Everyone here at the Community Voice is delighted to announce that from the beginning of October we will be introducing a new edition of our magazine dedicated to the people of Coalville.

We are very excited about our latest publication, which we feel will soon be taken to the hearts of the people of this great town. Following numerous enquiries from our regular advertisers, it was apparent that Coalville was the obvious choice for a new magazine and, with an initial distribution of 6,000, this will bring our total monthly distribution figures for all four magazines up to 26,000. Our existing working relationship with Hermitage FM Radio Station will also be enhanced by this expansion.

This will undoubtedly make us the largest distributor in North West Leicestershire and Market Bosworth and an ideal platform for businesses to advertise their services or products. For people wanting targeted leaflet distribution we also offer one of the cheapest rates in the area.

Our current three magazines have proved to be extremely popular with their interesting mix of stories about local history, events, charities and local characters, plus our popular monthly competitions with cash prizes. We look forward to hearing from the people of Coalville about their impressions of the magazine and suggestions about new features they would like to see included. With the regeneration of Coalville gathering pace, we hope that our new magazine can offer a positive contribution towards this and that, despite all the set backs of the last few months, the town can now look forward to a prosperous future. The Community Voice Team

STRUGGLING FOR STORAGE SPACE IN YOUR HOME?

We are living in strange times. The Covid-19 pandemic has put us all in ‘lockdown’, unable to go about our normal life. We have been at home, baking more, exercising less and possibly getting bigger (‘the Covid waistline’).

We hear on the news that obesity and underlying health conditions are factors in the increased risk of death from Covid-19. Almost two thirds of adults in England are overweight or obese and 50% of our diet is from highly processed foods. Sadly children are becoming obese increasingly younger and many are suffering from diabetes type 2 (formerly known as adult-onset diabetes). The case for losing weight has never been stronger.

The government plans to ban ‘Buy one get one free’ deals and junk food adverts before 9 pm, and bring in calorie information on menus. Will this be enough? Probably not.

Lots of us have tried dieting in the past (myself included) - counting calories, measuring portions, watching carbohydrates – with varied success, often putting the weight back on again afterwards.

So what can we do? Actually, quite a lot – just by changing what we eat!

Scientific evidence now shows that by eating whole plant foods in place of animal products

we can become healthier and slimmer without dieting.

This is because whole plant foods (fruits, vegetables, beans, whole grains and nuts) all contain fibre which the body needs to keep us feeling full with less cravings, keep things moving and reduce the risk of colorectal cancer, lower cholesterol, stabilise blood sugar and enhance our immune function.

Wow! Remember that saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”? Well it certainly helps!

In 1960, the Infant School was situated on Grange Road and in September, the start of the new school year, the doors opened for the new intake of children. At that time, children started school in the term after their 5th birthday. The school comprised of three classrooms and in the top classroom there was a little office partition for the Headteacher Mrs Hutchinson and Mrs Shilcock, who was the school secretary.

The teacher of Class 1 was Mrs De Vere and on that first day she welcomed in the children and each were given a little badge with their name on. This would have been the first time the children had been inside the school, as there were no introduction days as there are now.

Mrs De Vere was the right sort of person for an Infant School teacher, kind and gentle but very firm. Woe betide anyone who misbehaved, they would surely find themselves standing in the corner with their face to the wall!

To the children 60 years ago the classroom would have looked as interesting as they do nowadays. The children were introduced to a myriad of new experiences, along with the reading, writing and arithmetic. A favourite was the Nature Table, where the children could bring in something natural to display and at that time of year the table would be a variety of colours with autumn leaves, conkers, acorns, blackberries all showing the sights and smells of the season.

Children were encouraged to play as they learnt in the sand and water tray, in the painting corner, in the home corner and sitting on the big cushions in front of the bookcase full of fairy tales and Janet and John books. Milk and biscuits would be served at playtime and most children went home for lunch. Those that were staying at school would be accompanied on their walk up to the Scout Hut at the bottom of Leicester Road for dinner.

The afternoons for the little ones started with soft music and a story on the radio, where each child would lay their hands on the desks on which to rest the head and with eyes closed would quietly listen and even go to sleep.

Does this school day sound familiar? Were you a singer or a growler? Something all children who went to St Denys Infant School at that time will relate to!

