Last month’s front cover quiz answer... and winner!Well this months competition resulted in a flood of entries (so we must have made it a bit too easy). The answer was, of course, The Manor House at Donington-Le-Heath which can trace it’s history back to between 1288 – 1295. The house was modernised in 1618 and around this time, was probably owned by John Digby, whose elder brother, Everard Digby was a close friend of Guy Fawkes and was executed in 1606 for his part in the Gunpowder Plot – an interesting piece of information given the time of year. Our picture shows the draw being overseen by our own Graham Tyers and was drawn by local character Albert Marriott. This month’s competition has been won by PAULA GRETTON. Well done Paula – you have won a breakfast for two or afternoon tea at The Old School Tearooms, High Street, Ibstock. Tel 01530 267300.

Aimed at our younger readers, here’s the third in our series of short stories by author Rachel Greaves, told in rhyme about the adventures of an inquisitive Airedale, Ruffle and his escapades on a steam railway. The full range of these charming story and colouring books can be seen by visiting www.ruffletheraildog.co.uk or emailing [email protected]

Ruffle tried to move backwards, but found he was stuck!

Caught like a fly that’s been swatted in a book,

For Ruffle had been stopped by the new cat flap,

And was now truly snared in the tight plastic trap!

1 2

3 4

Ruffle gets into a flap

There was something new in Eric’s door,

It wasn’t there yesterday, Ruffle was sure.

Now dogs are always hungry – what should Ruffle do?

To get to the cat food, he would have to go through!

First Ruffle decided to put his head through,

Mmm, that seemed very easy to do.

Shoulders next – he gave a little woof!

As this he found was a little more tough.

Ruffle stood there helpless, stuck in the door,

He didn’t think he would eat cat food anymore!

Luckily Eric soon came to Ruffle’s rescue,

‘Stand still Ruffle so the flap I can unscrew!’

Once Ruffle was freed from the door he sat down,

Eric looked at him with a large cross frown.

But his face soon changed when he saw what Ruffle wore,

‘A new collar Ruffle? It’s the funniest I ever saw!’Jeff Fowkes Wheels ltd

Now that the dust has settled on the Sence Quiz 2016, we thought we would give you a quick update.

We are delighted to announce that we raised a fabulous £3,000 on the night for Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group & Clic Sargent in support of local lad Ryan Swain.

A great evening was had by all at Conkers with 30 teams joining us on the night. The quiz was won by reigning champions Lush Gardens.

We could not have raised this fantastic amount without local business support, donations for the raffle and our main sponsors Fishers Dewes Solicitors, Kenray Forming & Coalville Cabs. Hats off to our quiz master Brian Beggan too.

This was the 9th year of running the Charity Quiz and supporting local charities. Plans are already underway for September 2017.

Another successful Ibstock LocAle Beer Festival took place over the weekend of 7th & 8th October at the Palace Community Centre and The Waggon & Horses.A great range of beers and perries from all over the country were available throughout the festival weekend. These were enjoyed by many of the local beer connoisseurs from Ibstock and the surrounding areas. In addition, there was also a Skittles night on the Friday and live music on the Saturday at the Palace. Local crafts and produce were also available throughout Saturday at the Palace.

The patrons of the Palace were treated to the delights of the Old Time Music Hall when ‘The Good Old Days’ recently came to Ibstock.

Miss Jill Daniels and Master of Ceremonies, Mr David St John provided an evening of nostalgic entertainment, complete with an appearance by Flanagan and Allen, Mr Max Wall, Miss Marie Lloyd and Miss Florrie Ford. A cheeky little recitation entitled ‘Albert and the Lion’ was given by our own Janice Mee.

Audience members entered into the spirit of the evening and participated enthusiastically by singing along with many of the well-know and much loved Music Hall songs.

SIXTY FIVE YEARS OF ROCKIN’Ever since he first was taught the mouth organ at the age of twelve Ibstock lad Barry Andrews knew that he wanted to entertain people. This led to him joining a mouth organ band which was run by another Ibstock musician, Archi Bott and together they would travel around all the Leicestershire clubs to entertain the regulars and soon built themselves a reputation for great music.

Around this time, Barry’s elder sisters began taking him to Ibstock Working Mens Club in Central Avenue to learn to ball room dance where Barry was inspired by the Don Clark, the trumpet player in the resident band and acquired his life long love of dance music.

From watching the resident band and other groups, Barry became very interested in playing the drums and he and his brother Aubrey became founding members of Ibstock Scout Group band playing Drums and Bugles and today it is Aubrey’s two sons, Robert and Ian, who still run the Scouts band.

