best
products in the world. This can only be a good thing for our pets… but
what do you buy? What does a nutritional diet consist of? As a minimum,
we recommend our customers purchase feed and treats that are made
with real meat, not a DERIVATIVE. We also suggest that there be NO
maize in a dog’s diet for sure. Maize is used to ferment chickens and
keep them warm. It is put into dog food as a cheap carbohydrate bulker.
But, as with chickens, it does heat your dog from the inside out. Your
dog may have itchy feet, ears and groin area – this is most likely down,
initially to maize in the diet. By removing this cheap product and
replacing it with brown rice, the most natural of rice and/or potato, you
are still giving your pet a low GI carbohydrate, but without the
consequences. Fish is also an excellent choice for your dogs and cats.
The omega rich meat contains lots of nutrition and joint support. The
kibble is also normally quite greasy and so for the fussier pet, this biscuit
becomes more palatable. As we enter the season of good will,
celebrations and stuffing our faces, it is obviously important to remember
not to over indulge with your pets’ treats. Pet obesity is a major welfare
concern according to pet health professionals and 32% of pet owners
surveyed, admitted to ‘guessing’ the correct amount of food that they feed. It may not look a lot in the bowl, but your pet only requires 2-4% of its’
total body weight, per day. Measuring cups are available from our shop on Brook Street, Ashby De La Zouch. At Christmas, as with all our family
members, buying presents for our loved ones can be a mind-field and an exhausting chore. For dogs, we normally purchase chews and treats and
toys. Suitable toys are crucial to keeping your pet safe. When choosing toys for their dogs, owners need to consider their dogs’ size and mouth type,
to minimise the risk of swallowing large pieces. Pet appropriate toys are also vital to a safe gift. Certain cheaper brands can often contain toxic stuffing
or small pieces of plastic. Kong toys are fantastic for heavy chewers. Ancol supply fantastic soft teddy like toys and Hollings provide us with some of
the most natural and decorative bones and treats. All are available now, at Pet Deli Ltd 5a Brook Street, Ashby De La Zouch or can be bought

TWO LOCAL CHARITIES BENEFIT FROM PROCEEDS OF POPPYFIELDS FESTIVALS
Over the past eleven months there have been two PoppyfieldsFestivals and these have both proved very succesful attractingpeople from far afield who were prepared to risk the elements tosee a host of wonderful artists take to the stage.
The proceeds from both festivals have now started to be distributed and our first picture
shows Ibstock Ex Forces Chairman Mark Davenport, presenting a cheque for £1000 to
Mike Thorpe, who accepted this on behalf of the IBSTOCK BRANCH OF ROYAL
BRITISH LEGION. The Ibstock Ex – forces branch have also recently donated an
expensive Monry Counting machine to the Royal British legion which has proved to be a
boon when accounting for all receipts and has also enhanced security.
Both the POPPYFIELD FESTIVALS and the recent MEMORIAL DAY PARADESwould
not have been possible without the expertise of the LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND
4X4 RESPONSE TEAM who were responsible for all the marshalling duties as well as
road safety and management. Our second picture shows Graham Cross accepting a cheque
from Mark for £400 on behalf of the squad.
These donations are only the first and further presentations will be made over the next few
weeks so watch this space! Ibstock Ex Forces would like to take this opportunity to extend
their sincere thanks to all the sponsors and also to all the many volunteers and organisations
who gave up their precious time to ensure the event was a success.

Amicus Social Organisation is a large title for small, effective social group for single people who are looking to move on following a bereavement, divorce or any event that has left them on their own.
We would emphasise that Amicus is not a dating agency with computer dating often being ‘soulless’ which sometimes leads to abuse of trust
and disappointment. Amicus offers a positive alternative to this and a generally better experience.
Founded on New Years Eve, 1995, Amicus exists for the benefit of single people, mostly for the over 40s though we welcome people from
any age group. It’s a great way for people to get some ‘normality’ back into their lives and after a short period of time it is always wonderful
to see individuals grow in confidence. As a group we are always there for one another, and should any problems arise, there is always an
experienced person on hand to offer support or simply just to listen.
We enjoy a wide variety of low-budget
events including; visits to country houses,
walks and live band performances. Many of
our members admit that they would not have
undertaken these pursuits on their own.
Every fortnight, we meet in a local hotel or
pub for drinks, friendly discussion and good
company. On alternate weekends we enjoy a
planned event or an evening out, dependent
upon the season. We operate a ‘car share’
system, as some of the events can take you
to Nottingham, Derby and further afield.
To meet up with group, please contact us by
telephone or email and we will send you a
programme of events for your consideration.
An initial drinks evening will give you the
opportunity to find out more about us. But
beware! Once tried Amicus can be addictive
so come along and see what you have been
missing!

THE SOCIAL
ORGANISATION
FOR SINGLE PEOPLE
Founded in 1995 and covering Leicestershire, South Derbyshire and South Notts, Amicus are a small social group for single, divorced, legally separated or bereaved people.
We are NOT a ‘dating agency’ or a social ‘pick-up’ singles night. We meet weekly with a programme of events to suit a single persons budget.
• Meeting weekly, we have a two month programme of events.
• Drinks evening on alternate Fridays at a local hotel.
• Alternate Saturdays, events are organised at various venues.