St Denys C of E Infant SchoolNew Starters in September 1960

Please don’t arrive early for your appointmentWe are doing lots of face to face appointments again and in order to minimise numbers in the building to ensure that our practices is as safe as possible, we would respectfully ask patients not to arrive early for your appointment. Thank you for your co-operation with this.

Morning nursing appointmentsDue to Covid our clinicians have to wear and change PPE and wipe down between patients to keep everyone safe. This means our face to face appointments take longer than they used to. As we still have the same number of staff this means we have fewer appointments overall, in particular for blood tests, which can only be done face to face. Our blood tests are collected late morning to be taken to the laboratory for processing, a time which beyond our control. Most blood tests have to be processed the same day, they can’t be kept overnight. So in order to ensure we can do as many blood tests as possible, we are reserving all our morning slots with our health care assistants for blood tests which need processing at the laboratory. This means we will be asking patients to come in the afternoon for INR tests, injections and anything else which doesn’t involve sending to the laboratory. I hope patients will understand that this is for the benefit of all patients. Thank you for your understanding with this. Traditional Values, Modern Healthcare

Here’s another installment in the exciting new series of stories by local author and illustrator, Rachel Greaves. Keeping in the Ruffle theme, the new tales follow a toy Ruffle and the adventures he has each month. Read on to find out more…

As before, each month there will be a word within the text. Just find the underlined, italic letters in capitals then re-arrange them to create this month’s word.

For more information about Ruffle’s storybooks visit www.ruffletheraildog.co.uk

Now available on YouTube – Ruffle’s walks: a series of short video stories

®

Try the Ruffle “Find the word” competition - this month’s word has 8 letters. The answer is on the inside back cover.

For further information about Ruffle’s story books and other adventures visit www.ruffletheraildog.co.uk or watch the new series of short films on YouTube under ‘Ruffle’s Walks’.

Bert and Mavis, the park keeper and his wife, were blessed with two grandchildren who loved spending time with their grandparents. A few days after Bert had found Ruffle on the park bench and brought him home, the grandchildren visited - eagerly anticipating a day of fun and laughter. As always, they had managed to bring with them an array of soft toys and so squealed with delight when they saw Ruffle, cleaned and mended, Ready to join them.

Earlier that morning Bert had packed the picnic and was busy helping usher everyone, with and without fur, into the old couple’s car. Once everyone was Aboard, Mavis drove them the short distance to where a teddy bears’ picnic was due to take place. As they all climbed out of the car, the toy Ruffle heard a loud whistle that made the hair on the back of his neck stand on end. There was a familiar smell in the air – like the smell from a coal fire…

They were soon on board and all the toys were positioned on the seats next to the window – definitely the best view! Another whistle signalled that they were off and huge puffs of smoke poured in from the open window as the train pulled gently away from the station. Ruffle and the Rest of the toys watched from the window as they passed fields of green, dotted every now and again with cows, horses and sheep. The sound of the wheels on the rails changed as the train trundled over a little bridge that carried them over a large reservoir. Momentarily, the carriage was plunged into semi-darkness then soon back into the sunlight as Another tunnel was eaten up.

At the other end of the line was a huge shed where passengers and their furry toys could sit to eat their picnic lunches. A man dressed as a large teddy bear welcomed all the visitors, Especially those with fur! Bert and Mavis took turns to either hold the toys or to push the grandchildren on the swings and roundabout on the little playpark next to the train shed.

The train whistle sounded to signal it was

time to return to the station where they had started from that morning. Waving goodbye to the man in his teddy bear suit, the children Gathered their toys and settled back into the carriage for the return journey. Once more the toys were arranged on the seat next to the window. But Ruffle felt a little squashed, especially when the two tired children started to argue about who should sit next to the window, and Ruffle felt himself being pushed further and further Into the space between the seat and the side of the carriage near to the window.

The train pulled into the station where Mavis’s car was waiting patiently for them. The children jumped up and gathered all the toys. All that is, except for the toy Ruffle, who was wedged between the seat and out of view. No one noticed that Ruffle was missing as they Clambered into the car and drove off with talk of bears and picnics.

The sounds on the train gradually ceased and the Ruffle toy was left in silence. But there was something vaguely familiar about Ruffle’s adventures today…

Ruffle: a toy’s adventuresSomething seems familiar!

The Arts Society Sparkenhoe committee is pleased to announce that, after the COVID-19 hiatus, we are recommencing our lecture programme from September.