In 1957 Barry and four friends formed a Skiffle group (the pop music of the day) and won a talent contest at the Liberal Club in Coalville. After this Barry played drums in another group ‘The Bell Hops’ and they auditioned for the BBC in Birmingham. Whilst at this audition, the band were fooling around with different songs and ended up doing a jazzed up edition of ‘Pretend’ by Nat King Cole and decided to do this for their audition. The number was heard by another artist Shane Fenton, who later recorded their version and had a number one hit with it under the name of Alvin Stardust and today Barry cringes whenever he hears the song and says “that could have been us”.

Around 1960/1961 Barry was asked to play drums with popular band Johnny Brent & The Thunderbolts. The band was signed to an agency in Sheffield which meant that most of their gigs were in South Yorkshire which meant travelling to towns like Doncaster and Rotherham before the M1 was built – boy what a trek!

Other bands he has played with over the years included The Jay I’s with another local lad John Ison and along the way has met and played with famous names of the time including Shane Fenton, Gene Vincent and Nancy Whiskey, who had a number 2 hit with ‘Freight Train’.

It has been a sixty-five year journey for Barry, who has many more tales to tell, but in all this time he has never lost his appetite for good music. However, nowadays Barry leaves the performing side to his son Brendan, who is the drummer for the band Top Secret, and is also a roadie for singer Billy Bragg.

TAKe A SecoND looK AT YoUR PASSPoRTMost people think that arranging a passport is relatively easy – you just have a photo taken, submit the forms and there you go!

NOT SO! Many people are finding that when they take their passport application forms along to the post office that the photographs are being refused. This is because passport authorities are becoming very particular about the accuracy and clarity of passport photographs and this is due to the increasing level of security being imposed when we travel.

Stephen and Diana Webb at Second Look Photography have recently experienced a number of people coming to them in a panic because their photographs have been refused. This is because when the photograph is taken, the image must be in the perfect position so that important facial characteristics are recorded. Many photos taken in photo booths or by inexperienced photographers tend to fail as they are just not accurate enough.

At Second Look they have special equipment that ensures that the face is in exactly the right position when the image is printed. All pictures are normally taken in their fully-equipped studio although home visits can be arranged for a small extra cost. They are so sure that their photographs will not be rejected that they GUARANTEE that they will be accepted.

When you think that they only charge from £5.50 for a photograph it really makes sense to go to a professional every time to avoid those last minute panics especially with free parking nearby!

Contact Stephen or Diana at Second Look Photography, Business Centre, 57, High St, Ibstock, LE67 6LH or phone 01530 263811 or 07989 691770.

Jackie Neal, a local lady has been selling vintage china and successfully exporting for a number of years. Her range of gifts had expanded to include other collectable items and quality homemade crafts and her stock had grown to such an extent that she decided to look for storage. It was then she was approached by Pat White, who specialised in vintage clothing, and the idea came to them that they should consider a shop in order to display their full range.

They have now taken a unit at the Ibstock Business Centre and called the new venture ‘AB FAB VINTAGE’ and it’s fair to say that business has been good from the first day. They are looking to create a co-operative shop where local people interested in selling vintage and collectables, plus quality crafts, can come together to sell these unique items.

At the moment they have seven dealers sharing the space, selling vintage jewellery, vintage clothing, kitchenalia, gifts and collectables. Also hand-crafted baby knits by local mum Dolly Daydreams and Fairy Doors and Essentials made by Ding Dong Fairy Calling AND beautiful bespoke oil skin bags made by Country Birdy.

The initial response from local people has been very positive with lots of interest and visitors can also enjoy tea, cake and light lunches in the adjoining Old School Tearoom.

Ibstock in Bloom has chosen this year’s poetry and photography competition winners.

In the 7 and Under category Summer Maxwell took first prize with her poem (pictured right in red frame) about how plants sound and feel when playing in the National Forest. Alex Partridge was second and Jack Peachey third. Prizes were presented at St Denys Church of England Infant School on Thursday 22 September by Janet Ward Chair of Ibstock in Bloom.

Ava-May Playle’s poem (pictured right in green frame) about what she will be doing in the National Forest won the 8-11 years section. Hatum Marzouk was second and third was Grace Price.

Roger Partridge won the photography class with his picture of orchids in Sence Valley. As his prize Roger has chosen to take wildlife pictures in Sence Valley with Steve and Diana from Second Look Photography.

Money raised from the Community morning stalls has been used to purchase

two planters for railings at the end of the jitties in the High Street. These are now in place and planted up with pansies and polyanthus.