The first four lectures (September to December) will take place via Zoom, and we are all practicing, with our lecturers, to ensure things run as smoothly as possible. Lectures will be live at the usual designated time of 7.30pm. We encourage all of our members who have internet access to HAVE A GO!

On 7th September at 7.30pm, we welcome Elaine Hansen, a lecturer on Scottish and Italian art, to talk on The Glasgow Girls – a group of women artists and designers who worked in Glasgow at the turn of the twentieth century.

We are hopeful that, from February 2021 (no lecture in January) we shall resume face-to-face meetings in the Dixie Grammar School Hall. The School and the committee will be ensuring that appropriate measures are taken to keep us all safe, and of course resumption of face-to-face lectures will be subject to Government guidelines.

Please see the new website (https://theartssociety.org/sparkenhoe) for the schedule and details of all lectures. It is definitely not too late to join the Society and have full access to the ten varied and interesting lectures we have planned for the coming programme year. We look forward to welcoming members and visitors back to The Arts Society Sparkenhoe.

The sports development team at North West Leicestershire district council (NWLDC) are currently undertaking a piece of work to see if any local residents would like to play bowls at Scotland’s Park bowls club again, and potentially help us to re-form a club, after it closed down over two years ago. We are currently in the engagement phase contacting possible interested parties trying to understand if there is demand.

The club, located on Scotland’s playing fields (LE67 3SJ) near Coalville Park, ran for over 60 years before it closed down in 2018 due to a reducing membership base and location issues. The site is all owned and currently maintained by NWLDC, and boasts a two rink bowling green, with a clubhouse in good condition containing a kitchen, function room, ladies and gentleman’s toilets and a bar. The site in the past has suffered, due to its location, from some security issues but steps have been taken since by the NWLDC Community Safety and Open Spaces and Parks teams, such as additional security fencing being installed.

The NWLDC sports development, leisure services, community safety, community focus and open spaces and parks team, as well as Bowls Leicestershire, are all committed and working together to try and offer this club out once again to our community as a bowls facility, however we need the interested participants and a committed voluntary working party to help us. We are invested in supporting this project as much as possible but need a small but passionate group of people to drive forward with us.

So, would you or somebody you know like to play bowls at Scotland’s Park bowls club/site? If you or someone you know is interested or has any questions please contact Emily Rodbourne (Sports Development Officer) via email: [email protected] or by phone: 01530 454755.

Additionally why not follow our team (the health and wellbeing team) on Facebook and Twitter so that your club can keep up with the latest news. You will find us by searching on Facebook & Instagram: @nwlhealthteam, then Twitter: @nwlhealth.

Please help us in sharing this message far and wide.

Do you live near Coalville? Are you interested in playing bowls? Did you ever play at Scotland’s Park Bowls Club? Would you like to see the club running again? We are looking for interested players and volunteers. Help us to use the facility and try to return it to its former glory!

Dumping, damage or illegal occupation can be expensive and time consuming to sort out. We are recently receiving more reports.

Fly tippers don’t care where they dump their rubbish, and if they spot an accommodating space they’ll happily take advantage of it.

Many of them have probably charged some unsuspecting customer for disposing of their waste legally, with absolutely no intention of subsequently paying a penny at an authorised site. Squatters also take advantage of easily-accessible properties in order to live there rent free.

Tips to help deter fly tippers and squatters1. Identify your assets

Conduct a detailed security review of all occupied and unoccupied property and land for which you are responsible. And that includes machinery and vehicles.

2. Secure access and your boundary

Use a systematic approach of reviewing your premises starting with the boundary and working your way inwards. Look for

vulnerabilities in the space between the perimeter, any outbuildings and the main building.

If trespassers can’t gain access to your site then they can’t occupy it. They will usually need to get vehicles on site, so fewer entrances will make the site less vulnerable. Ensure your boundary is robust and high enough to deter someone from climbing over it.

Contact your local planning office for details of what height they specify as safe or the highest you can build without permission.

A strong vehicle height restrictor can stop large vehicles from entering your property. If the site is closed, you can prevent vehicular access to the entrance or boundary by securing it with heavy duty concrete blocks or bollards.

3. Keep a watchful eye

An onsite security guard will provide a permanent presence and can quickly alert the authorities to any attempt to enter the property.

There are accredited organisations who can provide permanent occupancy of the building. Always be mindful of the personal safety

of your staff and remind them to call 999 immediately in an emergency.

Having a monitoring station with remote access to the site means police and the local authority can be instantly notified of an illegal entry, with or without an onsite security presence.

Ensure your CCTV and alarm system is an accredited system, correctly installed and positioned in a way that will both capture the site and any offences. It should not be in a position where it can be easily attacked or removed.

Ensure that your property has good lighting levels that are out of reach.

4. Disempower them

Utilities can be attractive to any would-be occupiers. Cutting off the electricity or water supply to the site, if they are not needed, may deter squatters.

Be aware that disconnecting utilities will impact on any security features you have such as an intruder alarm or CCTV. You will also have to consider fire regulations.

5. Protect buildings within your siteSome buildings are targeted for illegal raves because of their halls, spacious dining areas etc. So it’s strongly advisable to secure all points of access.

The vulnerability of a building will depend on a number of factors including its location, local crime levels and the type of boundary that exists. If the site is close to the boundary, it will make it easier to target as there is no additional layer of protection.

Protect your doors and windows by using security-accredited shutters or grills.

If employing a security officer is not an option, consider using a timer switch to create the ‘illusion’ of occupancy.

7. Let them knowPlacing signage on your premises can act as a deterrent. If you do have any security products in use on your premises – such as CCTV – place signage in a prominent position where it can be clearly seen.

Further information relating to enforcement powers for unauthorised encampments is available from the Home Office.

This morning, despite exam board downgrading of some results the Dixie Grammar School celebrated another excellent set of A level grades. Almost a quarter of all grades were awarded a coveted A* grade and over half at grades A* or A. The resilience of this year’s Upper Sixth have enabled them to cope with unprecedented circumstances, and whilst they are defined by far more than exam grades, the impressive young men and women leaving us do so with super results; they are assured of a very bright future.

Special mention should be made of Megan Clarke with 4 A* grades in Maths, Further Maths, French and Business Studies who goes on to study Economics at Cambridge; Katie Mears also secured four A* grades in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry and goes on to study Mechanical Engineering at Warwick University. Gracie Brooks also secured top grades in Business Studies, French, Mandarin and an Extended Project Qualification, whilst Imogen Banton secured a clean sweep of top grades in Business Studies, English Literature and French.

Dixie’s strength in the creative subjects is highlighted by Lexie Kirwan-Jones’ success in achieving top grades and securing a competitive place at Edinburgh to study costume design. Chloe Vinestock and Jess Falshaw’s outstanding grades see them progress to study Medicine – maintaining the Dixie’s enviable record of success in this particular field.

Dixie does not measure success only by the attainment of academic results and this year group in particular have impressed throughout with their maturity, their capacity to lead and their support for one another.

‘MUDDY KNEES AND CLIMBING TREES AT ADVENTURE PLAYSCHOOL’The start of September saw the grand opening of Adventure Playschool, a brand-new early years setting based in the village of Ravenstone, for 2-4 years olds. Adventure Playschool is founded by Naomi Perfitt, a qualified teacher and an early years and play specialist. Passionate about providing unique learning experiences through play and the great outdoors, the children are taken off site for an adventure every day to explore the natural world around them.

We asked Naomi, ‘Why the emphasis on outdoor learning?’

“Research has shown that children learn best in an outdoor environment which allows for creativity and problem solving. They use their ingenuity and inventiveness to make up games, construct new imaginary worlds and find solutions to challenges.”

“Outdoor learning has not only health benefits with increased exposure to vitamin D and physical exercise but also opportunities to take controlled risks. Activities such as tree climbing, mud slides and den building allow children to gain confidence with lifelong benefits.”

With highly qualified, nurturing staff, Adventure Playschool provides an inviting playroom bursting with invitations to play, and a garden equipped for exploration and creation. The setting has adapted to the ever-changing circumstances brought about by Coronavirus and has created a welcoming atmosphere whilst robust procedures are in place.

Tech Talk with Alex Mackenzie

Do you need a TV to pay for your TV licence? With the changes to the TV licence apparent for over 75s, this £157.50 annual charge will be a new expense for nearly three million households nationwide. Especially in these trying times it is apparent that some just simply can’t afford this. Here are some ways legally, in which you may be exempt from paying this fee.