Ibstock in Bloom have been awarded a North West Leicestershire Council Green Shoots grant to help us brighten up Ibstock in the spring. Funds raised over the summer will contribute £100.00 for 1,000 daffodil and 1,000 bluebell bulbs to be planted at the village entrances, in the Community Garden and in the woodland area at the Cemetery. Planting has begun and will continue throughout November. If you would like to help please contact Jacquie Aucott by phoning 01530 267385 or leave a message at 57 High Street.

IBSTOCK CHRISTMAS PARADE AND FESTIVAL

Sat 3rd December… SAVE THE DATE… Christmas is coming to Ibstock! The excitement is mounting as preparations for this year’s Ibstock Christmas Festival get fully underway. This year the festival promises to be even bigger and better than ever, offering a whole host of attractions and entertainment suitable for the whole family to enjoy!

There will be a hive of activity around the village throughout the day. Things will kick off at 10am with a Christmas Market situated at the Ashby Road football club. This will offer a range of Christmas / craft stalls, along with plenty of food and drink options to keep those energy levels up. An excellent way to support local small businesses whilst ticking some of those Christmas presents off the list!

A very special guest from a certain icy place will be travelling around the village all day… make sure you give him a wave! If you get chance to take a photo post it to our Ibstock Christmas Festival Facebook page; we would love to see them all.

At 4pm the Christmas Market will close, giving plenty of time to head up to the Doctors surgery for the light switch on and Christmas parade through the village. This year we have some very special guests making an appearance... all will be revealed very soon. The parade will be a spectacular sight with both themed floats and walking participants, both representing and celebrating the rich and varied range of clubs and societies on offer within our community.

The parade will end at the old Miners Welfare site where celebrations will continue into the night. There will be a funfair, live music from 6pm to 9pm and a huge walk-though Winter Wonderland on offer; giving those young and old the opportunity to experience the magic of Christmas and meet the big man himself! Food and drink will be available until 11pm so there’s no need to rush home afterwards.

Your Christmas committee is hard at work, making sure the event lives up to, and hopefully exceeds, its very own high expectations, so do come along and support this wonderful community event. Let’s keep Christmas in the heart of Ibstock... we look forward to seeing you there!

With the recent TV series ‘Tutankhamun’ capturing peoples attention and focusing on the search for long lost artefacts, there is another similar little mystery right here in Ibstock!

A long lost beer bottle has turned up which bears the name ‘Tabberers of Ibstock’ and this historical gem can be viewed at the Old School Tearooms on the High Street.

Local lad Brian Cockett has decided to get to the bottom of this mystery and informs us that the site of this past temple to brewing excellence was actually right opposite the Tearooms at 66 High Street.

According to Brian, there are other people in Ibstock who also have remnants of the Tabberers so if anyone can shed light on this – please contact Graham Tyers on 01530 267344 or email [email protected]

Do you enjoy drinking wine and trying out different sorts? Want to share your likes and dislikes with other people?

Ibstock Wine Club members aren’t wine experts, they are local people who enjoy different wines and like to try new ones. We meet four times a year in the Palace Centenary room. Some meetings have been led by Majestic Wines but others are organised by members. We have tried wines of a large range of styles from many different countries

You don’t have to swallow the wine if you don’t like it, but most try at least 1 glass.

The next meeting at 7.30pm on Wednesday 7th December is being organised by Jacquie and Roger who have decided to try a selection of wines from the Co-op . We will choose at least 6 wines starting with a sparkling white and working through the whites and reds to finish with a dessert wine or sherry.

A charge of £8.00 per head covers the cost of the wine which means if more people come you will be able to try a more extensive and expensive selection of wines.

So book your place by Friday 2 December by contacting Gary at the Palace on 01530 262400 or Corinne Male on 01530 451725 or via email at [email protected]

With the advent of Remembrance Sunday it is pleasing to see that attendance at these events becomes larger every year which is a measure of the esteem in which the men and women of our wonderful armed and auxiliary services are held.

This year among many others we three different services being held in Heather and Ibstock.

At 9.30am there will be an open air Service Of Remembrance on Sparkenhoe Green in Heather. If weather is inclement the service will be held in the St Johns Church.

The Remembrance Service at Ibstock will be preceded by a parade, led by the Ibstock Scouts band, which will march from The Welfare to the Memorial in Central Avenue. At 10.45am the service will commence and wreaths will be laid by representatives of the uniformed organisations and The Deputy Lieutenant Of Leicestershire, Richard Brucciani amongst others. After the service the band will lead a parade back to The Welfare and anyone who wishes to remain can then adjourn to the Ibstock Cricket Club for tea, coffee and snacks.

An evening service will also be held in St Denys Church in Ibstock, which is planned to start at 6pm.