On the official TV licence website an individual can fill out a declaration form to tell the government that you will not access any BBC content or live television programs broadcasted by Freeview, BT, Virgin Media or Sky. This document can stop an individual being fined for non-payment. So, what can you watch without a TV licence?

It is important to understand that anything created by BBC television studios cannot be viewed legally without paying for a TV licence. However, On Demand services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, All4, My5, and Disney plus can all be watched without a licence due to them being funded by advertisements or a subscription model. You can also use popular video sharing sites and digital store fronts such as; YouTube, Vimeo, iTunes and Google Play movies and music. DVDs, Blu-rays and other physical copies of programmes and films can be watched on any device without being illegal.

Furthermore, many wrongly believe that if you have the ability to watch live television such as having a satellite, aerial with built-in Freeview then you must pay for a TV licence. However, this is not the case, as long as you don’t watch live TV and don’t use these services then you are fine. Stick to the services mentioned above. Although saying this, another important point to make is that you cannot use Freeview, BT, Virgin Media or sky without a licence.

However, the good news is that you can still stream all radio stations including BBC through BBC iPlayer radio or a traditional radio completely legally without a licence because the TV licence law only applies to television. Streaming music services such as; Spotify, Apple Music and others are still completely legal. I hope this helps, and that you found it informative. I will be back next month to help you master your digital life.

If you would like Alex to manage or help you with your company’s social media contact [email protected] or phone 01530 267344.

C H A R I T Y C H A M P I O N SCOALVILLE ROTARY CLUBYou may well have heard of Rotary, but not know much about it. There are 35000 Clubs worldwide in over 200 countries, with 1.2 million members consisting of neighbours, friends, leaders and problem solvers just like you. There are 29 Clubs in Leicestershire, Coalville being one of them.

WHAT IS ROTARY ABOUT?

Its vision is to bring lasting change to communities by creating opportunities, supporting those most in need and transforming their lives. Rotarians are in the unique position of being rooted within their own communities but with a global outlook, ready to tackle challenges at home and abroad. Members take pride in their local community and use their time, knowledge and enthusiasm to benefit the people who call the area home. This means the Club is uniquely placed to make a difference and “put something back”.

Over recent years the Coalville members have raised funds from stalls, race nights, quizzes and the famous Santa Sleigh collections to donate to local good causes including the Gymnastics Club, local Scouts & Guides, Army and Air Force Cadets, the Royal British Legion, the Stroke Club and many others. A recent major achievement was to buy and erect a wooden conservatory/ reading room for Coalville Hospital which has greatly benefited patients. Rotary members leave a lasting legacy on the lives of young people. The Coalville Club regularly

offers youngsters the platforms and opportunities for them to unlock their potential, develop their skills and broaden their horizons.

Each year the Club sponsors up to 12 budding chefs from local schools in the Young Chef competition and 2 years ago the local winner from Castle Rock School reached the National Final of 7 competitors from more than 1000 entrants. The Club has also supported local youngsters in Youth Speaks, Young Photographer and Young Musician with some success.

Together, Rotary Clubs across the world are playing a huge part in the Eradication of Polio programme. In 1985, there were over 1000 cases per day in 125 countries, paralysing and even killing children. Today, the number of cases is down by 99.9%. Each year, Rotary teams up with Kids Out for National Rotary Kids Out Day which gives thousands of disadvantaged children the chance to experience fun trips and days out. For over 25 years, this collaboration has allowed more than 650,000 children and their families to visit theme parks and activity centres across the U.K. with Rotary Clubs helping to organise and fund the trips and Rotarians going along to lend a helping hand. It brings fun into the lives of children who have come from difficult backgrounds, escaped domestic violence or have been disadvantaged in other ways. Coalville is the lead Club in the area enabling Forest Way School children to attend Drayton Manor Park and Twycross Zoo.

There are no barriers to joining Rotary and the Coalville Club is looking to recruit new members; anyone who is willing to help others. It is a friendly Club and apart from fundraising and other activities it enjoys a strong, fun-filled social life. Normally it meets at the Hermitage Hotel in Coalville on 2 or 3 Monday evenings per month, but is currently meeting by “Zooming”.

Interested? Then please call David Knight on 01530 270247 for further information.

‘Give Away Your Guide’ to help local good causesIn order to keep our community safe, our annual scarecrow festival sadly couldn’t take place this year. So, we have decided to have a fundraiser instead! Many charities and projects are struggling at present, so we have decided to try and raise some money for a few local ones.

‘Give Away Your Guide’ is an idea whereby you donate the £3 that you would have spent on entering a scarecrow or as a visitor, buying a guide. All money raised from this fundraiser will be distributed between the three causes shown here. We understand things are difficult for people, but please consider donating as much as you can and help us to help others.

To donate, please go to this link: http://www.heatherscarecrowfestival.com/donate

If you would prefer you can donate with cash (in envelope) posted to 53, Swepstone Road, Heather.

Thank you!

Macmillan Coffee Morning at HeatherRun by St John’s Church, it will be held at The Crown, Heather from 10.00 - 12.00 on Friday 25th September – open air if fine, in the marquee if wet!

The Portable Antiquities Scheme has just announced the 1,500,000th find, which was recorded a few days ago. The PAS was set up in 1997 and expanded to cover the whole of England and Wales by 2003, which was when Wendy Scott, the first Finds Liaison Officer (FLO) for Leicestershire and Rutland, was appointed. Wendy left last year and we now have a new local FLO in Megan Gard.

If you find any interesting items she will be glad to assist in identifying them. Her contact details are on the website. Most of the items on the database were found by metal detectorists, but FLOs are happy to record finds made by people when out walking or gardening. The only stipulation is that they should be over 300 years old, although if they are of particular local significance then later finds are sometimes put on as well.

Since 2003 there have been nearly 20,000 finds recorded for Leicestershire and Rutland, including several for the Market Bosworth region. All the finds are publicly viewable on the scheme’s database. If you go to this page https://finds.org.uk/database/search/postcode and enter your postcode it will give you a list of all local records.

Please note that if you use a metal detector you must have the permission of the person who owns the land, and all treasure items must be reported. The regulations are summarised here https://finds.org.uk/treasureThe photographs above show a selection of local finds from various periods.

Tom Ridgway’s is best described as a boutique hair salon. The decor is contemporary and stylish. Tom, the proprietor is charming, engaging and his sunny disposition is infectious. This creates a wonderful atmosphere which is very informal yet he is a consummate professional. All salon staff are clearly happy in their work and take great pride in their creations; every client is extremely satisfied with the results. The price points for various treatments are set at a reasonable rate and comparable to other salons. Refreshments are also complimentary. Having been to many salons, I can honestly say that Tom Ridgway’s has the most talented staff who know clients preferences. They are technically very competent and their knowledge of their craft is exemplary. I would recommend Tom Ridgway without hesitation.

Jenny Frost

Tom Ridgway hairdressing has been established for 8 years now and welcomes a wide range of clientele. Tom describes his salon as not like any other, informal and relaxed yet still maintaining a high level of craftsmanship. WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO LOVE ME BEFORE BECOMING A WEBy Hollie Jordan, Clinical Hypnotherapist and Psychotherapist

I thought I would write this article at this particular point in time as I feel that it is so relevant right now. I have been quite shocked at the amount of relationships and marriages that have broken down during and since lockdown has begun. Maybe, these relationships were already strained but throw in a worldwide pandemic that has the ability to put a lot of things into perspective, time spent in reflection and added anxieties and stresses and this reality would be a foregone conclusion. It’s not all doom and gloom though as I know of many who have realised what is important, have spent lots of quality time with family and have even announced engagements and pregnancies.

For those who have found themselves newly single, join the club. However, I have been single for a year now. I chose not to go on any dates or become involved with anyone until I learned who I was and as cliche as it sounds to really love ME again.

I have been on a brilliant journey of self-exploration, self-love and reflection; and it was the best thing I ever did. My advice to anyone before jumping into another relationship would be to do exactly this. The most important thing I learned during this year of being by myself is that although you don’t need to love yourself to love another or to be loved; you do need to love yourself in order to make healthy choices and build a healthy relationship that you believe you are worthy of.

A few tips on what it means to truly LOVE yourself:

BE YOUR OWN BEST FRIEND – learn to love being with just you; when you do this you will never have to feel alone and won’t

settle for people who are not good for you just so you can have some company!

LOVE ALL OF YOURSELF EVEN YOUR FLAWS – love yourself just as you are, warts and all. This doesn’t mean you can’t strive for improvement but be happy with all of those not-so-pretty parts that you cannot change!

CHANGE THOSE NEGATIVE THOUGHTS – give those negative thoughts that are not loving to you the heave-ho. I’m talking self-deprecating humour, self-hate, the ‘shoulds’ and the guilt!

NEVER APOLOGISE FOR WHO YOU ARE – all of the choices you make with integrity and love should never be justified to anyone else. Be confident in who you are and never let anyone tell you that you should be someone else!

GIVE AND RECEIVE – one of the best parts of loving yourself is getting to love others too. Love others freely without expectation, resentment or attachment to the outcome!

If you would like to no more about this subject, I would highly recommend you read the book: ‘Choosing Me Before We’ by Christine Arylo.

If you would like any help with confidence, self-esteem, letting go of a relationship or self-belief, solution focused hypnotherapy is a great way to help with this. Please visit my website to book in for a free consultation to see how hypnotherapy can help you.

Dawn and the staff are so lovely, honest and helpful and the prices are great compared to many other places we’ve looked at. I was struggling to find flower girl outfits and wedding shoes, and have found all of these too. Took my girls at the weekend to try on different dresses to decide size, colour, style etc and couldn’t believe the range of options available. The girls enjoyed every minute and felt really special. It’s like an Aladdin’s cave. Huge thanks to Dawn.”

Lakeside Wills… Our COVID lockdown journeyWhen the country was plunged into lockdown we all had to change and adapt to the new situation. For Lakeside Wills there was no time for gardening or fence painting… the phone didn’t stop ringing. People needed our help more than ever with Wills & Lasting Power of Attorneys and some were in urgent need! So we had to adapt to still be able to provide our service but in a different way. Our partner, New Leaf Will Writers Federation helped out by providing video calling systems to enable wants and wishes to be discussed. We quickly adapted and made sure we could provide COVID friendly and secure document signing to ensure clients wishes were in place.

New NormalWe are now in a position to “go back to the office” some days to provide our COVID friendly and secure service, as moving forward in the coming months we cannot rely on the weather to be able to do garden meetings. Lakeside Wills in conjunction with Ibstock Business Centre have done all they can to operate within the COVID guidelines and a warm and friendly welcome is assured, just not our normal handshake. Our office has been deep cleaned, a screen installed for added protection and hand sanitiser is available.

New ServiceLakeside Wills is now able to offer a new service too. As well as Wills, Lasting Power of Attorney and funeral plans we can now offer a cost-effective estate administration service via our partnership with New Leaf Will Writers Federation and Premier Solicitors. So if you need help with probate, full estate administration or have any probate disputes call to see how we can help.

Brand NewWebsite:

Following an invitation from the family of the late Mrs June Newman, members of Ibstock Central T.G. met, socially distanced of course, in the garden of 82 High Street, Ibstock. The occasion was to remember and celebrate the lives of two long standing guild members whose deaths had occurred, just days apart, in April. The second member was Mrs Norma Bonser, whose son and daughter were invited to attend.

A ‘Tree of Remembrance’, that had been set up at the time of the ladies deaths, was recreated for the occasion and members were invited to add hanging ‘memory hearts’ to the display. June had been a member of the guild for more than 55 years and Norma had served 25 years.

A cheque for £135.00 was presented by June’s daughter, Jayne Davidson, to the treasurer of the guild, Wendy Jones, as part of the

donations collected at the time of June’s death. A second cheque went to guild member, Lilian Tointon, treasurer of The Ibstock Stroke Club, for the club’s funds. June and Norma were both committee members of the Stroke Club, with Norma having served as club secretary.

The guild members had not been able to meet for nearly 5 months, so they also took the opportunity to discuss the way forward for the guild, through the current situation.

A short, sharp shower did not dampen the spirits of this fellowship. Thanks were expressed to June’s family for hosting this most fitting event to honour two wonderful friends and ladies who had dedicated so much of their time and energy to the village of Ibstock and beyond.

Ibstock’s Townswomen’s Guild come together to fondly remember two dear friends....

THE VEIL TRAPNanna Nuts, Mr Milly, Moggins and Meby local author, S.J.SimpsonA charming, supernatural, fantasy adventure, for the young (10+) andthe young at heart. The story follows Peter Nuts; a ten-year-oldchampion daydreamer, whose summer at Nanna's won't quite turnout the way he expected this year.

Strange events in the idyllic, sleepy village of Chattersley force Nanna to disclose there is moreto her than baking and pruning roses. Once she opens Pete to the mysteries of the Veil andwhat lies beyond his life is forever changed.

He discovers a world beyond human perception and, unearthsa dark secret. A secret, that has shackled humanity in an amnesia state for

thousands of years. Our fledgling hero is thrust into an age-old battle between light and dark.Honour and bravery manifest spectacularly before his eyes as do the shadows of menace and cruelty. OncePete steps onto this path, his fate is marked, there will be no going back.

The Veil Trap is set in the rolling Yorkshire countryside; my childhood home, where the rugged bleaknessis a fitting canvas for Veilish escapades. Drawing on my passion for the metaphysical, I've attempted toplace an intricate story of awakening in the innocent surroundings of a loving Grandparent and her idyllicbubble of serenity. I've enjoyed musing my own theories through the dialogue of the eccentric NannaNuts and will continue to do so as Pete adventures deeper into the secrets of the Veil.

THECOMMUNITY VOICE

In the village there was a joiner’s shop; the owners were also the local undertakers. In those days, police pay was so poor that we all tried to find legal ways of supplementing our income and one of my sidelines was to act as a bearer at local funerals, for which we received 10 shillings (50p) for each one we attended. I always made sure that I wore my dark suit, white shirt and black tie. Invariably, the other three bearers wore sports jacket, flannel trousers and even open neck shirts, which was very embarrassing. At some of the village funerals we used the church bier instead of the hearse to carry the coffin. The easiest way to describe this was that it was a slatted table-top on wheels, on which the coffin would be strapped and taken to the church yard. This worked fine on the level, but on more than one occasion, we had to hold on to the coffin when going downhill to prevent it from slipping off. Such was village life in the 60’s!

One of the local ‘criminals’ was a young married man who had a passion for driving other people’s cars. He told me that he could open a locked car, hot wire it and drive it away in less than one minute and he was certainly very clever in that respect. However, where he wasn’t so clever, was that he always abandoned the cars close to his home, where he lived with his wife and two young children and he was always ready to admit his offences. Consequently, he had many spells in prison and his young wife found it hard to

cope with the situation. On one such occasion I was on duty, about 11pm, when a car stopped and asked if I was P.C. Robinson. The driver told me that a young woman had asked him to deliver a signed letter to me, which read as follows: “Mr Robinson, I cannot take any more, so I am going to kill myself. Will you please make sure that the children are alright and well looked after.” I immediately went straight to the house, where I found the young women slumped in an armchair with several pill bottles at her feet. I asked her how many she had taken, which was 24. After checking that the children were safe and asleep in bed, I fetched the neighbours to look after her, while I went to the nearest ‘phone box to call a doctor and an ambulance – this was in the days before personal radios.

On returning, I found that the woman was fully unconscious. The local GP arrived within a few minutes. He then surprised me by saying that dose she had taken would make her sleep, but would not kill her. He had prescribed a lower strength tablet, as he suspected that she might try taking an overdose. He decided to send her into hospital to have her stomach pumped, which was so uncomfortable that it would deter her from repeating the action. This was something which would never happen today, but a canny old doctor, by his unorthodox methods, had prevented a young mother of two children from killing herself.

A POLICEMAN’S LOT (can be a happy one!)Extracts from the memoirs of a retired local Policeman:

75th anniversary of VJ DayOn Saturday 15th August 2020, the 75th anniversary of Victory over Japan Dayand the end of WW2, the Whitwick Branch of the Royal British Legion held aremembrance service at the Clock Tower Memorial in Memorial Square.

The service was conducted by members of the RBL and the Reverend Gill Pinnington, and Jan Sketchleyrecited an excerpt from the poem 'Philippine Requiem'. Wreaths were laid by John Unwin on behalf ofWhitwick Branch of the RBL, Cllr Virge Richichi on behalf of North West Leicestershire District Council, Jan

Sketchley on behalf of The Royal Leicestershire Regiment and Elaine Bartlett in memory of her father. It is so incredibly important that theVeterans and Prisoners of War of the Far East are remembered and honoured for their sacrifices. When the country was celebrating in May1945, their plight was far from over.

Jan Sketchley, along with her daughters and granddaughters, proudly remember her father, Pte John 'Jack' Easom Massey of the 1st Battalionof the Leicestershire Regiment. Jack was taken prisoner at the fall of Singapore in 1942 and did not return home until October 1945. His warwill never be forgotten.
